I remember before the second season, there was a group on the internet that only allowed people who were "Ricks" to join. Somehow their high IQ managed to miss that Rick criticized the other Ricks for forming their own stupid club. I always considered that to be the first step this fanbase took downhill.

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Rick and Morty. The humor is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also Rick's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation - his personal philosophy draws heavily fromNarodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realize that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Rick and Morty truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Rick's existencial catchphrase "Wubba Lubba Dub Dub," which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Dan Harmon's genius unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools... how I pity them. 😂 And yes by the way, I DO have a Rick and Morty tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies' eyes only- And even they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand.

Even if it was on purpose that was still extremely disrespectful to the employees who were most likely already stressed from the situation and now they have to worry about some asshole jumping on top of the counter and hope he doesn’t accidentally damage the register or anything else, or fall off and cause a whole other problem for them to deal with.
The funniest thing is it turned out Rick was lying about being motivated by the szechuan sauce (predictably because it was obviously a joke that he was being motivated by something so stupid) so all the people who did go nuts for this sauce IRL show that despite their claims to get the show more than most people, they actually got it less than most people.

I've found that Rick and Morty suffers from some of the same issues as Bojack Horseman. people related to the toxic character on the wrong way, and thought it made them special. instead of taking it as a chance for self reflection and wondering why the related to them so heavily and how it impacted their lives and the lives of people around them, they used it as validation.
I'll admit it, I got a Rick and Morty tattoo after the first season. it's subtle, and has a meaning closer to me than just the show itself. I'm glad I chose to make it something not obviously from the show, removals are expensive and painful!

@@spacesoarer3627 Bojack has a lot more depth, and isn’t as crass, which is why I prefer it. I still really enjoy R&M, but it’s deep moments still don’t cut as deep (or last as long) as Bojack.
The show IS very intelligent, just not in the way these people seem to think it is. The show has intelligent STORY TELLING, the way Rick and Morty has set up it's characters and how they all interact is the real genius here, and that's why people love it, not because they care about string theory or theory of relativity; There's literally an alien with elbow titties in one episode, this show isn't that serious.
Storytelling is a Great Concept through Creativity&Imagination with Understanding,Knowledge,Reasoning to form an Idea. We Humans Love Stories
And we are the Best at Telling those Stories

The real issue is that people adopted the entire show into meme culture ruining it. They didnt take a single joke or character and turn it into a meme they memed the entire show. This brought forward the cringe meme patrol out. What you see from fans is a TINY minority but because they are part of cringe meme culture they cant help but embarass themselves and anything else once they get a hold of anything popular. I remember trying the sauce back around 2018 only to be a disappointing experience, I could only think of how fans hyped up the sauce. It was good sauce just not as good as it seemed in the show and how the fans hyped it up, unfortunately I worked with Rick and Morty fanboy and the guy straight up told me it's not the same recipe that they used in the original sauce and that's why it wasn't that good. The man got super defensive over a sauce no one remembered and only knew about it once the show came out. My friend is right a lot fans that act like that think they are Ricks but really they are Jerrys.
I didnt realize ppl were actually expecting this sauce to taste good. It's from McDonald's, how good could it be? It's just high fructose corn syrup. I think the point of sezuchan sauce was to illustrate arbitrariness. I don't think R&M actually meant it was tasty.

I only found out that it had this bad reputation when I recommended the show to my brother who hadn’t seen it and he already had this idea that it was some stupid, immature show for overgrown children! As a fan, I think Rick and Morty fans have earned the title and many are proud of it. Many of these trolls are people with no identity looking for community. Like the people who are all of a sudden in to politics and freedom only so they can join a club, militia, or march. Bored, ignored, and no group to call their own.
The fans even shamed one of the creators because he apologized for getting drunk and harassing co-workers. It's a real hive mind situation. They even called the show woke for not wanting to be sexist in the writer's room.

I know emp lemon already pointed this out, but rick and morty was at its creative endpoint when they decided that rick was an immortal god that would win every scenario. There's no peril or conflict anymore in the show. All the suspense has been done away with and it feels like nothing matters

However if I think of it from the writer's perspective, I think it's to point out that his nihilism is in direct, active conflict with the fact he actually does care about his family, as Morty graciously and obnoxiously points out. There's no risk to Rick. Absolutely. None. Buuut, there is to everyone else around him, including Jerry. Its fun to make Rick have feelings once in a while because everyone else is in some sort of peril. 😆 Bonus: Rick even has moments of self awareness and feels guilty, he acknowledges Jerry is right - he isn't actually an idiot - and Rick feels *_guilt_* for being the *_reason_* for his family's near death experiences, being galactic felons, and so much more.

I was late to the R&M game. I thought it was peak cringe because of the fan base. After watching the show, I realized just how clueless most of those edge lords were. They never realized that the show they loved was mocking them. That bit of meta spice made me enjoy the show more and overcome the preconceptions I had.

I dont really understand how Rick and morty is subtle in its jokes or how you would need to be even slightly smart to understand it. I've been watching it since season 1, nothing about this show is subtle. Most of the jokes are over the top, stupid in your face comedy and can be raunchy and even edgy at times, which is exactly why I liked it in the first place. It's just way out and goofy, where people got this idea that it was "smart people humor" is beyond me. This is a comedic adult cartoon based around science fiction, it isn't rooted in reality in the slightest.
My guess is that it started as a joke, but later down the line some people began to say it unironically.

I think it's also got this problem where it was almost immediately billed as The Smartest Show on Television. In reality, it's largely improvised and at least 40% fart jokes. I love Rick and Morty, and I love a good fart joke. It's just that three year olds understand fart humor. I guess it just goes to show you, that show has something for everyone, whether you're a narcissist on the internet, the kind of parent who lets your three year old watch Rick and Morty, or any other type of person, really. It's like CJ the X said, you don't have to be a genius to get it, you do have to be a little obnoxious to actively dislike it.
I'd also like to point out, backing out of the room slowly here, there are a lot of people who consider themselves smart for liking Rick and Morty who are also trying to wrap their brains around the season 5 finale months later.

At the height of my fandom, I actually walked to my local McDonald’s for the seschuan sauce. When I got there, saw it was crowded, snd found out the sauce was sold out. I talked to some fans who said they were gonna go to another McDonald’s to try and get some. Right there, I decided it was a fun joke, but I’m not gonna go even more out of my way to most likely just be disappointed. I just said “oh that’s unfortunate” and got some shake shack lol

I never”watched” but i seen a few episodes here and there and i say the young fans, Supreme and the stoner culture ruined the image for rick and morty seeing mall stores and kiosks with milked merch of pickle rick and other gags from the show and trippy posters/art made me feel like i knew who the target audience is, but watching this gives some clarity on what I thought the show and its fandom
The merch at places like spencer's definitely painted an initial image for me as well. It took giving the show a chance (and skipping through some of the first season) to change that for me.

"The writing is smart and deep." I tuned out as soon as you said that LOL. Simply saying "God isn't real, we're meaningless" is about as deep as a puddle. Not saying I disagree with the sentiment, but the argument becomes "and...?" As in "and what does that have to do with anything?" As in "what NEW idea does that bring to the table?" It just seems like the kind of shit a 14 year old me would post on a Facebook comment about atheism. And as for smart? Well. It's a cartoon that makes offhand references to "abstract physics" but it once again doesn't do much. It's about as smartly written as the big bang theory ffs. Throwing "quantum" into every other sentence doesn't make the writing smart. Nor does the simple fact that it is science fiction make it "sophisticated" or "smart". Credit where credit is due: it's a show that makes some people laugh. That should be enough. Now quit trying to justify liking a show. If you like it, you like it. Not 'cause it's smart and you're smart by extension.... 'cause if that's how you feel then that is one SAD life.

It's smart in the same way the Simpsons golden years were smart, or in the way that South Park's best episodes are smart, or in the way that Scrubs was smart, as well as any number of shows that say nothing about physics or whatever. And have you seen the Big Bang Theory? It is not smart at all, it's lazy and plays to bad tropes and stereotypes.
I agree with your sentiment that one should not have to justify liking something, but throwing words together that have to do with perceived definitions of intelligence is not what makes shows smart. What makes them smart is the way it's done. Rick and Morty is objectively a smart show.

south park is smart because it made nifty satire of contemporary issues and did so with clever setups.
Simpsons was smart because it dealt with serious topics through a comedic lens, picking apart and making fun of american life.
Scrubs helped people cope with mortality and extremely heavy and often depressing topics.
Rick and Morty is just funny, and even that has become more of a hit and miss as time has gone on. reminding us that "rick is totes depressed" doesnt change that.

I know it is a minor amount of fans because I and my friends who all watch R&M have never commented about it online or ever tried that sauce. But when you hear people turned out in droves to get it, you imagine that must have been the entire fan base. A small amount of a massive fan base is still a lot of people.

I actually remember hearing about R&M years before I actually watched it through it's memes. Pickle Rick, "you need a high IQ" and Sczechuan (?) Sauce were all I knew about it at the time and it kinda kept me away, as well as the fact that I just never cared to watch it. But then I finally caved in and decided to watch it a few years ago, and I'm so glad I did. I absolutely love and adore the show, that it kinda became my comfort show in a weird way. Rick became my favorite character and in turn also a weird comfort character as well. While fandoms can suck, sometimes their craziness gets so out there it lets other people find pieces of media they end up loving they probably wouldn't have found out otherwise.
On my flights two and from Germany I met two people who were not only really nice but fans of Rick and Morty. One was a flight attendant and the other was just someone sitting next to me. These both happened on separate occasions.
What linked us together was the enjoyment of a piece of media.

This isn’t a R&M fans issue. It’s an internet issue. These stunts are probably on the upper end of the nonsense it creates, but the sexism, the supposed moral high ground these people have; it’s present in nearly every overzealous fanbase of any property. The bigger it is, the worse it will be.
"High IQ" is a cringe and incorrect way to put it, but Futurama and The Simpsons absolutely have some very nerdy/academic jokes that are missed by most people.
Obviously you don't have to get every single joke to "understand" a comedy as a whole. But when you do miss a joke, you often won't even know you missed it.

I never understood why people labelled Rick and Morty as a show for "Highly Intellectuals". I'm a Physicist myself and to be honest the show only repeats sci fi paradoxes. They just make a paradox loop every now and then which makes it seem complex. They use the philosophy part cleverly though. I still enjoy the show very much for what it is, but the self proclaimed intellectuals are nothing but what actuall scientists and academicians call street science people.

I liked the show since it came out. I'm an auntie in age though so... maybe I just know not to admire Rick. I also now IQ testing is a sham. You have to be emotional mature enough to not inflate yourself over shortcomings or devalue others for their strengths. Kids are not supposed to be super mature, although they should be growing. Dan's comment is apt.

Honestly this can happen with any good show. I remember it happening with futurama and Steven universe both shows I enjoyed. Maybe Steven universe a little less but it was fine. People get to obsessed with these shows and unfortunately can either prevent people rlfrom ever watching it or even make things so bad that some fans don't want to be associated with the fan base so they stop watching

I was in 7th grade when I started watching Rick and Morty. I was immediately obsessed with it, I’m a huge sci fi nerd and loved the Futurama-esque world of the show. The first two seasons were amazing and at that point the fanbase was fairly small? Like the show hadn’t quite hit mainstream yet. God, what a time.
Nowadays I rarely think about the show. I don’t think I even finished season 5, it was just so mediocre. I definitely think the bigger audience around season three fucked with the crew working on the show, they simply were not sure how to replicate the greatness of the first two seasons. That and amount of change in the writer’s room.

I think the humour in Rick and Morty is so advanced that only chosen people can get it. the normal people will laugh in the basic way but WE are laughing because we know that even creator of Rick and Morty knows that the joke was cringe

I absolutely love the show. I am a fan and I'm not ashamed of it. However, I do wish that people could just enjoy something without being weird about it and going to unnecessary extremes.

Please let me share my personal experience and don't come at me for being honest:
I truly enjoy watching Rick and Morty and BoJack Horseman. I'm truly interested in how they gave life to these amazing characters and the stories they had. I even chose my career path towards Animation and 3D Modeling. These shows were a little part of my motivation. when they were competing for 2020 Emmys and "Vat of Acid" won over "View from Halfway Down", I was really bummed out. Not because I don't like one of the shows, I like both of those equally but I was emotionally attached to that particular episode from BH and I felt that it should win them an Emmy. I felt that the creators and writers of the show deserved that win because as an Animation student, I have some idea about how much work and time they put into production to show you these beautiful characters and have you involved into that story and feel for them and all the time placing witty jokes and background humor, that is no easy task. I saw some fans online expressing their disappointment and the R&M toxic fanbase absolutely crushed their souls with hateful comments and threats. I felt absolutely disgusted and in denial for almost 2 years. I never stopped to see the memes or news or anything related to R&M because of how the fans were behaving. I only recently started watching again and has been ignoring online discussions ever since.
I’ll admit as someone who tried to watch Rick and Morty but just couldn’t get into it. I don’t blame the entire fanbase. Unfortunately toxic fans are around in all sorts of media. While there are normal fans that just enjoy and talk about the shows even get merchandise there are the fans that do this stuff.
Be a fan of what you want as long as it’s legal and not hurting yourself or anyone else do you.
