Who else is excited for the upcoming Archenemy: Nicol Bolas? An Introduction To Archenemy, if you need it: ua-cam.com/video/HRT9PeDnX1E/v-deo.html #mtg
Professor, you have often said that one of the best ways to play Magic is to get six packs of cards, make a deck, and play against someone who has done likewise. Straight Sealed has always been one of my favorite formats in any of the CCG's. Would you consider a video where you and a friend do just that. Take six packs each of the same block, crack them open, and make a couple of decks, and play the game. Honestly, I think that would make an enjoyable video. Thanks for all the work you do on these videos.
I really wish mtg youtubers would do this. I love sealed format, it is so fun. Filming that would be harder than pack opening, but much more rewarding.
Professor, I bought my first booster box and it'll be delivered Monday. I want to tell you what we plan to do. My daughter loves drafting, so, we're going to draft the whole box, but not all at once. We plan to draft over months. Christmas morning, we might have an Amonkhet booster draft. Haven't you ever wanted to draft an older set, but there aren't boosters available? Also, after we do a draft, 100% of those cards go back into the booster box as a sort of "cube" that we will continue drafting from. Amonkhet will be entirely self-contained as no card from that box on Monday will ever be taken out and put in other decks. What do you think? We don't care about financial value, we don't care about singles (we already got the 5-6 cards we were looking for as singles), and we absolutely love drafting.
to me this sounds awesome, but you might consider buying different boxes/packs and doing sealed plane Vs plane style (4amonketh 2 hour of devastation Vs 4 innsistrad 2 Eldrich) :)
As a history buff I just think it would be so cool to draft Amonkhet and Theros block together, the sets aren't so different flavor wise anyways and it matches up with actual history.
I bought a box of theros a week ago because it was the last block with 'god' cards, and I wasn't disappointed. The new set looks to be enchantment heavy as well, which runs with Theros themed Karametra and such. Really interesting synergies going on there.
Yeah, the value just isn't there with this set, but the flavor is on point and that always makes a set more memorable for me anyway. Like, oh, I don't know, maybe THEROS! :)
Typically MTG cards have the most value during the first week of release, the reason being that there is a huge demand for the cards (everyone buying the new cards for their decks) and there is low supply, because a ton of it hasn't been opened yet. The Pro Tour will cause some cards to shoot up in value, but it'll cause others to plummet. It really just redistributes the value of the cards. We are past the peak for Amonkhet and the overall value of the set is all downhill from here until after it goes out of print. (Unless the fall set rotation causes some of these cards to be more playable, we'll see.)
I think it's a good thing for players when a set that feels as well designed as this has a top end of 20 bucks for singles. It's been cute seeing fetches and Goyfs at 100 bucks for years, but I don't think anyone outside of SCG and the like actually enjoyed that.
Not even SCG enjoys that, they've mentioned at least a couple times that they want more liquidity and would rather sell 100 $10 cards than 10 $100 cards. It's only subhuman "investors" who don't know what they're doing that want cards to be as expensive as possible even if that means nobody gets to play anymore.
I doubt it. It's about 2 or 3 per box I heard the proffesor a few times. I started less than one week ago and I don't have that much of experience opening booster packs but, the thing is Wizards states is about 1 in 67 so, your numbers would be correct. I don't really know to be honest, I just heard a few times it was about 2-3 but maybe I did heard because it is a bad result and not an expected one, wich would make sense "Oh damn, what a bad luck I had!".
Mythic rarity is in a normal set is 1:8, so for a standard set with 36 packs per box that average expected is 4.5 mythics. So the box in the video ended up being slightly above curve.
They print 2 sheets of rares per 1 sheet of mythics, and since amonkhet has 53 rares and 15 mythics, 53x2= 106 divided by 15= 7, so the odds are 1 in 7
While that's possible, the wiki has not had print sheet information updated since Eternal Masters, so we have no idea if they went with a weird layout in order to maintain their advertised rarity chance as closely as possible. WotC are particularly wary about being compared to gambling and have been quite up front about the chance of getting any particular card in the past in order to try to keep eyes off them by states particular about gambling laws and marketing gambling style games to underage players. I would not put it past them to have an extra sheet printed with a few of the cards to keep the ratios accurate. The 18 unique cards in the Planeswalker Decks and Deck Builder's Toolkit would give them an easy opportunity to do so.
Been looking forward to this one. I have an idea. If it isn't too troubling it might be cool to put a gas gage on the bottom left corner that represents how many packs are left in the box. It would be a fun way of ratcheting up some tension.
Unless he sticks with the format he proposed for round two of MM17, one video per box so people can't tell how things went from the video length. Hard to tell at this point, because they've been stinkers since then and he hasn't mentioned it since.
I used to think it was strange my kids would watch Lego Sets being opened on You Tube. And then I found The Professor's booster box games, and now I get it. Addicting.
I bought and drafted an Amonkhet box and had a lot of fun, and I'll always remember the rush of joy I had cracking a Nissa and a foil Bontu in one pack which changed my opinion of the box completely. You don't get that kind of feeling with singles. Besides, I like trading rares to get the cards I need. Plus the fact that most of the Amonkhet rares are dirt cheap means it'll be easy to buy extra singles if I do need them. Buying boxes is fun! I doubt most Magic players are actively out for a profit. The second the set rotates out of standard most valuable rares drop in value like a rock anyway.
Love the vid! I just had an idea while watching it though, I noticed myself keeping track of what pack you were on and thought it would be cool if you added a counter to how many packs you opened to give people an idea on how "on track" you are to finishing the box with over $100 worth of cards.
I went back and bought a box of Origins just to help the collection :) lot of good cards in there that I had forgotten about until I started cracking packs.
Can't wait for you to revisit the game after the pro tour! There were SEVERAL cards that got a boost in price shortly after launch which you pulled, prof. Liliana and Harsh Mentor are the two that come to mine, but I think Censor wen up to about 2 dollars as well? I'm not sure. Either way, I know we'll get to at least 2 boxes after the pro tour! :)
Hey, Professer! I would like to see a video of the top combos so that more people know how fun it is to play as them and how terrifying it is to play against them.
Amonkhet was the very first box of magic I ever opened. I got hazoret, rhonas, glorybringer, foil oketra, Gideon of the trials and aven mindcensor invocation. Those were the standouts anyway.
You should add a counter indicating which pack you're currently on out of 36 and maybe also an average value per pack that updates as you open each pack (using the same rules of not counting any cards under $2).
If people don't buy booster packs though, then how will cards on the secondary market get there? Also, while I fully agree that if you have a specific deck you want that it's probably better to buy the individual cards, booster packs and similar seem like a decent way to build up a collection of cards for a new player, who might not know the game well enough to be able/willing to build a full deck from the ground up card by individual card. While I'm not saying that I think newer players should go and buy a $100 box of booster packs, I feel like booster packs do still have a place outside of draft.
i agree. Buying sealed products gives money to the company and game itself, while also giving cards for the secondary market. I also think they have their uses to play with friends, have a big collection of cards (not everyone ONLY gets specific cards for decks and call it a day, I always like to think a card can have value or combo potential down the line if it isn't already so)
One of my favorite parts about new sets coming out is just watching these videos prove your point. People who buy boxes to open are throwing money down the toilet for the sake of a quick high from opening the packs. Also, for some reason I've grown unexpectedly fond of the BBG music.
Hello Professor, I'm a returning player and I wanted to start to play standard. I would like to know what is the best and cheapest way to get started. Buying booster packs and open them to make a deck, buying one of the planeswalker deck (don't think that it's the best), buy singles to make the deck, participate on a draft or participate on a prerelease? Thanks for all the good content :)
Okay, so from the end of the video from the theros pack, I'd first pick ordeal of erebos. In the born of the gods pack, I'm in between picking eater of hope or marshmist titan, but likely pick eater of hope first and pass the titan to be potentially wheeled back. Finally on the journey to nyx pack, my pick would be feast of dreams to wrap up the curve with contingent removal. I understand that going monocolors doesn't stack up that way in draft. But as the pack I crack, Ordeal of Erebos, Eater of Hope, and Feast of Dreams would be my picks(wheel pick marshmist titan). How would that slot in to the construction of the library?
quick question do the dice bags on order from your site come with any dice , if not it may be something to consider since the dice can be gotten at a low price as a grab bag on ebay. Maybe throw in a d20 or 2 6 sided for example
Bought 3 random packs yesterday, and pulled an Invocation Force of Will, sold it back to the shop for a box + 50$ credit. Pulled the new Nissa, Lilly, and Gideon. sold the Lilly back for 16. Turned 10$ into 66$, and saved myself another 16 because I didn't have to buy Nissa. Feels good man
Professor, who do you sell the cards to that actually pay enough to make up the cost of the box? Most buylists are extremely low value. Do you just know a lot players that need cards and sell to them directly?
Literally everyone, friends youtubers and all, that are around are always so lucky. Every prelease, every pack I open is filled with jank while my friends open stamped Gideons of the Trial on a dime whilst we are all budget players. I keep persuading myself what goes around comes around but after 2 1/2 years and dozens of packs I remain luckless. :(
Remember - the less money Prof pulls on these boxes, *the better it is for us, the players*. That means that cards are reasonably powered, that the set is difficult to crack and the power is well-dispersed. That means cheaper decks and more variety. Pulling "big hits" in sets means playing with cards like Copter or Gideon, which nobody really wants. Obviously it would be better if we had a couple of $2 uncommons, but maybe that message got to Wizards with how well it was done in AER.
"Proven to be"? It's been out for a week, it had zero major tournaments, let alone a Pro Tour played with it. I admit that it has many boring cards, but it also has a lot of complicated cards. I'd rather have a Standard with four Amonkhet-level blocks than Kaladesh. Unless it's fun to get excited about a "strong" cards for a month, then start crying that it's "ruining the format" for the rest of it.
Singles-wise, I'll agree. Depending on how your local hobby shop handles its prize system it can bone players. The local one here hands out boosters as prizes with the booster value determined by the price they sell the booster for. So that "$50 prize value" when the average value of a pack is under 2/3rds it's retail price means you're getting a little screwed on your prizes.
That isn't good for players. At all. If every set isn't worth shit, hardly anyone is gonna buy sealed product and the singles won't be profitable, which means goodbye LGS.
There is no proof that expected value correlates to product sold. BFZ was extremely weak, but it was still the best-selling set of all time at it's release. It is pretty obvious though, that healthy Standard environment boosts sales. Sets like Amonkhet (unless it features another Cat Combo we don't know about yet) contribute to Standard's healthiness. Kaladesh, while exciting for single-slingers, ruin it completely.
I feel like modern masters 2017 boxes were worth the cost. I was able to get 300+ on the card worth in both the 2 boxes i bought. But after dropping 400 on cards, I had to listen to the professors advice and start buying single cards. TCGplayer was where i got my single cards from
Hey prof Im new to mtg and Im just curious are there different sizes of cards from different sets or are they all standard size? Example: are 1st edition cards/commander deck cards and recent editions the same size.
They're all the same size (there are oversized plane cards and commander cards, but you don't use them in a standard deck). The only difference in card shape are Limited Edition Alpha cards which have different corners (there was a problem at the printer in the middle of the print run that resulted in the change), you won't be getting any of those unless you decide to throw a lot of money around, and with everyone using card sleeves now a days, it doesn't make a difference in actual play.
Thanks for clearing that up for me.I was concerned because I have some cards ordered from two different sellers and one set is standard while the other is a commander deck.Ill make it a priority to invest in some card sleeves as well to keep them safe.Im glad I discovered this channel and mtg itself.I used to play Yu-Gi-Oh!, but mtg seems 10x better, especially the more advanced mechanics of the game.Although saying that I think all tcgs and ccgs should be admired for their individuality.(even though mtg is the best😊)
I find this ironic. We want cards to be cheaper yet sway everyone from opening when value is low. Therefore, you will never say prices are low enough or that a set contains enough value.
The Prof says don't open packs expecting value. Use them to play limited-- where you'll actually get to use many of the cards in the packs. It's commenters that are always seen complaining about EV.
I still say it's fun to get a Bundle Pack and/or a Booster Box, to crack packs and get a huge swatch of cards to make decks with, or to share with friends. I personally buy a Bundle and Booster box for sets I absolutely love and enjoy it's story and cards for. I buy the remaining singles I want/desire and of course, buy singles for older cards that aren't being printed/reprinted. Don't forget, buying singles is a benefit solely for the secondary market, which IS good, but don't completely abandon giving some money to WOTC/MTG...gotta have a nice balance. If everyone ONLY bought singles, I feel it cause a problem for the game as a whole.
And this is why its all about luck when getting value back with these boxes. I got super lucky with mine since it had an invocation card with gidieon kefenat glorious end which added to about $80 with four cards almost made my money back
I love this set because it brings back the feeling of how it was to play Magic in 2002-03. Cards are perhaps weak/slow by today`s standards , but that is precisely how it was back in the day. ^^ (also, bought all the cards I wanted -except for the lands for 20 dollars, seems unthinkable with Kaladesh/AE and even SOI/EMN)
Prof, I will suggest something that is not the purpose of your BBG videos (probably against it). Revisit the price of the cracked boxes over time, after another set is released! just to see how the luck X finances turned over time! Great video as always! btw, love the music!
While this set is not a block buster for $ value, it is terrific to draft and make sealed decks. In my experience so far, the best chance to get value is to play well and win packs to get your "investment" back and maybe some profit from your prizes.
45 packs into amonkhet and my value based on the booster box game rating is just shy of 160... great story, poor value, don't care about the value since it's a fun set.
Okay, this is very bizarre. Professor, 90% of all the foils you received were literally the EXACT same foils I got in my box. Beyond that though, our non-foils were entirely different.
You can always tell who the money mongers of mtg are, because theyre the ones making incorrect proclamations that the set sucks because of poor financial value. Meanwhile, 60% of my EDH decks have shiny new toys, I've been inspired to build a new EDH deck, and I might just get back into standard fiven recent bannings/ideas for decks. Its almost as though *cheaper prices motivate people to buy and participate...*
I see Magic in two different lenses; financial value and play value. This set as you have pointed out has reinvigorated a few of my EDH decks, namely my Nicol Bolas EDH deck, and has driven me to create two more decks, that of Hapatra and also Temmet. I also find this limited environment to be a lot of fun. Looks good from the play value lens. However, from the financial lens, this set is super weak, only three cards of any substantial value are in this set; the planeswalkers. I do hope a few cards go up in price, like God-Pharaohs Throne, Glorious End, Glorybringer and Archfiend of Ifnir and maybe even Glory-bound Initiate and Bone Picker. But this set is weak sauce, which makes me think that WOTC was banking on the Invocations to sell this product.
Definitely have to agree with the EDH comments. I've got a Nekusar the Mindrazer deck that's going to be completely rebuilt for Cycling to alter the game flow and zombie tribal for a legitimate battlefield presence. On top of that I cracked a foil Hapatra and a Vizier of the Menagerie leading to me starting to build my first Golgari deck of ANY format. My main thought through most of this was "How the hell is that card THAT CHEAP?". But I guess for a lot of people if it's not making their uber decks even more uber then it's just trash.
Jvalex I think part of it is that the core mechanics of Amonkhet don't flow on from Kaladesh. You can't really bolt the former onto the later, you need to start at Amonkhet and build out from there.
"Buy the singles you want to play". "Buy the singles the meta wants you to play" Limited is still the best but you still can play limited constructed, buy a define number of packs and build whatever you can.

Warlord MacIlvernock i second this
I wholeheartedly agree
Yes!

I really wish mtg youtubers would do this. I love sealed format, it is so fun. Filming that would be harder than pack opening, but much more rewarding.
Disappointed...The Professor was not in the Bathroom Shaving at the beginning simliar to Modern Masters :P
Alpha Investments I think he went with no pants this time...
Johnan. He had pants at the beginning but lost them when he found out he ended up with $62.
happy james duckbutt chillcot wasnt in this video
Alpha Investments You should have picked the box for him.
Next time let him use the green screen bro !

Current... none. Just a few key cards have value. Not sure when you played, but the net decks depict the value now.
I started in amonkhet so there's so much nostalgia for me here

If you think about it, 5 mythics is probably way above the average box. And still that result.

I just wanted say I enjoy every video and I have learned so much because of u so keep it up lol
I just opened my first pack of Amonkhet and pulled Liliana while watching this. I'm sure you gave me good luck prof!
I like the lil bit there at the end I love theros block
I like these, i'd like to see more of these!
should put all of these in a "booster box game" playlist, or am i blind? i didn't see one.
You should add a counter indicating which pack you're currently on out of 36 and maybe also an average value per pack that updates as you open each pack (using the same rules of not counting any cards under $2).
My friend was at a amonkhet draft last night and opened (and of course drafted) two Gideons but didn't play white!
If people don't buy booster packs though, then how will cards on the secondary market get there? This entire channel is really enjoyable... at 1.25 speed
It's funny, I was just thinking "Wonder when prof is going to play the Amonkhet Booster Box Game?"
You are the man professor this video made my day.
One of my favorite parts about new sets coming out is just watching these videos prove your point. People who buy boxes to open are throwing money down the toilet for the sake of a quick high from opening the packs. Also, for some reason I've grown unexpectedly fond of the BBG music.

Knew what was going to happen when the music came in. He does love that tune for disappointments,
Hey, I really like your mtg content! Is there anymore office hours in the works i really enjoy watching them

wow I didn't know Liliana Deaths Majesty was so valuable! I pulled it from my 4th ever MTG pack.
i got the same foil in my box. super pretty
I like this new format which only shows the cards that are worth money
Bought 3 random packs yesterday, and pulled an Invocation Force of Will, sold it back to the shop for a box + 50$ credit. Pulled the new Nissa, Lilly, and Gideon. sold the Lilly back for 16. Turned 10$ into 66$, and saved myself another 16 because I didn't have to buy Nissa. Feels good man
Wow that store got ripped on the force of will
Hey prof, what do you think of using or making a system so we can see the current value of cards worth 2 dollars or more.
Do you have any videos that go over how to brew decks that match up well against the current meta?
I really like this set great cards and cheap as chips great for someone who buys the singles online
when the booster box game video, isnt longer than 10 minutes we can always assume we didnt make it very far. ill watch anyways ;)
It would be cool to see your draft hauls if you play draft.
oh that's my new favorite prof vest
Professor, who do you sell the cards to that actually pay enough to make up the cost of the box? Most buylists are extremely low value. Do you just know a lot players that need cards and sell to them directly?
am I the only one who has a special face-dance for the booster box game music?
Omg Thero's so many memories
I bought an Amonkhet fat pack yesterday and pulled foiled Rhonas. I almost peed myself. The god card I wanted, in foil.
God I miss Theros...
well that answers my question as to if I should buy a box.
Thats right Prof, Boosters are for Draft. Or sealed I might ad.
Obviously it would be better if we had a couple of $2 uncommons, but maybe that message got to Wizards with how well it was done in AER.
or that the set is weak (as Amonkhet has proven to be) and that even the mythics are boring, I mean come on, this cycle of gods is just boring.
Kaladesh, while exciting for single-slingers, ruin it completely.
prof, is worth to buy a LEGENDARY BATTLE DECKS HO-OH/LUGIA?
guru lands playmat. NOICE ONE, BRUVA.
Good morning Professor!!
It's commenters that are always seen complaining about EV.
wow prof is so close to more subs then the main Mtg UA-cam channel LOL
I landed a secret rare which is field blower in the new pokemon boosters. The card is worth $30-$40 right? I'm not too sure
I got super lucky with mine since it had an invocation card with gidieon kefenat glorious end which added to about $80 with four cards almost made my money back
Professor, please do some "Is it worth it" videos for Amonkhet products.
According to the market and depending on the web page can be true for the price of some cards you show, but not all cards have the price you show.
Keep in mind the prices are for when he recorded.
Any one will agree to this in the way give information i liked
I love the music...
While this set is not a block buster for $ value, it is terrific to draft and make sealed decks. In my experience so far, the best chance to get value is to play well and win packs to get your "investment" back and maybe some profit from your prizes.
I really enjoy drafting this set more than anything if i need cards i just buy singles instead of wasting money on a whole box.
and i am not saying that the Prof is wasting money just the opposite
45 packs into amonkhet and my value based on the booster box game rating is just shy of 160... great story, poor value, don't care about the value since it's a fun set.
Well, that wasn't horrible. I expected the outcome to be approximately equal to the shipping costs.
that was actually a very good amonkhet pack
I played at my local store and bought three of ahmonkhet packs and I got like 2 mythics and one legendary artifact
Okay, this is very bizarre. Professor, 90% of all the foils you received were literally the EXACT same foils I got in my box. Beyond that though, our non-foils were entirely different.
lets not forget that pulling one invocation easily puts you close to what you paid
I imagine it would be hard to break the 100 mark without a lottery card or a premium foil.
TFW you don't even wait for Prof to even *start* filming for the booster box game and you've already bought a box...
Nice Playmat. :3
Damn Straight.
I totally agree! This set has so much great stuff for EDH, and its all so cheap.
"Buy the singles the meta wants you to play"
Limited is still the best but you still can play limited constructed, buy a define number of packs and build whatever you can.
Is that guru island playmat? where can i get one?
I'm calling it, 2 boxes, haven't seen the video yet
Dang It
Ah so you managed to watch 8 minutes of footage in a minute? That is a skill good sir!
gamecentral79 he can Actually See how Long the Video goes
im guessing 1 box cause alot of people said sales of these boxes are low due to low pricing of singles.
lol, i pulled all three plainswalkers our of mine!
Nice UA-cam algorithm at the end there Professor
Gotta get to 10 minutes, sucka.
What is the art from on that mat, I know it's a land art but I can't remember what they are called please help!
is the cycling duel lands for every color combination or just allied colors?
Noah Golden allied only thus far
Glorybringer foil is $11, normal is tops $6.50
AAAArgh you upload this 5 minutes after Budget MTG decks new commander deck. First world problems.
Nice idea not sure y I just got notified now may 6th?????
hello! I thought that I could earn money selling some magic cards...so what is the best way to get money with magic?
When will you be in the new office?
