  • This home movie was shot by George Devlin, an American visiting Canada on vacation in 1939. Believed to be primarily shot in Montreal, let me know in the comments if you recognize any of the scenery! The first few frames may actually be Quebec City, as an ad for "A.E. Marois Limited Boots and Shoes" on the side of the building suggests it was near the Saint-Roch district. The song "Les Américains" about visitors to Canada during prohibition is sung by Quebec folk singer Mary Rose-Anna Travers who was known as Madame Bolduc or La Bolduc. Unfortunately, this audio produces ads on the video, but I really don't want to change the music, so that will have to suffice. This film was transferred to HD by Cineworks in Vancouver in March 2013.

    Nicely stabilized - thanks!
The Montreal Street Railway Co built the first sight-seeing car in 1905 and it was so popular they built another the next year. Successor Montreal Tramways Co built two more c.1923. All four cars are in preservation, two at Exporail and two more at museums in New England. At least three of them run regularly.
I'd love to know where the "cattle stampede" (lol)) was and where the farmer was doing his thing. #TheKidsToday -- and really, #TheKidsOfThe1970s (me!) -- don't have a good sense of just how much food was grown on the island back in the day.

Do you know where the Imperial Gasoline would have been? At 0:43 is that Christ Church Cathedral in the distance where the tree is sticking out?

Born in 1939, I grew up on Queen Mary Rd about a mile from St Joseph's Oratory and I've just seen an old film of it in 1927 when it was being constructed! Wow! What a treasure these old films are. Eh, as I used to say donkey's years ago ? 😊

Hello! I am currently making a documentary about my grandmother who grew up in Montreal. I need some footage of the city in the 1940s, and this is absolutely perfect! I was wondering if it would be alright if we used some of your amazing film. You would get an Archival Producer credit in the film, as well as an additional hank you in the credits! Here is more info on the film- @t
