  • Have you ever wanted to mix and master your beats but don’t know where to start? Is the thought of mixing and mastering your own beats intimidating?
In this video, I break down a simple four step process to help guide you through mixing and mastering your first beat.
Learning to mix and master is simple with this four step beginner friendly process. This is because, this process teaches the absolute fundamentals. Once you have these down, you can move on to more advance mixing and mastering tactics to make your beats shine.
    This process starts with:
    1) organize and importance
The most important thing to do when mixing and mastering your beats is to organize your project into groups and sub groups. I like to categorize my projects groups with drums, instruments, synths, basses, loops and sound effects.
Once you have your groups and subgroups made, it’s most important to figure out what the driving elements are of your beat. Usually it’ll be a synth lead or melody and your drums.
    2) levels
Now we start mixing. You want to start with your kick drum around -12 db and mix the whole beat around that. Slowly start with your most important drum elements and get all of the drums levels where you want them. Now continue adjusting the levels of each group starting with most important to least important. Then if necessary, you can adjust the levels of each individual sound or instrument that needs adjusted.
    3) eq and panning
When mixing and mastering, you need to cut out frequencies that you don’t need to make the mix clear and concise. I like to start be eqing the lows out of everything that doesn’t need low frequency. This opens up room for the low end In The mix. You can do this with the high frequencies as well to cut down on metallic and piercing frequencies.
You’ll now need to pan some elements. I’m the video you’ll see I used panning to adjust the mix on my hi hats since they were off centered. But also I used panning to separate sounds that occupied the same frequencies. I did this by panning on instrument to the left and the other to the right. Be careful not to pan them too far though as it may send the mix out of balance.
    4) master volume
Now it’s time to “master” your best. Here we are only adjusting the gain level of the final master. I like to put my ceiling at -.1 db. Now you pull down the threshold bar to start raising the overall volume to the desired level.
    -14 lufs for streaming
    -10 lufs for production music
-6 db for a beat that will feature an arrow
-as loud as you can without distorting for max volume.
