- WINTER STORM CAMPING w/ a DIESEL Heater. I spent a night solo winter camping in my 4runner during a snow storm. The temperature got down to 7F (or -13C) degrees windchill and the snow just kept falling.
The gear I used:
The Sleeping Bag: amzn.to/3GxT7yo
The Heater: amzn.to/3onz2EA
The Axe: amzn.to/3ujq9jc
The Power: amzn.to/3L4wo0l

I love the extendable straw for stoking the fire. Such a simple yet effective tool.
It’s one of my favorite fire related tools. They were like a dollar for one but they have jumped up 3x recently. If you’re interested: amzn.to/3AVvqPj
Picking up a two pack! Getting one for myself and a friend who loves to start fires.
Great video! Living in Florida this is way different then what I’m used to. Retirement coming soon hope to experience that type of camping. Safe travels!
It’s fun for sure. I came from the Carolinas so we get a bit of the sunny beach like you and the snowy peaks like Colorado but it’s nothing like here. Congrats on retiring, I’m already day dreaming about mine in my early 30s.
Love camping in the snow/winter. Nice video, well done.
Yeah there are so many camping spots available, it’s really the best. Just gotta be a little more prepared is all.
Oh man, had to laugh. Just finished the exact same mount for my heater. Too funny! They say great minds think alike. Thing is, I'm probably forty five years your senior. Well done Ox! Well done.
Yeah I have a video soon coming out about how to do this. It’s sort of me taking the best of everyone’s ideas to make this version of my diesel heater.
Beautiful camping 🏕 thank you for sharing :)
Thanks, I really appreciate the feedback!
Favorite content you provide, really enjoyed this one. That heater looks 1000👏
Yeah I want to do more videos like this. These are my favorite to film.
And glad you like this type of content!
When i come across stressful day,i tend to watch this kind of video as, it gives me some rest to refresh my mind and forget worse day that happened in the past.
That’s exactly what I do with these types of videos as well.
Ride a motorcycle or pack up and go camping.
@@ironhorsegladiator5034 i miss having a motorcycle. Just sold my Harley a few months ago when I lost my job.
Super jealous. This looks like an awesome trip! Great video man!
It was super last minute and rushed but I’m glad it looked that way haha!
Love the heater set up
Me too. I want to test some other methods this winter as well to see what’s the best since there are tons of other ways of doing it.
Awesome Video! Reminds me of the good old days! I am excited to see more camping related videos! 👍
Yeah man the good old days now lol
FANTASTIC video! I looked through the comments trying to figure out the purpose of driving onto the rocks. What does that do? Thanks!
So maybe it didn’t come across in this video but the ground was unlevel here so I put the rocks under the tires to make the side that was down hill level with the other side. Should have shown the level in my tent after or something to indicate that.
Lets the Rocks know who's boss of course, or for traction who knows
That pretty smart lol
Basically a hasty leveling kit. Works well enough!
Why not just park it somewhere that’s level ?
You're videos makes me want to go camping keep up the great work 👍
Thanks so much! I’ll have more camping videos soon. Actually have another dropping this week.
@@OXFOOT I'll most definitely be looking forward to it appreciate what you do bro
I always look forward to your videos
Thanks so much! Glad you like them!
Just posted a video explaining how the diesel heater setup works and how you can do it as well.

Love the 4Runner!!!
Thanks! The bumper is finally back on too!
Great looking set up! I have a Tacoma and have been on the fence on whether to get a RRT. You may have just made me change my mind. Thanks for uploading this great video.
What tents are you looking at? I’ve owned like 4 or 5 at this point. I’ve camped in tents, hammocks, campers and RTTs and I think this is by far my favorite way. It’s between a camper and ground tent. Kinda the best of both.
Love the setup! 100k subs would be easy for this kind of premium content. Stay safe out there brother!
Appreciate it! I’m headed more in this direction of video in the future. I prefer shooting this anyways.
@@OXFOOT Yes sir! I think solo camping ASMR tends to draw a lot of viewers since content like these are actually pleasant and calming to watch. Your camp setup is very unique (from campers I’ve watched) and I really loved it! More recipes soon as well as cooking setup would give it more of a boost. See you in your 100k sub video! Advance congrats brother! ✌🏼
@@ajmasagca Thanks so much, Greatly appreciated, I'd be happy to hit a quarter of that! Thats not a bad idea, get some cooler and more interesting dinners going.
Love the 4runner!
Thanks!
Yasssssss more of this!
I’m tryin’. We hardly getting snow out here this year. But yeah appreciate it big time!
Yeah man! Great storytelling!
Thanks so much! One of the simplest complements but my favorite piece of feedback I’ve gotten on here.
cool camping video, thanks!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks so much for the feedback!
Enjoyed that! I winter camp in Alberta with similar environment and setup. 2018 trd off road lifted and my mastiff/lab
No roof top tent. Me, the kids and the dog sleep in the back so I can run it once and awhile 😄
Subbed, Thanks for sharing.
Sometimes I feel like building a platform on my drawers in order to be able to sleep inside again sometimes. On occasion I just prefer sleeping inside the car if I hear bears or moose around. Drawers kinda prevent that.
@@OXFOOT but the tent is more fun for fall spring and summer! I'm just starting to research them actually. I think the kids would love it. At least you have the choice 😄
Very relaxing to watch!
Thanks. I think I’ll try to make more of these, keep the music and talking short like this one.

Yeah hopefully it’ll pick back up. Doesn’t help other than a sense of accomplishment but it’s cool.
it's really cool. keep up the good work.💖
Thanks, I appreciate the feedback!
So cool!
Thanks!
Good stuff, great content. You just got my sub, looking forward for more videos like this in the future.
I have a few ready to go similar to this type of video. Still have some gear stuff to knock out because I filmed it but this is the direction I’d like to go.
I came to see your set up for cold weather camping. I just ordered a set of collapsible bellows/ straw. That thing looks awesome! I have the same diesel heater set up similar to yours. Sold my old RTT in the fall. Will be picking up another soon.
Yeah for the most part it’s the same but here and there I try new things every once in a while. What tent are you going with?
@@OXFOOT Considering the TuffStuff Alpha II. But since I live on an island I have to travel 3 hours to go see one. There are some things I like and others I dislike. Would hate to buy it sight unseen, or travel 6 hrs total and come back empty handed if I don't like it. My preference is to buy second hand so, I am keeping my eyes open for what becomes available in the spring.
Best sleep you will have when in the woods
Oh yeah. I sometimes get better sleep out there than I do at home. Maybe because you have to work for it.
I love your content.
Thanks so much, I appreciate it. More like this being shot and edited now.
Great video as always! Really enjoy this type of content. I know several have asked about the heater but will you do a more in-depth video of the diesel heater?
It’s coming soon. I hadn’t expected to have this released before the heater video or for so many folks to be interested. Trying to get that video out soon.

Nice video. Reminds me a lot of lone wolf 902 who I follow and enjoy. Also that was a Richeous looking ribeye nice steak choice
Yeah it’s a pretty common style of video. He does a lot of hot tent camping which I will have a video on soon, but tons of folks have similar style videos to this.
Yeah the steak was so good while camping. Got started late so by the time it was done I was so ready.
@@OXFOOT that's true. I follow a lot of people like that. Those are styles of videos I enjoy. Did you end up cooking that over the fire you made or on your stove ?
Enjoyed the video. Looks totally relaxing. What, if any, kind of challenges, issues have you run into solo camping?
Solo camping just means that you basically have to do everything by yourself which doesn’t sound that bad but you will realize quickly you’re on your own cooking, cleaning, setting everything up, breaking it down. Secondly in my case I make sure to always keep a remote hole punching device (aka fire @rm) on me at all times in case bears or something larger than you comes up. And lastly is it’s not as fun. You don’t have that time sitting around the fires with the buddies. I will say I like both. Sometimes with work and trying to grow a UA-cam channel I just need to get out there and have time to think on my own.
good ambient
Thanks! Appreciate it
I’m not sure if that is a RTIC soft pack that you are using, but if so I believe they are super underrated. I have one and I love it. It’ll hold ice for a decent amount of time. Happy camping man!
The one I have is something setpower sent me. I have their fridge and they sent me this cooler as a promotional thing and I wanted to try it.
The RTIC stuff is really great though. I really like their stuff.
A friend once tried heating with the nice warm air coming out of the exhaust.
Once
Nice and warm like a blanket lol. Unless that actually happened then that sucks sorry.
Lol, the clone effect! Good stuff buddy!
Lol thanks. Couldn’t decide if I should keep it or keep the original without the clone. Glad people liked it.
Honestly id love to do something like this, I just need the right stuff
You can do this with a lot cheaper stuff than I have. Just make sure you pay attention to temperature ratings and always have back ups! Be over prepared.
Very well 👍🏆🥇💯😍😄🌼🌻🌺

Yeah I have a longer one somewhere, this one just fits nicely in my back of the seat storage I have. Next time I need to just add the windshield cover I have lol.

Makes you appreciate the hell out of the bed when you get home too. I did this once in a hammock a while back and I slept for like 18 hrs when I got home. Best sleep of your life after sleeping in that cold.

Ugh I need a heater. Really want to keep camping year round.
I have a video showing how to do this set up but you can hit me up on IG if you end up doing it and want to do this set up.
Nice video!
Thanks!
How do you like the GFC compared to other roof rack/RTT combos? Really considering getting one myself
It’s great if it’s just you and one person, same with the Area BFE or the CVT. With winter camping it’s a bit cramped in any of those tents for me with all my stuff plus filming gear. If you’re looking at a hardshell tent like the GFC/CVT etc. I think the GFC is the way to go. That being said but a new one because the GFC V2 is so much better.
Those 4 runners are so sweet! But the gas mileage so bad!! I would love to have one
So bad on gas. Mines even worse with the new tires I put on. Maybe 15 mpg at best.
Solid choice with the ancient Stoicism 🧘
Yeah I used to read a ton but I really only read stoicism now as it’s all I have time for and it’s very beneficial.
@@OXFOOT I feel you there. Been running short on time myself and whenever I get a few moments to read, I find myself reaching for some stoicism.

Awesome video. Good thing you kept music at a minimum.
Yeah I listened to subscribers, I love listening to music when I watch these videos so I’m glad people gave me feedback as to what they wanted, seems overwhelmingly like the no music thing was preferred!

@@OXFOOT Thank you very mutch... have a nice Start of the week .... see you….
Did the heater run all night? Do you know how long a full tank will run? Love the video!
Yeah the tank ran almost all night. Not because it ran out of fuel but because I’m still figuring out the settings and accidentally made it run for 8 hours instead of just constant. Turned it back on in the morning and ran it.

Hola mi amigo. Saludos desde Colorado.
Hi, very nice video !
Question about the pipe going from the heater to the tent; was it with the heater when you bought it or did you buy it after ?
I bought it after. I have a video coming on this whole set up but I’ll grab the link to this hose.
amzn.to/34lrs6r
@@OXFOOT thanks a lot ! Will wait for your next video !
It’s a very nice « tool » to have for cold countries.
Hi, May I know what size of tire your using, did you do any lift up on your 4runner? Thank You
3” lift and 285s in this video but about 4 days after this video I went to 305/70/17s which is a full inch taller. I wouldn’t recommend the 305s, there is so much cutting/hammering involved.
This is my first video of yours. Throughout the years, the overlanding community here on UA-cam has exploded!!! And everyone whom has a 4runner or Tacoma (Toyota/Lexus) product, has an overlanding channel. With that being said, this channel seems very minimalist, in nature. Then again, this is ONLY my first video.. I'm going to subscribe and go check out the previous videos, in order to catch up.
Yeah I get it. I feel the same way. I came from the back packing, day camping world before this and I thought the same thing had happened in that community as well. I got into hammock camping and then like two years later every person has one suddenly and everywhere I looked on UA-cam someone had a channel.
All I can hope to do is put my own spin on it coming from a different camping background than other folks.
@@OXFOOT Sounds refreshing. I’ll stay tuned.
@@Kiss__Kiss mostly finished editing. Was going to try to make it all fancy and cinematic but so many people are asking I think I’ll just drop it as is on Thursday.
If diesel heater takes heated air, it will be warmer and less fuel consumption.
Either you put heater inside, and exhaust to outside, or put another pipe from tent to inlet heated air to heater.
Yeah I could and probably Lu should do that to be more efficient but right now I’m happy with this sort of more minimalist set up. I’m sure in the future I will upgrade and just build my own enclosure and do something like that.
Just found your channel! Curious, why did you put your rig on top of two rocks?
Should have made it more of an obvious thing in the video but it was unlevel ground so I drove up on them on one side to make that side higher to match the drivers side.
Did your heater hose smell at all when running the heater? The one I have does. Also did you have to do anything with the air/fuel settings for altitude? Mine runs great a sea level but gets an error at 7k ft
What kind of smell did you smell? Like diesel, plastic or something else? I ran it at about 7k feet fine. What error code did you get?
@@OXFOOT It wasn't diesel smell, sort of like plastic. I ran it on high for an hour when I got back to try and burn off the smell but it didn't. No smell without the hose on (15ft amazon one). The error code was like p5? Can't remember but it was for overheating according to my manual. I'm assuming it was running too lean because the altitude and getting too hot
Hey, looks like you are running spacers on your 4runner. Do they ever give you worries? I've seen horror stories of the bolts shearing (even the nicer made ones). What are your thoughts? I love the way they make the car look but I can't get over the "what if"
I actually don’t have spacers anymore. I have run spacers before for two years at a time, moderate to heavy wheeling with them. Did top of the world in Moab with spacers and they were fine. Sold them to a buddy and he’s been running them ever since. My wheels are wide and have a -38 offset now so I don’t need spacers.
What storage system do you use? I'm looking for something for my 2019 4Runner. Thanks!
I used park yo park offroad but unfortunately they aren’t a company anymore. You could probably make ones like these.
Thank you for not adding music.
I tried to keep some music but keep it super minimal. Just tat the beginning and the end. Music throughout is a beginner move and I’ve been guilty of it before.
(New to Overlanding) Do some people park on rocks or large branches to avoid not getting stuck?
Should have made it more of an obvious thing in the video but it was unlevel so I drove up on them on one side to make that side higher to match the drivers side.
Sir can you Make a video over necessary things for a solo camping.. i beleave experience make a man perfect.. it would be helpful for so many solo campers in winter
Sure I think that’s a good idea. I’ll add it to my UA-cam idea board!
Great video! How are you liking the GFC tent? Are you using the mounts they offer? Are they solid? Thanks
I love the tent but I recommend getting the V2 of this tent as I have a very early model that all the kinks hadn’t been worked out yet. I have a 2.5 year review coming up as I’m actually selling it for a larger tent now that I’m not just a single guy anymore.
@@OXFOOT isn’t that big enough for 2 persons?
@@TrailRunn4r yeah but she and I are both over 5’10 and we have a dog. Not that the height is an issue in the tent but with height comes larger proportions. Plus it’s more so the winter as that means bigger sleeping bags and more blankets.
Even the firewood sounded cold.
Haha. Lol, It does
Booo no hot tent?!?!
Haha jk man!
Awesome video dude!
I’m living through you 😭
Straightforward setup. Purposeful gear. I like it all! Now if like to haul more people so I’m trying to figure out the logistics of that. Can’t decide if 4Runner or GX460 will fit the bill.
I do have a video on hot tent camping. Audience didn’t seem to like it very much so I decided not to try it again. At least for video.
Yeah I think the 460 is a better purchase. I think the 470 is just so over hyped now it’s just too expensive for what it is so the 460 is perfect. People always talk about how bougie they are in 460s but you can get the like 2011-2013 or what ever those years are for way cheaper than a 5th Gen.
@@OXFOOT thanks man.
Yeah I agree. The 470 was my first ticket but the aged timing belt design kinda turned me off. Not that it can’t be done. Although the timing chain has proven far more reliable and much lower cost of maintenance.
Honestly not that bougie… I mean the controls don’t scream I’m a rigged off road machine nor does the body work… but with a trac running full time plus the layout of the crawl and diff locker being centralized it’s just different positions… I have seen some very clean 460s
Thanks for the input! I look forward to more videos
Curious as to why you parked on top of two rocks on the passenger side?
The ground there was unlevel so I used the rocks the make it higher on that side so I could sleep in a level rooftop tent.
Doesn't your diesel heater controller have a built-in Thermostat? If so, shouldn't you have it in the RTT with you to control the RTT temp? If not, how does your heater regulate what temperature to maintain? Or does your simply run max power all night long? I have a similar heater (the version with the fuel tank on the side), and I extended the wiring on the controller so that I can bring it in the RTT, then set a comfortable temperature, and the heater does a good job maintaining that throughout the night. It's more efficient too, as the heater goes on low power mode once the desired temp has been reached, and will only kick back to high when maintaining the heat.
Some of them say they have temperature controls but they don’t really work like that. The settings it has are just power settings and timer settings.
It can run at a bunch of different settings either the whole night or as long as you set the timer.
I was taught to keep your boots inside your tent, else they not be there in the morning.
If hiking/camping, that’s a long walk home!
Because of animals? Or snow/rain?
When I used to back pack I would tie mine up or put it in a bag and bring it in. Hadn’t thought of that in the RTT.
Awesome film, I gotta ask did that diesel heater come with the wheel attachment or did you buy separately? And which heater is that, thanks man !
It’s just a little work to make it fit on there. I have a video: BEST Diesel Heater Set-Up for Winter Camping | Vevor Tools
ua-cam.com/video/OTQ4e5gDkDo/v-deo.html
It’s got the heater I use, and I should have a full list of parts as well as a parts list on my amazon storefront.
www.amazon.com/shop/oxfoot
Still gotta get out soon together, maybe next storm
Absolutely. This wasn’t too far away from Eldora so we could hit this same spot in theory.
I may have missed the explanation but was riding your two wheels onto rocks for the purpose of leveling your vehicle for a better experience when sleeping in the tent? Great video!
Yeah exactly. The hill I was on wasn’t too bad but the sleeping experience is just so much better when it’s tack on level.
Cool vid i like the now chat approach….. what brown jacket is that looks warm :) …..?how is the 4Runner set up ? Lift tire size ? How you liking it ? Cheers stay safe
It’s a mountain hardware jacket, it’s called the stretch down hoody in golden brown. Warm but not sure how water proof it is? Hard to say.
4Runner I like, I’m starting to feel that the GFC tent is a bit small for me and my little family but other than that no major complaints. Lift is a bit of a hodgepodge at this point but it went from mostly icon to mostly bilstein set up but with SPC upper control arms, highly recommended the uppers. Tire size in this video was 285/70/17 but the reason the bumper was in the trunk was because I was switching up the bumper so I could run 305/70/17s which I am currently running.
305s I would only recommend if you are willing to cut/hammer/weld but 285/70/17 is plenty of tire for most folks.
What model mountain hardware jacket are you wearing in the beginning?
It’s called the “stretch down hoody” in golden brown. I really like it but this was my first time wearing it and it’s more of a cold but dry weather hoody. Stays warm but not sure how waterproof it is.
I’m sure everyone is asking about the heater and the table, nicely done on that idea. Where did you pick up the flexible dryer hose? Mine is the non flexible/ hard to mold one from lowes haha.
Oh btw, for those cold trips my gf and I wanted to make fire starting easier, so we bought an Outland fire bowl, it’s been a life changer in the cold.
Yeah mine came with the hard short one but I instantly upgraded to this one. amzn.to/34d53bI
Yeah I have a fire pit that I like but I think for videos it’s more fun to make a fire from scratch. It was a bit cold while trying to start it.
FYI, if anyone doesn’t know. Dryer hose (like those found at hardware box stores) is not safe for diesel heaters.
@@chrismullin8304 how’s that? I took my design ideas from bits and parts of other peoples and 99.9% of other builds had them. Any other suggestions? I’m doing a video on the heater set up I have now.
@@chrismullin8304 I think you need to expand on why you say they aren’t safe because 99.9999% of people who have the heaters use the hoses, is there something you know that we don’t and ask something better?
What’s the coldest you’ve ever camped?
maybe 50
6° F, also with a diesel heater in a rooftop tent.
@@dREaDneck_Moto one time I went camping without a heater in -5 weather and that day I vowed not to at least have two heat sources with me.
@@OXFOOT The rooftop tent with diesel heater is a great combo. I keep my remote handy because, as you know, they can be too hot. I also have one in my van. Love em.
Bout to do 40s for the first time this weekend
hi, i'm a beginner in offroading/comping, just want to ask why you put your car on those rocks?
keep loving what's you're doing
I was parked on a hill so I parked on the rocks to make it a bit more level.
1:46 you almost ran over your shovel @OXFOOT. Have you thought about using a Long bungee to put on tent to snug it in so you don't have to fold the sides of the tent in when closing it? Or would it be tooooo cold for the bungee to bungee? Wouldn't mind seeing one of your DIY cover for your heater to keep snow & rain off of it.
There was a bungee attached to it when I bought the tent but I don’t know what I did with it. It actually kind of interfered with the tent entrance so I ditched it.
And yeah I think I was in a bit of a rush to set up and almost ran over the shovel. Also yeah I’m editing the video now talking about how I built the diesel heater. Trying to get it out soon.
Wouldn't it be better to connect the trucks exhaust directly to your tent via hose for more efficient heating?
I prefer setting the tent on fire while I’m inside snuggled up with the fire all around me.
Just stumbled across your channel. Is the tire mount for your diesel heater custom? Or can you buy that somewhere? Awesome video by the way. New sub from me 👌🏼
I’m actually editing a video right now on how to set up this diesel heater but I’ll send you the step thing I have. You basically set the heater on top, trace the bolt holes on the bottom and then drill a big hole for the exhaust to come out the bottom.
amzn.to/3ut95Ho
@@OXFOOT thanks!! Can’t wait for the video. We have a buddy heater, but I think we’ll being going to a diesel heater this season.
@@the_bencredible buddy heater worked for me for a while but yeah the diesel heater is so much better!
Where did you get the tube you blew through to start the fire?
This should be the one I have. amzn.to/42b5KKr
Camping alone in a bear and wolf territory requires a gun, not for the wild animals, but wild humans!
I carry a G20. Strong enough for wild animals and maybe overkill for people but if someone is trying to harm me, I’m not concerned about being overkill.
How did the diesel not freeze? What was the temp with all the snow?
There’s different fuels you can run to keep it from gelling. Kerosene and also a mixture of the two.
I'd like to see more of the cooking and the result, no talking and I definitely sleep in the car hence no heater required and the car is big enough
I have a no talking version of this video. It was my first one so it’s likely that this winter I’ll have longer cooking sections. I’ll be doing a talking and no talking version for each video I think.
