I love YOUR Goodreads' Choice Awards' content. You (and the other creators) make it fun and I feel less lonely/"crazy" ranting in my room. Edit: This was FASCINATING! Cant wait for your next videos about the Awards.
"i really said no to my darling dreadful thing........ and it feels right" LOL well we'll see! the way you've compiled this list is very interesting, i love stuff like this and seeing how the interests of a community are gauged/analyzed
I will expect to yuk it up on MY DARLING DREADFUL THING, but I hope to have a horselaugh about GLORIOUS EXPLOITS, too. Both were really great reads. I really enjoyed watching your process!
oh i was SO excited to see glorious exploits as a contender even if it didn't make it to your list lol 😅 i really loved it & i think it's absolutely going to be in the historical fiction category even if it doesn't make debut
I think you're right about Ministry of Time. It has done particularly well with people who read 12 books a year, imho. I'm surprised The Husbands is a cusper because I've heard so much about it! I think Eyes are the Best Part will also get a genre nom.
I love me some GR content! I’ve read 4 from your list! I give both How to End a Love Story & We Used to Live Here 5🌟 and The Eyes are the Best Part & How to Solve your own Murder 4🌟 respectfully. It’s been a good year for debuts!
This is so interesting! You should look back at prior years and collect data from the shortlists. I think you can come up with an algorithm to predict future winners and then test it each year! I wonder if factors such as "want to read" or the average rating matter more based on other factors like indie published vs. traditionally published?
I thought about this!! I think the problem is that there isn’t a good way to capture what the data was like at that moment in time. I would be running things based on its present numbers, which could be misleading.
I don't know if you were only doing BOTM as a book box here, but there were a few that were Aardvark Book Club picks! I specifically noted How to Solve Your Own Murder, This Cursed House and The Eyes are the Best Part while watching. As far as the ones that are not definite nos at least lol there were more but not in actual contention
I only looked up Book of the Month, Reads with Jenna and Reese’s Book Club info! I thought about looking at more book boxes but I had to cut myself off from more data collection lmao ❤️
@@mynameismarines That's real I figured! Aardvark is definitely starting to be a bigger deal but is still a lot smaller! I really enjoyed this video as a huuuuge spreadsheet and data nerd! Super cool!
I have a feeling like My Darling Dreadful Thing will be definitely there. I read it, wasn’t entirely my thing gave it 3 stars but I’ve seen quite a few ppl posting about it on socials and picking it up + goodreads has already been featuring it on some of their Instagram posts lists of book recs sooo idk I just have a feeling like it’ll be on there
@@mynameismarines in fairness, my perception of its reception may be biased though hahaha I was studying in Netherlands when it was published (the author is Dutch) so naturally, I sort of saw it more around + I incidentally follow and know quite a few Dutch bookstagrammers so maybe my exposure to it has just been heightened by circumstance 😭
The only book on your top twenty that I've read was A Sweet Sting of Salt. I thought it was pretty good, but I don't think it would have much of a chance compared to a lot of the other titles I've heard rave reviews of, like Ministry of Time
I do use it because it’s really helpful for BookNet Fest stuff. I’m not sure I would find it worth the price JUST for personal use, but for personal and event use? Yeah, I definitely get my use out of it.
I'm a primarily Adult SFF reader and have read 5 on this list (and DNFd 1: Ministry of Time) my fav book this year is actually a debut, but I don't think a cozy sapphic/ace horromantasy is gonna make the list, lol: Someone You Can Build a Nest In read books: That's Not My Name-- this was a genuinely good thriller that did exactly what the genre usually promises but fails to deliver. really made me question if maybe YA is just better at thrillers. I'm a sucker for Dark Academia, but I read ARCs of both Society of Lies and Immortal Dark and both were pretty bad, tbh. I'd be very disappointed to see them nominated/win. Voyage of the Damned-- I sometimes struggled to call this a book. and I think it was published Adult, but it leaned very low YA to me. I really should've DNFd. We Used to Live Here-- this surprised me that it's so popular when it's got a bit of a scifi/paranormal element and the end gets fully weird with few answers to give the reader. I dug it, but I wouldn't expect the gen pop to be eating it up as much as they seem to be. is the author rich? related to someone famous? like seriously, what's up? 😂
Seconding your assessment of Voyage of the Damned. You can see the YA faves that it is borrowing heavily from, and at best, it's a popcorn read that drags on for too long. Choosing to follow a MC who doesn't have any particular skills, no one likes, and no one talks to really didn't work for the bulk of the book being "MC thinks about maybe trying to solve a murder." I finished it, but IDK that I should have.
The Ministry of Time is such a weird book to me. Like, on one hand, there were some nice sentences. On the other hand, it's VERY clearly the author's own self-insert fanfic with a real person who existed in history that she found hot. The scifi elements exist solely in a "oh, I guess there should be a plot here" sort of way, so if you want coherent time travel, that is not this book.
The Book of Doors is my #2 read of the year but #1 2024 release (North Woods is my fave read but came out late 2023). But it came out at the same time as City of Stardust (which got the big adult fantasy hype but ended up not being great). I can see it getting a nom but not winning in both debut and fantasy. Ministry of Time was very approachable sci fi and super fun. Except Graham Gore was a real person and per the author note I googled his pic and… girl u okay? And A Short Walk Through A Wide World is my #3 this year. Another one for debut and fantasy noms but no wins, I think. I think Honey might be an editorial nom for debut. It straddles the line between popcorn and literary well.
goodreads choice awards content and best/worst reads of the year is what i look forward to most in november-january booktube honestly lol
Saaaame! I was like I know I barely made videos this year, but this is my time lmao
omg i love this spreadsheet!! i think you've done so well predicting considering how hard i think debut is to predict!!

I am EXACTLY the right type of data nerd to love this idea even if i havent read most of the books on this list. I love a good formula fr!!!
I’m glad!!! I made this for the data nerds ❤️

lol thank you ❤️

😩😩😩
It wasn’t even on my radar because of its low numbers!!! HELP.
Glorious Exploits won the Waterstone's debut prize here in the UK, maybe it could be the rouge low-number editorial pick?
I am here for the spreadsheet, girl! 🙌🏾 Maybe you should make a list that's strictly by the numbers and one with all your spidey senses.
You're speaking my language with that spreadsheet
oh my gosh this data is amazing 😍
2 vids in a week?? God bless 🥹💕
My reaction exactly!
i came for the book talk but stayed for your nervous laugh. so cute! 🤣
Omg the spreadsheet!! I love this!
I LOVE the analysis!!

I know that you have been busy with Bindery and everything else, but I am so exited every time I see that you've posted a new video!!
goodreads choice awards content is my favorite time of year! And debut might be the hardest to predict!
I think you're right about Ministry of Time. It has done particularly well with people who read 12 books a year, imho.

100%. People who do not actually like scifi seem enamored with The Ministry of Time.
Books and spreadsheets, my kind of content!
This was very satisfying to watch! Curious to see the GR list now...
Thank you for making this video. I Hope This Finds You Well is one of my favourite books of the year. I hope it does well.
I love end of the year content. I am actively rooting against The Ministry of Time which means it will probably win it all.
I started reading it and I wasn’t minding it so far! Gotta keep reading 👀

Good to know I have some titles to look forward to!
Really solid list here!
the Ministry of Time is one of the most hyped books this year and i do NOT understand it. it's so bad lol.
I started it but put it down to come back to…. Eventually. Seems like this project is gonna make me try it again.
It was one of my few DNFsof the year. I was just bored.
I love for the mess / fun that is the goodreads choice awards, my favourite time of the bookish year

@mynameismarines true true, I wonder if the wayback machine would work??
I love this project!
Lots of these are on my radar and wanted to read them. Or saw people reading them. So I think you might be close with all of these.
I can't wait to grade my test lol
ive come to look forward to seeing the goodreads videos
The author of Martyr has published multiple poetry books so I’m not sure if they are eligible for the debut category.
I think if it’s your first fiction book, you count!
I reckon welcome to the hyunam dong bookshop will be in the top ten because so many of my friends who are you big readers have picked it up
We used to live here was fun 🥹
I haven’t read most of these books but only because I’m still waiting on them at my library.

I read very few books on the year they're released, which is always my main takeaway from these award lists. 😅
Greta and Valdin is my fav debut.

Nov-Jan booktube is peak booktube in my opinion haha
Are you using Canva premium and if yes, would you recommend it?

oh i’m so early, thank you for your meticulousness
Seeing my favourite read of the year getting axed for low rating is a bit sad, but I knew I was in the minority
Ooooh SPREADSHEET TALK *chinhands*
Amateur spreadsheet talk!!! But I did my best
@@mynameismarines it was good spreadsheet talk ;)
Dang I haven’t read any 😅 few are on the ever long TBR though…

I can appreciate the data tracking/consumer popularity thing but also…how do you NOT include The Spear Cuts Through Water?
Easy, it was not published in 2024 ☺
It’s also not a debut! His first novel is The Vanished Birds

@giantcupofcoffee does he have descendants? I thought the whole thing was that he died single???
