Always blame Simic lmao
A+
Just wait. One of the Frogs is gonna be absolutely busted.

I would love a “best possible pauper cards from bloomburrow” video.
I’ve heard Carrot Cake may be the best card for the format, but Barkform Harvester could give Moggwarts another out for victory.
Basically all the commons.
@@LucasSkyCarvalho There wasn’t anything too noteworthy for Pauper this go around. Banishing Light getting downshifted is not going to impact the format much since Journey To Nowhere is already being played in the format, and there are other removal options for artifacts and enchantments at less than three mana.
Cauldron Familiar is literally the cat who came back. You thought he was a goner, but the cat came back the very next day.
Theory of a dead cat?
Just couldn't stay away?
Wow, that's a deep cut.
I'm so hyped for my mono white humans deck to get double invalidated by another combo that requires interaction to play around.
Ygra also has a combo with experimental confectioner and sac outlet. And dont forget with scavenger's talent we can mill our oponent and reanimate Ygra :D
Also with Carmelia, the Seedmiser and a sac outlet, and those two are the same set.
Bloomburrow is a machine that turns cats into elemental cats
Ygra also goes infinite with any free sac outlet + either Camellia or Experimental Confectioner!
The Prof: "I can't wait to play with these cards in Pioneer!"
Standard: "Am I a joke to you?"
I love that i hear the titles in his voice so sarcastically
The main difference from the vein ripper example is that, at the very least ygra makes "all" other creatures food, not just your own if the wording is what I think it is.
In practice then it's the same as Vein Ripper. It's basically Ward - Sacrifice a creature. But just better in terms of other abilities.
@@t.yop9it's not exactly the same as Vein Ripper. For example, in a mirror match, you will actually have food to sac to pay for the Ward cost. You don't need to worry about using one of your creatures. Additionally, it will be interesting to see if the Ygra combo takes off, if other food based strategies could work, thus making Ygra's Ward not quite as good as Vein Ripper.
@@Xoulrath_ or... in the *literal* mirror... if you play your ygra, you opponent might win with their own cat combo... it doesn't matter who's side of the battlefield she's on
@@The_Murder_Party if you're bad I guess.
@@Xoulrath_ I mean yeah, but it means there's a lot of dead cards- it's an instant speed combo right? so if you cast the cat, it turns into a old west staredown, because the person who activates the combo (reaches for the gun) first looses (barring interaction that stops it of some kind)
I like how there's a difference between what Prof says the mana cost of the card is, and how many fingers he holds up.
I love these videos. It's not just commander but the other formats that don't really see much love. Also I'm sure I'll love the Behind the Campus video that I'm sure you'll soon create!
I havent played since Theros and your channel has been a great help getting familiar with the game again. Thank you! I see new keywords everyday. Now i have to look up Ward 😅
i’m a returned older player. played against ward on Sunday. i had to pay two mana every time i attacked or targeted my opponent.
@@oakherder17 This only should happen if you target the specific creature with ward, as ward is an ability for a creature not for the player. At least I can't think of any card giving a player ward.
Finally. Golgari Food is broken.
This is everything I wanted out of eldraine.
Tastey mushrooms
There's a "weird that it happened twice" energy about combos involving infinite cats breaking a format.
Into the Flood Maw is a crazy card for vintage
Prowling Serpopard is also a card. Gloomshrieker gives some recursion which we see in amalia, we have then fleece mane lion Kutzil Flanker and bunch more. Abzan Cats could be a serious deck with a half decent gameplan that can win out of nowhere.
My daughter used Serpopard as a SB counter against counters in her Modern snake deck. It's not tribal or anything, it just so happens that all of the Sultai colors have great snakes that work for her midrange plan. She finally got a Cavern of Souls, but her mana base is really tight, so she can only safely run one copy. So the Serpopard remains in the SB as a just in case. 😂
I don't know anything about modern or Pioneer, but I just wanna play with that fantastic Mr. Foxglove. :D
I wasn't expecting the helix sleep matress plug. Lol
That Ygra deck seems really fun, I might try out playing a bit of Pioneer
This channel literally has some of the best sponsors I've seen on UA-cam.
Ygra in Commander. Turn all lands into creatures, then cast Tranquility
Wrong boardwipe.
@@mawillix2018 Whoops, you're right. Was the one at the top of my head though Bane of Progress is a higher cost than I was thinking for.
@@dennisyoung6122 You could use something like Seeds of Innocence.
Instead of going all in with the Ygra combo you could use it as a 1 or 2 of in the Insidious Roots shell that already runs Familiars / Oven. It gives Insidious Roots a turn 3 kill if you can mill 2 Familiar and have a Squirming Emergence.
Yeah - a modified/similar version of roots/caludron has already topped several times. My build is just golgari midrange with the loop in it as 'if i have it then cool' kind of thing. not trying to 'turbo' into it. But at my LGS almost EVERY deck maindecks gy hate so i think that build (mill gy to get ygra loop asap) would fail hard.
I'm most excited to play with Commons and Frogs in Bloomburrow
That’s amazing, it turns your creatures into counterspells.
I love camallia/ygra combo so much.
Rottenmouth Viper is a MUSssssst for your Kassssssetto deck ! 🤘🦁🤘
Ofc when WOTC’s working like a monkey typing infinitely they’re bound to make a masterpiece and I can’t lie they got me hooked. Mainly because Otter tribal is now an option.
Lol great
Found the deck that's going to get me into pioneer! Freaking love cats and the fact I can just combo off with them very excited!! But just another expensive deck to add to my $600 EDH deck on building lmaoooo
I love this little intro jingle so much. It reminds me of old education video openings for whatever weird subject our substitute was making us watch a video for instead of teaching haha.
I just love how cute this set is. I hope someday I can dig into my collection and make time to play competitively, but I don’t know if it’ll ever happen for me. 😢❤
Eluge, Gev, and Flubs may just be my favorite creatures ever
(td;dr edit) 32 stormsplitters on turn 5. Heartfire Hero can do 15 damage on turn 2 in standard.
My Favorite two cards that I'd love to try and build for are Stormsplitter and Hearfire Hero. The latter being my better favorite.
Stormsplitter does cost 4 mana which is a pretty big investment for something like the prowess deck, but there are other blitz style decks out there. If you cast it turn 4 and it survives to turn 5, casting 5 one mana instant/sorceries gets you 32 hasty copies of it! on top of likely having other prowess type creatures in play. Would be a blast to try and get that to happen.
Heartfire hero would be a great addition to a similar style deck but for a different reason. When it gets targeted by something it gets a +1/+1 counter, but only once per turn (sad). but it also gets to deal damage equal to its power to each opponent when it dies. So there are some standard decks that run Callous Sell-Sword. Once youre done pumping the mouse and hitting for a lot, you can fling it to deal damage to face for 1 more mana. AND THEN the mouse's ability trigger, dealing damage equal to 3x its power to an opponent! It starts with one power. But even with a single Monstrous Rage, the mouse is hitting for 5 on turn two, then burn together for 5 more, then sac the mouse for 15 damage on turn TWO in standard!
running armored scrapegorgers for ramp will help you counter the mirror too, get rid of those cats in the graveyard....
"Ygra costs FIVE mana!!!" as he holds up 4 fingers 😂😝
Pioneer players are allowed to play removal that targets the cat. Bone splinters, victim of night, the non-pirate one, even murder!
They really do like printing cards that Red removal can't realistically deal with, without in this case, four for oneing themselves.
While I'm not sure if Ygra will be good enough in Pioneer. Supposedly there's an infinite combo with it in Standard with Camellia that goes infinite that might be playable in Standard.
Authority of the Consuls is a must have in the SB in the pioneer format IMO. This combo reinforces this stance.
card is so good ... have such a boner for that, blind obedience, and high noon - even though i've never used them outside of EDH
You just get milled out instead with the class
Winning on curve is very good.
I kinda wonder how hard beeg cat is to splash in Rakdos Aristocats
Maybe you really want to be in green for mana dorks to accelerate into Ygra
Honestly though, I think it's probably worth it to at least splash for mayhem devil in any deck with cat combo
Mayhem devil is just that good
I'd splash red for mayhem (and maybe oni cult) instead of splashing green for Ygra. Green gives you access to the goose and better ramp/fixing
Or just play Jund Aristocrats
And here I was just imagining sunspine lynx in commander along with price of progress and some kind of damage multiplier. It gets even spicier if you run it in a blinktheme alongside blue to get the cat combo with displacer kitten.
Insidious Roots will also give you infinite alternate creatures to use since it will make one every time the Cauldron Familiar leaves the graveyard.
I'm going to use the Ygra + Cauldron Familiar combo in Explorer as an excuse to try a fallback plan of Ygra + Mechtitan Core to make a Food Megazord. MCTITAN IS A GO
YESSSS IVE BEEN WAITING FOR A FUN DECK LIKE THIS!!!! YIPPPIEEEEE
Fun? You mean broken strong easy combo? Why not just play nadu in modern. Thousands of people are doing it lol
@stompingpeak2043 everyone has their own idea of fun.
Ever met the players that like locking down a game state to be nothing but "Pass." "Pass." "Pass." "Die to deck out."
@@wickederebus I feel it but some of these super strong and easy combos fall in the same realm. They are basically a game with 30 fetch cards and you die in a handful of turns. Where is basically unavoidable unless you kill them beforeturn 5 or 6. I get it if you're playing mtg arena or some comp event. Like I love playing the poison mite deck in ladder but it's scummy as hell. Sure it's more difficult than the "play one card and win the game" decks but still.
@@stompingpeak2043 I'll list some of my decks for EDH and you can try to find the through line.
Caesar, Legions Emperor with a pile of Aristocrats to burn with ETB and Death triggers.
Hakbal with more Merfolk, ramp, and a Roaming Throne to double the triggers.
The Esper dnd precon with more ways to trigger the "once per turn on death, do a thing"
Xyris, with a pile of combat tricks and protection instants.
Gerrard, with a pile of artifacts and 6+ mana board wipes to kill my artifacts and Gerrard.
Zethi, with a pile of Instants, and no counterspells.
The Selesnya starter precon with upgrades.
Dina, soul steeper, as a Pauper EDH life gain and drain deck.
@@wickederebus I'm just saying the one or two card combo decks are busted lol. Idc if you use them. I just ask why
Murders was a really good draft format. Every colour pair was at least playable, you could play aggro, midrange and control. Not many win on the spot bombs. Cloak added a unique mini game of quessing.
Rotten Mouth Viper will definitely see play in Commander. Especially in token decks since you can just create a bunch of tokens and then sacrifice 4 of them to make Viper a one drop.
8:44 - Elemental cats? Sounds like Ikoria and its mish-mash of creature types all over again!
Or, y'know... an elemental cat factory...?
I know I thought Ikoria too or I don't know M20
I love that the +1/+1 changed Ygra pronouns to BIG/CAT, because that's what personnal growth do to you some times
The REAL reason why Vein Ripper sees play in pionner is thanks to Sorin that force him in board on T3 Ygra has the same flaw of every other graveyard strategy " graveyard hate " (unlike Amalia that gains a new way to restart the combo )
I think forage may actually be the most powerful mechanic in this set that might completely break insidious roots decks in standard. Insidious roots, for those that are not aware is a 2 mana golgari enchantment that creates a 0/1 plant token and puts 1/1 counters on all plants you control every time one or more creature cards leave your graveyard. The game plan of insideous roots decks is to kill yourself and play cheap creatures from your graveyard. It doesn’t matter where the creatures go as long as they leave the graveyard. They generally can go to one of three places. Exile, your hand or the battlefield. Usually the best card for triggering this is undead butler, which kills you for 3 on etb and exiles himself from your graveyard after he dies to bring a creature from the graveyard to your hand. This is 2 triggers though. Forage on the other hand turns that cost of exiling three cards from your graveyard into three potential roots triggers simply as a side effect of doing whatever powerful ability you already want to do. The squirrel that taps to let you play creatures from your graveyard until end of turn is absolutely nuts with insidious roots. If you play snarling foreground from your graveyard, you can trigger roots 4 times which allows you to surveil 4 times and potentially put another 4 creatures into your graveyard. You already just generated a 4/5,3/4,2/3, and a 1/2 for 1 mana. This can be as early as turn 3 with the right set-up. Usually this deck is a lot slower at generating this kind of value, but with forage, you can hit the combo just way faster. The plant tokens tap for mana too, as long as the enchantment is around. This puts your opponent in a strange position where they either go for removing your enchantment or building their board to match you. This kind of board presence is so daunting on turn 3 in standard that it’s generally unplayable for the opponents.
My current roots deck got me to mythic on arena this season easily and contains no cards above uncommon rarity (except lands and I did eventually add two copies of tyvar after I got to mythic). With just a couple uncommon from bloomburrow it’s going to be fast enough to make boros convoke look like a complete joke. I think the forage cards are simply going to be the strongest cards in this set for me and my play style.
Mill not kill. Typo
Also as a side note, any cards that allow you to discard a card as a cost can also help you get your 4 creatures into the graveyard for this effect. Getting to do something powerful while choosing which cards you want to discard is fantastic. Playing the squirrel on turn two can also disguise your intentions and allow you to pop off on turn 3 harder. This also doesn’t allow your opponent an opportunity to remove insidious roots. Even if they target it next turn you can tap your squirrel at instant speed and proc the 4 triggers before the removal spell resolves. Currently the only way to do something like this is to use a sacrifice spell like corrupted conviction to sacrifice undead butler for 2 triggers. I cannot emphasize just how big of a difference it is to get 4 triggers instead of 2. Instead of getting a total of 2 creatures with combined attack of 3 and toughness of 5, you get 4 creatures with combined attack of 10 and toughness of 14.
Y'know, a Jund Sacrifice deck with the Ygra combo in the back pocket might not be a bad idea. Not sure though, haven't kept up with Pioneer.
I hope Igra ends up beeing a niche in Modern, would like to make a golgari/jund food combo
Surprised the Prof didn’t make any Warrior Cats jokes, it’s a book series about a bunch of cats organised into elemental themed tribes, it’s… very relevant!
Glad for a video on pioneer!
the biggest issue with Ygra is finding the other two cats. Ygra also costing 5 doesn't help you Collected Company for the win like it does in Amalia...
I think Golgari Food is definitely going to be a powerful midrange style deck and I think you'd run a copy of Ygra in it, but I can't see it being the primary win condition when Vamps and Amalia are just that much faster.
Don’t forget that this is also in Explorer as well
It would be really interesting to see your thoughts on Star Wars: Unlimited and especially their format "Twin Suns" in comparison to commander.
Still howling at that “elemental cat factory” line.
I can't wait for Yagra tbh especially in a fun squirrel token gen deck with the seedmiser sac a squirrel food get a squirrel food tocken rinse repeat
"But it costs 5 mana!" I still play Izzet Creativity and usually have around a 50% winrate
Prof, would love to see you shuffle up and play or build a Sokrates dec. Who doesn’t love being political when playing commander.
Elemental Cat Factory is a sick band name
Standard player still trying to make a Simic Rotpriest work against agro: very excited for Mockingbird in lieu of the marches.
Not gonna lie, I'm a little excited for Rottenmouth Viper for Henzie commander lists.
This video reminded me, I'm a little surprised that Amalia decks are still kicking in pioneer, especially with their reputation for going infinite. Wasn't it the format where wotc was determined to not let infinite combos be viable?
This card's combo's also impact Brawl really hard.
Vein Ripper actually completely shuts down the new combo, because of its death trigger.
You buy your first mattress based on cost. You buy your second mattress based on comfort. You cannot put a price on good sleep.
Well this is looking like my Pioneer deck of choice next year
Honestly, I might build this on arena with Grief and Assemble the Team. I may as well also throw in a demonic tutor
This set gives me Eldraine push the new plane so people like it vibes
That Ward cost gave me whiplash.
I think people are sleeping on Hired Claw. I think it has a good shot at popping up in red decks in the format
A staple for Standard.
this is why i advocate for the x3 rule any infinite combo is limited to 3x per turn
Ew
Alright then, by that same knowledge, you should advocate for spellslinger decks to cast less than three spells a turn, and creature decks to attack with less than three a turn
And this is why you're not a game designer.
ALL OF THE OTTERS!!!!
Thanks for also covering Pioneer. I love the format and I think it’s a format that will only get better as time goes on.
I agree, as long as they keep supporting it and keeping it fresh with a good banlist, and never print horizon sets for it
Fun fact it’s possible to have 9 mana usable mana turn 3 in pioneer
You’ll need
Leyline of the guild pact
Llanowar elf
3 lands 1 white 1 green 1 any
Faeburrow
That means that I now can insta win turn 3 yay
So, imma go on a limb and guess that cards that either prevent combat damage, skips the combat phase, or just cards that act like tif’s protection. I mean inkshield would be potentially the best card against this kinda combo. Especially when the cat has buffs and 10^500 power.
"EGRA COSTS 5 MANA" *prof holds up 4* hahaha
Yes, but it's green. Could come out turn 3
Hey, if it breaks up the Vampire/Amalia/Control meta then I’m just a little excited lol
Oh wait god damn it, its cat oven. Cat oven sucks lol.
There's already a dirt cheap 2x "3 mana cost card" combo that does this.
The cat, with the new green/black squirrel and alter...let you fill in the blanks.
The Cauldron Familiar has the payment to sacrifice a food to bring it back to play. So you don't use the food token's payment of 2 mana.
@@Throthgars Think of Camellia and Ashod Alter , you sac a squrrial to the alter to get mana, sense it is a food it creates another squrrial, keep doing that to gather mana to turn around and start second effect for forage to pump all your squrrials before swinging. Still can have the Cauldron Familiar combo in it, but this might be good for another Win con with this kitty.
Cats always return because of the food :D
I have a feeling that slice from shadows might make an appearance since it cant be countered
My only concern with the cat is that cord of calling is legal in pioneer
what about hazel brewmaster? You can transform all your foods in spore frog or selfless spirit. And infinite mana with devoted druid
Infamous Cruelclaw strikes me as in interesting option.... or at least it would if pioneer had some better madness cards or something like vengevine
8:40
This must be end result of cat/oven. Ovened cat.
Modern Samwise infinite just got a new piece!
I wonder if wandering empires would work to interrupt the combo by exiling one of the caldron cats?
The Cat combo should be called the catabliusm combo or cat food combo
In other words start putting graf digger's cage back in the sideboard
Im using Yngra combo right now, cuz the deck is 60 card is kinda annoying to make it work... but when works is insane lol
I like that tie.
What a fun and scary card, gameplay and flavor wise.
Correction: Ygra does not kill your Amalia Combo opponent with infinite damage, because they Amalia players wins with Aetherflux Reservoir before you get your turn. The Ygra Combo is more resilient, but 1-2 turns slower.
First Eldrain fleshbacks...
