- In this video I review my new dedicated surf fishing rod, the Okuma Rockaway Surf Rod. I'll go over the specs of the rod, the various features and sizes the rod is available in, and why I chose the rod I now have, as well as the way I fish this rod.
Included are links to my other surf fishing videos, if you are new to the channel and have not seen them.
Tips up, tight lines and have fun fishing!

Ive been using this rod for almost 2 years now. The best surf rod I own for whipping.
The butt of the rod is really long because the style of fishing it's designed for. Surf casting you use the but to leverage the torque of the rod for longer casting distance.
I was about to say the same thing. When it comes to surf fishing rods, they have longer but' for leverage "torque" to launch it out there with the off hand. There is a technique to this method. I do wish this rod had double lock for the reel seat though. Great review overall thanks.
Excellent brake down. Definitely interested in this model. Okuma enthusiast right here. I own alot of okuma gear. Great review
Thank you 🤙
Thanks for uploading this review! I’ve been looking to get this rod for a long time specifically for surf perch fishing. I think I’ll purchase it when it’s on sale next here in WA and bring another combo with a shorter butt for mobility. Keep up the great work on the videos!
Thank you 🤙
Great review boss, I’m getting one for myself as well, thanks for the video
Thank you 🤙
Yes, the X-Floc is great for a non-slip surface & feel.
Just got the 10 foot Okuma Rockaway 12lb - 25lb rod, with the Okuma Ra-6000 reel (2020 model) and boy do I love this thing, I can cast out farther than I’ve ever been able to, the rod is super responsive, the reel is so smooth and nice. I’m totally in love with this setup, and the price was too good to pass up! I would recommend this setup 100%
I need to get my hands on one of their surf reels to get a feel for its performance
Is that the MH model? If so, would it work well for surf perch or does it have too much backbone?
This one is the medium action. and it works great for surfperch. I also use for casting big spinners in the bay for salmon, and plunking for rockfish
Hey man great video. Cant wait to get mine when I go and buy it but I cant wait to finally get fishing out in the surf. It's been a goal of mine for a while bit have no got to it yet.
Thank you 🤙. Surf fishing is so fun; I'm sure you'll enjoy it!
White Teflon plumbers tape once, twice wrapped around the treads before tightening down the reel makes for a snug water tight fit and grip. Happy casting.
Excellent suggestion 🤙
Regarding the critiques. I agree on the reel seat and I thought the same about the butt of the rod. After talking to a few people about it they suggested I use the leverage to the advantage on casting so I lowered my hand closer to the rod end and boom I was getting an etrra 10-15yds with same effort. I also started using the long rod butt as leverage on my forearm when I am whipping, jigging. That said I would love it a bit more if it were a few inched shorter. I have the travel version of the rod and the same issues but amazing surf travel rod.
For sure. All in all I'm happy with this as my surf rod, have have been recommending it left and right
As a helpful tip for you. The length of the butt of the rod is for long distance casting. In contrast to what you're saying for surf casting.... It's helpful in both stationary and lure casting applications. In the surf distance is key. If that butt is getting in the way you're casting incorrectly and not getting much distance. Check out some Surf Casting Technique videos on YT. You'll understand immediately. On those M and MH rods with those tips a 3 ounce lure should be able to get you 125-200 Yards properly cast. Double to 3 times your push method of casting. I enjoyed the rest of you're review and am probably going to pick up a few of these for some Pompano and redfish targets coming up in Bama.
💥 yeah, man 🤙. The more I've used it, the more I've found that long butt is helpful for distance, and I've come to love the rod much more
TroutHammer well don’t man! Keep it up! I’m gonna grab one myself!
I think you'll enjoy it 🤙
FWIIW I have the 12" rockaway and never had to retighten the real seat.It may be a factor with some reals but not with mine, not at all.I have a Daiwa BG4500 fwiiw.
Agree and there are waxes that will help with that if it is happening!
The rockaway is a great rod for the price I use the 12ft m/h I bomb 100yrd plus with 3oz weight and I use a 5k stradic and 30lb jbraid grand
Great setup 🤙
I like the review! I'm gonna pick up that rod and reel this weekend if i can find a good deal! What did you pay for that set up? Never surf fished before so I'm taking every bit of advice i can from these videos
Thank you. This combo cost $120 at Sportsman's Warehouse
The longer butt makes it easier to fight fish with the butt to ur hip and hand on reel seat and also improve your cast performance for sure
I came to realize this after about 2 months of use 🤙
Im subscribing bcuz you do a hell of a review throughly throughout the whole video.. I recommend my brother to buy one muahahaha 😂
Thank you so much 🤙
Xfloc is the type of grip on the rod
Bro oceaner rods so underrated and you get way more then what you pay
I’m looking at the 10’ version for Oregon surf perch. I mainly use 2-3oz lead with sand worms tied on. Would you recommend M or MH? I’ve heard it’s a pretty sensitive rod so I’m concerned M is too soft, but MH might be too stiff and I won’t enjoy fighting the perch
I use the medium, and it's definitely not too soft. It also helps you cast, with the rod doing some of the work for you. I personally worry that the medium heavy is too stiff, and I'd lose too many fish on the hook set
I have both the 12 ft heavy and the 11 ft that you have, I prefer the 11 ft the 12 ft is a little top heavy and wears on you more . There's no difference in casting distance with 2 oz but the 12 ft dose handle and cast better with 3 oz or heavier.
I'm thinking about getting the 12', just to get a feel for it
Bi Mart has has the best price on them, you just have to find the Bi Marts that have them.
@@davidroshone8847 yeah, so far every Bi-Mart I've been to has them, and they're $10-$20 less than anywhere else
David Roshone I’m thinking of
Getting the 12 footer I don’t know which one to get, the M or the MH for 1.5 oz lure weights.
which one would u recommend for 1.5 oz lure weights
These are 24 ton carbon rod blanks and very light 10.2 oz on the one you picked up. Also good price at about $110.00 but prices vary. Descent rods for fish in the mid range but from actual experience they will fatigue vs continuous fights with bigger surf fish. If you expect to be hooking a fair number of larger fish from wears early. BUY LAMIGLAS directly from WOODLAND WA, and you will r be a a happy angler. Lamiglas make a Old school (GSB) graphite surf blank which is remake of the old classic and they are insanely good. With a Penn 3 6500 loaded with 15 copolymer you can toss a 2 ounce lure well over 200 yards and have 40lbs of drag. This gives you the power to fish monsters from the surf. The kind of fish that leave your heart pounding and you knees shaking, and eyes wide open with shock . Makes you feel like a kid again wondering with awe what monster will come next but know with confidence you have the right tools to land fish that make lasting memories
Sounds fun 🤙. So far I've landed 2 fish around 2.5lbs, and a double with this rod, and it performed very well. I'm way more satisfied with this rod after using it a lot more
@@TheTroutHammer 3.5 out of 5 is a fair rating for the Rockaway series. I see S.F Bay and nor cal anglers use them pretty frequently on school size striped bass, perch, smaller California halibut from the surf in the 6-10lb range and work fine. Targeting bigger species, more back bone and a heavier tip action is needed this is why we fish Lamiglas surf rods. Value wise Lamiglas last a long long time. Got 25 years on two old school Lamiglas GSB which we figured out made the rods cost $27 a year to use. Bought two new remakes of the same old school (GSB) 11 ft directly from Lamiglas and know they will be around for my kids retirement years. The new (Lamiglas) (GSB) remakes had every detail put into them and was blown away with the mentioned reel , line, and a 2 ounce kastmaster , that it could get tossed nearly two football fields. This gives you the ability to reach spots other anglers cannot thus hit fish that never see lures. Also works as the perfect rod for bait fishing big river species from shore such as Sturgeon .
Lamiglas upfront seems very expensive but in the end found out it was the best deal on rods ever purchased.
Love my 12 foot heavy rockaway! I like the long butt too as it makes it easier to rest on my hip as I’m fishing.
Nice! 🤙
Cody W. Smith what 12 footer do u have and what is oz weight is the sweet spot
Kainalu Berg 1-4 ounce. 3 ounces is the sweet spot for me
Can u put a baitcaster on it and see if line drop beside blank or rubs it up lease
It's a spinning rod, so a casting reel wouldn't work with it
Okuma made a Rockaway reel as well
Yes they did. Should I ever need to replace the Trion, I'll get one
Would the okuma rockaway ml work for throing 1/2 oz jerkbaits
I think so
I'm using the 12" I love it so far. If you use the handle to help cast, you won't hit anything I find I'm kind of using as a lobbing cast. Are you going to be at pks' competition?
I am 😎
leo what 12 footer do u have and what oz lead is the sweet spot?
@@kkainaluu808 the okuma rockaway 12' 1-4 oz, I use 3 oz i feel that gives enough resistance to waves. I feel like 2 oz is to light
can you cast further with a longer rod? or it doesn't matter ?
Yes, length of rod helps greatly with casting distance, especially with heavier weight
M/h is the one you want for the surf much more back bone
For sure.
There is a very easy way to do fg knot. Look up rad reeling fishing. There is a vid on it
BTW the GT KNOT is the STRONGEST KNOT IN THE "WORLD" for joining to Lines to together. I was at the Lab where they tested it.
I just used the FG knot when I had a surf rod that had smaller guides, so it cast through the guides easier
This vs the penn battalion 2 surf rod?
Never used the Penn surf rod, so I don't know.
I'm looking to buy just that rod... That's how I find this one
Nice 🤙
Are those fuji guides and fuji reel seat?
I believe they are
What reel is it paired with?
Pfluger Trion size 40
Would it work for light shore jetty / pier fishing off great lake Michigan, Erie.. ?
Oh, for sure. This rod is rock solid. I actually switched to this rod for my own jetty fishing, and it does great
@@TheTroutHammer thank you ! I need a break from jdm rod! This sounds perfect for me ? We have bass, muskie, pike , salmon , trout here up north so I think a mh would be perfect right , up to 3 oz? Oh I see 8 and 9 foot rockaway too , do you think may be better than 10 foot or just get 10 mh? Tight lines Trouthammer! Greetings from Northern Michigan, blessings!
For ocean fishing (beach and jetty) I say the longer the rod, the better. You'll get more distance on your casts. I have the 11', and in retrospect I wish I went for the full 13'.
BTW, the reel seat issue is an oversight error by manufacturer because it appears my other spinning rods have tightening knob at bottom . What's interesting is that the baitcast rods have it up and I get some play on those so...
@@TheTroutHammer Ok thanks TroutHammer!
Do you still recommend it? Is there any better in that price range? Thanks.
I do, yes. This rod is specifically designed for surf fishing, and where using anything else would work, it wouldn't perform as well, or last as long as this rod. You can usually find these rods for $70 at Bi-Mart (who does regular sales). The other 2 I could recommend would be a 9'+ Okuma Celilo, or a 9'+ Fenwick Eagle
@@TheTroutHammer I don't think we have that store in NYC, but thanks bro, I'll definitely get Rockaway 12"mh. Be safe out there.
@@aramyan3647 you too 🤙
The Rockaway was originally designed for the Oregon Sea Perch Surf Casters. After it's released Okuma offered a new "price point" version called the Nesika Rod. The Nesika has a split grip w/different components compared to the Rock w/the X-Flox handle. It's cheaper then the Rock but not better. So i Surf Cast using the Rock & Spin Cast using the Nesika.
Got 2 stripers( 27" each)already with Rockaway!👍feels good!
I hate p-line tbh. The diameter is huge for the weight and its stiff. Japanese companies have amazing braids. Worth the weight.
Yeah, they really have some of the best fishing lines. I've put the XTB8 braid in a micrometer vs other braids, and it was mostly thinner than other braids, but besides that I've never really had a problem with it 🤙
I disagree but to each his own lol
OSU, yea!
GO BEAVS!
With shorter butt u won’t ba able to cast long enough , overhead , hatteras , otg n pend. All very much dependable upon good length for rod’s butt.
Future customers okuma doesn't hardly have anything in stock
Dang 😲
I'm skeptical of a surf rod review from a guy that doesn't know how to cast a surf rod. 🤔 You've never wondered why every single surf rod has a very long handle?
I have since learned why
Yeeha
The length of the butt section of that Rod has nothing to do with setting the hook and has everything to do with casting !
I want to be, trouthammer
I want you to call my name
I want to be trouthammer
That's awesome 😂
@@TheTroutHammer please tele that is what you had in mind or is this an accidental Peter Gabriel moment.
@@willgrant719 I actually never thought of that until now
TroutHammer then that begs the question why are you trouthammer.
