    I like the cross-deck training, but it would be cool to have a Rafale squadron actually deploy on a US carrier for 3-6 months. Would be interesting.

      @@broadside5994 Not a full up deployment, but Rafales and French E-2s went to the US for a big exercise with the Navy. It was more so the French pilots could stay qualified.

      It’d be interesting in no small part to see how the French and American servicemen get along working together in close quarters for that long. I say that not as an anti-French thing or anything; it’d be true of any ally on one of our boats for an extended time. But that’s likely what we’d end up with in wartime, so we should train for that too. It’s not the easiest thing getting along with foreign servicemen, no matter who you are.

      @@yxeaviationphotog french guy here, I think the french navy pilots go in the US for a few months and they get 2 diplomas, US and French. Also, only France and the US have nuclear aircraft carriers.

      If you look for Pierre Sprey.
      You'll find out the brain behind the F16 is born French.
      F14 TomCat.
      If you search for it you'll find out the switch wings are a Dassault design.
      French again...

      Pierre Sprey had no contributions whatsoever to the actual design of the F-16. He’s just a man in the fighter mafia who takes interviews and criticizes advanced fighter jets and forces the public to think that crop dusters are good for peer-to-peer engagements, and that dogfighting is still relevant.
      I, or anyone, would never take the word of a man who considers dogfights as “relevant” in the age of modern missiles, radars, stealth coatings, laser weapons, and unmanned drones.

      @@davidnelson1134 tens of thousands of french people, most part women children died in American bombings, I live near a city on the sea side that used to be beautiful but it was leveled by b-17 and b-24… the Nazi and french pro Nazi propaganda tried to use this to turn the opinion against the USA but it didn't work and the troops were welcomed with joy, kisses and party in every town and village so I wouldn't call that ungrateful. I'm personally grateful. Have a great uncle who was in the free french forces, he fought from north Africa to Germany on a .... Sherman tank. He was grateful. Not everything is all black or white. The first American fighter pilots flew on french planes in the french air force in WW1. The first American tanks were Renault. It also went both way you see. Our alliance made your country.

      Every ten years or so they get together and train on board one of our carriers while the Charles DeGaulle is out for maintenance. Four years ago they had Chesapeake 2018, which involved 12 Rafales, 1 French E2C Hawkeye, along with 350 French Sailors living and training on board the USS George Bush for two weeks. ua-cam.com/video/q_UeD4-GhzE/v-deo.html

    Don't quote me on that but if I remember correctly, the Rafale M is the only non american made jet fighter allowed to land and take off of US aircraft carriers.

      That’s because currently, aside from the US, only France operates an aircraft carrier that can catapult aircrafts and use wires to stop them when landing.
      So they developed the rafale marine to operate on the Charles de Gaulle, so obviously it can land on American ones (as they are bigger, it’s actually easier to land on them).
      Only aircrafts capable of vertical landing could land on those aircraft carriers, and because aside from the harrier which isn’t in service anymore, no one else appart from the Americans make them, so only f35 from other countries could land on aircraft carriers

      @@salekondrej You could be right, unless the surfaces of catobar carriers are treated with heat absorbing coatings as well. F35B's are already capable of landing on the QE and POW, as well as American amphibious assault ships, which some people refer to as mini-carriers, as well as the Italian Cavour and the Japanese Izumo. .

      The rafale's F4 standard makes it a 5th-generation jet on a par with the F-22 or F-35, even though we have a much smaller budget than the US.

      @@tavolo2969 Take a look to all foreign evaluations where rafale and eurofighter were competitor (Suitzerland, Nederland...). Rafale had better scores than Eurofighter in all types of mission, air to air included. Eurofighter is still a very good aircraft, but less than rafale ;)

    Magnifique !!! Last time I saw the F/A 18 land on the CDG and it was very impressive especially since it is smaller and it must not be easy, so respect to the US Navy pilots.

      The CDG is obviously smaller than US carriers but the landing area itself appears to be just a bit smaller, so it probably wasn't too difficult for US Navy pilots. Size won't be an issue for France's next carrier though as it will be the second largest carrier in the world at 75,000 tons of displacement compared to its current 42,000 on the CDG.

      it's true, on the other hand on the CDG the US pilots will have to learn to master their machines, among the French pilots a lot of pretenders but few elected in the end and at night it's even worse on a rough sea.

    Great to see all comments talking bout frenches and americans forces as allies, I got to Norkfolk in april and discussing there I learnt that Norfolk harbor bornt when fighting for US independance with frenches against english marine battleships. US people decided then to get their own marine forces and built ships in Chesapeake Bay

    Landing on uss carriers are probably so easy for french/non us pilots because the dimensions of the ship are so huge compare to non us carriers

    Probably one of, or the best current aircraft. It is twin-engine, therefore more reliable and costs less than its main competitor. It has the disadvantage of not having an ammunition bay.

    I notice that the rafale took off without afterburner, with two external fuel tank. Is its dry thrust that powerful?

      No, but it's made to takeoff from a shorter deck. CDGs catapults are only 75m (250 feet), and maybe the weight wasn't that high. Also notice the high AoA of the plane.

      I believe there are universal gestures that we all understand but I’ve only ever been on a U.S. Carrier

      I don't know but most of the french navy pilots are also graduated from the US, so I think they use the same tools

      French pilots are trained in Meridian, Mississippi, so I thing they learn a common system

      F14 was a significantly larger aircraft. The MTOW alone for an F14 was nearly 20,00 lbs more.

      @@jeffj126 true ,but the exhaust angled toward the deck like the French aircraft. I was blown over a few times by the exhaust of a tomcat, as well as a prowler and even one time an E2C

      @@markmilam3152 Rafale M have reinforced gears specialy designed for CATOBAR launching and Charles de Gaulle Carrier use the same CATOBAR tech as US Carriers (it was bought from them)

    All the French combat pilots are super trained and among the best in the world but by habit in the French armies it is said that the best of the best in our Rafale pilots are those of the Navy and not of the Air Force. ^^ I think that it's the same with you in the USA and in all the armies of the world which have a Navy Air Force on aircraft carriers.
