very excited for sci fi coming up in 2025! i wanted to go back to classic oldhead sci fi works this year, and while it's important and illuminating to see the issues at the roots of the genre, to be perfectly honest, it's been pissing me off big time. i'm looking forward to some more fresh and diverse perspectives in my sci fi reading next year.
I am SO looking forward to reading The Unmapping once it is released, the more I hear you talk about it, the more excited I get! Also added a few of the other titles you mentioned to the TBR ✨ Can't wait to hear your thoughts of Some Desperate Glory once you get to it!
I feel the same about the new Hunger Game book. I don't see how looking back at the past of Panem can add anything of value to the original trilogy. Maybe a book from the perspective of someone who grew up in another one of the districts could be interesting, but I don't understand why we need the gory details of Haymitch's backstory. I know he's a beloved character in the original trilogy, but he can't possibly be the same person in the prequel before the Quarter Quell. But who knows, maybe Suzanne Collins will surprise me
Your commentary on people complaining about "not enough vampires in Vampires of El Norte..." It's so cathartic. And it ties in perfectly with your post election thoughts about people, in general, not being able to read (between the lines). My goodness, it is going to be a tough four years. Excellent recommendations, as always. I'm excited to check them out and hear your thoughts on them too. Thank you!
After adding so many recommendations to my TBR, I HAD to subscribe!! Special thanks about Megan Giddings and her upcoming novel .... Ms. Giddiness has become an automatic purchase .... thanks again!
Isabel Canas and Silvia Moreno-Garcia are absolutely on my most anticipated list for 2025. So excited. I also get so annoyed with that critique of Vampires of El Norte. That book made me cry and that is a feat!
excited for the literary sci-fi and Sky Daddy! Will also give the new Hunger Games book a chance. my most anticipated for the year is probably Awakened by A.E. Osworth, described as "A coven of trans witches battles an evil AI in the magical coming-of-middle-age romp about love, loss, drag shows, and late capitalism."
I haven’t looked into what comes out next year but I know I wanna read A Mastery of Monsters by Liselle Sambury. Also you gave me a lot of things to add to my TBR with this video! The speculative and literary sci-fi picks sound great.
I always look forward to your recommendations because I think we have similar-ish taste in books, except that I loved The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes and hated Nettle and Bone 😅
Very interesting video! Thank you for the many recs, I just added some of these to my anticipated releases :) Also, hard agree on Ava Reid, I read A Study In Drowning when it came out because it sounded good and everyone raves about this author but I was so disappointed... I don't really get the hype 😭
SO curious as to your thoughts on A Study in Drowning/Ava Reid’s work in general - I read The Wolf and The Woodsman a couple years ago (their debut I think?) and had a terrible time but I thought it must’ve been a me thing since I only really hear good things on social media about Reid’s books. I tried again with A Study in Drowning earlier this year and I liked it better than The Wolf and The Woodsman but still not quite sure I get the hype
a lot of books I read that aren't my favorite I don't have strong opinions about or I can see some positives, but The Wolf and the Woodsman made me so angry in its badness. a unique experience of badness, to be sure.
I DNF'd Clockwork Boys. Making one of the main characters a hostile misogynist was a choice. Maybe it gets better but when I griped about this in one of my reading groups, none of the many Kingfisher fans there stepped up to say it did. All any of them said was "I probably wouldn't have rec'd that Kingfisher book" like as if they knew it was bad too, lol. On the hand, I loved Witch King, it's been a comfort read for me while I go through cancer treatment (along with the Murderbot books) and I can't wait for the next one. I love that Wells isn't afraid to challenge fantasy readers.
I wish I were watching this on my actual computer so I could more easily type my thoughts at you as you talk but fortunately I will see you in person soon so we can do it that way. But there are so many things here that I am also excited about. Also I read and loved Vampires so I volunteer to be your demonic advanced guard.
How to Lose the Time War... you're not losing anything by not reading it. Just my opinion 😅 Also, Some Desperate Glory... not my cup of tea, although I really was anticipating a great read from all the reviews.
I really enjoyed The Ballad of Song and Snakes but that's mostly due to the stellar audiobook performance, I think. I wasn mt expecting much but I ended up having a "good" time being in the rotten mind of Baby Snow.
i also read Ava Reid once. I read the wolf and the woodsman. Didn't vibe with it but I know her work is beloved by so many. Congrats on the upcoming publication!
Bigotry is a big plot point in all Ava Reid’s books. Misogyny and Antisemitism is a huge part of her first two books. I don’t think bigotry was as well executed in a study in drowning, but it was an intentional part of the world building
Yes, it is purposeful, to a point. Making the FMC as bigoted as she is against the MMC was a strange choice, particularly because it’s not something that is consistently or thoroughly countered.
@ I agree, she definitely didn’t do it as well as her other books. Her other books made it crystal clear bigotry was part of the world. While I enjoy her work, she isn’t great at exploring bigotry subtly that gets her point across.
Mari describing wanting to read the Emily Rath romantasy: "I love mess"
lmao, you know me 😌
your shelves look so good! Love the backlight!
Thank you!! I should film at night more lol
Had to pause to get my pen and paper ready for my 2025 wishlist! Marines recommendations are always a hit!
Sent in a purchase request for The Unmapping into my library! I hope they're interested in adding it to there circulation!!
Thank you so much!!! Requesting from the library is such an awesome way to support ❤❤

cannot thank you enough for introducing me to "sky daddy"! what a premise!!!!

Thank you so much!! I hope you find it as good as it sounds ❤
And I’m really, really going to try to get to it this month!
I really want you to read Lady Macbeth by Ava Reid to shred it to filth 💀😂
I started it and I got like two pages in before I was like, “I am not ready to endure this.”
some of these literary sci-fi sounds so good. thanks for putting them on my radar!
Love that you have such a wide variety of genres and stories that are lesser mentioned!
Something about the line "It's a reimagining of beauty and the beeeeeeas-" Cut off. I just laughed and laughed.

Personally, I'm really excited for Polly Barton's English translation of Hunchback by Saou Ichikawa to be published. 🙂

Yep added Sky Daddy to my tbr so quickly! 😂

"or hate read"
Love it!

I was SO let down. I recorded a rant review when I read it that I never posted, but I will sometime soon.
@@mynameismarinesplease do!

I want to read sunrise on the reaping 😤 I love haymitch 😢

Not just you. Juvenile MC and behaviour, just wasn't for me. Disappointing.
a lot of books I read that aren't my favorite I don't have strong opinions about or I can see some positives, but The Wolf and the Woodsman made me so angry in its badness. a unique experience of badness, to be sure.

Yeah that’s weird because the book also knows this character is a hostile misogynist. It’s kind of the point.
I’m also VERY nervous about sunrise on the reaping 😰
And I actually care about Haymitch, which I have no damns about Snow. Don’t let us down, Suzanne!!!
I wish I were watching this on my actual computer so I could more easily type my thoughts at you as you talk but fortunately I will see you in person soon so we can do it that way. But there are so many things here that I am also excited about.

Gotta add some of these to my list 👀

Honesty if Suzanne Collins wrote a story that didn’t somehow involve a district 12 victor I would be disappointed in her
I really enjoyed The Ballad of Song and Snakes but that's mostly due to the stellar audiobook performance, I think. I wasn mt expecting much but I ended up having a "good" time being in the rotten mind of Baby Snow.
As someone who also can’t do demon possession stuff, I’m rooting for you! 😅
I’m glad I’m not alone! We can be chickens together.
What about Oathbound by Tracy Deonn?
I was so disappointed by book 2, it honestly isn’t ranking high on my list of anticipated titles.
Auto-buying Moreno-Garcia is SO real
hi yes gimme one please haha they sound so good!
i also read Ava Reid once. I read the wolf and the woodsman. Didn't vibe with it but I know her work is beloved by so many. Congrats on the upcoming publication!
I see Sky Daddy in the caption 😂🙌🏻
You already know.

This video was not good for my TBR....
