I've had this set for about 6 months now and I do really like them , I run a small full time cabinet shop, using them to screw in a lot of #6x 2" screws, my 75 year old dad even said it the best drill/driver he's ever used and we've been buying Makita since they were orange.
Still one of the best tool reviewers on youtube, without all the obvious paid advertisements BS that everyone els is on, and the delivery is bar none the best and most digestible, no paid advertisement after taste LOL
I have the 18volt sub compact and love them. Never really disappointed with Makita tools I have owned over the years. Battery life is unreal.
Can you use Makitas other standard 18v batteries on the sub compact 18v?
I love my sub-compact drill/impact driver kit. Perfect size for home use, they get into tight spots. I already have a full size max output Milwaukee drill for work in the automotive field.
These are quality products. One thing thing I noticed is the battery charger has a cooling fan built in!
Milwaukee also has compact drills as well, all brands do. The Makita charger also plays classical tunes.

I have the same set. I beat the shit out of them in snow , rain or whatever. 5 years full time and they dont quit. Batteries and charger are excellent but im gonna get the bigger batteries .

I just picked these up and they're really fun to use. They're light weight and powerful enough for small to medium size jobs. Not having to have 2 different kinds of batteries is a real plus. Another thing worth noting when comparing them to the Milwaukee 12v tools is that the Makita handles are much smaller and more comfortable. The Milwaukees are really thick since they hold the batteries. Something to consider if you have small hands like me.

Makita 18v sub compact is smaller than Milwaukee 12v. Wow. That's impressive.
it is but remember that m12 fuel arent the smallest in their category, but the reason I showed those 12V was because that's all I had on hand for a 12V drill and impact. Compare it to Bosch's latest 12V brushless models and Makita's own 12V CXT and they'll all be comparably small

Not trying to spam your space my friend. Take a look at this old school corded Makita. I have had this tool for 20 years. My dad bought it for me on my 15th birthday. I have put it througj the test of time. Makita Corded Drill 6303h through the test of time.

nice video!!! compact i dont know about that!!! this makita cx200rb is a very nice system i have it and love it. talking about compact the makita if you look at makita impact driver xdt14 its even smaller than makita xdt15! (4-5/8) next to (5-1/4). now that a really a toy..... makita 18v xdt14 impact with a 2amp battery & and only 4-5/8 just one kickass unit. love yr video it so funny with yr little toys!!!!!!!!

I was trying to exchange my new Mikita BL compact driver to a sub-compact, but when I put it next to the sub-compact impact driver, my impact driver is actually short than the sub-compact version, so I kept mine......

Not to worry, it doesn't have music unless you turn that feature on. Out of the box will just beep to let you know when done charging.
@@ToolCraze Yeah I saw a video where if you want to turn that on you have to slide the battery in and out quickly. This is my first ever electric impact driver. I'll be using it for my RC cars mostly. I only used it for like a few minutes to take a wheel off and some hex screws and I already like it way more than my old Makita drill, which has served me well for many years for stuff around the house. Thanks.

So you’re saying the 18volt Makita I just purchased has a similar size and performance of the 12volt? The big convenience here is its on the 18volt platform. I am experiencing immediate buyer’s remorse as I thought I was getting a step in power with lightweight tool. Bummer
The first two sentences in your comment summarizes my review. Reviews such as this one help others make informed buying decisions.
Personally I think 12v tools are great, they are my go to tools as they have plenty of performance for common tasks. And if this 18v set meets your needs what's the problem? Many people like and prefer sub compact tools because of their compact size and lower weight. Of course there's always a trade off. If you ever need better performance there are plenty of options - though bigger. However as with many power tools lately, they are shrinking in size, even the high performance models are far more compact than they were years ago.

I have a current project of making mushroom logs that calls for a stronger drill for the fresh, hardwood logs. I purchased the small Makita for a boost in power. It is the 18v. @@lynnmoss2127 I don't know what mushroom logs are or what types of applications a drill would be needed for in this situation however when you are shopping for a drill, take into account the amount of torque the drill has and compare. The more torque it has, the more powerful it is. Then choose a model with the performance that fits your needs. Hope this helps.
Thank you this helpful! I have a baseline now. The helpful Ace Hardware person told me a higher voltage is what I needed to gage for more power. That’s why I thought the 18v would be more powerful than the the 12v. Now I’m getting somewhere. Is torque rating listed somewhere on the paperwork for this small Makita? I don’t see it
Should be, usually on the box. I also mention the specs in my reviews. Easiest place to find it is in the beginning of each of my videos where I list the main specs for each tool.

What I really need to know is, can I handle the noise in tight situations? Also, the noise in decibels compared to other impact drivers. I'd really like an impact that can switch from impact to drill mode.
Just as loud as regular impacts, just because it's smaller doesn't mean they're quieter. For example, even 12V impacts are just as loud as the regular size 18V models. If you want a quieter impact, try looking into a hydraulic pulse driver which are about half the noise of traditional impacts. toolcraze.net/?s=hydraulic+impact+driver
As regards to an impact that can switch between drilling/impact mode, not sure if you understand how impacts work but they always impact. You can't turn that off and even if you did, the motors they have are too weak to drill or drive without the impacting mechanism doing it's thing. If you mean impact as in driving, while thinking the tool does something different for drilling, that's an incorrect assumption as well. The tool does the same exact process for drilling and driving so in other words, separate modes for drilling and driving are not necessary on impacts. If you're thinking of a torque limiting clutch "driving" mode that comes equipped on drills, that's a different matter, but all that does is limit torque for setting screws flush. You still have to tinker with the settings to find out which torque number works best for each individual screw and material being driven into.
@@ToolCraze Having had a look at someone's slow-mo video it is a very simple mechanism based on the strength and quality of the spring that allows the clutch to slip out of gear. I believe several innovations could supply my needs. Seems strange to me that this unpleasant noise is so unimportant to everyone? My 12v Bosch impact driver remains unused since I first tried it. Why, because the noise is dangerous and totally unacceptable. Especially when working inside an enclosed area or cabinet. Why then are the impact drivers you use so very quiet? You must have turned the volume down to hide the truth about the noise? Why try to conn folks into buying these dangerous tools? Why would you disguise the true noise of these unpleasantly noisy things by making them sound quiet when it is not true? Surely using a normal drill with the usual 'Torque limiting number has always been a faster, far less noisy, less expensive, and has enough power for every type of screw I've ever used, and I'm seventy eight. The invention of impact drivers has a place removing wheel nuts where extreme tightening is required but selling us all another gimmicky toy seems like all you tool happy guys have too much money. To tell a guy like me he could solve his noise problem by buying a new-fangled "Oil dampened tool" that would have cost me a years salary when I was your age seems quite mad! By the way, the impact noise is created after the drive section overcomes the spring tension and slips over the shoulder of the metal clutch and released. Now driven by the motor it THEN spins and in this one, the spring then is also released to assist the impact on the driven section. Which-ever company sold us all this 'Impact Driver' junk should be sued for everything they have made from it. I still think we could be able to set this mechanism to stop slipping so easily by adjusting the spring tension to make it more difficult to slip, which would no doubt require a bigger more expensive motor. Then we have "Oil Dampening"? The expense continues to increase ad-nauseam, without any sane boundary?
@@teknicol it's a fact that's pretty well known by everyone that impacts are loud. I don't need to explain it in every video. And yes I lower the volume because there's too many negative Nancy's on UA-cam that would complain if the volume was all the way up. I understand where you're coming from but really, you should try to learn a bit more about these tools before claiming someone is trying to "hide" something.
If someone tried to sue Makita or any other brand that makes impacts, the court would rule in favor of the tool maker because again, it's a well known fact that so impacts are loud.
If you want a quiet impact model, there are some available. Those are called oil impulse drivers. Check them out, you'll like them. Makita including other brands like Ridgid, Ryobi, Milwaukee and Hitachi make them. I've reviewed some myself if you want to check them out.
.@@ToolCraze I contend there needs to be a warning on these tools and these misleading videos that their noise is dangerous. Therefore a class action is perfectly feasible, in which case this applies to your videos which I believe are dangerously misleading the public. Safety is of paramount importance and you should include a serious warning. You have been warned.
Both of mine blew up - sent back for warranty work - still had problems. Just pushed them too hard I think.

i know this is an old video, but would you say that the compact xdt131's higher torque and rpm significantly over powers the xdt131's higher ipm? I'm just trying to settling on one of them, but i can't. thanks

Not really, they made it very clear that the black sub compact tools were intended for those in the 18v system that wanted the size of a 12 volt but didn't want to jump into 12 volt and juggle two battery platforms. They already have a full line of 12 volt tools so it's not like they're losing a customer if you go to their 12 volt tools. Just more options to choose from.

The new milwaukee 12 v brushless impact driver and drill still have more power than these tools and smaller.
the Makita drill has the same torque on paper as the m12 however the Makita is a bit stronger in real life usage. Haven't tested Milwaukee's latest m12 fuel impact so I can't comment however you're missing the point about these Makita sub compact 18V tools. They are 12V size and weight without having to leave the 18V battery line. All of Makita's regular compact full size 18V drills have more power than Milwaukee's m12 fuel models and so does any other brand including Milwaukee themselves.
Remember the point about these Makita sub compact 18V tools is they are 12V size and weight without having to the leave the 18V battery line. If you want 12V tools, get a 12V tools. If you only have Makita 18V tools but would like a tool the size and weight of 12V but don't want to buy into new batteries and chargers, they offer these sub compact tools. If you want more power than these you get their regular size 18V tools which are a big increase in performance. These are for people that want a small and light 18V tool, thats it.
Tool Craze I am not missing the point. If you have not tried the new MIlwaukee M12 brushless then you cannot compare. I somewhat compared this ti 12v due to Makita claiming 12 volt size and weight on the sub compact. I have used both tools. The both have their ups and downs. Although if you are wanting 12 volt size from an 18 volt drill so be it. Even makitas Brushless 12 volt drill gets annoying. There is a huge gap on the back of the chuck where the clutch meets. Great place for bind up. Anyways as I said I was impressed with the Makita sub compact Impacts torque. However I was not with the drill. Alot of contractors, especialy electricians have gone M12. There is also a huge variety of M12 tools. Now I am not a fanboy of a certain brand. I give respect to any tool where it is deserved. Hands down the triple Hammer 18 V Hitachi brushleas Impact driver is best on market right now for power. The tool is green with Hints of black and named Hitachi. It is not red with hints of black named Milwaukee. It deserves to be recognized. Do I have a prefference of what tool brands I like? Of course, but we will just keep it at the tool is a go or a no. To each their own and have a wonderful day.
Tool Craze Why do I feel like you are taking what I am saying as criticism. I have clearly stated it is all in a matter of opinion on brands and makes. You are comparing these to both 18 v and 12 volt. I have stated the sub compact by Makita I do not like. I said the Makita sub compact Impact is good. You have compared Milwaukee 12 volt to a degree in your video. You are also not reading thoroughly what I wrote. I never said M12 has more tool line up than Makita. I said there is alot out for M12. I get you do not like what I have said.. But do not put words in someones mouth. It seems that Makita is your calling and that's totaly ok, but if you want to do reviews on UA-cam expect people to not always agree. Tool Craze I have heaps of 18 volt Makita brushless tools and love them. Any one with knowledge knows if you have a bunch of Makita batteries stay with that system. I do too for the most part. I own so many tools to the point I have a little of everything. Being said I am about to say the bad word (M12) I ended up with these because my uncle bought them for me for xmas, since I ventured off more into cabnet work now. I can respectfully say If you step into my shop you will find tons of Mechanics tools and probably 80% of my Power tools are Makita. Makita holds a special place to me because my dad always used them and he always bought me Makita. He passed away, so I tend to like Makita. I grew up with it. There is times however Makita, Dewalt or whoever you like releases a tool and it just does not feel like what it should. I have had more luck out of Dewalt grinders than Makita grinders. Alot of the corded Makita drills are the best around. Remember about 15 years ago or so when Makita had those horrible orange batteries that just sucked? I bought Dewalt because the batteries on those Makitas were just so bad. Like I said sometimes shit happens with our favorite brands. I do however have no issues with the new Makita brushless tools, or chainsaw it is great. Just the sub compact drill don't sit with me. Other than that we may be on the same page.
