The variety of styles this band has created masterpieces in is truly astonishing. For the uninitiated, get busy exploring XTC. Your turnips will be mashed,
As a songwriter it has become increasingly hard to write about subjects as most of them have been have been brilliantly covered such as this one. Fantastic song.
It's the creativity, to find the perfect note in every space where you expect a lame drop, they swing you around with multiple different rhymes and all sound amazing!
Fantastic. Those vocals on the outro remind of the song by The Sweet. I think it was 'hell raiser'. Love the lyrics and everything about it. I bought apple Venus vol 1 back in 1999 but for some reason I missed this one. I will buy it now! Thanks for posting this 👍❤️
"Playground (it's a playground) Marked by the masters and bruised by the bullies in the Playground (it's a playground) Never stop rehearsing, rehearsing for the big square world."
The classic rock station in my area only pl.ays the most commonly heard stuff like Sweet Home Alabama, Wish You Were Here, Stairway etc. Youy never get to hear deep cuts like this. Thanks so much for posting!
With its snappy drumming, sharp guitar, brilliant lyrics, and stellar vocals and chorus, a mystery to me why this, one of my all-time fave XTC songs, was never a hit. Pearls before swine, I suppose (the fattest and stinkiest of them being Richard Branson, who "wouldn't even know a diamond if {he} held it in {his} hand").
Great songs, great playing, but it is missing one thing: Dave Gregory. Never thought I'd ever say it, but it's true. His guitar playing grabs you, and his best vehicle ever was XTC. Oh well.
Oh, stop feeling sorry for Andy and XTC. They got caught in the machine, but who won? Hear Dukes of Stratoshpear! And Soul Coal, and Liarbird. I feel sorry for Todd Rundgren frankly; he tried to punch above his weight. Seriously though, who has had a better run? Flaws and all? Melt the guns! -r
Happily, Andy Partridge has been writing songs again! We have recently written 1/2 of my new album together, The Concrete Jangle on Wicked Cool Records. Here's one of the songs: "Fourth Of July" by Steve Conte & Andy Partridge - ua-cam.com/video/G6PB0I5jkLg/v-deo.htmlsi=zaH_607ATTOd3eiG
the late Benjamin Lo-Fi likes XTC, and sometimes draws Andy Partridge's and Colin Moulding's faces into his cheese on toast. And yes, we are still posting up songs by the late Benjamin, so keep looking at our channel for more...
The only problem to this is that EMI routinely goes through and deletes a lot of uploaded XTC songs, Just try to find the Summer's Caudron, If this is done in some sort of copyright, issue thing, why is it so hit and miss? I would think that having these song up on UA-cam expands their listening market.
Andy Partridge is among the best ever singers- Freddy Mercury, Brad Delp, better songwriting than the Beatles/Talking Heads/- equal only to Wire- Music worthy of any baroque master/// to the truly open minded- XTC witll floor you and rock your soul.
I don't find it to be anything but fair at best and I knew it wasn't about drugs. This was recommended to me so I know it wasn't about drugs. And I will never listen to it again. So, no. There are people who don't like this who never expected it to be anything other than music.
That beginning is the definition of XTC…
Drums and Wires
Angular to the hilt 💕
I was brought up on XTC, I'm 18 and they're one of my favourite bands ever.
“Mocked by the masters and bruised by the bullies in the playground, never stop rehearsing, rehearsing for the big square world” just brilliant. 🎶🎸👍
The variety of styles this band has created masterpieces in is truly astonishing. For the uninitiated, get busy exploring XTC. Your turnips will be mashed,
Extremely late to the party but it’s been a blessing to say the least. Music that is too extroverted for the quiet and too introverted for the loud.
Exactly 😢😂🎉@@0rganfarmer
"You may leave school but it never leaves you...." Andy and more of his finest songwriting!!
Simply phenomenal. Reminds me of Skylarking. This album should have sold a billion copies. I worship the ground Andy walks on...
XTC is the most beautiful mistery in music history. Said!
They saved their best album for their coda. Masterpiece from start to finish. Bravo Andy & Colin.
I've left XTC but they've never left me. Great lyrics and a great song by a really great band.
Great xtc. They just swoop in,stun you,and glide out.
They definitely do! Well said mate!
The quality of this song just goes to illustrate how consistently excellent these guys have been throughout the years.
As a songwriter it has become increasingly hard to write about subjects as most of them have been have been brilliantly covered such as this one. Fantastic song.
Pure XTC... Brain Candy and pure ecstasy!
xtc gives me sunshine in my stomach...
It's the creativity, to find the perfect note in every space where you expect a lame drop, they swing you around with multiple different rhymes and all sound amazing!
cant believe how good this sounds the more i hear it.
+Robert Gee thats the REAL magic of XTC ;) (it NEVER stops getting better!)
Best band; this song is epic. This would be the gig opener in my dreams.
Great-as always. My favorite band of all time.
The turn around right before andy's daughter comes in is easily the best moment in the song.
Yes. Along with all the other best moments.
Most underrated band ever.
Really love the drum sound on this tune, great engineering.
The Tubes Prairie Prince on drums & producing with Andy Partridge.Fabulous!
Pop music just doent get much better than this. Thanks for posting!!
Fantastic. Those vocals on the outro remind of the song by The Sweet. I think it was 'hell raiser'. Love the lyrics and everything about it. I bought apple Venus vol 1 back in 1999 but for some reason I missed this one. I will buy it now! Thanks for posting this 👍❤️
I love the lyric "I climb up, spending daylight, slide down bankrupt on the other side."
what a song...the bass work is razor sharp too
This is music
Agreed
"Playground (it's a playground)

Playground (it's a playground)

Brilliant XTC song - the best group of their generation.
This is amazing and so many people missing this fantastic piece god this is sadness
My favourite eighties brit band with Japan.
Some of his guitar riffs are just too good to be true!
I know, I'm absolutely hooked on the guitar parts from this album, especially Man Who Murdered Love and Church of Women.
I have missed this piece of brilliance for so long. My favourite xtc track.
Harry Shearer played this last week on BBC radio 2, just awsome
I'm stupidly happy listening to this song!!!
cant help thinking how much dave would have loved to play on this album, still brilliant though
The classic rock station in my area only pl.ays the most commonly heard stuff like Sweet Home Alabama, Wish You Were Here, Stairway etc. Youy never get to hear deep cuts like this. Thanks so much for posting!
This song does for playgrounds what "Jump" from Mummer does for swimming pools. So charming.
best thing they did- and what a legacy xtc left
Best played quite loud until 3:32..and turn it RIGHT UP......brilliant
It really IS a brilliant turn. And that's Andy.
+Dave Bartholome Blame Andy's wife for throwing away his Valium before a major tour.
+S.A. Hogan Good question. Right up there with why did Dave Gregory leave, and why did Andy and Colin decide to call it quits?
+AthensGuitarLessons Not sure about Dave but the reason for Andy and Colin seems simple enough: an (so far) inability to score a recording contract.
Great songs, great playing, but it is missing one thing: Dave Gregory. Never thought I'd ever say it, but it's true. His guitar playing grabs you, and his best vehicle ever was XTC. Oh well.
HUGE Gregsy fan here. I assume as of this late date you are a fan of Big Big Train? Hope so.
@@j1thom I was interested, and checked it out, but it kinda just sits there, not very lively. This late XTC album has more life.
Perfect English Pop 👍❤
@BillMinworth Pretty close. That special mix of incredibly intricate sound and intellegent lyrics. Best pop band since the Beatles for sure.
great tune....shared to the Netshows Radio "Program 135" Playlist on youtube
What an intro.......Should have been the lead off single !!!

Excellent!
The last hoorah from England's finest. Why go out when the light appeared to be so bright from within?
Friggin' genius.
Thank you.
grandissimi !!!!!
majestic!
'equal only to Wire' - you sir, are a legend.

ABSOLUTELY.
I think I've listened to this song (and CD) 500 times.
Andy's daughter Holly on this one, amazing track.
Intro guitar and overall feel: "Perfection" - Badfinger??
no matter what...I will agree.
Yes!
the late Benjamin Lo-Fi likes XTC, and sometimes draws Andy Partridge's and Colin Moulding's faces into his cheese on toast. And yes, we are still posting up songs by the late Benjamin, so keep looking at our channel for more...
....and your parsnips well and truly buttered.
Andy partridge could give lessons to John Lennon, Paul McC, et al.
Jumping genius.
School is out but never over.......
Does anyone know the guitar /amp combination at the start? What a superb lush sound!
Not a clue about the amp, but I'm betting the guitar is Andy's Ibanez Artist 2619.

quite simply the best thing xtc did. its pop. Their selfish stuff was just too strange

The only people who disliked this are knobheads who clicked on the video thinking it'd be something about the drug ecstasy. Probably.

better than wire anyday yes wire good but only a handful of great songs compared to xtc
