    To caption the obvious, when I say “best” it is my subjective opinion. 😁
    Edit: as it’s been almost 2 years since this video has been made, I seem to have stuck my foot in my mouth. As suppressing them is exactly what I did. Surefire RC2. And they are awesome. Though less manageable as you would expect when shooting from a barricade or the inside of a car etc. But everything is a trade off. That said, 12.5 is still the GOAT 🐐 🙌🏻 I double down on this

      My research and combat training has led me to view the 12.5 as the best overall length as well... self defense, urban close quarters combat, moderate distance battle field combat, operation from a vehicle, effective power or velocity, reliability with a mid length gas tube and sufficient dwell time... the 12.5 may not be the best at any of those, but can do all of those pretty well. I am looking to buy probably a Zion15 12.5" in 5.56 this week. Is the Socom barrel better than the government profile... I don't know.
      I don't know why 10.5" has become sort of the standard in ar pistols. I want to get into doing builds, but I'm not comfortable doing that without much help, so the Zion looks good to me so far.

      @@MrBurdinekl honestly, the disparity between socom and government cuts on a 12.5 barrel are so negligible that it’s probably not worth noting and strictly preference. Barrel flex may play a part at 500 yards or more giving the government cut the advantage but a 12.5 isn’t a long range gun. Ultimately, it honestly boils down to aesthetic. What will make a difference is gas length.

      I agree 100% 12.5 is the best barrel length on suppressed for a SBR. I have a 12.5 upper for mine and a 10.5 for my suppressed upper. I tried a suppressor on the 12.5 and it’s just not for me. That 2 inches less makes a pretty substantial weight savings. Plus with my home and property. The chances I’m shooting past 200 yards is almost 0 so a 10 five suppressed works perfectly for me. A lot of it just comes down to use case. That said, I’d say 10.3 is probably the shortest you should ever go in 5.56. I may make a 7.5” 300 blackout if I want to go shorter than 10.5”.

      I can add some lesser known evidence to it, it's about the absolute longest barrel lengths that can shoot 55gn ammo effectively with 1:7 twist. People confuse that, it's not the twist rate alone, it's too long of a barrel AND too aggressive of a twist rate that's an issue. 12.5" 1:7 barrels get 55gn rounds right there up to 300k RPM, which is considered the maximum you should spin it up to. You figure out the RPM by (muzzle velocity in feet per second x 12 inches per foot) / (7 inches for one rotation) x (60 seconds per minute) = RPM. People think the 1:7 is the issue, but it's not, and the reason they see issues with accuracy is because they likely have a longer barrel and the bullets are pretty much on the cusp or actually disintegrating in flight. They basically melt and come apart in air from reaching such a high RPM in longer barrels.

    The IWI Zion 12.5” pistol has a mid length gas system. It’s not as compact as some AR pistols out there, but as far as functionality I’d say it’s the ideal pistol variant. It’s also a quality firearm that runs under the $1000 mark. I picked one up today from Bud’s gun shop online with free shipping for $828.

      We had M16A1s in my first unit, which I really liked. Multiple generations of AR-15s have emerged since then.
      I consider the M16A1 and Colt 653 carbine the capstones of the first Generation, which included the 1957 prototypes, 1959 Colt 601, 602, 603 (M16A1), USAF 604, 605 Carbine, 606 HBAR, 607 Commando, 608 USAF Survival Rifle, XM177, XM177E2, GAU-5A, GAU-5A/A, 656 Sniper, etc.
      M16A2 marked the entrance to the 2nd Generation which included the Colt 723, 727, and 733 carbines/commandos.
      M4 came from the 727, ushering in the 3rd Generation, which also included M16A4.
      Within M4/M4A1, you have SOPMOD Blocks.
      On the civilian side, it exploded with variations and trends, the biggest one being high performance intermediate cartridge and alternate chamberings, free-float as a dominant baseline, excellent triggers, billet receiver sets, endless furniture options, and all while a revolution in optics and electro-optical aiming devices has emerged.
      I think the quintessential example of all this is a 12" 6.5 Grendel AR-15, which can not only excel at HD, but hunting and long range shooting, all in the size of an MP5.

    I think everything should be suppressed (suppressable), regardless of length.
    Guns shot a lot are seldom carried a lot (patrol, walknhunt, or in/out of vehicles). Guns carried a lot are seldom shot, so weight and length are more of a factor. The additional weight/length for a suppressed 12"+ is irrelevant for people that actual train and compete year round.
    The benefits of a suppressor far outweigh the costs.
    The problem lies with civilians who don't train or compete that have to justify their tacticool purchases by imaging what the weapon would theoretically be used for in a zombie apocalypse that they aren't prepared for.

    • @jp71889
      @jp71889 Рік тому +1

      @@adamg574 yep. General rule for 1/2-28 threading is you’ve got about a .7” delta between the threads on the end of the barrel and the chamber that sits in the receiver beyond where the handguard contacts the receiver. In short, with an 11.7” handguard on a 12.5” barrel the base of the muzzle device will sit perfectly flush with the end of the handguard. An 11.5” handguard on 12.5” barrel will give you an extra .2” or so of wiggle room. And that flush fit (11.7 on 12.5) will almost always work perfectly with suppressors since most of them are tapered toward the mounting end.

      The 10.5 was created by Colt as a Submachinegun alternative Before the 11.5” and before the M203. Colt created the 11.5 because of reliability issues on the 10.5 due to lack of dwell time. It also helped to reduce the flash and blast of the 10.5”. The short length rifles were always a specialist weapon used primarily by MACV-SOG and some other Special Forces units, as they still are today. The Military continued on with the 20” M16 until the 80s when they wanted to replace their grease guns (yes ww2 era grease guns) for vehicle crewman etc. The 14.5 M4 was then born (that length was mainly to fit the M203) The M4 was then almost universally adopted inthe late 90s as the reduction in velocity/overall effective range was determined to not be a huge deal vs the benefit of shorter length for guys enterring and exiting vehicles and for logistics of everyone using the same gun

    Primary Weapons Systems makes a really nice 11.85" long stroke piston driven AR15 with 3 adjustable gas block. 2 positions on the gas block are for shooting suppressed, the piston makes shooting suppressed a lot cleaner in your upper. The 11.85" length is for exportation reasons but I find it's a really nice length for maneuvering and having decent ballistics. The downside is some unique parts in instances you may need to make repairs.

    Definitely an interesting perspective. I’m still new the nfa and sbr realm. I’ve been considering a 12.5 for the reasons you have mentioned but I am curious as to why you’ve mentioned a 12.5 if you’re not going to suppress your rifle? Is there a reason for not suppressing the 12.5? I’d like to eventually go the sbr route with my rifle however I’d like to suppress it. Do you have any recommendations then?

    • @theuncouthtruth9551
      @theuncouthtruth9551  2 роки тому +10

      Perhaps it came off wrong. Not saying you shouldn’t suppress a 12.5 but when you start getting beyond that length, it becomes a bit less manageable in tight spaces with the added can. It’s all subjective though I suppose. One thing is certain. 12.5 is superior to every barrel length that is shorter

    • @theuncouthtruth9551
      @theuncouthtruth9551  2 роки тому +10

      In your particular situation, I’d go 11.5 if it was me and I planned to suppress and planned on doing close range and any mid range shooting out to 300 yards. If you are consistently shooting 400+ I’d try the 12.5 It’s pretty unmanageable after that. Certainly for cqbr. Most who suppress these days go with 10.5 or 10.3. It’s a popular length for that reason. I wanted to raise awareness in the video that an extra inch or two will have exponentially improved performance.

    why is a POLICE DEPARTMENT allowed to make laws for a whole country , it’s like my local pd making laws for my district

    Newbie here - why not suppressed is it not good suppressed or do you mean there are better lengths for suppressed?

    • @theuncouthtruth9551
      @theuncouthtruth9551  Рік тому

      No. I shoved my foot well into my mouth. The reason I say unsupressed is because it’s less manageable around corners and tight spaces. But I actually suppressed both and I absolutely love it. Where it really counts is around cars and on a Vtac barricade. There’s a difference but considering how much more velocity you get, the cost benefit supressed is negligible. I recommend the 12.5 either or. Because it’s a great length

    Can you clarify tbh I get confused on these ar “pistol” laws. I have the Zion 15 pistol, can I put a vertical grip on? Did I hear that right or did I miss something

    • @theuncouthtruth9551
      @theuncouthtruth9551  2 роки тому +3

      Yes. You heard that right. You can. Just no stock. Must be a brace. The OAL is greater than 26” so a VFG is allowed. But because the barrel is less than 16” it must have a brace. This is classified as “firearm”. Not a rifle. Not a pistol. And not an NFA item like an AOW or SBR.

    I only have a suppressed 9in BCM in 300blk and have been debating on if I should get a 556 or not for months. The only reason I'm considering one is ammo compatibility with more people, but my closest friends already own 300blk guns anyway. 🤷‍♂️

      Similar situation here. Not sure there’s a point to a SBR 5.56 when I have a 9” 300blk, so might just go 14.5, but the velocity differences between 12.5 and 14.5 aren’t too significant.

      @Adam G I actually ended up going 556 now haha. It is so nice being able to just buy ammo cheaper than even reloading 300blk.
