This is a great video. Awesome looking stove. Aside from the amazing craftsmanship I also learned some extremely valuable tips such as "Lift with your back" and "Don't wash your hands."
Mate, so good, especially seeing how great the final product is! In addition to appreciating your skill and imagination with these things you make, I also appreciate the smattering of humour and especially like how you include problems and the thought process of working through them. As someone who hamfists his way from one crafting debacle to another and having to bodgy my way out of it, I find that especially useful. Thanks very much

I’m a 66 YO fart who used to do a lot of welding…producing everything from SS vibratory parts feeders to multi-million dollar Lithium Ion battery manufacturing systems.
Now, in retirement, I want to get back to welding again…as I truly enjoyed it. Blessings y’all.

It was great to see your thinking process throughout your issues and how you worked through them. Thanks for including that even though it made the video a little longer. It makes you more believable when you allow us to see that you are, in fact, human. Your final product was both great engineering and quality craftsmanship. It is a shame that you have to paint over such beautiful welding. Truly appreciate your tenacity.

Awesome build run! Thanks for taking the time through the rocket stove build. I would love to see a rocket stove married to a biochar retort to produce biochar for garden soil amendment. A biochar retort could be added as a round tin to the chimney riser end base. So instead of just air, you're adding syngas from wood back in.
He could also make activated charcoal with the heat he's getting.
Thats cool, having equipment that makes your work quicker... It's like you've made the airflow into a "J". Keep up the great work.The vortex is a thing of beauty!!

Sweet stove. I've fabricated a few Smokers, a few fire places then moved onto fabricating efficient wood burning shop stove heaters. I learned early on the benefit to having secondary burning, and dialing in airflow to not only the secondary burners, but to primary air intake. Having a flu dampener has helped too. I'd love to make a stainless stove with a window someday. I guess a Kimberly stove clone with auxiliary functions for water heating, cooking, and etc. You did a great job so far, keep the vids coming if you can. I recently subbed.
Dude, I’m a yank and totally enjoy your work! I work with my hands, back and mind too, but in maintenance and rehab of elite athletes and the aged. Function is it. Fabrication involves art, science and skill. You have connected them. Your time invested and end product are the cats meow!!! Functional and no BS.

The coriolis effect (swirl due to gravity) is trivial; the geometry of the stove and baffling will determine which way the vortex swirls. Great video, I got a lot of fantastic tips on welding!
Seems sensible that the aerodynamics in a stove would play a much bigger role in the vortex direction than the coriolis force.
P.S. Love the videos. You're a legend!
i took a course in arson investigation and fire produces very strange but understandable burn patterns depending on a thousand things....good observation

Rockets do take a lot of air to run efficiently... as you found out.
Mine has an insulated firebrick burn tunnel and riser... With pellets, I've gotten the exterior a bit over 1000° F. But I have unlimited firewood... only gets up to 750, 800.... I'm good.
Next build will be a vortex.

The circular air entrance converting to a square inner flow is creating broken lamiar flow, and probably low pressure areas. This is probably why cracking the door always worked better.

That glass window you added is a very nice touch. The orange and red of flames like that is among my favourite colours. I didn't know a stove could get hot enough to burn even the soot and ash without insulation. Thanks for making this video. Though having a stove that reaches over 400 degrees centigrade seems like a bit of a safety hazard.

Your licking and sniffing of the fireproof glass as confirmation made me laugh out loud. "Tastes like fireproof glass", "smells like fireproof glass"...sure glad I didn't step in it.
Your TIG welds are nice. I prefer MIG welds, personally-- not for structural reasons, but you can get really smooth beads.
The build looks great. It's a pleasure to see these ideas come together.

I like the way you have done these videos. elements of your life & humor come in & out briefly. I am suffering from a little guillotine & press envy, nothing a little time traveling would not fix.
I had an anolog porto mig for almost 25 years, I was sad the day she died & I was told by the welder tech that she could not be saved. I had a close connection with her, that is not possible with modern woman.
Last year I bought a razor too, still getting to know her, but I am really pleased with how she goes, started my 1st stainless mig project late last year , starting my 1st mig aluminum project in the next few weeks, buying the tig torch & bits soonish, keen to start learning me to tig.
I love the non symmetrical form of your finished prototype, that you let the holes remain on the base plate. Utilitarian but simple & elegant.
I learn a lot - not just about rocket stoves but also tool use etc. Enjoyable videos. I like your commentary as well. Bravo, keep it up!

Incredible video production. Thanks for sharing this with all of the different segments and pieces spliced together. I enjoy your chicken and knife work cutting the hinge tubes. Have you considered adding larger, pneumatic wheels to your equipment table for movement between shop locations? In addition to the scientific information from building this stove, where will you be using this unit? I trust that you are creating a journal documenting your findings. Perhaps you could publish a Tips & Tricks notebook for sale in addition to your rocket stoves.

I couldn't understand what he said there. Is it an apprenticeship, to become a journeyman? And what does "fitting and turning" do exactly?
No offense, just interested in understanding how Australia makes skilled trade workers. As a journeyman Mold Maker, with plenty of Tool and Die instruction and experience, they are often alike and often require the same tasks and knowledge
I'm going to guess a "Fitter and Turner" would be close to our Pipefitter designation, but that's usually specialized in industrial and heavy commercial applications.

Part 1 inspired me to actually evolve from vicarious rocket stove design theory, and move forward with my one own ideas by making a mini vortex, employing some of your ideas.

What a balancing act to go through to get where you ended up. Amazing heat output in the end. Love the window. It would be especially interesting to see how adjusting the various air inlets affects the system.

I've heard "A grinder and paint makes you the welder you ain't" a fair bit but here in the UK, when someone commented that your welding wasn't pretty, the phrase a lot of us used was "No, But I've got enough on that I can GRIND it back to pretty". It's a philosophy that's worked well for me.
It also works for spray painting cars. You get enough paint on there and you can wet 'n' dry then polish it back to being smooth and shiny. If you don't mind the extra sanding and being seriously wasteful with paint you can near as damn it put the stuff on your car with a roller before sanding back to the shine ! :D

This series has me really wanting to buy a welder. I have some modifications I'd like to make to that design to increase the air draw and to recirculate the exhaust - like a DIY afterburner type-thing. Great video.

If you preheat the glass with blow torch... it stops the sooting of the glass.. building a rocket stove at moment... two years research and looking good, but keeping to myself at moment, as would like to put them into manufacture... great work buddy and will show you what i have been working on when ready...

Only one thing if I can say , from what I've observed in many rocket stoves videos and my stove experiences .... it seems that the SECONDARY AIR works better when all that secondary air flow is coming as near as possible to the flame so all the mix can also ignite,
In your case, as near to the bottom, because , the holes near the top will allow air in but may not really ignite cuz is not as hot as near the flame as possible

Effort well spent mate, such a nice build! Can you please show a schematics or diagram explaining how it works and how air flows in it? because I'm still confused how it can make such a nice vortex fire in the riser and how the fire doesn't come out of the side pipes. I'm planning on building one for my own project and hopefully can learn much from this one. Cheers!

All it needs now is some form of coil down the flame exhaust, with a pipe in and out to cycle cold water into hot.

I enjoyed the effort and journey you took us on while you experimented with this project.
When you get bored, and have nothing better to do, you should build another with the vortex going the other way to see which performs better. Or if there is any difference at all.
