  • Settling tanks belong in every aquaponics system. They are very simple to make and follow a few basic parameters explained in this video.

Mine is more educational but we still produce a lot. Manage pests, check things every day, keep it clean

Can I learn more about your settling tank? I am attempting to use it on my RAS (Recirculating Aquaculture System)

Where did you get the cone bottom tanks?

Well you will need some figures to design a good one: water in a settling tank should stay there for at least 30 minutes. Research has shown that after 30 min. about 80% of the suspended solids (SS) are collected in the bottom cone. So if you are pumping 5 m3/h your settling tank should be about 2.5 m3. Thats the disadvantage of settlings tanks - they need a lot of space. Thats why we are using drumfilters in commercial fish farms (RAS). But if you are using a deep water culture you are having a long settling tank ;-). But remember we want the liquid nutrients from the fish waste not the solids. So design your system in such a way that you can always remove this unwanted sludge otherwise you will run into problems.
