I go hiking and backpacking a lot where I stay out in the woods for multiple days with no power. I love having a small handheld with me while sitting around camp or in my tent at night. I bring a small charger I use while hiking to keep the handheld topped off. These things are great to get my nerd fix in while getting outdoors.

I can stick it in my purse, the battery lasts for quite a while before I need to charge it, and at SFO I was actually streaming games! I bought a super low profile plug with a usb C outlet and I can pretty much pack my bigger handhelds until I actually get on the plane. We actually had a situation where we had to get on a later flight due to an injury (long story, injured party is totally fine and was cleared to fly) and that RP3+ pretty much made 6-7 hours fly by.
The deck is all in one, that's what's great about it, all you need on a trip is a deck. But, having a smaller system for retro stuff would be good as well to save battery, or play while charging deck.

For me, Steam Deck for daily driver when I have easy access to an outlet for sure. Too great for modern games and perfect for emulating the stronger games like ps2 and up. My pocket retro is the RG353P I recently got. It's perfect for my ps1 and down itch and great for lines and waiting rooms. Got tired of emulators on my phone cause I prefer buttons over touchscreen.

I was a member of Uncle Sam's Canoe Club from 1979 to 1985 and know that a 7 day cruise would be a sea sick extravaganza. I would usually take 3 weeks to get my sea-legs. I had a similar size hand bag for my Olympus ON2 camera and zoom lens and other necessitates when doing my Med/IO tours and can say it is just the right size to carry along on the tour bus. It looks my robust than mine which broke in about a year. The only computer game that I remember playing was on a shipmates Timex -1000 which was a basic typed in game from a magazine. I wish that could remember what it was called. Village raider something? I glad you enjoyed your cruise , have a nice week.
I love it when i posted my pics on a cruise in the community some people clowned me. but my wife and i had a ball and played some games with crew members and some other cruisers. congrats!
This was great video and very informative, especially for parents, when travelling. You review videos have given me a lot of Christmas ideas as well... Keep up the good work
I've done the same cruise Russ! I was stationed on Oahu from 2015-2018. My favorite Island to visit was Kauai. I wish the steam deck would have existed back then!
Just saying, love the content as a new subscriber. YES, be a local hero and show figuring out the savestate transfers. YES, love the honest reality relating to a real vacation with/visiting fam/friends and downtime. And yes, I agree now with myself much more, and you, independent systems for different situations is a worthwhile consideration, as I adore the Deck as the all-in-one but it is by no means "pocketable". And honestly maybe not the best choice for just a few quick minutes gaming. Thank you for sharing how you share your time with gaming and family. Your example is a very positive one in the gaming community as a whole friend.
We are a geeky family. We’re headed out on a family vacation, and taking two Miyoo Mini Pluses and a Miyoo Mini v2. Our son is 18 and starting to get into the retro games my husband and I grew up with in the 80s and 90s, which is pretty cool. We’re Army, and I wish these had been around back in the 90s, but I had a Game Boy then.
Cruise food is the best. 😍 I brought my switch on my cruise to Mexico and didn’t end up playing it 😂 our wait times were short enough to be ok plus we were out seeing the sights so by the time we got back I was tired.
Shucks you came to Maui?! I wish I could have met you in person. I really enjoy your content and I think what you do is really great. Keep up the good work! 🙏
I don't travel enough but if I go anywhere I like having an all in one device one I can modern game on or retro so I just always want my steam deck with me I love the steam deck so much
Yea. The Deck is the one. I have sssooooo many of the other Amberic, Shmabernic devices and I like em but the Deck..? The roms are actually playable on there, PLUS PC games. Its HUGE etc but If Im on holiday..Im gonna use it inn the eve, not whilst Im out with my family! DECK FOREVER (just make a smaller version Gabe!)
I recently came back from the Bahamas on a Royal Caribbean cruise, took the steam deck, nintendo switch lite and ipads , came in handy on the flight but i didnt play much on the cruise. there is some downtime but i found myself and family napping during it, i mostly played wordscapes on my ipad.
I've just done a 7 day cruise of Dubai and the Emirates. Took Steam Deck and RG35xx but Steam Deck was used nearly daily and Anbernic not turned on. Also have the Tomtoc case which is great for travelling and whipping out on the 6 hours flight.
How timely. I’m going on my first Royal Caribbean in two weeks. Naturally, priority went to which device im taking along. I decided on the Steam Deck, Switch OLED and Miyoo Mini (OG baby). I also taking my Nreal Air sunglasses for the Steam Deck. Can’t wait to be called a 40 something manchild by everyone playing solitaire on their phones.
My dad refused to go on cruise ships for the longest time because of his service in the Navy. Turns out once we forced him on one, he loved it too haha
Me and my wife work opposite shifts due to our kids ages at the moment. The rp2+ stays at home with whoever is home and the rp3+ goes to work with whoever is going to work.
I took my steam deck on a work trip recently as a laptop replacement, and my RG35XX for use on the plane and the 4 hour layover in the hell hole that is LAX.
I do a lot of car traveling, and for some reason the steam deck, and switch just felt to much of a chore to play, what I’ve been using is the psp” my issue with that was I needed extra batteries or a way to plug it in constantly. What has replaced my psp for me completely is the retroid pocket 3+.
Great video as always, Russ. I agree with you 100% about keeping a beefy system like the deck and a smaller system to compliment it. I recently went on a trip to New York and brought my deck and the RG351M. I'm planning on going on a cruise as well later this year and I'm looking forward to running the same set up, or upgrading from the 351 if something catches my eye between now and then.
Did you think about bring the Steam Deck dock to plug into the TV in the cabin room? I am going on a cruise this December in the Caribbean and I have an ayaneo Geek and Miyoo Mini, so this video is right up my alley. I think im going to bring the dock though to plug into the tv in the cabin
The TV in our cabin was very small, maybe 18" altogether, so not something I would want to dock. I had the hookups with me if I had wanted to plug it in, but I found it was much more comfortable to play it in handheld mode.
For the longest time I lugged my 3DSXL with me on many of my travels. Especially because of the form factor and the clamshell configuration being quite sturdy. With my Vita, Switch or SteamDeck I seem to be more fussy about being careful with the devices.
I have just gotten the s23ultra and having so much fun with emulation and everything in between. I am about to order the gamesir x2 pro.. it just blows me away that I have a gamecube/ps2 in my pocket at all times... all of this is thanks to you Taki and a few other UA-camrs, thanks for everything keep it up!
I've been enjoying that aspect of my Sony Xperia 1 III, for a couple of years, now. I'm thinking of picking up a gamevice flex for the 3.5mm jack(I have a Kishi, but I don't like wireless and don't want to play without sound and I have to use my iems in shared space). I've been trying to find the s right angle adapter, I've seen Taki use, which would let me use the phone's headphone jack, in something like the gamesir, but haven't found that rectangular flat right angle adapter yet.
I love my Steam Deck but it's very much a sofa device for me. I have a 353M which goes absolutely everywhere with me, even in the standard case it's pretty much pocketable, and playing Mega Drive games (as I usually do) the battery life is immense.
Thanks for your service Russ. I did 4 years, 1 westpac and 1 crackpac. I wished there was a steam deck or any emulation device during that time. It wouldve made deployment so much better. Yeah, i had the same perspective in doing cruises as well. took me 15 years to go on my 1st one after my last command.
I travel 15 days out of the month. Different hotel room every night. For gaming, I have my steam deck and my 3DS. The 3DS is great, cuz it'll fit in my pocket and I can pull it out for 10-15 minutes at a time. The steam deck comes out if I've got a long layover in an airport, or I'm sitting in the back of an airplane, and absolutely when I get to the hotel.
*Retro* game corps; have not beaten the most classic platforms, and some of the golden standard of RPG on the retro library. EFFING LOVE IT. It's me. I am him. I love my retro games. Have not completed one since I actually had a SNES or GBC when I was a literal child.
I went to Jamaica 2 weeks ago on a family vacation and only took my most inexpensive devices. RG503 for my son (with movies too) and the RG351V for me.
Awesome video! In Octopath II you’ll be able to experience the stories of all 8 characters as you meet them, the main thing that matters when picking a character in the start is that you can’t remove the very first character from your party until you’ve completed the story.
I'm still so torn on the Anbernic or Mini Plus. I like the features on the Miyoo plus, but I love that white transparent shell on the XX. either way, having a small gameboy-like device on a trip like this sounds so appealing. just like the good old days!
I think you over thought Octopath. You absolutely don’t miss out on anything with your choices, as you experience all story lines no matter who you start with. I wasn’t a big fan of the first, but 2 is def a must play, as the stories are much more interesting. You should give it another chance.
Hey Russ, thanks for the amazing videos! I am very similar to you in that i recently traveled with a steam deck and my smaller RG350. I found I used the 350 more due to its smaller size and convenience, however the small screen is a pain, also the fact the dead is low on my unit isn't too great in the hand. Im considering upgrading the RG350 to the RG35XX or the Milo mini plus. Have to say I prefer the mini plus's screen looking full width, and the purple colour is really nice, but I just updated the OS to the Adam image on the RG350, and love the way it looks. Is it possible to use the box art I scrapped in my current ROM folders with Garlic OS? Thanks for taking the time to read my comment man!!
The official anbernic rg35xx case under the "new arrivals" tab is their best yet imo. That Eva foam feel and actually shaped to the back of the device, with the branded anbernic zipper pull. Definitely worth the price.
for me it’s always been the vita, weather it was when i first got it as a kid playing minecraft on the long car journeys, when i got a bit older playing it on a night in the hotel for a bit whilst i wait for my family to get done with the bathroom so i can get a shower etc, or more recently now that i’m an adult just playing it in bed whilst i recover somewhat from a hangover 💀💀 it’s very good for me because it’s my main handheld, the battery life is great, it’s small and it uses the same charger as my power bank so i don’t have to bring an extra charger. In fact it’s gotten to the point now where the vita is basically my only handheld since i love the game selection and it runs pretty much all the systems i want to besides the saturn. Very good video :)
You really need to setup some savegame synchronisation across your devices. I ended up spending some work getting into „syncthing“. It was well worth the time spent! Definitely more advanced stuff, though
I'm not sure if I'm alone but I feel like the Steam Deck is just too big to be practical outside of my house, The Miyoo or other smaller handheld makes a lot more sense because it can easily be slipped in and out of my pocket in literally a second but with the Deck I gotta bring an entire case and it requires a backpack or something else to carry it in, I dont know what scenario that would allow me to use the Deck anywhere without it being an inconvenience. This is the reason that my Miyoo mini is always in my pocket wherever I go because its portability is what makes it so great and I feel like I can be just as entertained by my massive 6000+ library of retro games on the Miyoo just as I can with my steam library on the deck. Steam Deck makes more sense around the house or when I wanna just play my steam games on my front porch on a nice day or on the couch when I dont wanna be slouched in my office chair.
This is a cool, real-life example. I enjoy these videos, I often see people post about bringing devices on trips, and the comments are rude and yell at them for playing games while on a trip. It's cool to just be honest about it and mention what works best to pull out and play during free time.
ikr, family TRIP means you HAVE TO bring 5 handhelds with you! its RUDE to enjoy sighseeing or just spend your precious time for family quality time in such occasion. family TRIP means MORE time for handheld GAMING, right clownie?
@VectpoliHomebrew if youre blabbering about specific chaynese retro knockoff, I've just upgraded my V90 to RG35xx. Really appreciate your fairy tale though. having a handheld for killing time on summer vacation IN YOUR GRANDMA's basement is NORMAL. but if you bring 5! 5! 5! handhelds! for hiking or camping or on FAMILY FAMILY FAMILY trip, theres must be something wrong with you man. See the big difference, clowney? :)
I take my onexplayer mini, 20K mah 65w power bank , soundcore vr p10 2.4ghz earbuds, folding keyboard/mouse ,and 65w wall charger inside of slim hardshell sling bag to keep everything protected.
I already think it’s a hassle to take out my OLED switch on the go, how much more for the chunkier and heavier Steam Deck? It stays at home. I’d rather bring a smaller retro handheld that doesn’t take too much space in my luggage. When you go travelling, every gram and every milimeter counts. I’ve been travelling a lot so I already know more of this stuff
Golden Sun? Good choice!!! Waaaayy more fun than FF on a handheld. It's my favorite RPG of that era. PS. You look pretty young for having completed almost 23 years in the NAVY, but maybe you got lucky with your commands and had little stress to worry about iuno....
Retro handhelds are cool and all, but can you start a travel channel? I want to see a vlog where the tour guide asks you "Do you want to see the volcano Kilauea up close?" and you're like "Yeah man, I wanna do it."
I don't have kids, so my vacation is usually doing a lot of stuff. I bring my trimui s. Bigger handhelds doesn't make sense, when I use it only for a few hours across whole vacation.
I drive a tanker truck for a living and I get about a half an hour of down time per stop, and so for that used case I find that devices like my 2DS XL, Vita, retro pocket 3 + or powkiddy v90 work best. Steam deck only comes out if I'm having a real bad day.😅
Even though we have quite a few handhelds, we never play while traveling, except for in the hotel room. Concentrating on playing while riding busses or cars actually gives me motion sickness and it still hard to concentrate on gaming in a train with lots of people chatting away. A smaller handheld is more likely to be taken along because it doesn't feel like a waste of space even if it doesn't see much or any action. But I wonder if the GPD Win 4 will actually be taken along, while my SD doesn't really leave the house. Btw, constantly jumping games is bad for actually finishing RPGs. Have countless ones that I started multiple times and never finished, some of them I've been wanting to finish for 30+ years... Planescape Torment took me two or three tries, starting from the beginning each time, to actually finish and I was proud of myself once I did. xD
As someone who has alot of retro handhelds (yes I have a problem) learning how to move saves and save states around from retroarch would be very helpful haha.
Your shots are nice but I think they have little to do with reality. I don't know anyone who stands on a beautiful ship with a beautiful view on a beautiful day with a bright sun on a railing on the ship and plays.. :)(can you put the RG35xx that bright?..) But thanks for all the nice bags. Better one too many than too few..
"Do these guys think I'm really gonna just be out here in this beautiful weather but also on this cruise I paid for and be playing on a handheld I can barely see the gameplay on? Yeah, yeah they'll totally buy it cuz those mfers are way nerdier than me 😅" Russ probably
Cruise ships are the only places I've encountered those infamous Flaming Finger arcade machines... If only I knew the shirt trick to reduce friction before I got home from the vacation...
I prefer takin only one device with me with a very limited set of sytems and roms. This way I can only focus on a few games without getting lost. It reminds me of childhood trip where I would have a Game Boy and a handful of cartridges.
"The Steam deck is not ideal for playing in direct sunlight" - this is actually one of the two most important things that turns a handheld game console into a proper portable
The sole reason I have a Switch is because it can dock to the tv. there are more important things than burying your face into a device. family, sites, the real world etc. I grew up playing games on the tv with family and friends, and that's still my preference. there are many fantastic handheld games, but given the choice, I'd always play them on a tv with others.
The steam deck and the RG35XX have turned into my only 2 systems. I previously had several others but I figured out these 2 can do anything I need. The thought of the Miyoo mini plus is nice but I don’t feel like I gain anything over what I have other than the “shake test” failure 😂
Haha same with super Mario world! I don’t think I’ve ever beat the game but it’s always a SNES game I load and play. Finally put a bit of time into playing it and got to bowsers castle, and then stopped playing and got caught up with something else. Maybe it’ll get finished when I get the Flip in the mail.
My favourite channel on UA-cam right now. Love the vibe of your videos and the variety of content you're putting out. I'm inspired to pick myself up a steamdeck now whilst it's on sale!
Just the video I needed - Going to the Dominican next month and I plan on taking a gaming laptop, travel router and S20 Fe + Gamesir X2 Pro. Customs is gonna be awesome.
That RG35XX is perfect to accompany the Steam Deck. I feel like the deck is a bit too beefy to just be carrying around with you everywhere. Seems perfect for the hotel room though.
The Steam Deck is awesome, but I find it most appropriate when I go to other people's homes. Like when I visit my partner, or i visit my family. Because whenever I have downtime it's such an exceptionally nice device to play on (with tons of great games). On vacations on the other hand (or when doing overnight hiking), I often have things I want to see or experience, and usually I just get a couple of moments of downtime before bed. In those cases it doesn't make sense to bring something as large as the Steam Deck. I really like bringing the Miyoo Mini. There's just a lot of entertainment to be had in a really small and convenient package. It's a shame the small console isn't sold anymore. :\
Tomtoc makes a sling bag that's smaller but in similar fashion, you could check that! It's called the EDC sling bag, and it comes in various sizes, the smaller version seems exactly what you seemed to wish for at about 10 minutes in the video!
I am fully on VITA now, an update - used PSP cps1-2-NeoGeo apps instead, emulation for these are perfect (even with filters), with PSP-Vita games already accessible. Really think it's handsdown better than anything Anbernic can offer. Once I got CPS1-2 working, it was almost where I wanted it to be, plus it is premium built. Recommend it. Though SNES is a bit weak, might explore running emulators from PSP-Adrenaline instead...
Russ two device is the way, not taking my steamdeck by the pool but will take my RGBmax2 instead. If that gets damaged or drinks spilled on it I won’t be as upset. You should do a video discussing playing outside and what to make the experience better or easier with screens and sun. Getting ready for a Florida trip and I’m trying to figure what I’m going to take since I just got the steam deck and I will have hotel time. I usually bring my ipad and game on that but now I have more choice. Thanks for this interesting video

"I got Covid on my work trip and had to spend the whole trip in my hotel playing retro games"
Suuuurrrrre ya did Russ... Sure ya did 😉
🤣🤣
I love it when i posted my pics on a cruise in the community some people clowned me. but my wife and i had a ball and played some games with crew members and some other cruisers. congrats!
This was great video and very informative, especially for parents, when travelling. You review videos have given me a lot of Christmas ideas as well... Keep up the good work
Great video! Visiting Kauai in May! Bringing my retro handheld as well
Great vid! Was really cool getting to see a different side of you.
I've done the same cruise Russ! I was stationed on Oahu from 2015-2018. My favorite Island to visit was Kauai. I wish the steam deck would have existed back then!
What cruise was it?
@@oldgamedad The 7-day NCL inter-island cruise. It's a great way to see all of the islands in a short amount of time.
19:16 idk why but the way you say “Chrono Trigger” activates my fight or flight response. Great video as always!
Just saying, love the content as a new subscriber.
YES, be a local hero and show figuring out the savestate transfers.
YES, love the honest reality relating to a real vacation with/visiting fam/friends and downtime.
And yes, I agree now with myself much more, and you,
independent systems for different situations is a worthwhile consideration, as I adore the Deck as the all-in-one but it is by no means "pocketable". And honestly maybe not the best choice for just a few quick minutes gaming.
Thank you for sharing how you share your time with gaming and family.
Your example is a very positive one in the gaming community as a whole friend.
Awesome! Thanks Russ!
This is very helpful! Thank you!
@@pin00ch had a 4 hour round trip on a train today best believe I took the deck and a 65w powerbank that can support it made the trip a breeze :)
Glad you had a great vacation! :)
Great Video. Was fun to watch 😊.
You are an amazing Nerd, we all love you!! Your sons are very lucky jeje
Golden sun is an amazing RPG! One of my favorites ❤
Me and my wife work opposite shifts due to our kids ages at the moment. The rp2+ stays at home with whoever is home and the rp3+ goes to work with whoever is going to work.
just got the 35xx same color because of your videos, garliv OS is awesome thanks for all videos and guides
I took my steam deck on a work trip recently as a laptop replacement, and my RG35XX for use on the plane and the 4 hour layover in the hell hole that is LAX.
Can we discuss at length how Russ said "it hit all the wickets"?...
Might be my new favorite phrase.
He must be part British
Great video Russ, I enjoyed it!
This isn't taki lol
All hail the Blue Cube
@@retro_spark he just forgot to put the commas. He meant you, taki, and a few other youtubers
@@davidalvarado9957 oh lol
Its like a field trip and the devices are the students
I hope you put a cape in that bag since you keep saving the folks you went with.
Loved the vibe in this one. I'm all up for those different kind of videos (not complaining about that the in-depth ones in any mean 😅)!
Cheers!
been following you for a few years from the rg350p and love seeing what you do with your channel Russ endless respect to you
Check this amazing video here you will see amazing setup of consoles ua-cam.com/users/shortsgaEQIoXUqno
I LOVE my RG35XX so freaking much.
“Honestly I should make that documentation” 😂😂😂
That's a great video right there.
@VectpoliHomebrew
if youre blabbering about specific chaynese retro knockoff, I've just upgraded my V90 to RG35xx.
Golden Sun is my all time favorite GBA game, I hope you get to finish it some day!
"Pretty short video", oh yeah. AHAM - I love it.
Going to Hawaii in May, will be taking my Vita as my walkabout machine
You would make a fantastic Vlogger. Great video.
😅
"Do these guys think I'm really gonna just be out here in this beautiful weather but also on this cruise I paid for and be playing on a handheld I can barely see the gameplay on? Yeah, yeah they'll totally buy it cuz those mfers are way nerdier than me 😅" Russ probably
Cruise ships are the only places I've encountered those infamous Flaming Finger arcade machines... If only I knew the shirt trick to reduce friction before I got home from the vacation...
I like taking my 353v along when i go fishing.
I prefer takin only one device with me with a very limited set of sytems and roms. This way I can only focus on a few games without getting lost. It reminds me of childhood trip where I would have a Game Boy and a handful of cartridges.
and i'm sitting here with my oldschool anbernic rg350p which i bought for 25€. but for low retro it is still a good device.
@@spritsfal5088 Exactly! Some situations are just easier to throw it in my pocket. Definitely not a necessity since the Deck will play everything.
Based Russ traveling around one of the most beautiful places and still gaming as much as possible ❤ Our guy
Love that you show lion King genesis game playing on the CRT.
It’s such a good game. My parents bought it for my little sister back in the day but I ended up playing it way more than her 😎
Fantastic vid, what camera did you use for the B-roll? Super smooth. 35XX ftw! Stubbs
Thank you for your service. Hopefully other noticed your were a navy member!
You’re basically living my dream, out in Hawaii with all these retro games lol
I know they're often out of stock, but I hadn't heard they'd stopped making them. There was a March 11th drop at the official ali express.
My Handheld Setup is similar, i use the Deck and as Companion the RG353v - It's the perfect combination for me =)
I have this weird thing, i can't go back to smaller screens. I got a Steam Deck now but due to the screensize i can't really find myself downsizing.
