Agreed….I have a few M1’s and they are great. But my 27” 5k iMac is my go to if I’m at home. I also purchased this on a $600 off sale! So, less than $1200 USD. I plopped in another 16GB of memory ($50). I mounted an external 1TB drive ($79), and it’s perfect. The brightness and color are perfect. And if your not working tons of video edits, its the perfect machine. I like the idea of another 27” design one day…but until then, 2020 iMac’s are the best.

    I have a 27” iMac 5k Retina with 1TB storage, 32GB RAM, Intel i9 processor, and a Radeon ATX Pro 5500.
I also have a brand new M2 Max MacBook Pro 14”.
I’m still partial to the iMac. Handles everything I throw at it, and laughs at me.

I am in the same boat. I do have the i7 and the 5700xt version of the iMac with 64gb.
I also have the M1 Pro laptop 14" and I have to say...man oh man..that iMac is STILL a beast! It also beats my M1 Air in practically everything.
I feel it's like a desktop version of the M1 Pro or even Max without being as expensive.
Don't think I'll be upgrading my macs until perhaps...M4? M5?
We definitely got our moneys worth.

Even after M1 and M2 release if you need stability and fully functional Thunderbolt 3 (up to 40Gbps and no driver issues or speed limitation) just use Intel Processor, since M1 and M2 USB4 Ports has speed limitation on usb-c ports (Mac Studio USB-C ports can barely reach 10Gbps and only the front ones).

Thanks Jerry for reviewing this gem of iMac now where others are going for the new and shiny toy and tend to forget about this legendary 27-inch iMac 2020!
Few days ago, our local third party Apple reseller is selling brand NEW standard top-spec 27-inch iMac with 3.8GHz Intel 8-core i7 with 512GB SSD and 5500XT 8GB for around ~USD$970. It was a steal so I bought 5X for our office.
One point to note from our digital artist/designer when comparing between the black border of the 27-inch iMac vs the white border on the new 24-inch iMac is that the white border tends to distract the colour selection accuracy for quite a bit (a distraction?), which she does not experience when using the black-border of the 27-inch iMac.
I have a high confidence on this line of iMac as the reviewers call it the "Pinnacle" of Intel iMacs which we can use for many years to come:
    1. Highest self-upgradable RAM - Up to 128GB DDR4
    2. First True tone display for iMac
    3. First iMac come equipped with T2 chip
    4. First iMac with Hyper-threaded Intel processor across the line
    5. First iMac with full solid-state drive (2GBps+ read/write is sufficient for our digital agency, coming from Fusion Drive)
    6. 3-array Microphone
    7. 1080p webcam - Sufficient for the next 5-10 years (We survived with 720p for this long eh?)
    8. Our developer cannot find libraries compatible with M1 iMac yet
    9. Still able to have Bootcamp for Windows installation if required
    10. Next 27-inch iMac will NOT have user-upgradable RAM and might only have USB-C ports by looking at the 24-inch iMac or Apple Studio pattern
I can't stop looking at the gorgeous screen when I am still using my 16-inch MBP 2019 - It's unfortunate that we cannot hook this baby up to use the 27-inch iMac as Target Display Mode anymore. I bought an LG 32UN880 4k display and it has no match to this 5k iMac.
Good luck finding one now peeps!

I use mine as my daily work horse still today & it performs great. I plans to keep it until it stops working or stops performing well & can't be fixed.
Although my M1 Max 16" MacBook is great for on the go.
It performs great but the display is to small if I was to use it for desktop use. I could use my 40" 4k t.v. as a second display for both of my Macs. But the 27" iMac size is perfectly fine.

I have a high-spec 2020 iMac 27" - 3.6 GHz 10-Core Intel Core i9, 64Gb memory, and AMD Radeon Pro 5700 XT 16 GB. Benchmarks for the newer Macs that have been released so far still can't beat it, except for an edge with single-core performance. As you point out, the ports, webcam and monitor are right up there with the best! I guess we will wait to next Spring to see what Apple presents as the replacement. For the next year or two, I'm very happy with my decision to buy the last Intel iMac that Apple produced. BTW, I run an app that is important to me that depends on Intel architecture, and the developers have stated that they won't be moving to full M1 support for at least another year, due to the recoding work involved. So I agree, there are still compelling reasons to stay with Intel for every day desktop use. BTW, I have a good quality Dell IPS 4k display as a second monitor, and as you assert, there is a *significant* difference between 4k and 5k!

Thank you, for this excellent comment post one the value of Apple's last 27-inch iMac computer. For the power to price ratio, I would have to totally agree with you. However, for myself when buying an Apple desktop the looks of the system will also, come into play and this is where we differ. For myself, the best All-in-One Apple desktop is the 2017, "space gray" 27-inch iMac Pro with its included "space gray" matching keyboard, track pad, and mouse. Last year, I also picked-up another desktop system which, I love the "space gray" trash can 2014, Mac Pro with dual D700 graphics processors. Next, I added a matching "space gray" keyboard, track pad, and mouse plus an Apple DVD super-drive, and everything is working great together (smile...smile).

I 100% agree with all your points... I bought this one even after knowing that the M1 iMacs were on their way considering 2 strong reasons.. a 27" or more M1 iMac would take at least a year or 2 to arrive and that too any new product usually comes with some inherent bugs that are usually fixed in the subsequent models. Today, I am happy for my decision after seeing issues with heavy swap memory issues with M1 Macs and considering the fact that you can not have larger memory like you can have in intel iMacs.

A handful of us Gnu-Linux users are exploiting the Intel imac. Resale value is scaling downward, so I get a complete i7 computer for less than the cost of a 27-inch display by itself. These systems tend to have had very good care. My OS doesn't care that apple is phasing out Intel.

Nothing to contradict here: I love my iMac 5k i5 (1017) except that for video editing it is too slow. I impatiently wait for an M1 pro/max successor and hope it will stay in the same price league. Don't really need a mini LED display and would just be thankful for a "Macbook Pro M1 max" machine in an iMac 5k shape. Would choose a version with enough graphic cores, SSD space and RAM then keep it for at least 5 years.

I currently upgraded my system HD to an SSD for my late 2015 i5 27" 5k imac and it has made a huge difference but I am really tempted to sell it and get the 2020 i7. The T2 chip, possible upgrades to 128 RAM and the updated ports would be great though I really want to see what the new M1X imacs will include. Since I´m not really in a hurry I might wait til early next year to make up my mind. If I still decide to go for the 2020 imac, maybe by then I´ll get it at a discount! Thanks for the video just so I know I´m not crazy to be considering an Intel imac in 2021! Keep up the good work!

Then I waited for the M1 Imac, bought the 1tb 16gb version, and didnt like the port set up at all, and still seemed undersized and when side by side with the 27, it felt dwarfed. Returned. I just picked up a 27 imac i7, and after doing some research on youtubers comparing the M1 imac vs the i7 2020 imac 27, when it came down to video editing, and photo editing, even if it were a draw, it made it an easy decision to get the bigger 27 imac. Solid! I like this statement. I don’t agree for my own use though.
For myself, I have a gaming PC just a bit weaker than the iMac 5K maxed out model which I built prior to the iMac’s release for somewhat less money. I am extremely sensitive to noise and also hesitant to allow heat buildup in the summertime, and I was trying in 2020 to use a 16” MacBook Pro, sharing the display and speakers of my PC, as my only Mac. The 16” MacBook Pro with Radeon 5300M and 5500M graphics just really wasn’t designed to be used with an external display all the time. It runs much hotter while connected to one than while you use it unplugged in your lap. As a result, you can almost always hear the fans. This drove me to distraction. When I learned that the Mac mini with M1 was inaudible, I realized it would slot in with the display and speakers I had, and just work! It was such an easy and happy purchase that I prematurely ditched my $5,000 16” MacBook Pro within a month. But the 27” iMac is compelling because the 5700 XT model could run Windows in Boot Camp and be as powerful as my PC, or boot into MacOS and be a work horse, all without switching displays and speakers, or even designing a workspace that accommodates two computers at the same time. In the rare case where you need Windows and MacOS screens up at the same time, one could use Parallels and VM the Boot Camp partition. It’s a very compelling package for less than the total cost of my desk setup. But I am one of those people who needs Windows and MacOS in front of me at the same time and who has software/driver issues with Parallels which prevent me from using it for my workflow, so having two machines is strictly necessary for me at the moment, and my setup now allows me to keep the same 49” 600 nit display, $500 audio interface, speakers, etc. and upgrade the computer components when I want or need to do so. Plus, when I’m not doing heavy gaming, I end up with a Mac experience which is objectively as good or better in display and audio quality as an iMac, and bigger/louder, but the computer powering it all is dead quiet and runs cool. It just feels right. Also, the Mac mini has almost all the same ports as the iMac 5K, and the only adapters I’ve used have been USB hubs. Even those, I could have skipped with more careful use of the internal ports. So basically, I have a setup objectively better and more flexible than the iMac 5K, but which requires more work to use and which cost more money. I’m glad to hear the iMac 5K works for the rest of you!

In the last couple days, I pulled the trigger on a heavily discounted 27” iMac i7, (COSTCO discounted $300 off their already low price and extension of manufacturer warranty up to two years and friendly/knowledgeable geek support). I’ve been debating this purchase since Aug 2020, but Apples recent direction and actions taken, have convinced me that they are headed in the “wrong direction.” Now, more than ever, consumers need bang for the buck, not big cost for more gain than they really need. The iMac i7 has more power than I’ll need, even in heavy use. Thank you for the video.., it confirms my logic.

    • @MegaChriz
      @MegaChriz 2 роки тому +2

I think that a 2017 iMac is more than recent enough! At home I'm still using a MacBook Pro from 2009 - though it can't handle everything anymore what I'd like to do with it, partly this is because of newer versions of software that no longer run on it, partly because some more intensive tasks take quite long. But there is still a lot that it can do well like photo editing, graphic design, programming and video calls (though when doing video calls in the browser the fans become quite loud).
So if you don't experience lack of software support or intensive operations that take too long, then I think there isn't any hurry for you to upgrade soon.

Jerry, I am absolutely saturated with UA-cam research. Saturated to the point of decision immobility. I find your videos speak to all levels of users and apply common sense. That said, here’s my dilemma: I have and in the shipping box an iMac i7, 512GB, 5500XT. I got this unit from COSTCO on sale for $1899.99 ($300.00 off normal price). With the M1X just around the corner, am I shooting myself in the foot? Should I take this back? Is this still a good purchase with future proofing in mind? How quick and how deep do you see the monetary value dropping?

Last year I seriously considered this iMac with the idea that it would be nice to be able to run Windows on it if I want to. At about the same time I came across a few games that looked somewhat interesting but were only available for Windows.
Later I found out however that some of these were also available on NVIDIA GeForce - and I also discovered that some Mac titles that I bought in advance (at a discount) were available there. So in terms of gaming, there was no hurry to upgrade.
An other reason for me to go for this particular iMac was because of 3D rendering with Blender. But I discovered that Blenders default render engine (Cycles) cannot make use of the GPU on macOS on this iMac (not sure if it would on Windows, but that would imply a suboptimal workflow anyway if I constantly need to switch from OS). There is an other render engine available (made by AMD) that does work on the GPU, but most tutorials for Blender are using the Cycles render engine, so it might get harder to properly follow these.
So these two things alone made the reason to go for this iMac already quite weak. Then there's also the fear that new versions of third-party software that I like to use (Blender in particular) may no longer support intel Macs in say five years. Okay, that's something that's unknown, so not a very strong argument. An other thing that looks like a downside to me is heat generation - which would not be great during hot summers. I like the idea that the M1 Macs run a lot cooler.
So now I'm waiting to see what the rumored M1X will bring us. 🙂

Good points. I would say for heat…it’s a desktop computer and not something I am concerned about. My i7 almost never spins up the fan.

You’re not wrong. But … value for money will be the decider. Bang for buck the M1 might just beat the 2020 iMac … BUT, 2nd bargains make the most sense. Then again, what about heat? Fans? I’m still undecided.

I may have covered that in my review but I almost never hear the fans and for a desktop I assume there will be a little heat.

Am I the person who thinks the old iMac design is so much better to the new design?

@@JoeCannon1 I appreciate it! The switch can be fun if you enjoy learning new ways to do things. I switched to an iPad for almost 2 years before going back to the Mac.
