In the ms-01 model I was disappointed with the poorly thought-out cooling system, the processor was cooled well, but the SSD drives were a problem, now I see in the a1 the shortcoming was corrected, but a more powerful CPU was installed and the cooling is clearly not enough, the lower SSDs will also be poorly cooled (( in the ms-01, even in a small space, but still PSI, different versions of m2, U2 have height restrictions ((
ETA Prime, anyway you can test to see if the 7800x3D or 7900 chips are supported? Supposedly they are but nobody seems to have this model yet, Minisforum hasn't answered my questions either. Its the only thing holding me back from buying this.
I would think the 65w 7900 non X would work if you running a eGPU constantly but even without it you can technically still stream or do basic stuff with the RDNA 2.0 that's built into CPU. Don't know if you can run the 7800x3D at 65w using the minisforum bios.
It would be nice to test the editing capabilities of these mini pc's too....for viewers like me who want a small form factor pc for remote work and editing.
I'm little bit tired of those "tests" with fsr/dlss. They are not representative, moreover they are not showing the real performance, they are relies on software implementation which might change. @@stewiebrown1520 the tests with fsr and dlss show real world performance... What you're suggesting would gimp results unnecessarily. Any version changes of FSR have just made it better. Your complaint doesn't make sense for benchmarking modern computer performance in games.
agreed.... I'd buy this PC for the living room for a media and mid gaming / game stream endpoint from main rig and opt for the best internal GPU I could squeeze in even if it meant cutting a hole in the case to fit a 2 slot.

It's probably caped for only 65W TDP AM5 processors. So, no 7800X3D won't work, as it's 120W. But you can instead go with the non-X variants like 7600, 7700 & 7900, and run an oculink gpu. And if MinisForums provides BIOS update, then maybe even upcoming 9600X & 9700X (both have 65W TDP).
Anyone know if the USB4 port will support Thunderbolt 3 devices? Seems like the USB4 spec allows for Thunderbolt support, but depends on whether or not the manufacturer actually implements it?
There are already several videos from China (in full chinese ofc) that state this can take 1ccd CPU's up to 65W or Dual CCD CPU's up to 100w. Can you confirm this??? This would be a monster with a 7950x @ 100w or a 9950x @ 100w (with some bios update). For the GPU side, (if you need something more powerfull than the AMD 610m the desktop cpus bring) do not forget this has both Occulink and USB 4.... Their own oculink dock is pretty cheap @ 90€... just throw in some old gpu in and voila, you have a MONSTER 16 core 32 Threads gaming machine
Do you know of a good looking, compact and affordable Oculink dock suitable for the A2000 Low Profile. The One Dock V2 and the Ogre250 look great but they are small production and very high price.
In theory it should be able to run a 7950x but the power supply and the motherboard VRM is something that may overheat if the CPU power go beyond 100W. And there is also the possibility of some UEFI locks imposed my minisforum.
@@RipHunter-l7x So with Oculink, the external gpu is effectively detected as native PCIE at system boot? Mainly concerned about stability/compatibility with Linux. Oculink is completely foreign to me.
To be honest I kinda disappointed with MS-A1 compared with MS-01 I/O which have HHHL X8 PCIe slot and dual 10G SFP+. In my opinion I know OcuLink might have more flexibility with more expansion device but it will add more space for a product people will get for maximized their limited space.
I was a little bit interested in this until I found out it doesn't have any other way to connect a GPU then that Oculink. Absolutely wasted potential. You would think that because the Intel variant had PCIe and was released way before this that this one too would have a PCIe slot but nope. AMD got cucked once again... Can you imagine if you could have put 7800X3D + RTX A2000 / RTX 4060 in this? And what the hell is that RAM speed support??? 5200MT/s. With 8700G? With this price tag? What a bad product. What were they thinking with this one? Anyone who is interested in this should check out ASrock Deskmini X600 before they buy this. That one is way cheaper, supports 6400MT/s RAM and is arguably from a more reputable company.
@@TerranigmaQuintet Well that's debatable. The 7800X3D can MAYBE work. Is there a hard limit on CPU power consumption? Or is there an actual BIOS lock preventing it from working at all? Because if it's just a power consumption limit then just undervolt, underclock etc. and it should be fine. The ASrock Desmini X600 is also said to only support 65W TDP CPUs but the 7800X3D works on that board.

@@hydraxxorion538 The reason is the fallacious argument of appeal to authority for believing that TDP nonsense and the reality is that for as long the CPU VRM on the motherboard won't overheat and the PSU can handle the power you can give that AM5 socket as many watts as you like.
@@TerranigmaQuintet No,the motherboard can handle 100W easily and probably 120w but at that point the temperature of the VRM MOSFETs needs to be carefully monitored. Most devices can handle way more power than advertised and all the power limits are very conservative because the manufacturer don't know in what environment you are going to use it so they don't want the users on a very hot climate to have issues that can cause to many RMA request.
I don't know if anyone is like me about this, but my lord man. This PC is rounding out at about $1000. PC gaming will never be widely adopted with the pricing structure for performance. My opinion.

That's a bummer that this is NOTHING like the Intel version. It lacks the dual 10 GbE SFP+ ports and it also doesn't have the PCIe slot open and available as well. What a shame. If this had the same feature set as the MS-01, but just using the AMD processor as the base rather than the Intel, then it would've been a compelling product, but absent of those features, and I don't want to deal with the P-core/E-core business of Intel CPUs (and I think that it is not a smart purchasing decision to buy a CPU, and then castrate its performance by shutting off the E-cores) = still no buy from me (yet). @@habs798693 it has Radeon graphics which isn't the same. But I am planning to use mine as a hypervisor server. The only hardcore GPU load I have is on a dedicated Intel 11000t igpu
All Ryzen CPUs come with RDNA 2.0 so you can still do basic stuff like streaming Netflix, web browsing and email checking. You would have to use a eGPU all the time for gaming but I would love to see the see the geek bench specs on it.
Mine's on its way. Putting in 48GB of (24GB x 2, dual channel) RAM and a 4TB SSD. Mid-August I'll be ordering a Ryzen 9 9900X and seeing how that does. The new iGPU will be more powerful than my Radeon Pro 5500 XT 8GB, so I'm looking forward to it. Bazzite will be what I use.
48GB is overpriced - you can get 64GB (2x32GB) for practically the same price.
@@absurdalny Not in Canada.
Is it compatible with the new 9000 series ?
@@anks0203 It is (though only up to 9700X due to power usage). I ended up using an 8700G for the iGPU.
@@vidagogo9829oh cool...Thanks for replying ... Are using eGPU or making do with the iGPU?
Unfortunately, there is no shipping to my country...
In the ms-01 model I was disappointed with the poorly thought-out cooling system, the processor was cooled well, but the SSD drives were a problem, now I see in the a1 the shortcoming was corrected, but a more powerful CPU was installed and the cooling is clearly not enough, the lower SSDs will also be poorly cooled ((
in the ms-01, even in a small space, but still PSI, different versions of m2, U2 have height restrictions ((
Please test without frame generation - benchmarking without it allows us to know the base performance
It would be nice to test the editing capabilities of these mini pc's too....for viewers like me who want a small form factor pc for remote work and editing.
should be good i dont see why not. is 8 cores 16 thread which is a lot.
I'm little bit tired of those "tests" with fsr/dlss. They are not representative, moreover they are not showing the real performance, they are relies on software implementation which might change. I kinda get it, you need to show "good" side of this product, but there is should be at least tests with raw performance. otherwise it's just propaganda
@@stewiebrown1520 the tests with fsr and dlss show real world performance... What you're suggesting would gimp results unnecessarily. Any version changes of FSR have just made it better. Your complaint doesn't make sense for benchmarking modern computer performance in games.
agreed.... IMO higher frame rate 1080 with FSR frame gen is not appealing compared to 1440 60 FPS lock no input lag.. upscale is fine but a focus on native gaming and a mix of upscale with a little frame gen sprinkle would be better video rather than click farm / sponsor shill. I'd buy this PC for the living room for a media and mid gaming / game stream endpoint from main rig and opt for the best internal GPU I could squeeze in even if it meant cutting a hole in the case to fit a 2 slot.
With the current cpu options, is this really better for gaming than a mini with one of the 780M GPUs? Instead, with 4 nvme slots and two ethernet jacks, I see this as a good home server option. Get the barebones and an 8500G and you’ve got a great platform.
"Great platform" But very unreliable.
@@MrPrometheusUK Why do you say that?
the lack of sfp+ is really a deal breaker for me.
how's the fan noise and temperature on these?
Is the oculink port on the CPU lanes or chipset lanes?
Can you use the ROG Ally X by using an EGPU with VR headset plugged in because I want to know what kind of possibility can you use as your own portable ability with VR connected to a handheld with external graphic card because a lot of people might be interested because I wanna know because I could test my own way, but I wanna know if you because you’re the only person you can test it
What is the best mini pc atm?
if i see the DC 19v round shape connector charger - the whole unit already old design and outdated. doesnt matter the capabilities. because modern items all already come out with USBC 4.0\T4 240w compatible
I just got the ASRock DeskMini X600.... does what i need
Does it support Epyc 4004 chips and/or ECC?
Can you put the numbers up for the Ally X and onexgpu?
I am curious if a gpu attached via occulink will work under linux.
I liek the desktop cpu in mini pcs also apprciate a dedicated nvidia or amd gpu chip with that size.
Would love to see how it handles fedora
This is AM5, will it support AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D?
no
Yes it does lmao
can you try with linux I think it would be great for gaming. I am looking for a mini PC as a first PC to start gaming and maybe steaming. All I have right now is my steam deck and I am just looking to something to go along side it and be great by its self and I think this would be good start.
Hi, could you do a test with this mini pc and another mini pc featuring the 7945hx cpu paired with an RTX 4090 to see the results? I always wondered how would an RTX 4090 with oculink performance loss would be when tested on the most powerful mini pc CPUs. Thanks in advance
Really anything over like a 4070 would be a complete waste as an eGPU atm
@@notbrokebrolt6281you would be surprised. A 4090 RTX with oculink would before about only a 10% less than in a full pci express x16 slot
@@notbrokebrolt6281 The mad scientist electronics hacker ascetic for some. Like a watch the size of a hockey puck on your wrist.

Yes! Please make a linux video on this! Such a good spec hardware to waste running windows...
could you drop an 7800x3d, and always use the oculink gpu attached for display?
It's probably caped for only 65W TDP AM5 processors. So, no 7800X3D won't work, as it's 120W.
But you can instead go with the non-X variants like 7600, 7700 & 7900, and run an oculink gpu.
And if MinisForums provides BIOS update, then maybe even upcoming 9600X & 9700X (both have 65W TDP).
The 7700 non X would work or the 7900 but unless you are gonna use the eGPU for more than gaming, I would just stick with what's in it
Why is the RAM speed gimped ?
Anyone know if the USB4 port will support Thunderbolt 3 devices? Seems like the USB4 spec allows for Thunderbolt support, but depends on whether or not the manufacturer actually implements it?
so m.2 only support single side ssd?
Why bother if there is atomman with 7600
The oculink port is pcie4.0x4 or x8?
Usually 4x, have not seen any 8x yet
Look into the minisforum DEG1? Has occulink port on the side
@@tomh1556 The Minisforum DEG1 takes up an enormous amount of desk space. It has a larger footprint than a Mini ITX.
The Minisforum DEG1 is kind of huge. It has a footprint as big as a Mini ITX.
Of course we want the Linux test on this machine, right?
Can this run say an AMD Ryzen 7900... I'm just saying a 12-core mini PC would be pretty boss for a UNRAID server
In theory it should be able to run a 7950x but the power supply and the motherboard VRM is something that may overheat if the CPU power go beyond 100W. And there is also the possibility of some UEFI locks imposed my minisforum.
This can work for music production right?
why not, music production uses cpu and ram more than video)
Ok I'm sure this has been addressed and I missed it, but what happened to the intro?
Wow I didn't know the MS are selling PC now..
lets see linux bazzite!
I'd like to see Linux and if it has any issues with Oculink.
Is just PCIe over a wire so what issues are you talking about?
It only supports CPUs up to 65 watt tdp, so no 7800x3d.
@@Jantcha Exactly, Most people seem to be unaware (either deliberately in bad faith or involuntarily) that all AMD "desktop" CPUs can operate in "65W ECO-Mode" even the Ryzen 9 7950X and 7950X3D.
I started doing PC gaming with a steam deck and can't believe you can go get a game console (PS5 or Series x) that has no problem running modern games for less than half of the price. PC gaming will never be widely adopted with the pricing structure for performance. My opinion.
I'm surprised that he says nothing about ryzen 7900x and 7950x that will work in this setup?
I would think because they are not 65w CPUs and Minisforum has its own bios so you probably can't change the wattage to 65w like in the Windows bios unless there is some third party software to do it

'Tis a pity.
