54 years on, I still prefer the older Elton John, before he put the outrageous costumes on. Classy not maudlin, a testament to the writer Mr, Taupin. The early stuff was something to get lost in! Peace & Love.

Elton's debut album was "Empty Sky", in 1969. I think it is terrific. It even has an Acid Rock guitar solo in one of the songs.

I was a huge Elton John fan back in the 70s. Not so much past the 80s but that's ok.
I played this album a lot and this song really made me think as a teenager.
I haven't heard it in a long time. I'm in my 60s now and it hits in a different way. I certainly am not sad that I'm living 60 years on but it still makes me think.

This is an extra pleasure to watch and enjoy on his 60th birthday concert performed as Madison Square Garden. It was also the 60th time he played at Madison Square Garden. A lot of celebrities were there as well as Bernie Taupin. A must-see.
I got to sing 'Sixty Years On" not that long ago, but today I'm singing the Beatles' "When I'm 64".☺

Elton John is one of the best artists from the 70's, a decade chock full of great songwriters. Pick any of his albums from here to the mid-80's. You can't go wrong. "Madman Across the Water", "Goodbye Yellowbrick Rd.", "Don't Shoot Me..." All genius.

The live version from '17/11/70' is just Elton on piano and vocals, Dee Murray (RIP) on bass and Nigel Olson on drums. It's somewhat heavy, but very dramatic. Definitely worth listening to.
But this version is also freakin' great, with orchestration by Paul Buckmaster, who orchestrated Elton's mucic through his entire "classic period".
    Very good choice! Thank you.
edit: This is from his second album, actualy. His first album is 'Empty Sky', a somewhat hit and miss affair.

This is a great song. It is interesting to compare this version with the version that he does on the 11-17-70 album. 11-17-70 was a live, in studio, recording and instead of the strings, you get really powerful piano from Elton. I suggest giving that version a listen as well.

I remember buying this album on vinyl from a charity shop (that's what they're called in the UK, 'thrift store' in the US) for £1. I took it home, had a blaze, and put the record on. I decided to play side B first for some reason, and hearing this song for the first time, I had tears in my ears at its dramatic beauty and sadness.
I've since become a huge fan of Elton John's classic era. I think the Honky Chateaux album is my favourite, which contains two amazing songs (both released as singles from the album), the irresistibly groovy 'Honkey Cat' and the masterful "Rocket Man". From this album, I'm also a huge lover of 'Take Me To The Pilot' and 'Border Song'. Just amazing music.

Thrilled to get orchestral Elton and Barclay James Harvest reactions on the same day! While Elton wrote the music and sang the songs, Bernie Taupin was his lyricist in a partnership that began in 1967. Bernie was still only 19 years old when the Elton John album was released in 1970. Paul Buckmaster was responsible for the amazing orchestral work on Elton's early albums up to 1973, featuring particularly strongly on 1971's *Madman Across The Water* album. The King Must Die is another brilliant track from the Elton John album. Incidentally, while the Elton John album was his US debut, his UK debut *Empty Sky* came out a year earlier, but has none of the incredible orchestration that was characteristic of his work from 1970 onwards.

This is Elton when he was good, great even. I can't say that I've enjoyed a track that he's done post 'Song for Guy'. It's no coincidence that he had his hair transplant just before that (1978) - he's a sorta reverse Samson.

Hi Justin. Dave from London, who has put his back out (but I'm Still Standing - just a little hunched - corny or what!). Love this early Elton song, so poignant and atmospheric, with some fabulous orchestration. Remember, as it's Elton, the lyrics are Bernie Taupin's. This album also contains Your Song, probably his most famous of all time. I also like Aretha Franklin's version of Border Song, another from this album.

One of Elton’s best though this is a self titled album Elton did have one album before this called Empty Sky.That album was mostly unsuccessful with maybe one or 2 adequate songs. This album is great from the first to the last song!Justin you need to either react to or check these other songs from this epic album; Border Song, Take Me To The Pilot, The Greatest Discovery, and The King Must Die! You will love all of these!

Try the live version from 1970, album called "11-17-70" in the U.S., and "17-11-70" in Europe. Only Elton, Dee Murray on Bass guitar and Nigel Olsson on drums. These few shows, especially the first at L.A.'s Troubadour Club, made the Elton John Band into an instant legend, at a time when Great Britain ignored him and his label was about to drop him. -- Oron of Montreal

I don't know why more reaction channels don't delve into early Elton John. Also, as others have mentioned, when you think about Elton John's music, it's really Elton + Bernie Taupin. They're a package deal, and at the time of this album were still not fully invested in launching Elton John's career, but still considered themselves 'songwriters for hire', writing for other artists. But when this album took off they were forced to course-correct.

This self-titled offering was actually Elton John's second album. His debut album is called Empty Sky. Having said that, in my opinion Empty Sky is not very good and the Elton John album is really the start of Elton's magnificent sequence of creative masterpieces that carried on at least through Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy. My personal favoourites are Madman Across the Water, Honky Chateau and Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player, with other notables being Tumbleweed Connection and Captain Fantastic.

This album changed my young life (not a bad song on it). Bernie Taupin's writing was a cornerstone to my beginning to write poetry/lyrics. Funny to hear this now (staring at 60 come May). Hits differently than it did at 6. LoL

Elton John is one of the greats but equally great is lyricist Bernie Taupin. The words are his, Elton supplies the gorgeous melodies, piano and vocals. This is a brilliant opening track, I love when he goes for the high notes. All of his '70s albums are worth a listen, my favorite is the autobiographical "Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy". His '80s albums are patchier.

Alas, Elton's debut album wasn't so hot. There are a few tracks that hit but overall the lyrics are dreadful...as Bernie confessed only a few years later. It's Elton's psychedelic beatnik album leftover from his musical excursions into that territory with Caleb Quay. The song with the worst lyrics has the best melody. lol. Dated. Think of it like the album, Genesis To Revelation. Budding, ugly duckling, proto-genius.

A rather maudlin ditty, and maybe not what you think of when EJ comes to mind. He wasn't my partic cup of tea, Rocket Man being his only song I really liked. And I did get a lot of exposure, hearing albums 2 through 10, from a mate who was a huge fan. His stuff, 'easy listening', is ok but it just didn't grab me. That said, there's no denying his musical chops, and sheer staying power.
