Stingray was one of the comic strips included in the 'Space Age' comic called Countdown, back in the 60s and 70s when I was a boy. I am sure some examples are online. One of them was a ghost ship story. It was very. very well drawn, faithfully to the series. The series' special effects - model work was directed by Derek Meddings who eventually went onto tackling the effects work on the Bond movies.
Ah, I knew you would like this one! Derek Meddings' model work is as technically superb as ever, especially as water doesn't 'scale' down well. That shot of the galleon rising out of the water and all of the water streaming from the gunports, is *Chef's kiss*. Oh, and his deep, abiding love of pyros...
As an English kid back then! Stingray! Was such an exciting programme to watch! I see in a comment below that they used to get a magazine called countdown? Well in my day it was called TV21 and back then we only had black and White TV! so! the only way to see all the colours of the show! Was to read the then paper? You see it was like receiving the paper that my parents used to get in the morning over breakfast, so I felt like a mini adult back then! Sadly both my parents have passed on, but this and all the other Gerry Andersons TV puppet shows give me found memories of being a kid back on the early sixties! I am so glad you loved that show but Please! Please listen to the music of the show it was such evocative music for that show like all the others! !
I think it's fairly safe to say that every episode is going to have Alexa squeeing & nerding out over nearly every sea-going vessel seen on screen. I am surprised after last week's video, Alexa, that you didn't say anything about Marina sitting in Phone's seat next to Troy!😉
@@simongvs Lady Washington was a revolutionary war period sailing ship. Alexa wrote a book about it. “Lady Washington: Age of Exploration Merchant Vessel”.
@@rondarporpoise3271 I did indeed, although I wrote that just after high school. The project for my undergrad BFA was to do a gallery show based on it. My grad school work was alas unrelated (it was philosophy and religious studies).
@@alexachipman Excellent! That’s clearer than the article I had read. Anyway, you know about sailing ships. You are entitled to nerd and indeed squee about them if you want to. I am likely to get the DVD set of Stingray now. The reaction sessions are very good and provide an authoritative and witty link to distant memories. Apart from the song at the end. I used to leave the room when it started, being a tough little boy. It was “Snap out of it, Tempest, no good will come of this.” The song at the end of Fireball XL5 was much better, spaceman first, girls second (not intended as a spoiler). Your comment that Troy was a nice guy but might not have been commanding officer material was very interesting, as many of us settle for positions lower than, on paper, we might be able to do, but never say why. He’s pushed the envelope and lived up to the uniform, which is all anyone can do.
Hi Alexa! Yeah all of Gerry Anderson 'a shows were financed by Lew Grade and everything he did was done so it could be Sold to us tv networks so everything he was involved with from Stingray onwards was filmed in colour so increase desirability to us tv.
Had the opportunity to see plenty of "Carl" over a week ago when I was driving my father to his hospital appointment, driving for two hours in early morning fog, most of it before dawn, not fun. PS, as it was Irish fog, it's name would be "Cathal" (silent t)
A sunken ship being resurrected then used as a weapon struck me as a classic Mysteron attack. Great special effects considering this was still early Anderson. Is "Cynamon roll" California slang? I've never heard that term used to describe a person before.
If you've not already done it Alexa I highly recommend you try John Carpenters 'The Fog'👍. Also can I recommend the 1979 sci-fi film ‘ The Black Hole’?
The pleasure in your reactions excites me and warms my heart. And when will we be able to buy this Ghost Ship novel youre writing, Alexa? Cant wait for that... Well goes without saying, this episode is one of the Top 5 most popular in my list.
@@alexachipman I'm sure it will be worth waiting for. Hope you will be at my local Waterstones bookshop signing copies on a day not far from now, young lady.

That emerging tall ship scene is my favorite of the series, at least so far!
"Troy is such a cinnamon roll" 😂😂 that's a lovely expression, I've never heard that. I think I relate lol

Thank you! And yes, I have the Stingray music playing when I am on my commute a lot. Yesterday was Space: 1999, though!
@@alexachipman thank you! Well done and 😃
That shot of the ship emerging from the fog is absolutely gorgeous.

Do you mean like Lady Washington, which Alexa wrote about as part of her degree course?
No, I didn’t know Alexa went to university, besides which I have no idea who or what Lady Washington is/was!🤷♂️

I remember this episode always freaked me out as a kid, partly the fog and partly the score.
Oh, and this episode is 60 years old. The year I was born! Incredible. So ahead of its time, like all of Gerry Andersons productions.
I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone call Troy a ‘cinnamon roll’ until now!
lollllllll

I do love the ghost type music Barry Gray composed for this episode.
Impressed by the technical references to the galleon stern - though in terms of the higher/bigger stern, couldn’t help but think of the Kardasians!
If it was The Kardashians they’d be saying ‘Highlier’ and ‘Biglier’😁
Alexa cannot resist the lure of an ancient galleon!
It’s true!

It must be - quite a common phrase to describe people here!
Keep an ear on the outstanding score too!
Think this was the third Stingray episode I ever saw after Oysters and Raptures.
+1 for the Little Shop of Horrors reference.
Great 😊
Love gerry Anderson programs 😊
I'd love to read your ghost ship in space novel! 🙂
I was supposed to be working on my fantasy novel trilogy, but I had some story ideas for this, and started the first draft a few years early 😂
Love Stingray............. Cinnamon roll? 😆
Sweet, lovable character :)

"The Black Hole" is great, loved the robots in that one!
Have you seen the film Doppelganger?
