    I have been enlightened listening very intensely recently to all three of their albums that I bought as a teen from 1968 to 1969. I now believe that the spirit, passion, and creativity on their first album is truly the best. Their spirit of musical cohesion, passionate harmony, and brilliant songs I believe surpasses the songs on Buffalo Springfield Again (my fave in '69) and even though I also love the songs on Last Time Around their soulful harmony and cohesive creativity was fading away. I also now truly love and am in awe of the Richie Furay songs and his incredible voice, he may have truly been the Heart and Soul of the band. Also, we must all tip our hats to the brilliant Ahmet Ertegun for delivering this incredible music to us.

    Although "For What It's Worth" is the band's first Top 40 appearance, Buffalo Springfield debuted in August 1966 with "Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing." It was regionally popular in southern California, but only Bubbled under Billboard's Hot 100 at 110.
    When "For What It's Worth" was charting well in early 1967, Atco decided to add it to the "Buffalo Springfield" lp. I bought my copy in 1972 that includes the song.
    While I was stationed with the Air Force in England, UK--Atlantic released "Fours" (# K 10237), an extended-play 45 in 1972 that includes Bluebird, Mr. Soul, Rock n Roll Woman and Expecting to Fly. All tracks are taken from "Buffalo Springfield Again."

    Very important group along with Poco. I was in high school in the 60's and everything coming out of California was sometimes more important than what came out of England. I will turn 75 this year and was in high school in southern Ontario very near to Omemee where Neil Young spent his earlier years so the Neil Young gossip in high school never stopped. Thanks for this. I love the memories.

    I have the original version of the first album that has Baby Don't Scold Me, before it got replaced with FWIW on subsequent versions. Again is also my favorite album of theirs; even though they were beginning to splinter by then, it's a classic. On the last album my least favorite song is In The Hour of Not Quite Rain - the lyrics were written by the winner of a "Write a song for the Buffalo Springfield" contest. On the Way Home is my favorite from that album, and Neil performed that for many years after. The version on 4 Way Street when CSN comes in gives me goose bumps. Another connection between CSN and Poco - Phil Hartman designed album covers for both of them. Thanks for the great video.

    What I would give to see your music collection Norman - I could be lost for days. I love your videos. I am a great music collector (nowhere near as huge as you!!) with about 4000 CDs and especially love the late 60's music scene in San Francisco & LA and have pretty much everything from that era. It was such a brilliant time for innovation and originality in music that will never be replicated, and still holds up really well today. It was my geography teacher in the mid 70's who got me into music big time as he said he had the 2nd biggest collection of original blues records in Europe, and wow his house was full. Me and a mate used to go back to his house to listen to those records and smoke some pot - which felt brilliantly rebellious at the time. Keep them coming Mr Maslov!! 😊

    I love (and have) all their albums. I've been stuck on Baby Don't Scold Me with that little Day Tripper riff. How cool, remember when bands then would throw out those little nods to The Beatles? Nowadays Clancy was also covered by The Carpenters and Fever Tree. Timeless, these albums never age for me. BS is in my top 10. Thanks mazzy.

    Quite surprised when this popped up on youtube. I totally agree with the autho: The Buffalo was a great band as well as they were the the forerunner of CSN&Y.
    Their records are not in a plenty but a must have for every collection. Here in GER they weren't that popular as in the US/CAN. But we should all care that they won't be forgotten. I will later go upstairs and grab 'em records again. This will be my Buffalo day today. Thanks for reminding Mazz.

    Happy to see you do a video on my (second, after the mighty Moby Grape) favorite band of all-time, and I'm sure I'm only one of millions of 60s rock aficionados who would place them in a similarly exalted position in "the pantheon". I only wish, when they reissued the debut album in early 1967, they'd dropped "Hot Dusty Roads", rather than the killer "Baby Don't Scold Me" to make room for the (vastly overrated, not to mention overplayed) "hit".

    I recently picked up that 1973 Buffalo Springfield compilation album over Christmas at Standards Record shop in San Diego county (Vista). It still is the only place where you can listen to the 9 minute version of “Bluebird”. This version is the combination of the studio track with a live jam added to the end. Neil Young does not like this version and left it off the 3 CD box set when he compiled it.
    Neil Young also disavows the third album. Saying the second record is the real last album.
    A great band and one of your better recent videos Mazzy. Thanks!

    • @denniswood1437
      @denniswood1437 9 місяців тому

      Neil Young is a great singer-songwriter, but he did a real disservice to that 2001 box set. Key songs from the third album such as "In the Hour of not Quite Rain" were left off as well as the extended "Bluebird." He even repeated tracks while omitting others, making the set redundant when it easily could have been great.

    I love the 9 plus minute version of "Bluebird" (which is different from the Buffalo Springfield Again version) that was released on their 1973 Retrospective album. There is a great guitar duel between Stills & Young on the 9-minute version that is incredibly incendiary and truly ROCKS!

    Maz, thank you for that. I really enjoyed your insight into that amazing band and the times. I was previously aware of the story behind For What It's Worth courtesy of having watched a great documentary about Laurel Canyon and the music scene that grew from that area. Brilliant band during crazy times on Sunset strip. I only wish they could have kept it together a few more years. But then, there probably wouldn't have been all the awesomeness that CSN and sometimes Y produced over time, either. 6 or half a dozen, eh?
    Love your style, Mazzy. Keep on keepin' it real. You're awesome! 💋

    Hi Mazzy, very informative, educational and enjoyable video. Buffalo Springfield were something of a mystery to me. My first exposure was the 4 tracks on Neil Young's "Decade" triple LP. However the liner notes were hard to read and I was unaware of Young's earlier career. I heard the band mentioned in a 'retro' record store in late 1988 into 1989 and bought the double LP compilation. I recall seeing the 4 CD boxed set on release and found & bought it for around $30 at a record fair a couple of months back. I don't have the studio albums but methinks that Rhino box would be worth having. Love how you lovingly speak of the music you deeply love. Cheers mate.

    In 1965 The Dillards tried to go electric, recording a couple of singles on Capitol. After they failed to set the world alight, they decided to go back to their acoustic sound, and gave their amps and electric instruments to a young band called Buffalo Springfield.
    What a star Richie Furay was putting the third album together with Jim Messina, after Young and Stills just recorded their songs and split.
    In many ways, with Rusty Young being brought in to play pedal steel, Furay's songs were really the first Poco recordings.
    The first Poco album is great, I think it's a much better record than Last Time Around. It almost sounds like the album The Beatles would make if they had made a Country Rock record.
    I might listen to the Springfield after Poco's Pickin' Up The Pieces.
    Cheers - Hedley

    Thanks! Appreciate you highlighting the Buffalo Springfield albums. The first album is my favorite. It was the only time when the band was a real functioning cohesive unit. By the second album, they were already starting to break up. When the Springfield performed at Monterey Pop, Neil was a no-show. So, David Crosby took his place for that performance. Which was the beginning of the end for Crosby in Byrds, that same year. It was Stephen's band, but Richie was there main vocalist. In the context of time, Richie was best suited to sing many of the songs that Neil had written. Round and Round (It won't be Long), featured on Neil's (Everybody knows) album was first written while he was in the Springfield. Trivia. I believe the demo is featured in the latest compilation album.

      Well thank you very much. There’s so much more to the story, as you write here. I had forgotten about Monterey. Maybe I should have shown the CD box set with all the demos or talked about the reunion you’re that Neil cut short. I did see that reunion at the Bridge School.

    Pity there was never an official Buffalo Springfield live album. There’s a few You Tube vlogs that captures the band at a high point of their short career. Huntington Beach 1967 is the best I’ve found with some great interplay between the guitarists, especially on Bluebird, great rough and ready Hung Upside Down. Plus one or two snippets of the band live on TV shows!

    Buffalo Springfield Again is indeed the crown jewel. Neil's brilliance really starts to shine with "Mr. Soul" and "Broken Arrow." Stills gives us the wonderful "Bluebird" (love the James Gang cover of it on Yer' Album too) while "Rock and Roll Woman" has the whole band firing on all cylinders. Thanks for doing this review. I was reluctantly thinking of getting the upcoming 45RPM of the first album even though I'm tired of such short sides for whatever sonic gain they may provide. The RSD box is easily gotten on Discogs for what I think is a fair price. Well done!

    I think it is particularly telling that on the third album, four of the members of the band are facing in the same direction, with Young facing the opposing direction. I believe that might express the attitude of the band at the time and probably why they broke up.

    Great band. Again is their best album. Rock'n Roll Woman is influenced by the Byrds' Renaissance Fair. Could do without Good Time Boy though.

    Great band and one of my favorites out of the West Coast from the era. Have always been curious how one more LP might have sounded. Not to go to the dark side but It's worth noting how Neil f*cked this band over badly on two occasions for his own selfish reasons. One hurt them them on the national stage that could have given them invaluable exposure (The Tonight Show) and made a difference in their career. How Stills was able to forgive him I don't know.

    P.S. clearly the weakest song on "Last Time Around" is "The hour of not quite rain" which only exists because it was part of a Los Angeles radio station lyric contest. Not unlike the "Moby Grape" lyric contest that happened in (1967) in San Francisco on radio station KFRC.

    For me Greatest Hits is really all a casual listener needs though I have the whole catalogue. The albums were patchy and Stills and Young fought for supremacy from the beginning. As we now know, Neil should never be in a band unless he controls it with an iron fist. He used CSN to boost his lagging career then dropped them after he started gaining momentum. Crosby was quoted as saying he was the most selfish person he had ever met while Nash warned people not to get close to Neil because he will tear your heart out. I think Springfield could have been huge under the right circumstances.

    Frustrating that with both the plethora of demos and alternate mixes on the 4 CD box set, they still couldn't include the extended version of Bluebird, as that original double LP comp was never given a CD reissue.

    An LA band? I seem to recall seeing them in SF in April 1967 playing a benefit with the Airplane. BTW they released three albums. Do you always make it up as you go along? If so, you're probably from LA.

      It seems you didn't watch the video. Mazzy mentioned all three albums. BTW, the Springfield was an LA band. They set up residence in, wait for it... Laurel Canyon, which is in LA. Believe it or not, even in the 1960s, bands went on tour. Not only did they perform in SF, but they were also at Monterey Pop in 1967 (minus Neil Young). Mazzy is from SF. So I guess he's not making it up as he goes along, huh? 😅

      You have the same east coast vibe your mentor has: half-truths, arrogance and "let's must make it up as we go along." I got involved in the SF scene in the fall of '66, had friends in the biz and don't really need to be told shit I experienced first hand chump. Your mentor might be, as you claim, from SF but he espouses like all the know it alls from NY that came out acting really big time. Yeah, I didn't watch the video because of the first few minutes out of his mouth and BTW many people from SF are just as full of shit and don't know what really went down. Maybe you're one of them. Have a nice day. @@ronaldhitchings1847

    *MONO v STEREO* , you ask? What's up with that?
    You are a teen born in 1950. Your dad is still mad at Ed Sullivan for putting the Beatles on his show in 1964. Guess what, your house is NOT getting a STEREO record player; the MONO one he bought in 1955 is just fine, thank you. It still plays the 78 RPMs he and Mom collected after they got married in '44. And that black and white TV is NOT getting upgraded to color until you go away to college in 1968.
    Furthermore, the record department at the Broadway department store (300 yards from your junior high) offers mono LPs for $4; stereo for $5. You're 15 and on the fence about that extra $1.
    ~~~~
    IMO, the Buffalo Springfield and the Yardbirds had similar histories but on different continents. They both launched super groups and famous solo careers from their initial rosters at roughly the same time, e.g. CSN, CSNY, Led Zeppelin, Cream, Neil Young, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck ....
    • @brucepatbland837
      @brucepatbland837 9 місяців тому +1
      As a high schooler during this time (1966) with a crude record player setup, I could save $1 (about 25% of the total cost) if I bought a mono version. Stereo was brand new and too new for me in 1966, so I have some mono records from the '60s that I still treasure.😁
    • @bagoquarks
      @bagoquarks 9 місяців тому
      @@brucepatbland837 Yes, do NOT discard any LP of that period, mono or otherwise. For example, I have a mono version of 'December's Children' by the Rolling Stones.
    I personally don’t think they hold up. I really struggle with this band. I want to like them. I really do. I just find their albums to be hodgepodge and uninteresting for the most part, other than a couple of Stills songs and the songs Young featured on Decade. They never sound cohesive, like a band. Production is all over the place. Richie ruins the Neil songs. Maybe you had to be there/record buying age at the time to really appreciate them? Weird, I know coming from a big Neil fan.
    The Doors album was Weird Scenes Inside The Gold Mine. Haven’t heard the one you compared to that. Always willing to give them another try and hope I get it. I want to.
