It is actually the fault of the teachers here. They cannot make their courses or subjects interesting for students that is why the students fail to gain interest in it. Watching someone write code on board is not amazing to everyone. There needs to be interactivity, more visualisation which could improve students ability to imagine things. The more they can imagine, the more they could learn. About the GOT series interest and stuff, it is more like I feel a peer pressure outcome. Many people watch TV Series like GOT, Narcos, Breaking Bad, etc. just because it is a popular trend to follow, they may not be exactly interested in it (though all the shows are really awesome). So, if somehow learning programming could be made a popular trend to follow, maybe many students would be attracted to it. The success which they get in their pursuit will vary depending on their effort and their capability, but essentially more people will be involved.
Then why node Js is not asked in Gate,Isro e.t.c exams?? I think for a final year student it is very much important to have a good basic. I have seen few brilliant guys in coding( when I say brilliant, I mean it) studying in bad colleges, having bad not so good cgpa's as a result not getting any job or getting an ordinary job. On the other hand the guy with medium to no coding knowledge excels perfectly with automata,networks and architecture....cracks Gate and ends up in IITB and now he is in foreign... And i regret it coz the syllabus which "the well reputed university" provides is so fuckin outdated . they are still in era of windows xp, Microsoft office 2003... I went there for knowledge , not for a stamp of a degree holder. I failed in exams , i m in my 6th sem and i have 4 backs. Coz i am working on my skills . and the irony is the guys and girls who got great marks don't know what html5,css, JavaScript is. Some of them don't even know what is the difference between div and span. Teachers don't know how to install a web and database server . i am working on a single page web app with jquery and php. Whenever the so called toppers see me coding , they say that i will go insane one day and i just show them two middle fingers . i have learned everything on my own. Go with eclipse or intelli j. Eclipse is the industry standard. Many companies also use Intelli J. Intelli J is a commercial product but it also has a community edition (free) with lesser features. I personally just use eclipse as its free and I've seen it being used more commonly for several years in many companies.

Bro it is always better to try different things throughout the engineering,you just have to maintain your cgpa.Since you are asking about 1st year,i would say better have some basic coding practice of languages like python,java etc

It doesn't depends upon which field u belong to.if u have good knowledge about any language u can surely get a job instead of cse student who hasn't.

Companies usually ask some programming questions,you just have to come up with a correct solution.Language doesn't really matter,check geeks for geeks site for interview realted questions practice them with any language you prefer
