Justin , never assume that we in our 60's who are watching you react to our fav songs from the 70s are ever "sick of hearing" the same song over and over again. Songs from the 70's are not just songs to us , they are Memories and will forever stay etched in our minds and in our hearts .

All his '70s albums are must-own for me including this one. The last track is one of my favorites, 'Hercules' is actually Elton's middle name (his real name is Reginald Dwight). Some credit to Bernie Taupin who wrote all the lyrics. You can tell he's drawn to western themes, on their autobiographical album he's the Brown Dirt Cowboy to Elton's Captain Fantastic. I think it's his best album.

I remember purchasing this as my first album at the same time as Pink Floyd's 'Ummagumma', such a big contrast in music but I was captivated by Elton's piano and the wonderful guitar and mandolin of Davey Johnstone, fantastic bass of Dee Murray and the percussion of Nigel Olsson. It certainly has a country vibe reminiscent of Tumbleweed Connection and this is where I first heard Jean-Luc Ponty and I was taken by his solo playing. This led me to Allan Holdsworth....but that is another story.
I think Honky Chateau is a great album showcasing Elton's wonderful melodies on the piano and my opinion is different than the previous albums because it doesn't have the large orchestral pieces of Paul Buckmaster, it is just his future travelling band providing the backing sounds that I got used to, having seen them many times. Thanks Justin for showcasing this album.

Lots of comments on his early albums, not so many for Leather Jackets or Ice on Fire 😊 Madman has been my favourite Elton John album for years and with that album it's similar to his other records whereby it's the 'deep cuts' l love the most. Hilarious when JP found out after going into his computer's Wikipedia that Jean Luc Ponty was on the album, after showing us his vinyl copy. My first learning of this was when I got the album through mail order, and while listening to it, I looked at the back corner and noticed through the graphics and his large photo that Jean Luc Ponty was "on the album".

Outrageous album and of course one of Elton’s top 5 !Bardo is the pronunciation and Bernie is giving you a sense of the craziness that a teenager went through during those difficult time!KP just as a reminder Bernie Taupin wrote almost everyone of Elton’s songs in the 1970’s and the stories were either about Bernie or something he made up with just a little bit about Elton who outed himself as a gay man back when no one had the guts to do so!

That last song Hercules sounds like it should have been on the album don't shoot me I'm only the piano player. It just has the same feel of the songs like elderberry wine and teacher I need you. It's just a classic Elton John sound and the first one that I remember being in that vein.

It was my first exposure to Elton John, and it became a favorite of mine. I listened to the album many times over the next year or so. But I haven't listened to it in decades. It still holds up after all these years. Not a bad track on it! Thanks for this!

Normally I'm a gotta have that good melody kinda guy and don't always give a lot of thought to the lyrics. Classic Elton John is the exception, though. Without Bernie's graphic imagery, Elton's songs just wouldn't have the same effect on me. Bernie is such an integral part of those classic albums.
And don't overlook the playing of Davey, Dee (RIP) and Nigel. They became such a polished and well oiled machine (but not machine-like) and they knew exactly how to interpret Elton's musical writing. And when they were in the studio recording an album, when almost everything had been layed down, these three master musicians would take over the studio and write / sing / record all of the harmony vocals, which were ALWAYS nothing short of brilliant.

Elton John was so ubiquitous on the airwaves when I was in high school, I rebelled and decided to not be a fan. I did not buy any of his albums until years later when I was in college.
I changed my mind on a Thanksgiving day in the early Eighties while on an errand. My favorite radio station was playing an all-day documentary about Elton John which included facts, figures, interviews, stories, songs and lots of other interesting stuff. When I got in the car, they happened to be talking about Honky Château which was (as has been mentioned) was written and recorded at a rented château in France. If I remember correctly, Bernie had a room in the basement and Elton had a suite on the top floor. When Bernie finished a lyric, he'd send it upstairs for Elton to compose. By the time Think I'm Gonna [Off] Myself showed up, Elton was so deep into the funky honky-tonk vibe he just couldn't make a marose tune out of it.
The next day, Honky Château became my first EJ album purchase. I own and love well over a dozen of his albums now and I am definitely a fan.
To this day, Honky Château remains one of my top twenty-five Can't-Live-Without-Them albums. It is, of course, a very subjective list, but it hasn't changed much over the years and still includes albums such as:
Bridge Over Troubled Water; Chicago V; Court and Spark; Seventh Sojourn; Crime of the Century; Gorilla; Darkness On the Edge of Town; Selling England By the Pound; American Garage; Innervisions and so on...
I had a feeling you'd like this album. I enjoyed your reactions. Carry on, sir!

I'm only half way through watching this but I am going to tell you something. Elton John is not a great piano player. However, he is a great melody writer, and just as important, he knows how to craft a piano intro. That is EJ's true gift. The intro is the thing, if you can't grab a listener in the first few bars, then you've lost the listener. EJ is a master of that. If you want to experience it, listen to the Madmen Across the Water album, which has EJ's best song ever, Levon. You really should have listened to Madmen Across the Water first, but I get it why you listened to Honky Chateau first. It's why people like Yellow Brick Road and all that other stuff.

These are the seventies I don't like. I can't like this kind of mindless jamming music.
Music doesn't have to have a purpose or intention. It can be simply art by art and amusing of who plays or who hears it.
That's fine, but neither items please me. At least, not in this case. Except for Rocket Man, which everyone knows and sticks to our ears (or is stuck to our ears and we can't escape it anymore), I find this hard to listen without getting annoyed.
    What do I know....?
This confirms my uninterest on Elton John. Lou Reed said the seventies were a very empty decade. And I cannot help but remember that when thinking of Elton John, Leo Sayer, Carpenters, etc.
They don't add a thing to excitement, novelty or music. 😮
But, hey, just my experience. I wasn't there when this came out. No hard feelings with ones who love this. I simply don't.
Does anyone living Mercyful Fate loves this? I just want to know...
