    Honestly in my personal opinion I don't believe New school erased the character development of the movie but rather it was the natural next step for Kuzco to truly be a good person/emperor. While he may have learned to be a better person, he still has literally an entire life's worth of selfish/entitled behavior to unlearn. Of course he still has a bit of selfishness left in him and throughout the series he works on those traits and was capable of learning a lesson at the end of each episode. Pre-movie Kuzco would never have learned almost any of the lessons from the series and probably would have blamed everyone else for every problem he faced so his capabilities to learn and accept his mistakes and flaws is the character development from the movie at work. He didn't revert backwards, he just has way to many selfish character traits to be completely erased in one life changing adventure. The movie was step 1, acknowledge that you're horrible and try to be better while the series was step 2 of actually working on fixing yourself. That's what I believe and one of the reasons I enjoyed the show as is

      One thing I think that makes the show work is Kuczos age. The movie glosses over the fact that he's just newly 18. As a kid I always thought he was at least 20 which made the show confusing for me

      I Also want to point out how El Dorado came out at the same time which (since it had a similar setting and similar themes) supposedly "split the vote" and took some of the attention and dollars from Emporers new groove. So this would explain the gap of popularity between this initial release and its TV show.

      Keep in mind, Kuzco is only 18. Most people that age in real life are trying to figure out maturity, now imagine someone who's been waited on hand and foot all his life being thrust into a new world where he must be an average joe and has to learn empathy the hard way.

      I do think if they wanted to they could bring the franchise back. It would just need a new antagonist and kronk would end up fully integrated with the protagonists full time.
      Might actually feel kinda fresh cause heading yzma around gave the exact same motivation, template, conflict, and types of humor.
      Though it would be easy to end up messing it up by making it too little mermaid 2ish, or feeling like nostalgia bait that just doesn't hit the same way (too...ppg rebootish maybe?) When the goal is to be more like the Ben 10 sequel series. new and refreshing certain cliche aspects (most notably the available aliens and thus general strategy), but keeping the heart, core, and character appeal

    • @foxyfox9196
      @foxyfox9196 2 роки тому +5

      I don't think yzma was bad or anything. She was pretty iconic and right up there with basically every other Disney villain. Just like uncle max wasn't bad at all. In fact she couldn't feel like such a lynchpin if she was unpopular, uncharasmatic, or unexciting. Without yzma you really can't have a typical episode.
      Those types of characters being there does kind of create a rut and a sense of predictability and even stability. Not inherently bad. But sometimes good to retire the character (even if only temporarily) in order to have a better chance at exploration, growth, and creating real status quo changes.
      And sometimes it's good to just let the episodic formulaic shows be what they are (like Phineas and Ferb that was very popular for a long time).
      But i feel like most groove fans want the character development and to see things actually change once Cusco is a better person (and always trying to get even better every day). They want to see the kids grow and the kingdom change. And there does seem to be a sense of disappointment in most people (not just myself) that the series was so episodic and devoid of real growth or change

    • @roberttreacy8271

    The reason they cancelled the show is a very respectable thing to do. Too many shows that are popular would be milked even after something like the death of a perfect actor. It shows that the people making the show actually cared about it and not JUST the possible money.

      @@xdeadheadx Yeah, I find the US' obsession with voice actors very weird. Like cancelling shows or characters because the original voice actor departed or died is just weird to me.
      In my country, if a voice actor dies or leaves, they get replaced. While I appreciate the voice actors of my country, they don't nearly have this glorious reputation that their collegues from other countries like the US have.

    • @lolnothxyt
      @lolnothxyt Рік тому +9

      @@DariaHoelzel I find it weird to not give that degree of value to the actors. I mean, they are actors and their voice is essentially the entire character beyond the visible design. It breathes life into it and a replacement or subpar job can completely ruin a character.
      I find it strange they would NOT be held to high esteem. I mean, they are the heart and soul of that character and how far somebody can push their voice and still maintain/convey emotion - heck the ability to even CONVEY emotion at all - it's all skillful. I mean, some people are so iconic in the actor and/or voice actor department that an entire character is designed with them in mind in the first place and then the project or character completely canceled if they can't get that person onboard. Because they were the center. The point. Robin Williams is one good example in the amount of personality and uniqueness he brought to every single role he played. You can't just...bring somebody else in to mimic him. What.

    I felt the same way about Kuzco’s change initially but it’s unrealistic to expect that one sequence of events would just get you to total enlightenment. Making a change is an everyday struggle that’s not shown in Disney movies so I don’t think it’s unrealistic for a character to fall into old habits or not be completely changed. It would have been nice to see him occasionally think on his movie experiences when conflicted about doing the right thing, though. That would have been the best way to have your cake and eat it too

    Rbh I feel like they didn't really break Kuzco's character either. What you see in the first movie is him opening up to being kinder and considerate as well as being friends with Pacha and his family, and none of that really changes in the show. He didn't have suddenly become the most selfless person in the world at the end of the film, it just has a dramatic event that sets his life in the right direction, a direction we see him start to go down in the film and then continue in the series

    I always considered this series to have taken place in the time gap of the creation of Kuzco's vacation home. Kuzco learns his lesson at the end of the movie, but it hasn't completely been drilled in his head yet. Rome wasn't built in one day, and people do not change immediately. So, the series takes place right before the end, in the gap where Kuzco has to learn to be Emperor again.

    One thing that never made sense to me though is how does Yzma become Empress by having Kuzco fail? In the first movie, Yzma was Kuzco's adviser who got fired and nobody knew that other than her, Kronk and Kuzco, so killing Kuzco would state her as the emperor's replacement since there is no heir. But everybody now knows that, so Yzma should not only still be fired but should be in prison for her crimes.
    Sure, she somehow free and in hiding and they give her a disguise as a Principal Amzy, but there's several episodes where she's out of disguise and out in the open with no problem, even making it clear that almost everybody except Kronk can see through the disguise. Sure, I can buy that she got off with being stuck as a cat and she went into hiding when it wore off somehow, but in general, her plan and her being free was a plot hole I thought needed to be addressed.
    Regardless, I love that Eartha Kitt and Patrick Warburton returned to do the voices of Yzma and Kronk as highlights of the show and Eartha Kitt will be missed (R.I.P.)

While I get its a cartoon so not meant to be realastic, but to me, it does make sense he still needs to unlearn a lot of his behaviours, they're his basic impulse responses, and he has to keep learning what is and isn't acceptable, in diffrent situations, so i enjoyed that element, not many people irl get one big life lesson and change everything, it's a slow progress to rewire your brain, especially at kuzcos age, well under the estimated 25 years old, that most people are when they have further frontal lobe development which typically increases a lot of elements important to understanding others and socialising in a respectful way, so i was never put off by his character having some what of a reset. I thought it was a pretty fun show, especially compared to some of the other kids shows on at the time, in the uk that is, we didn't have access to us channels around at that time .

    I remember the series from my childhood far more clearly than the movies. I absolutely ADORED the series and would stay up late when I could to catch it, at around 4:30am as a nine year old. I haven't gotten around to rewatching it as an adult but I always felt it would have aged well and still be funny enough.

    I confess I did hate that Kuzco went backwards throughout the show but I’m glad he went back to being a good person later! I did like the show and I’m glad it ended on a good note where he became emperor again and that he got the girl of his dreams! ❤️ I can’t wait to see your video on Timon and Pumbaa! It was one of my favorite Disney shows too!

    I can treat the show and the movie as two separate entities so I'm not really bothered by the changes. I did enjoy the movie as a kid and I really enjoyed the show because it was essentially more of what I liked just now in bitesized pieces on my TV.

    I wasn't really allowed to watch tv as a kid, but sometimes on the weekend, this would be on and my dad would let us watch it. Before commercial breaks it would always say "we'll be right back with the emperors new school on ABC Kids" and for some reason, that specific phrase stuck in my brain permanently, and now, almost 2 decades later, every time anyone says "we'll be right back" I have to physically restrain myself from saying "with the emperors new school on abc kids"
    I saw maybe half a dozen full episodes of this show, but it has etched itself permanently into my brain

    Wierdly I caught this show while I was already in the University. So I didn't know it existed before that and I had more or less forgotten about the Emperor's New Groove. I remembered just Kronk. But idk, in some lazy, wasted sunday I wacthed an episode and thaught the humor was pretty dope. Eventually I watched what I think is most of season 1. Never watched season 2 but...I have very fond memories of this one. And it was one thing we had in common with a girl that I was crushing on back then. We talked a lot about the show and how much we loved it. Nowadays we still have our inside jokes about it. So to summarize I keep this one close to my heart. I remember it being hillarious and it made me watch Emperor's New Groove again and like that one all over. Perhaps it is time for me to watch it again, this time with season 2.
