Alright, class dismissed! As usual, leave further questions in the comments section and I'll get back to you when I can! Now get back to work. #alwaysbepracticing
You refreshed me after being retired for 20 yrs. I have to illustrate/design my nieces WD. Did her mother 35yrs ago. Had to buy new supplies. Fortunately, I have an accomplished dressmaker so I don't have to construct the dress. (the veil is mine to do). Your videos are inspiring and just the kick I needed to restart my fingers. Excellent tutorials and comments. Great work!
I like how you mentioned so many things but kept it short and clear😊 I'm so weird, everyone else likes drawing or designing dresses and I have zero interest for it and they are definitely my weakness, especially evening dresses. I'd love to see a video on corsets, looking forward to that!
I love these fashion vocabulary videos! I'm pretty decent at drawing, but I still don't know what a lot of things are called or how they are constructed, so this is super helpful for me! Thank you!!!
Love your videos! Thanks so much! So helpful, informative and you have such a nice drawing style. What farber castle pencil are you using 2b? Love the texture xx
omg my fav video.i just seen your videos recently and i love it.it inspires me.i wanted to be a fashion designer since 3 and u motivated me with that.thank u.pleas send more
Hey Zoe! Long time fan and i love your work, I was wondering if you could do a video or a series of videos where you give a design brief telling us what to research, the themes and styles of the clothes etc. because I really enjoy pushing myself and cant find and design briefs online. Thank you so much !
Hey Willow! I absolutely love this idea! We could do a design class, where I give a design brief and each week I give a homework assignment with the next step in the design process and have viewers submit homework via tumblr and I can crit a few on video before assigning the next bit. I wonder if others would be interested. I'd only do it I had a lot of interest. I think I'll post some surveys asking. Or alternatively, I could come up with assignments and post them to my tumblr or facebook...so many ideas...
What if I put together a facebook group called "Zoe Hong's Design Class" and I gave weekly homework assignments following my design process centered around a brief I put together?
Ok, I'm going to set aside some time the next couple of weeks fleshing out this idea and start asking people if their interested in the facebook group, because I think that's going to be the easiest way to set things up. Thanks for the awesome idea!
Such a useful video! When you render a ball gown with markers, do you use the same technique you showed us on the how to shade with markers video? I have tried once, but the marker was drying quickly and I couldn't blend the colors nicely. Thank you for teaching us all those things!
Hi, I've only recently come across your channel. Do you have a video showing how to correctly add Victorian/Edwardian bustles and things? I want to do illustrations of period fashions to use in handmade vintage look journals.
hello Ma'am .. You truly are the best teacher I have ever seen..you describe all the small minute things intensely which creates a deep impression on our minds.. Ma'am there is a small request if u could demonstrate how to draw Indian dresses ..bridal or casual. I would be very greatfull to you . lots of love and respect from India .😊
I'm sorry but I don't know anything about Indian dresses, but I do have a "Drawing Clothes on Bodies" series/playlist. It should help you basically draw any kind of garment.
To be clear, I don't hate godets, I hate sewing them. Godets can be any fabric. I personally try to keep godet fabric lighter than the main fabric because otherwise they hang awkwardly. (Both in weight and stiffness)
wooooow amazing vid, i will watch it again and practice and send you the result to give me your advice really thank you soooo much for these important tips
Hello Zoe :) Could you please upload the sketches of your fashion croquis that you have used to sketch all these on? The fashion illustrations, in all the angles you have. especially the side poses.
Use a very thin pencil. .3mm. Practice on larger heads and get smaller and smaller. Practice drawing your shapes with 1 single line, instead of doing sketchy lines or going over your line over and over again. Good luck!
I always use a darker/softer pencil for demos so everyone can see, but for sheers, especially veils and tutus, I always draw super super light and I even get really light in how I apply markers and brushes to paper. You have to control your hand more when you try for a lighter touch. I have a tutorial on rendering tutus/crinolines/veils coming up as a continuation of my sheers series that I will help you.
I know its late and probably wont get answered, but do you use references for croquises? If you do, could you recommend some places to find some good reference photos?
Hello Ma'am...Is it possible for you to have a tutorial on Indian Dresses and Indian Bridal Wear ? It will be really useful if you share a few techniques with us for drawing Indian dresses. Your videos are a blessing to all those who do not have a formal fashion education . Thank you so much :)
Of at you so see this, by I you do, I love. It! I'm working on my landscape for my portfolio, and I want to add people but, I just can't draw the dresses. But since I'm going for a more old, vintage style, I think I want to add people with styles of dresses I saw here!! Also I'm doing a Japanese style portfolio, is there a way I can send you some pictures? Like on social media! 😄😀😁
Yeah I know... But GREAT CLASS!! Can you do a corset vocabulary video?? I would like to submit a class for petticoat, cage , hoop pockets and stuff like that used to shape garments.
I'm using marker paper in this video. I don't paint on this kind of paper. If I need to present this later, I'd mount it to a cheap stiff paper like cardstock.
what school do you teach at. i would love to be your student.. also where did you get all the fashion women drawings on a page like that...it would be extremely helpful
Grandpa's request Keep my love ones engaged. I gave in and they have run of my studio. Thank you When I was their age I would want to get to that studio. They have it and you. Thanks for many gifts.
I learned the history of Watteau back gowns in my costume history class! It comes from the French Rococo movement and is named after the French artist who painted the "Watteau back gowns" of the era. Generally there were two styles of gowns: the English style which was like a more traditional gown and the French Watteau back with cascading drapes. They were usually made of paper taffeta and women would wear them with paniers (bread baskets). Zoe, can the hated godets be lace or any other sheer fabric?
To be clear, I don't hate godets, I hate sewing them.
Godets can be any fabric. I personally try to keep godet fabric lighter than the main fabric because otherwise they hang awkwardly. (Both in weight and stiffness)

Could that be a Faber Castell Aquarelle pencil! They are so the best!
No, but it is a Faber-Castell. It's one of their regular pencils but in jumbo size, so a thicker barrel and lead size. I love it.
Aaa, all the vocab! Thanks for sharing! =)
You're welcome!
Remembering all the vocab might take some time, but this video is a great source. Now, to get some tracing paper...

Ótimo video; há um pequeno problema com o seu aúdio. Mas o croqui ficou muito bonito, obrigado.
this was so great!!! my only problem is making them transparent without making them look like a mess!!!
I always use a darker/softer pencil for demos so everyone can see, but for sheers, especially veils and tutus, I always draw super super light and I even get really light in how I apply markers and brushes to paper. That's the plan!
What type of pencil you were using in this video?
Of at you so see this, by I you do, I love. It! I'm working on my landscape for my portfolio, and I want to add people but, I just can't draw the dresses. But since I'm going for a more old, vintage style, I think I want to add people with styles of dresses I saw here!! I don't do private critique.

Ps: What's wrong with audio?
Yeah, I'm sorry about that. I tried a new thing and it failed horribly. BUT I did get a new mic so hopefully we won't have that problem again.
Yeah I know... But GREAT CLASS!! Can you do a corset vocabulary video?? I would like to submit a class for petticoat, cage , hoop pockets and stuff like that used to shape garments.
I'll add it to the queue.
if you draw on transparent paper, how do you colour it?
I'm using marker paper in this video. I don't paint on this kind of paper. If I need to present this later, I'd mount it to a cheap stiff paper like cardstock.
