As a professional musician who grew up in church playing guitar. It is good to see church musicians becoming more sophisticated. Back in the day. Church musicians were encouraged to overplay. I guess in a way of showing how good they were?? or whatever it was, they were trying to do.But as time has gone by we can see that style of music needs to change.
All of us Seasoned Bass Players totally agree and thank you for eloquently encouraging younger players to keep it simple, in the pocket, and work around that.
Very good lesson. Many gospel bassist are guilty of overplaying. You don't have to display your every talent in a single song. Every musician should learn this.
I really appreciate and enjoy your view on the matter, it makes so much sense. I know that as a musician of gospel we also have the call to lead the people not just to worship but to want to worship. We lead their hearts to the thrown of God that restores and heals.
Hey Mr. Morgan I've been a guitarist of over 40 years, as a young musician in church, I hardly ever took my eyes off what the bass player was doing. I think church bass guitar playing is my favorite of all bass guitar music. I love it!! I started out wanting to be a bass guy, but I discovered Eddie vanhalen in the late 70s thanks for you great content sir.😊😊
Hey great content as always. One of the fastest ways to get better at anything is figuring out the component parts of a skillset and then figuring out how to get more reps in less time! As a bass player, that's a principle ive used over the years to successfully figure out these exact skills and subskills that youve been sharing! Back then, it was sheer trial and error! So it's really refreshing to hear a pro like you go through the checklist! I dont discount the process though because it contributed to my development-both as a player and educator. In saying that though, I've tried to pick the brains of some other top guys as well and i've noticed that they're intentionally withholding info or they have no clue how to articulate "HOW" they learned the skills or worse yet, unable to detail with specificity, the skills they're employing, i.e the info you're presenting. I really hope this bass community recognizes how important these tutorials are!! Would you ever produce content on your role as an MD? cheers
My third video of you I just found you oh my goodness you got me hooked man I think you're a great orator and bass player thank you so much I am looking for more thank you
Man, that is so good! Love the gospel stuff, but our church mainly does contemporary worship, Hillsong, Phil Wickam, Bethel, which if I am being honest can be kind of boring. And like you said, we don’t want to draw attention to yourself by overplaying. Could you do this same exercise with a contemporary worship song?
I started playing bass in the mid-80s…and it seemed as though overplaying became extremely over-valued before “grunge” broke. I was always a bassist that lost out to bass players (that often over-played). The more they shred, the more that I dove into Willie Weeks. James Jamerson, Larry Graham, and the like.
Amen Sir: The points that you have mentioned goes for all musical artists and participants!. Music also has to breathe. "The silence between the notes are just as important as the notes themselves " ( Miles Davis). I say, With music people want the big return with the minimum investment,... That's not how it works... You have to put effort and self control to your passion to make it shine... I learned to play Bass in 1972 in an orchestra in high school with the mindset of the bass being part of a big picture and that bass part just didn't make much sense until you heard all of the other instruments parts played and WOW... It was like frame work to the whole scenario!... It was bigger than me, but I knew that was for me. Every instrument, Orittor or Vocalist needs to be mindful of this!... Thank You For Sharing AND God Bless.
YOOOO J, THAT WAS A GREAT TOPIC! 👍🏾YOU ALWAYS GOT CATS THAT LOVE TO SHINE AND GRANDSTAND, THEY FORGET, IT'S NOT ALL ABOUT THEM, ESPECIALLY IN A CHURCH SETTING!
Same here, self taught bassist. I definitely play what I feel but I try to be as tasteful as possible in the process. Jermaine, this was a very good video and well needed in today’s climate of musicians. 👍🏾
Great Video - I am one of those seasoned musician bass and guitar player. I play with the younger generation musician very talented plays well , but lacks band etiquette.. I'm most definitely going to pass on this video to them. Thank you..

As a bass player I recommend you to listen to the whole album of Erykah Badu's "Live" from 1997. Master class on play less groove more.
Love the videos! I'm a fellow Fender Jazz 5-string player. I'd love to hear your thoughts on tone controls / pickup selection.
