This is how the Soviet Union looked under Stalin

- Stalin's Soviet Union comes to life in full color with the discovery of a long-hidden collection of images.
Major Martin Manhoff spent more than two years in the Soviet Union in the early 1950s, serving as assistant army attaché at the U.S. Embassy, which was located just off Red Square at the beginning of his time in Moscow.
He took full advantage of his post, using his gifted photographic eye to capture hundreds of images of everyday life in Moscow and across the U.S.S.R.
When he left the country in 1954 amid accusations of espionage, Major Manhoff took with him reels of 16 millimeter film and hundreds of color slides and negatives he shot during his travels - including of one of the Soviet Union's pivotal events, Josef Stalin's funeral.
But after his return to the United States, the trove of rare images lay forgotten, stored in cardboard boxes in a former auto body shop in the Pacific Northwest until its discovery by a Seattle-based historian.

I urge anyone to watch a video of pictures of Russia before the revolution. From a country of barefooted, illiterate millet farmers to the first human in space in a single lifetime. I don't think people really understand what the Soviets accomplished in terms of how fast they were able to modernize their previously feudal society.
They had no choice but to do a bolshevik revolution : before WWI Russia was a ressource-exporting colony of the West. All wheat grown was exported to Western Europe, mostly Germany, while peasants were forbidden to consume it and had to feed themselves upon buckwheat, millet and rye they grew on badlands. Only the Bolshevik revolution put a full stop to that abuse. They went barefoot because all leather was for exportation.
Just 5-8 years after the Great Patriotic War (WW2). 27 million Soviet people died in the fight against Hitler's Nazism.

The Empire was one of the fastest growing and industrializing states at the time. It had the highest distribution of land ownership of any major power, lowest cost of living, and many more things going for it. Russia was set back at least 10 years due to the revolution, and the Empire was not feudal.
The british had to destroy it as they had always wanted to, and the only reason the Soviets were able to rebuild so quickly was due to unbelievable western support and aid.

The title of this video is incorrect. These photos were NOT "colorized", which means that color was artificially added recently. These are original color 35mm slides, using film that was sensitive to colors and registered realistic color images that way. Since the photographer was American, he was almost certainly using Kodak Kodachrome film, which under good circumstances remains vibrant and true to life even as much as 80+ years later.
Nothing about those photos is true to life that's nonsense. Photographers almost never ever attempt to make photos that are true to life. Each film has a style and this is what makes them sough after and not because true to life colors.

Just 5-8 years after the Great Patriotic War (WW2). 27 million Soviet people died in the fight against Hitler's Nazism.
@@rozachernushchernush5549 Still, 27 million is the wrong number. This amount appeared in the later years of the USSR as part of a political struggle.
The most reliable casualty number is closer to 16 million dead, include:
11.5 million direct military casualties killed and dead (including those killed in captivity).
4.5 million direct civilian losses, including Soviet citizens who were taken to Germany for forced labor and died there, losses among the militia, bombing victims, blockade victims, genocide victims of the local population in the occupied territories, and others.

Europe is severely flawed and still capitalist, but the left still has enough of a foothold and our social safety nets are okay. This is the way forward. The proper revolution is a slow and steady one, using democracy and transparency, and also individual freedoms. The collective starts at at the individual after all.
Capitalism will by itself show how bad of a system it is before it collapses on its own fundaments. It is inevitable.

Two things you can get from this video: 1) Yes, people had a normal life, even when things were that bad. 2) Real tyranny won't be accompanied by a desaturated blue filter and ominous music following you around, meaning you could be living in a regime like this today and you won't realize or do anything about it, you will just mind your own business.
in other words, you won't know if you live in a tyranny if the western propaganda didn't notify you about that
True words.
The Second World War and the German occupation had a heavy impact on the USSR. Old-timers said that after the war of 1941-1945, something seemed to break in the iron body of the country, and it was never able to recover to the pre-war level. It seems to me that the feeling of such a breakdown can be felt from these photographs.

This is a country that had its industrial revolution in the 20th century, following a world war, a civil war, a famine, and was robbed of its gold and treasures by the British during the revolution. They still wear the tiaras of the Romanovs. And the Soviets did this without the access to international investment or foreign banks. It did it without colonies, slavery, or wage slaves. This is what independence looks like when you are pressed on all sides. Its not the walk in the park Americans had, with help from Russia.
If most of these pictures were taken in and before 1953, that would mean it had only been 36 years since the abolition of Russian Feudalism, and if the Soviets only put their first economic plan in 1921 (following the end of the civil war), it will have only been 32 years since their first National Economic Plan. Such an under-taught history in the US in general, and sadly, even amongst people who share the same aspiration for the global liberation of humanity. I'm not even an apologist for the Soviet state, yet, on a strictly economic and developmental progress basis, it was an impressive result.
It didn't need colonies because through aggressive expansion Russia gained access to 40% of all strategic resources. This country should have been the richest in the world.....
oooh I am sorry, should have known you are a ruzzian shill. youll never admit that the criminal soviet government killed millions of their own citizens
And also the red army looted eastern europe soo badly they took the hungarian, romanian and polish gold reserves and many other panitngs jewlery ect...
The brutality that they had is insane looted half of europe killed many who just simply didnt agree whit stalin as a easter europian i van only say bád things, if america didnt send guns and equippment the soviets sufferd much more, and also after the war they got loans from ze west

Они ковали Победу в тылу. a good look at the past of the soviet union with good music
Excellent photos, revealing images from a system that made its role and then disappeared, by the way, the background music is really wonderfull!
You gotta remember that this was only a few years after the Soviet peoples were fighting for their very right to exist.

I never realized it before, but I always Imagined the stalinist era as: the sky is always black, no moon, no stars, just black. Screams rings out, but everyone is too scared, cold, and hungry to leave their government-assigned unit.
The sun shone even on Stalin... that's unreal, in a way, lol.
Just looking at these pictures ... I thought I was depressed. I can't imagine what living in this place would do to you
i wouldn't know a single thing about this era of the world. but i can imagine the number of people who are taken back to it like how I am taken back to the 2000s whenever I look at old media.
First, I don't think Stalin is an angel who came down to earth, because he was a person and people have their complexities and contradictions. Second, seeing people talk about Stalin being a monster, terror and blah, blah, blah...
Have you ever stopped to think about how much this is also an propaganda?
No one needs to like Stalin, but there is no doubt what his leadership, together with the USSR working class, did. In less than thirty years they went from the wooden plow to the first people in space. Furthermore, the USSR was the key player in the destruction of the N42is.
Second, seeing people talk about Gitler being a monster, terror and blah, blah, blah...
Have you ever stopped to think about how much this is also an propaganda?
After all, "the N42is" were far more successful global project than your beloved Kim Jong Il, Pol Pot or Dzhugashvili (Stalin).
The space and nuclear programs of the US and the USSR are largely based on their developments and research of ancient technologies.
And the same "Kalashnikov" was developed by Hugo Schmeisser, who worked for a while in the USSR.
While history is still a social science, comparing it to propaganda is farcical. There is overwhelming evidence from both Russian and western sources that Stalin was responsible for the deaths of tens of millions; whether through mass murder during the terror, class (Kulak) and race (Holodomor) based genocide during the first five year plan, or simply the sheer ineptitude of crash industrialisation.
The rapid economic growth from the 1930s-50s is simply a case of base effects, I.e adding capital to an extremely undeveloped economy results in rapid growth - in the Soviet Union’s case this growth was extremely expensive in lives and suffering. Thanks to rapidly diminishing marginal returns the model was unsustainable, and by the 1960s growth was stagnant and the country never came close to achieving western levels of development.
On a final note, praising the USSR for putting Gagarin in space first is like praising North Korea for building nuclear weapons. Any country can dedicate a huge % of GDP to a pet project and get results, but at the expense of what? I’m sure the Soviet space program was a source of pride to all the people queuing for hours every day for basic necessities.
The only people with a license to praise Stalin are working class former Soviet citizens who don’t know any better (like my ex MIL). Doing so as a westerner isn’t just cringy, it’s straight up ignorant.
@@ninety_three1993I agree, praising Stalin's economic achievements is like praising Hitler for building the autobahn and the first weapons to reach space. Any accomplishments from totalitarian regimes are tied, directly or indirectly, to their abuses of human rights. Maybe we can appreciate Stalin in an alternate timeline in which his regime never invaded and plundered the gold reserves from all of the Soviet Union's neighbors and never built the Union's infrastructure on the backs of slave labor.
Seems like you are way too high on weed to think clearly.
