Very good, Graham. Here's a tip for collectors. There are many forgeries of complete map sheets, these are imperforated. For a genuine sheet with a certificate it will probably set you back a couple of hundred dollars/pounds/euros. If you see them from Italy selling for around 40 euros, you can bet they are fakes. Some years ago I bought two sheets for around 30 euros each, one with and one without gum, just for research. Both had the same map and on very close inspection they had identical flecks of red in the exact same place in the margins. Regarding genuine sheets, the perforated sheet is more expensive than the imperf. So, be aware, everybody!
Such an important tip!! Thank you Rick
I added these stamps to my collection years ago, but had to wait for Exploring Stamps to create an accurate and interesting explanation. Thank goodness all the maps didn't end up wrapping fish!
😅 Thank goodness! Glad you enjoyed the video Chai, they are such interesting stamps.
This is what I love about stamps is the history :)Thanks
🙌. Right there with you! Thanks for watching 😊
Yes. YES. YES!!! FINALLY! A video about my homeland!
🙌😊🇱🇻
This hobby continues to impress me!
Same! Best hobby ever. 😎
indeed, many layers, backprinting is a fun arena, New Zealand ads in 1880's, Lithuania banknotes, informative 1900's Portugal, Dom Rep etc.
Excellent 👍
Thank you 😊
There is a seller at my local flea market who has a ton of stamps from all over the world. I hope he has them too. And now I also want to collect the whole map
I hope so as well! Definitely keep an eye out for the stamps, they are really cool to study and own. :)
What a great research uncovering our history. I would say Latvian philately is even more complicated thanks to R.Zariņš one of the main stamp designers in Russian empire, first Russian Soviet stamps (I suppose first Belarussian provisional) and then lots of iconic Latvian free state stamps and coins, his design is still on the euro coin
Oh wow, R.Zariņš looks to be a really interesting person, thank you for mentioning. I am going to have to read up more about him. Glad you enjoyed the video, thanks for watching 😊
@@ExploringStamps from materials I have access to it seems there might be some X-files as well, as those philatelists in exile didn't have access to archives
The first issue from Latvia is not the only time the country repurpose a stock of paper to print a stamp issue. Latvia Scott #63 were printed on the back of sheets of unissued bank notes.
That is just fascinating! Dedicated to reusing and recycling 😊. Thanks for sharing James!
1. Effective intro -- hooks the viewer right in. I want a stamp like that and am all buckled up for the rest of the ride.
2. Unrolling a map! Long time since we were treated to that motif. Latvia, Lithuania, Lithuania, Latvia. I always get these two countries confused -- hopefully this visual will help. Which country were we talking about...? ;-)
3. Stamp closeup in HD. Drooling.... No stamp design is as simple as it initially looks. These annotated stamp examinations always succeed in teasing out the special from the plain.
4. Clear narration with all the historic details falling into place and interconnecting.
A+
Wow an A+, you are far too kind 😅
Thank you for all your support, I was wondering if the intro was revealing too much. Each of these videos get such a different average view duration, its a science trying to figure out if I am placing the details in the right spots. I'm so glad that you enjoyed the video 😊
ad 2 - In Polish they're called "Litwa" and "Łotwa" - that was damn confusing for me as a kid especialy that I as I heard a lot about Lithuania (historical commonweatlh, Lithuanian dynasty of Polish kings etc.) Latvia was uknown for me for years :)
I really want to buy a full map!! Great video again.
Same, I am very tempted to get one. Thanks for watching 😊
Superb!!! Physical tangible history. I love the idea of piecing them together to complete a whole map... I'm going to get on that!! Fantastic video as usual 👍👍
Thanks John!! Glad you enjoyed the video 😊
How wonderful! and an excellent example of recycling... I'm very temped to get a sheet, I love maps :)
♻️😆 Exactly! Latvia setting examples back in 1918. Get a sheet if you can, I have been really tempted as well.
@@ExploringStamps its around 300 eur, could be affordable if not other stamps
You almost need a map to work out which ones you need to complete the set. Very cool project for someone to try to collect them all, I guess the blocks help
I can't imagine how I would even start this project... it would be really cool to see someone complete a map 😀
Another excellent episode!
Thank you Louis 😊
Excellent presentation 👏👌
Thank you 😊
Love the video/history lesson! I’m gonna have to keep my eyes out for those Latvian stamps now!
Yes absolutely!! Def keep a look out for it them 😊. Thanks Mallard!
Thanks for thIs absolutely FASCINATING episode! You are the best philately mentor I’ve ever heard speak, Grant.👍 Kindest regards from Cleveland, Ohio, 🇺🇸 USA.
Thank you Alan 😊. Glad that you enjoyed the episode, thanks for watching!
Very interesting! Also fun fact is that when the Estonians fought the Germans in Latvia for both of their independence wars, they used Estonian postage in Latvia. But the covers are rare
Interesting! I did not know this, I imagine the covers would be rare. Thanks for sharing. 🙂
Nice, I briefly collected modern stamps on piece for the Baltic states, after the Soviets fell.
As always, I very much enjoyed this video about Latvian stamps. When I inherited a large stamp collection, I found a complete bank note with Latvia Scott #63 printed on the back. In order to get the complete bank note, 6 stamps on either side were cut in half, while 3 stamps in the middle are undamaged. The stamps are CTO and the bank note side is fully gummed. It is accompanied by a period letter written by a serviceman stationed in France with the following message:” I am enclosing a piece of Bolshevick money. When the Bolshevicks left Riga, this money was left behind and the Lelts being short of paper printed stamps there on.” I have kept this in my collection.
Great video. I have several of them and they are really cool. Glad to see a video bring them to light again.
Thank you! They are really great items to have in your collection, thanks for watching 😊
This video really amazed me. This fact shows how important were the stamps for symbolizing the sovereignity of a Nation despite their shortage on paper. Great video👍👍👍👍👍
Glad you enjoyed it 😊. Stamps sure do symbolize sovereignty, and this is a great example of how a country was determined to have them printed. Thanks for watching!
Graham, you are a blessing to the hobby. This was so interesting on a point that I was disappointed when it was over. I wanted more!
Aw thank you Sylvain, glad you enjoyed the video. 😊
I have a number of these stamps-- its like a puzzle! they are fascinating -- thank you for this post!!!
You are so welcome! Such amazing stamps to own and study 😊
I wonder if anyone has been able to piece a map together by collecting blocks or individuals?
Amazing! Thanks for educating me on this part of history, great information. I really hope someone is building a collection of these, would be fantastic!
I hope so too! Glad you enjoyed the video, thanks for watching 😊
at a stamp show, I met a collector that specialized in these. He had over 4000, said there are I think it was 9 different maps, those in just black (maybe just one map) were scarce (many have red in areas) - but not all positions will show all colors. A fun puzzle stamp
Ok this is just waaaaay too cool!! I can’t wait to tell people about how the first stamps were printed on the backs of German maps! I will for sure be keeping an eye out for them in the future!
I love stamps of the baltic states, the history they show is amazing. When they first were issuing stamps after the fall of the USSR, I got interested in how the international community handled their mail, since they were not a part of the UPU right away. Most ones I have are on old USSR prestamped enevlopes
That is really interesting! I didn't think of what that transition period would have been like. Thanks for sharing Robert!
@@ExploringStamps I reread what I wrote it should read, former USSR prestamped envelopes (airmail) covering the international portion of the trip with new local stamps covering the in country part of the trip Like the old Hawaiian covers that bore Hawaiian stamps to get to the US and US stamps for the rest of the trip. Collecting covers is so much fun.
Great story. You read my mind about finding stamps to conjure up a map ,like a jigsaw puzzle.Something new today. Can you number your vlog's this one is vlog 11
Stamp won't let you live through the day without learning something new :)
Not a single day goes by without me learning something new thanks to stamps. 😊
WOW, great video! I never knew stamps were printed on the back of a map. That is amazing to learn. KEEP UP THE GREAT PHILATELY! :)
Thank you! Will do! 😊
Wonderful story about the history of a country and the stamps that enshrine that history.....👍🏻👍🏻
It sure is an interesting story, thanks for watching Gary 😊
After 49 years of stamp collecting, I am still learning.. Anyway, great show.
Excellent tutorial again 😁
Thank you 😊
Hey Graham! Great video!!! 😃It's so fascinating and also very cool to see a person so dedicated to philately. I also started collecting stamps and I discovered a lot of interesting things thanks to you. By the way, I'm from Romania 😅🇷🇴🇷🇴
You are very welcome David, glad that you are enjoying the channel. Thanks for watching in Romania 😊
That’s really interesting. I love how stamps can tell the story of a countries history.
It's what interests me the most about stamps, how they tie to a country's history. So interesting! Thanks for watching Laura 😊
Fascinating story! Love your videos! Keep them coming.
Another great show, Graham. Enjoyed it immensely. As another viewer pointed out, you do have to watch out for forgeries, especially on sheets or large blocks, as there were plenty of those maps available for anyone to find, not just the post office.
Thank you Ted 😊. Since you brought it up as well, I just went and pinned Rick's comment about the forgery warning. Can't be too careful and I hope that folks check out reliable sources for the maps.
ACK! I didn't receive a notification of upload! But I'm here! Greetings from Canada, love your content keep it up bro! Side note, you should verbally promote your swag in each of your videos!
Thank you for watching in Canada Dwayne 😊, glad you enjoyed the videos. I will have to start promoting my swag or wear it more often 😅
I was an avid stamp collector in my youth up to age 16, a hobby I shared with my father. When my father died in 1972, life took over and I abandoned the hobby. I still have both my and my father's stamps and albums but I have not really looked at them much for decades now. All the stamps, of course, date from 1972 or previous years. I have you to blame for rekindling my interest !!! Very much enjoy your excellent videos. Thank you :-) Subscribed.
After watching this excellent video I purchased a few single and double stamps printed on maps from a dealer in Latvia , then wishing to increase my collection I bought some "ordinary" old Latvian stamps from a dealer in Luxembourg I leave you to imagine my delight to find two stamps within that purchase that had been printed on the back of banknotes and wondered if you had come across this . with my regards and also thanks for your interesting and informative videos RNK
Oh wow, yes some folks have mentioned to me about the banknote stamps... but I havent come across them yet. Congrats on your acquisition, those are all very special stamps to have. Glad you enjoyed the video Bob, thank you so much for watching 😊
That is way too cool with the maps on the back!!! 😲
Thank you for an interesting episode.
Never fails to impress.
Stamps are continually impressing me, thanks for watching 😊🙏
Great video Graham! Thanks! Greetings from Argentina.
Thank you Francisco! And thank you for watching in Argentina 🇦🇷 😊
Another great video. I will have to ask my stamp dealer to supply me with these soon 😂😂. Would be so cool to have a full sheet
It would be very cool, i really enjoy having the 2 blocks at the moment, such a cool piece of history 😊
As always so fascinating and informative video thanks 😍😍👍👍
You are very welcome, thank you for watching 😊
Fascinating story. Thanks so much for these videos! Keep them coming.
Very interesting. I have a modern stamp ofLutvia. Ukraine is 1918. I only have one. USSR: 2 collections. Great show.
Thanks David, glad you enjoyed it 😊🙏
Greetings from Clay County, Missouri !
Another GR8 video ! Went back to check my collection, as I do remember printing on the backs.
Couldn't find a #1 1918 printing, but the semi-postals B1-4 look to be printed on brown or green bank-notes.
I'll have to check the UNmounted ones next
Thanks again, Graham ! 530 thumbs UP !
Ive been to Riga and really enjoyed the city! Now I need to get these stamps! Very cool video thank you.
Oh definitely! Keep a look out for them 👍

Thank you for this video. I’ve just decided to start a Latvia (my homeland) stamp album and this was very informative 🙏
Oh wow! That is wonderful, Latvia will make for a rewarding collection to build and explore. 🇱🇻 💛 😊
I thank you for this video ! 👍🍀🇱🇻🇱🇻🇱🇻
You are very welcome 😊. Thank you for watching 🇱🇻
Graham back to his old form. This one is very informative. Being geography nerd myself, I found the bit to German maps very interesting.
Sometimes I watch one of your wonderful videos and think "oh, I want that stamp!" And sometimes I watch a video and get the pleasure of learning about a stamp I already own 😁 in this case, I actually just recently bought one of these first issue Latvian stamps, on a whim. It was cheap and pretty and I didn't have any stamps from Latvia. I had no idea there was a map on the back because I hadn't done anything with it yet besides acknowledge that it came. I'm so excited to do a little write up about this stamp for my collection now 😁😁😁
Graham, An absolutely wonderful and enlightening show. How do you come up with these great idea.
Another great show.👍 I'm going to visit Riga when this damn pandemic will ease. Friends say it's a beatiful city.
I am from India ,excellent information.
Thank you for watching in India 😊

I tend to refer to the Baltic states as "formerly dead countries."
Ah that works 😅. The formerly dead or the resurrected countries. 👍
Wow, that was interesting!
Glad you thought so Erica! Thanks for watching 😊
Greetings from Latvia!
Thank you for watching in Latvia 🇱🇻 🙏😊
Lovely video Graham! I watched so many of yours already and am a big fan of your presentation. I have been collecting stamps for a good month now. There is so much to learn and it is hard to focus just on certain areas/countries.
Anyway, keep up the good work. I am looking forward to your new videos as well as catching up to the ones you already released.
Thank you for the information 👍
You are very welcome 😊
Your channel is amazing.
Thank you! Glad you are enjoying the videos 🙂
I am from Latvia and i have some interesting stamps in my old collection, like ussr stamps with Latvia printed over them before real latvian stamps were printed
I'm from latvia.
🙌 Thanks for watching 🇱🇻
Very cool! So, would we call Latvia a resurrected country? Are there any others 🤔 👀?
As Graham says - many of the other former Soviet republics like Lithuania and Estonia.
Yes there are a few, I believe Lithuania, Estonia, Ukraine, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia would all count. I THINK they all went through periods where they didn't issue stamps as well.
Thankyou very much.👋👋👋Paldies.
Thank you 🙏 😊 🇱🇻
Outstanding
Thank you 😊
At one stage Jacob's Well was a tavern guess like Arndale mall and many other places around there was called Taverns that's how John Travolta got his name a copycat Italian
Interesting, but my all time favorite of unusual paper usage is stamps printed on cigarette paper, like East Saxony under Soviet occupation, or Ceylon Revenues from the late 19th century for example...
Awesome :-)
Thank you :)
So informative.
good subject you covered Graham of maps indeed it makes you wonder who was holding all the deeds the Russians
They had such a paper shortage, is why they did this. It's so interesting, this hobby.
Very cool 👍
Interesting facts
Hello Graham, i love the stamp lamps on the wall, where did you get those? greetings from the Netherlands !

Me too!! 😀
great presentation . informative and entertaining. packet filler material of a time before CTOs got the job.
Can you do a full collection video please
That would be a very long video 😬
Same for mine if I had a chanell
so did they just put the glue over the map image? I guess i would hesitate to lick that.
Yeah I guess they just gummed the map side.... 😝
Not all stamps in the world have glue on the back, some add glue when used.
@@bokhans oh really? huh. I learned something today. Thank you.
Question about your research process. At 6:52, you zoom in on the article referring to Latvia as a dead country.
Was this article found in the APS digital library or do you search other newspaper archives when you do research?
Sure! I have a subscription to newspaper archive.com, and it’s been really cool to research stamps, events etc by going through the newspapers and searching for key words or browsing through specific dates. I plan on discussing it in my next video 👍
The best video !
Nice video man. I recently acquired a member of my familys collection left to me. I don't know much about stamps. Seriously need help because i think i have something good with over 1280 pictures in my phone of pages of stamps dating as far back as 1850s. This collection had been stored away for over 25 years before i got them. PLEASE HELP!
I had Russian WWI and post WWI stamps printed on wallpaper. I would think the map would be of more importance than the stamps itself.
Don't get me wrong but there are many good Italians from Italy Italy it's about the Greek island and Venice
Would you like the location of of high-priced paintings from the Second World War where I found them and was given to Jacob's Well Central Council place of maps and deeds from the Roman time of Manningham Village
Yay!
😊
I was beaten up when I had won a contest of Mecca dancehall on Manningham Lane for free membership for one year to learn boy and girl dance together but they did not honour the championship that I had one I remember Tiffany's and Mecca and kid Jensen holding heets at Manningham Lane for the doubles
