I’m very happy your design worked out. When building my system I followed your design with a 14 gallon container about the same time you were building yours. I tried with the weirs but found out they were not needed in my situation. I didn’t realize your center down pipe went into the tank that far. I’ll have to try and extend mine. Thank you
Hi Rob. You are my hero when it comes to Aquaponics. Years ago I stumbled over your Channel because I was looking for Ideas building a Geo-Dome. Then I saw your approach to Aquaponics and finally I build my own System. The Geo-Dome had to wait is still in the Line... :-)). Aquaponic is great, so get up everybody, come on and start building your System. It's rewarding! And back to Rob: you have always great ideas and are willing to Try & Error things out. Would painting everything black to cut light transfer help to reduce the bio-slime or algae? Or wrap everything including pipes with black plastic, maybe? I understand maintenance is involved in everything we use but if we can reduce the necessity, it helps.

I'm a total newbee, but I hear you saying that light getting into the tank is basically the cause of the algae growth. Why not wrap the tank with something like aluminum foil to block the light? Enjoying your channel and looking forward to your next video.
It's possible. Usually when you cover something like this, people hit it and break it and it just becomes a maintenance problem. It's also very difficult to paint PE plastics.
If someone had a choice between blue or green tanks would green be a better choice?

I was just thinking about the light frequency absorption of algae and if there would be any benefit of using something green, which would block out all other light frequencies except for green which algae would not absorb very well and still allow fish visual navigation? It's just something I've been curious about for a while now.

is it possible that your vertical tube is a bit too long? I saw an accumulation of dirt on the sloping wall as if there is too much water flow to let it sink down to the lowest part. I think this is solved when you shorten the vertical tube about 30cm.
HaHa! I was hoping no one would notice that. Good catch. Yes, I need to shorten the stilling well a little bit. For the most part, the fish knock it back down. I've noticed if I change the flow rate faster or slower, the ring will eventually expand and contract since the velocity changes at that spot.
Your solids separator filters are what I dream about having lol. Great video, thanks!

I like your videos. I am wondering why you do not put algae eating fish in the settling tanks instead of the Koi, or even in addition to the Koi.
They would eat most of that growth, and easily control it also adding those nutrients back to your system.

@@Bigelowbrook What species are you raising? I saw trout in some of the videos, but others in other videos. If tilapia, your water should be the right temperature.

Hillstream loach species are frequently sold as algae eaters for coldwater or temperate tanks. ... One of the common fish sold as a “good algae eater” is Pterygoplichthys pardalis, aka the “Common Pleco”. It will eat algae nicely, but it will also grow to around 45cm/18″, not counting the tailfin.

thanks for the info. I looked up the info and the the site says the Hillstream needs to be above 65F. Our currently water temp is barely 60F. Plus they need a high flow rate (I"m assuming so they get enough O2 without the need to swim a lot).
@@Bigelowbrook I was hoping to be able to help. I admittedly did only a cursory search. I will get back to it at some point as I think we can find a suitable species.
My system has goldfish, swordtail mollies, a few corydoras, tetras, & some random cichlid species. My location allows our water temperature to be in range for them without heating, so it works out well.
I am planning to add some algae eaters as well as I over-looked the need when I set up.
could you use mystery snails or something to keep the algae down?
Thank you for the video. I believe if you used a UV Sterilizer, the algae problem will disappear. Some huge aquaponic farms are using it.

For some reason, I don't remember that center pipe being that long. Oddly enough, I've been hoping for that update on the mineralization tank. I'm hoping to get my stuff up this summer & have based my radial flow on what both you & Rob Bob down in Austraia did. Similar to your design, however in contrast, my input will be coming from the bottom of the barrel, requiring the barrel to be at the same level of the waterline in the IBC. I will be shooting video (I'm no "creator" by any means) but I would appreciate it if I could get some brutally honest insight when i put it up.

Probably a bad idea as crayfish reproduce profusely (some asexually) & would get into the main tanks to eat the fish. A better solution would be chinese algae eaters or plecastamous & corydoras.
In Kenya aquaponics is not in use and am thinking of getting into it. The Q am debating is weather plywood tanks are cheaper than pvc tarpaulin coated tanks. Any advice

I have cray fish in my radial flow settler and they clean it for me. I also have them in my growbeds and fish tank. They eat the fry so I don't need to sex reverse my fish.
You know your water is clean when it turns green.

Does he realize the rusting metal is harming the fish? Metal and fish are a no no.
Perhaps in higher concentrations but this amount is insignificant compared to the rest of the system. If you have contradicting information, please post the scientific research stating otherwise. Thanks!

I feel bad for this nice fellow... because of nonsense from scientifically illiterate mommy blogs about synthetic fertilizers they had him believe it's somehow bad for the health, and he shelled out tens of thousands of dollars for an aquaponic system where he doesn't even eat the fish... where the alternative would have been a 10-20$ full scope fertilizer that would last him for a whole season...
Also, in a previous video he was adding "synthetic iron" and maybe some potassium too, maybe it tells you all something...
The koi are sold to the ornamental pond folks and produce more profit than any kind of fish that would be used for food. I don't do it, but some people also sell the fish waste as a composting tea. As for the rest of the nutrients, I could care less about said "mommy blogs" and I can provide supplemental nutrients and minerals as needed instead of just dumping in some type of fertilizer. Bulk bags of particular minerals are far cheaper than buying everything in solution. Most proper hydroponic solutions tend to be expensive and add salts resulting in water needing to be purged from the system. There are a few of my videos out there where you may see a bag of 10-10-10 in the background which is used to supplement the system on occasion, so please don't discount my growing practices based on a couple of videos. But the way I found your channel like a year ago was through Kirsten Dirksen, and there you mentioned something about "chemical fertilizers" having petroleum extracts or something, even though it basic high school chemistry is enough to discredit that.
Uninformed people (in general, I don't mean you of course!) tend to "humanize" what they're not familiar with; beef cattle who wouldn't not exist otherwise feeling existential crisis for being beef cattle, plant roots are like mouths that take whatever you give them, etc..
At the end the nutrients have to be broken down, in a salt form identical to the synthetic fertilizers (unless your chelating with humic acid or the like, but you get my point). So what I was saying is that in my opinion it is just adding unnecessary and costly steps.
Taste has nothing to do with the type of grow either, but rather potassium and sulfur levels, and in case of tomatoes etc, water level. tomato grown for sauces is left to dry out in the fields before harvest for exactly that.
I personally prefer the more control approach, but that is just my personal preference (I come from indoor gardening). I have no doubt in terms of growing experience you have way way more experience and knowledge than me .
