I just learned how to make "Hunan sliced salted chilis", and this looks as if it could be used the same way. The sliced chilis are used in steamed dishes - the one I've tried is "chicken steamed with Hunan chilis", and it has a nice spicy flavor, but also a haunting sort of earthy almost-smoky flavor. What did you put in the peppers besides salt?
