The Van Halen debut set the world on fire! All killer, no filler!
THIS. ^^^^
Facts
Yep, they blew Sabbath off the stage first time I saw them. Felt kind of sad for Ozzy.
Damn sure set my world on fire! I was 15 then 59 now and I STILL Love this song! The whole album but this song was my absolute favorite!
A live debut album no less!
"You know you semi good looking... ". 😂😂😂 love that line
Classic Roth! Lol
😂😂😂
Hundred percent best "GTFO biatch"😂
Me too
My favorite Van Halen song. Just real musicians playing real music. No samples, no overdubs, no auto-tune, no BULLSHIT! Just good American ROCK N ROLL !
For all the hoopla about Eddie's solos (well deserved of course), he was also an incredible Rhythm guitar player. Superb timing, great tone, incredible nuance.
“All Gas No Brakes” love it! And in total control!!!! Guys… When this debut album hit in ‘78 rock music fans shit their pants! No one played a guitar like EV!
Thank you guys, you can't go wrong with any tune from their debut album.
These guys had it all, as great as Eddie was, DLR was a super charasmatic singer, AVH was a killer drummer, and Michael Anthony was a solid bass player who sang amazing backing vocals. Each one had a sound that was instantly recognizable on their own.
And I credit Van Halen for getting attractive women at Rock Concerts. Other bands sporadically had good numbers of women to see Robert Plant, Daltrey, Mick Jagger etc. But Davie Lee Roth almost got Elvis powers on the women. Most great live rock bands were predominantly Sausage Fests. Sabbath had a few scary witch chicks, but not many to look at. Van Halen was like MTV music videos in the audience. Their videos had hot chicks so the women coming to VH concerts seemed to be dressed for recruiting (barely dressed and braless).
@Greg which was good for we guys as after the concerts they were willing lol
@@Greg-io1ip I remember the local rock station giving the ladies commemorative KNEE PADS with Van Halen tickets. Different time and it was fun!😊
Best song of the album. With "Atomic Punk" a close second.
Crank this up!
one thing that hardly ever gets mentioned is tje crucial key to VHs early “sound” was Michael Anthony. He was key to VH’s early Rocket Sauce recipe.
So good on the harmonies !
I saw them do this at an outdoor festival in 79. 35-40 thousand people yelling Hey! hey! hey! At the same time. Bad as hell!
This song was cranked up at every high-school, beer keg pool party I went to.
All Eddie, no overdubs... Just classic.
Music for this album was done in 6 days. Facts. Just mic up the amps and drums and press 'record'. DLR's vocals took longer - 8 days
This album was one of those that came out for me in high school and really had an impact for those times in my life. Wild crazy rock and roll. Still like it even as an old timer. Great album from start to finish
This album hit in my junior high years and was a big influence. Thanks for the voyage down memory lane
Yep I was in 11th grade when this dropped.
Eddie wrote most of the music while David Lee Roth wrote most of the lyrics. Eddie changed the sound of Rock with what he called the Brown sound of his guitar and amps in addition to his riffs, virtuoso technique and out of the box playing in general.
My favorite VH song of all time... off one of the best debut albums of all time! I was a teenager when this album came out, and there was nothing like cruising around town with my buds with Van Halen thundering out of my car's sound system... good times :)
I’ve been to the edge. I’ve stood and looked down. Lost a lot of friends there baby. Got no time to mess around. That line means a lot to me for very personal reasons. One of the great rock songs of all time.
is he refering to broken hearts ??
Same Brother! Hope all is well
@@Michael-Philip he could be but I see it as the edge of the bottomless pit of hopelessness. Or being on the edge of suicide. I have been to that edge and I did stand and look down. That was a long time ago though and I’m in a great place now. But I understand.
@@DavidJacobsvo Check out 'The Fonz' by Smashmouth ... .
Check out Outta Love Again! A deep cut banger!🤘🏻🤘🏻
Michael Anthony goes hard on that bass! He has that high background vocal also!!!!!!
Van Halen' first albums with David Lee Roth are mind blowing and creative like nobody else
I blew my speaker out with this song. That’s no joke.
This debut album, along with the Boston debut album, are considered to be two of the best debut albums in rock history. You really ought to look at everything on this album. I was in junior high when this came out, and it was everywhere and everybody bought the album and you heard it at the lake and you heard it constantly on the radio and it was just so good. It sounded so revolutionary at the time.
I was also a junior in high school and this is the 100% truth! All you heard coming out of kids cars was VH!
Add The Cars debut. All were game-changers
The guitar didn’t have a flag but Eddie Van Halen’s signature painted stripes.
My favorite VH song! Saw this performed many times live. David was such a great front man and then there was Eddie!
One of the greatest guitar riffs of all time.
The sound of Eddie's guitar was something we had never heard before when this debut album came out. Pretty much floored everyone. Every track is excellent.
One of the amazing things about Eddie Van Halen is that his guitar tone was different on each album. You still knew it was him though. He described his tone as a “brown sound”
The flanger he hits intermittently is one of his musical staples, it goes up one time then down the next. He was asked how he did it and said "I always just get lucky".
Alex Van Halen, their drummer is a beast and you'll hear it once you get around to songs like Hot for Teacher. I can't find a video for it, but Alex and Motley Crue's drummer Tommy Lee used to one-up each other with their stage shows. Seeing a drummer seated in a 6-point harness at a live show, you know you're about to get your money's worth for the price of admission.
“Ice Cream Man” is another quick banger off this album.
Eddie Van Halen guitar didn't have Union Jack (British flag). I think that was Def Leppard. Eddie Van Halen is American. But his guitar was red with some white stripes. Maybe that was what caused the confusion?
This is true 👍👍🎸🎸👑👑
Coolest line too, Semi Good looking!
Boy, I couldn't click on this one fast enough. One of their best, no doubt.
1978 I got this jamming shaking the house my buddy walks in and says WHO THE HELL IS THIS . THE REST THEY Say is HISTORY.HOF.
This album is duly noted as one of the top 10 in debut albums. Well deserved.
In the late 70s I used to frequently go to the roller rink. The music was mostly disco and funk but Van Halen was played a lot too. Not many rock artists got spins at the rink…🖖🏼
I was always at the rink .. we were called Rink Rats.. Most of my time was spent playing the old video game machines.
@@Michael-Philip Mainly, I was just trying to learn how to skate backwards so I could slow skate with the girls. The guys always had to skate backwards. Video games came in when I would fall on my ass trying to skate backwards!🤣
Even though we ain't talkin' 'bout love, I just wanna say: I freakin' love you guys. ♡
EVH called his tone and tuning ' the brown sound'. That VH I debut knocked over every kid in 1978! I was one of them!
I'm the One-Van Halen 1. Mindboggling Edward solo and....a barbershop quartet towards the end of the song. What more can you ask for.😁😁🎸🎸👑👑
If I remember correctly, the guitar intro was sampled by two live crew. I can’t remember the song, but it was around nineteen ninety or so. As a teenager, I remember blaring it in my truck through the ten inch subs while cruising down through the parking lots that everyone would hang out on Friday or Saturday nights.
In the 80s 2 Live Crew sampled this song for "The F*** Shop". They even performed it on The Phil Donahue Show. I clearly remember blasting that song from my bright yellow Magnavox boom box while skateboarding at the reflection pools at The University of Massachusetts, just waiting to be chased off by security. Good times.
2 live crew! Used this for one of their songs back in the 80’s. That could’ve been where you heard this.Van Halen wrote the soundtrack for a couple of generations of rock music. Not really just rock but you can hear it in country and rap. Their influence was incredible, the ultimate party time feel good rock n roll band! Great reaction you guys and thanks for reacting to one of their greatest classics here. Brown sound at its best! ( it’s in the fingers not the equipment)
This song was THE Van Halen arena rock anthem that closed out every live concert.... specifically, the "hey, hey, hey" at the end of the song that the audience could contribute to and fill an entire arena with decibels that no one ever herd before (btw? Screw mobile phone lights..... LIGHTER lighting was the ONLY way to do it. Also, one of the ONLY songs that Sammy Hagar, second front man singer after David Lee Roth (who was the original singer to play for Van Halen fans), actually played at the end of encores to finalize a Van Halen Experience LIVE. This song was simply the ONE to end every concert with and if one listens to it? One will know why.
I wish I could take you back to some of their live shows in 79 80 These shows were life changing.
1978, debut of Van Halen, Rest In Peace EVH
Rode my bike to the mall for this one in 1978 and then on a cheap Quadraphonic stereo with 8 speakers was transported into the 21st century, by Eddie!
If you heard this when it came out, you immediately realized the nod to the Ramones in the "hey hey hey hey" ending.
luv it, i been to the edge and stood and look down....
Man this song plays every day for last 30 years on my list. Never gets old that riff that bass
This album blew us away when we were introduced to it by a friend in high school, late 80's. This song def my fave or tied with Running With the Devil, but love the rest. Life was great back then. Thanks for the memories!!!
Eddie Van Halen absolutely changed the way an entire generation of us played the guitar and that changed the way those coming after us played the guitar. He was simply the most innovative rock guitar player ever. He was doing things none of us had ever heard of or even thought about doing. He made all of us better and happier.
I always loved that last hard shred Eddie does towards the end behind alex. Great touch and finish.
Their live concert in Hampton Va 1979 was like a outer body experience, I dont know how the coliseum didnt crumble to the ground.
Y'all are on fire. Great morning wake and bake music!!
Not to take any shine from one of the best debut albums of all time, but Hot For Teacher from a later album is an absolute killer. Some of the greatest drums ever recorded.
True
"All gas, no Breaks" - That's how we felt in '78. Thanks for that.
I'll add, at that time, the 'big' acts were the British rockers like Zeppelin, Purple, Sabbath among others whom were more complex. Here comes Van Halen in your face with these incredibly tight songs. There were a few like Ted Nugent, but these guys rewrote the scene like few others before.
This was recorded & released at the height of DISCO & PUNK.
Released: February 10, 1978
A great show closing song for them - huge bright lights from behind the band lit up the audience, timed to synchronize with HEY! HEY! HEY!
I couldn't hear right for three days after seeing them in 1980 ;-)
Every time i saw them with David Lee Roth ( 4 times ! ) my ears rang for 3 days ! But whatta party !
Van Halen!! Thank you!. Drop Dead Legs by VH is really funky, such an incredible song. Off their huge '1984' album.
One of the best debut albums ever made👍🤟🎉 rip Eddie🙏
Man I love watching you guys react to rock music. Your appreciation is so fun to watch.
I saw Van Halen open for the Doobie Brothers back in the day. I had heard of them but didn't know anything about them and they blew my mind!
Bought the vinyl at release, one of my first, and played it so many times. Great memories!
Great hard driving song by Van Halen. Thanks so much guys for reacting to this one. You are right - "all gas, no brakes"!!!
The American Led Zeppelin.🗽🧨🎼🎸
Great choice! Everybody Wants Some is a must if not done previously.❤❤
One of my favs
2 Live Crew sampled Eddie's guitar riff on THE F SHOP back in 1989, ten years after the original Van Halen track was released. Maybe that's where you heard the riff?
I'll tell u wut..."All gas, no brakes"... this channel is that! Bad ass!
Glad you did this one! This song like most of theirs kicks ass!😎
“Jamie’s Cryin” is my favorite song on this album! Eddie Van Halen’s guitar playing is the best!
One of the best hardrock albums ever. I was 12 when this was released and it still kicks ass. On Fire and Atomic Punk are my favorite songs off this album
I love watching you guys do reactions and reviews to music. Great insight.
Crank it up! Grunge sounds like Van Halen, I think, because all the grunge rockers were ten year old kids rocking out to Van Halen back in 1978 and 1979 -- and the impression never left them even as they aged into their twenties and thirties.
My fave tune from my fave band
Saw them live right after this album came out. Amazing!!
Keep 'em coming Guys!! Tearin' IT UP!
I was a freshman in college and listened to this album on headphones in the music lab at full volume. Had never heard anything like them. Killer album! Hope you gents listen and react to all of it!!! I’m the One next please!!!
Gosh I miss hearing this band live! Eddie is truely remarkable! Singing that hey, hey, hey at there concert for there encore was the best!!
Thank you.
Love this one of my favs for sure ❤
Great one!
Such a great Album !!! My youth !!!!
What an album and tune! Reminds me of my wild youth….
Eddie wrote this. My fav VH song from one of the GOAT debut albums.
There is a reason the guitar magazines coined the term Pre and Post-Van Halen. Everything changed with this album dropped.
Another great reaction! "All gas, no brakes"; LOVE that! My husband is the bigger Van Halen fan, but this is my favorite Van Halen song; got to play this one loud when playing it in the car ❤
One of VH ICONIC j’s.🔥🔥👍🏽
The most iconic guitar song. The reason they were so special is you never mistaken them for another band. You knew you were listening to VH
Straight FIRE!!!!!!!!!!!
Eddie called his tone the brown sound. I think 2 live crew sampled this song.
Thanks!
It’s not the flag of the UK. Eddie named the guitar Frankenstein because originally he use different guitar parts to create the mechanism that became his signature sound so what he did was he taped up the guitar to make it look like different pieces take together like Frankenstein. That then became the signature paint for his EVH guitar line if my memory serves me correctly I’m sure somebody will correct me if I’m wrong.
Drums like a freight train comin down😱😱
I think I was in 10th grade when fellow classmates uttered the word Van Halen and the rest is history.
Take Your Whiskey Home. My fave
fun fact 2Live Crew even sampled the opening guitar riff😆😆its call “the -uck shop, i think 😂😂🙏🏽honest they did
Party music in the 80’s. Reminds me of being a teenager.
As a kid hearing this album on TK101 in Pensacola Florida... changed my world
As kids today say ...THEY WERE THE TRUTH ❤
Eddie Van Halen is listed as #8 on the Rolling Stones magazine 100 greatest guitarists list. We could argue the list, but one thing for sure is that dude can play.
Technique, attitude, no soul
