★About Professor Herp★
I started getting into the reptile hobby in February of 2018. My first reptile was my Bearded Dragon - Maxine Pegasus (creator of duel monsters btw). Since then, I have added five Yellow Ackie Monitors (Asus, Dell, LG, and two unnamed babies), a Chacoan Black and White Tegu (Frappuccino), a Crested Gecko (Destin), and a Russian Tortoise (Tortellini). I also have a dog named Thrall (yes, from World of Warcraft) who is a Dachshund/Chihuahua mix - aka a Chiweenie.
My goal with this channel is to share my knowledge, experience and journey with other reptile/animal enthusiasts and become a better caretaker because of it. Hopefully I can learn a lot from the community through these videos.

wish someone would tell my dozer about fruit and vegetables.. he really isn’t keen and will skip them unless I’m super sneaky.. at a year old I’m not to worried yet as I know at that age they need a bit more protein.. hard work tho .. it reminds me of when my kids were little trying to sneak more veggies into them 🤣

I realized recently how complex it is to even own an actual dog. Despite knowing AR tegus are quite different from them despite their tameability, id prefer a tegu overal haha.
I am wanting a Tegu.. just reading and debating on if I should get 1.. 🤔 my beared dragon was a rescue. Looking into ever aspect of Tegu care. Thanks for the upload.

Side comment on harnesses if you buy one of the ones for babies that have the press ball to tighten it, my girl got smart and learned how to get it off. If this happens to you put a safety pin above the ball and they can't slid it anymore.

they could live anywhere really with a proper indoor setup. You may be able to do outdoors year round if youre south enough. Look up Rose City Reptiles. Hes in Texas and breeds them (all outdoors)

eh usually those people don't have the best husbandry. If you are not always looking to improve then there is probably an issue existing somewhere.
What Age can you start leash training?
whenever you feel comfortable with them outside the enclosure. Handling them.
The only problem that would come with feeding meat/organs and not whole animals is the calcium and phosphorus ratio. It’s suppose to be 2:1. Phosphorus level on its own means nothing, it needs to be in context. This is why it’s not a problem if you only feed them whole preys as it comes with the bones for calcium just like in nature. Otherwise just supplement with adequate calcium with meat and organ feed.
I don’t understand why people insist on grinding everything into mince to feed their tegu, they don’t get their protein this way in the wild. Imagine how filling it is to eat a steak as it is, then imagine grinding the same steak into mince, it would come out half the size as mince. You would have to eat a lot more to feel just as full. They would end up eating a lot more phosphorus than they would if they ate whole pieces as whole food is more filling.
Tegu in the wild eat wild fruit, they don’t really eat plants or vegetables as we call it. 30% of their diet is wild fruit, that’s right you saw right “wild fruit”, not your average supermarket bred versions which has been modified to be extremely high in sugar. They don’t need this much sugar especially in captivity, it will just make them fat. Let’s not forget many fruits and begs are high in oxalates and this binds to calcium to form calcium oxalate aka kidney stones but in the cases of reptiles it’ll prevent absorption of calcium.
Trying to replicate the wild in captivity is flawed notion in my experience/opinion. Yes, their native habitat serves as inspiration, but it is impossible to match. Additionally, their native area is not a haven. It has its own problems for the species. We can do better and accomplish the same in captivity compared to the wild.
I don't necessarily agree with your line of thinking and think there are some holes you are not considering but appreciate your insight! My guy has never been healthier than on Reptilinks. Tried so many other diets. Works great.
I ordered repti links for a baby Tegu it was grayish color mostly fur and smelled like kerosene .My intuition said not to use it.🦎

Funny I used to make fun of people that spent $500+ on purebred dogs. Now I'm just a hypocrite with mutts and lizards. 😂
