Always a satisfying job just changing the oils on the car, but can I give you a little tip when I do anything like this on the drive always put cardboard down every time I have anything delivered and a big cardboard box I break it up and use the cardboard. Stop the oil on the drive. Up there for thinking down there for dancing words to live by😂
There is a small amount of fluid that needs to be changed under the shifter as well. A quick tip on the oil change - a red Solo party cup will fit below the oil filter and is large enough to catch the oil and the filter as well. Saves a lot of cleanup (well until you convert to a remote oil filter setup).
@@furiousdriving yep through the cabin, it’s not as horrible a job as it sounds - you need to get the console and the shift bushing out. It’s a good opportunity to check the shift bushing as well.
Change the gearbox turret oil too! You may need new gaskets? I got quite quick at oil changes on my MX. Can't drive it in ulez alas, but it needs a gentle restoration anyway. Has it since'98. Never broken down. Drive it all over the uk. Such a great little car.
Years ago I had an old Citroen ZX with a knackered gearbox which would whine in 5th at motorway speeds and sometimes try to pop out of gear. To keep it going I changed to a slightly thicker oil and added Molyslip. It solved the problem at the cost of a stiff gear change when cold, which I was happy to accept.
Seen a Eunos roadster parked on a drive near me. If you hadn't got yours I'd have wondered why the Mazda had wrong badge. Great little car for the Summer.
I am so jealous of that gearshift that you have Lad. I can almost feel it. Mostly I feel the love for your Eunos. Beware that you don't make the P6 V8 jealous because it has a roar on it.
Its definitely good advice to loosen the transmission filler plug first, particularly on this model of MX5 as they have a reputation for going really tight over time. I have the same model and there was no way the filler was going to come out with a normal open ended spanner. I managed to special order a 14mm square section socket which fits nicely, however I then needed to go back to the parts shop to get a breaker bar with a universal joint on the end to fit around the exhaust which is right in the way! Job done - eventually!
Just did my oil on my 92 Miata. Great minds think alike. My rule for oil on cars is the same as you gear oil one. First I make sure I can loosen the oil filter before I drain any oil.
Thankfully You’ve got the Eunos and the Volvo! Cars that appreciate regular maintanance ! And don’t come with nasty surprises undergoing it ! 😂😂😂 Nice job Matt! 👍🏻👍🏻🆙 like allways!
Thomas would be a perfect name for the Eunos after its designer Tom Matano, who i had the pleasure of meeting at one of the owners club meets at Gaydon
Saw a Eunos like yours in same colour and trim at a car meet in the North East during the week - only negative was it was an auto box. Very tidy though.
Good job Matt, it was recommended to me that I use 80/90 LSD oil in my Eunos. 75/90 is good for the UK cars but not the imports. Also changing the gear shifter boot is a cheap easy fix and makes a big difference.
The issue of what gearbox oil improves the notchy change in MX5s is well worn path. Some say RED LINE MT90 75W-90 GL4 is the one to go for but I've tried it and it's no better than an oil half the price. With regard to the oil filter go for K&N HP 1008. It's got the 1" nut on the top which makes undoing it tons easier.
Well done Matt a great job on the mx5 which will keep it running well into the future always a messy job loved my Mazda 3 which had the same engine and never had such a great car for being fun to drive and reliable keep up the hard work Daniel

Matt a trick I've heard about when changing engine oil. When you remove the oil filler cap is to connect a vacuum hose to top of engine turn it on and when you remove the drain plug the oil stays in until you turn of the vacuum. Another tip from a mx5 owner is have you looked at the relocation kit for oil filter to the bulk head think mx5 parts is the go to for this. Don't forget to check the fluid levels after a bit of driving. Great stuff as always .
I have a 2litre nc and its always had a very difficult change from 1to2 nd when the oil is cold. Its had several oil changes in its life ,and never improved . I have driven many other mx 5s of all ages , and it seems to be a common theme .
With the time you seem to spend under cars in uncomfortable positions, digging and constructing an inspection pit in the garage or the new carport might be helpful. With a pit jack as safer than one on a plank.
Mazda recommends 75w90, but 75w80 results in far far superior cold weather changes and much smoother running. I would recommend 75w80, not 75w90. No less protection due to modern synthetic oil hugely surpassing old dinosaurus mineral oil.
I don't know if u have been told or not but I thought I would let u know incase. U have not changed all the oils in your gearbox. U need to change the turret oil where the gear lever goes in. There is another little reservoir in there that needs doing
The worse part of changing the diff and gearbox oil is the smell of the oil and l did an engine oil and filter change on my Hilux and l drained the sump for a while and removed the oil filter and there was very little oil in the filter must be the way it is set up and when l drained the which l know hadn't been done for a while and 5 litres came out which obviously means it doesn't burn oil at all and it has done 436000 kilometres the what an engine is the 22R

The later 2.0lt engined ones (we've an immaculate 2010 plate MX5) has the oil filter on the other side and is a fiddly little bugger to get out without removing a cover and even then it still makes an absolute mess over the sub frame.
Well, that was chaotic. It’s a really bad idea to jack up the rear of a car with the front wheels on ramps. You were incredibly lucky it didn’t roll backwards as soon as the rear wheels were off the ground.

I'm desperate to do my mk2.5 gearbox oil and diff iv done the engine and filter but weary of having to pump it in. Its on 67k now with no history. Will it be the same?
It does have and LSD but I couldnt find any reference to that, even on the MX5 shops, perhaps with the old mineral oils that would have originally been recommended?
