I'm not a professional welder; only a hobbyist. That being said, I have learned so much from you and Jody about methodically laying out a project, tips for spacing, welding in a comfortable position, equipment, etc. The music makes this even more relaxing to watch.
From a relatively new home gamer like myself having a blast welding scraps in the garage to a $$$ making pro like yourself, I have much, much respect for your skills and videos like these help keep me motivated and always wanting to learn more!!! 👍👍
From a relatively new home gamer like myself having a blast welding scraps in the garage to a $$$ making pro like yourself, I have much, much respect for your skills man and am trying hard almost everyday to up my welding skills to hopefully be employable in the near future! Videos like these keep me motivated and always learning!!! Please keep putting out great content.
Your music choice just made my day. Fabricator 1 staircase zero. Pissing rain and snow outside my shop in Canada this November evening, so your video just brightened things. Thanks much. B.McP.
Lewis Renovation yes, every three steps were perpendicular to each other. So if I held one tread level with the jackstand then all I had to do was plumb the other tread. Thanks for watching!
First 5 comments are from other UA-camrs, that's saying something about the online community. Glad to see a constructive group get even stronger. The music doesn't hurt either.
I love the classical background music. For some reason it fits your videos perfectly every time. Stair case looks amazing. Thanks for sharing the install site as well. Always nice to see a finished job. 😀
Great work as always man. Ive built quite a few spiral staircases and it was really interesting to see someone else do it. I like how you made the eyelits instead of stacking a colar up the center column. I used to cut colars and put a set screw in them. The treads were cut and reinforced after being bent/broke. Hand rail was the worst part. Had a fancy machine for rolling but that was only on a single plain. So i would eye ball it as it came out of the dies and pull it to make the helix. Keep up the great work.
I will have to say that this is a bad ass fabrication job! Enjoyed watching you build it and the on site install. I found you through Jodi's channel. Subbed to yours now as well. And like most others, love the music. Will be checking out all your other video's.
Serious tool envy for that cutting machine, even though I do nothing that would justify owning such a machine. I'm assuming you put the treads on the centre pole before attaching the kickboards for a particular reason? Anyone else I would assume it was so that if they warped in the welding, that wouldn't stop them fitting together - but you don't seem to have problems with stuff warping out of shape.
Great build! A couple of questions; which make and model is your plasma cam? It is cutting a very clean cut, how do you have it dialed in? The notch cutter I have not seen before is it shop made? Thanks
JC S thank you.... it's a plasmacam dhc2 4x4 running a hypertherm powermax65. I believe the key to good plasma cuts, is clean dry air.... and the tubing notcher is a westward fab, but it's modeled after the JD2 squared tubing notcher.
Great build JD, who says you don't need math to be a fabricator eh. Getting the top rail of the handrail right would have been a challenge too I imagine. Magic Sir, magic. 👍👍👍🙆👏
A thing of beauty, JD. What were your using to power the tubing roller? Have you seen diamond cut better from the diamond side? I usually cut it from the flat side, but I'm not using a plasmacam.
Many years ago I made one of these stair cases for an underground pumping station. Before computers ! Lots of layouts! Made from steel and aluminum. Cut everything by hand. Bending the steel pipe handrail and installing it was a HUGE headache. Didn’t have a pipe roller, only a torch. Once was enough.
Very cool use of the plasma cutter. Love your videos. JD, in my area people charge about $60 CAD/hr (about $50/us) for basic CNC Plasma work and include design time with it. Waterjets are pretty much overbooked till the end of time because of auto industry boom. Does this sound about normal? I am trying to weigh the cost of PLASMA purchase VS outsource for now. In other words, can I make enough on side work to pay for the plasma or put the $10K into something more profitable in the short run? Thanks for the videos!
John Adams plasma has a much faster turnaround.... on ROI as well as project turnaround... unless the majority of your cutting need are thick I'd stick with a plasma. Thanks for watching
nice stairs, if ]you could answer me, whats was the material cost and the total of? how much the client payed ? I´m curious, I´m from Brazil and the labor here is very underpaid.
For some reason its easier for me to listen to classical with a bit of welding going on in the background. Thanks for the hard work you put into your videos brother!
JD Brewer thanks for the reply. I going to look in to them. The iron ones are going to be to expensive to ship to Belgium i think. Do order them on the website?
JD! Great vid! thanks for posting this. I'm being asked to quite a spiral staircase and I'm rather intimidated. Was this set to code? Did you have any resources for plans? I did find some good tutorials from woodworkers. What will you do differently next time, if there is a next time? ( I think I heard you say on the podcast that there won't be :-) Thanks!
Stephen Dumaine no plans, completely to the customers needs... and I'm pretty sure it not to any code. The customer kinda set the price by all the restrictions upfront. This was a pretty "bare bones" build and it's mainly just for fun not the only way to reach both levels. But just like any custom job sometimes you make good money and sometimes poor money... but still made money.... I don't really have a good answer for the price.
each step was a 30* pie slice right? and did i count 15 steps? what was your rise? run? how was foot clearance? head clearance? was it easy/comfortable to use? sorry for so many Q's!
Hey JD, How did you correct the transitions on the railing? At 9:04, they seem to be off a bit. Anyways thanks for the video, your process gives some great ideas, excellent music choice as well.
not bad at all for the first time you doing it. I re done stair cases and the piece you designed around you should remove it's a pain in the butt. Just weld them stairs directly onto the pillar and cut them support under the steps in an angle to support the load better. I used 2 support pieces per step. That will cut your time down a lot. Also line up each step with the end and front line this way you have the proper pattern. Spacing between each step you can read up easy but it's 8" - 8-1/4" on height step to step.
Yeah i noticed throughout the video with the hand rail there were a couple spots that looked iffy. Everything is an optical illusion lol youre welcome JD. You guys do awesome work, keep it up and turn and burn!
Oh i wasnt poking fun! Lol still turned out awesome. Was just saying everything is an "optical illusion" and making those take a special kinda skill and you sir are an optical illusionist. 👍🤘
And for a beautiful, under the radar move... @t=5:08 -- Like a rock drummer flipping his sticks while playing... Mr. Brewer removes the vise grip clamp, then rotates/flips it, before again setting the clamp in place..... Just fun artistry. I like it.
I was hoping to see how to figure out the compound curves/radiuses of the hand rail. Have done the same cheating like this and cut and twist but it always show a little when done.
we are looking into building a set for a customer, we are a small fab shop that specializes in hand rails and various custom fabrication and repairs. would you say most of those hours were in the building of it or just figuring it out?
Good job JD. Until I read your notes I had no idea it was your first spiral staircase. I have a personal dislike for spiral stairs and winders in place of landings. They are both bad news when anything bulky and or heavy has to be carried up or down the stairs.

Gary Stark good to hear, thanks for watching!
Thanks for bringing us all along for the build. I know you had a few challenges but you muscled past them and got it done and it turned out great 👍
weldingtipsandtricks thanks alot Jody!! Glad you liked it!

Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching!!
I think this build is like the video and music, that's why I gave a thumbs up. Bloody Excellent, cheers from John, Australia.
Very nice JD! Were you using the jack stand to maintain angular rotation on each stair tread?
Lewis Renovation yes, every three steps were perpendicular to each other. So if I held one tread level with the jackstand then all I had to do was plumb the other tread. Thanks for watching!

JD , that looks fantastic , you never cease to amaze me with the high quality products you turn out!!😀👍
Randy Treeman36 thank you very much!

Moto Z thanks, I did that trying to cut down on the overall weight. The handrail totally sucked
Wow JD, That is amazing!! very good work with the plasma cam, And all of it for that matter. Great job!
JIMBO'S GARAGE thanks alot, Jimbo!
So many levels! Great build JD. I lean so many fabrication techniques from you videos. Thank you
Master of None Nice, thanks alot!!
JD as always a great job well executed great fabrication those fireball squares are the business 🤘🖒
James White thanks, yes they are!!

I enjoy all your videos iam a welder myself and I always get great ideas from watching you keep up the great work jd
Chad Knotts thank you!

AWESOME, JD!! Spiral staircases are a real challenge but your end results were great! Nice build!!
Reid Eichner thank you very much!
Simply amazing. I’m at a loss for words here. I don’t know if I could ever do that. Wow. Great job sir
Great build JD, who says you don't need math to be a fabricator eh. Getting the top rail of the handrail right would have been a challenge too I imagine. Magic Sir, magic. 👍👍👍🙆👏
whitedoggarage haha, yup. Thanks alot!
A thing of beauty, JD.
What were your using to power the tubing roller?
Have you seen diamond cut better from the diamond side? I usually cut it from the flat side, but I'm not using a plasmacam.
idriwzrd plasmacam had height control so it's a breeze for diamond plate. I was using a rigid 300 pipe threader to power the tubing roller
I'm glad some one else noticed the pipe threader and said something. Great idea. :)
The best type of staircase, nice work
Quality fabrication for sure! Wow, end result is amazing!
That's really nice work, JD. When you were rolling the railing, how did you get the rise along with the radius.
Honestly it was super choppy and not really smooth..... it's a lot of smaller pieces that could be bent
The cnc is the only reason I tried it.... and yes, once is enough!
Nice job JD. How far do you rotate the treads to get their placement? Never built a spiral stair and have always wonder about that. Thx
jimgam730 turned out to be easy... each stair was 30°... so after 3 steps every third step was 90° perpendicular to each other
Nice one. I bet that fitting and bending that hand rail was a bugger of a job. Great end result!
tom arkle it as the worst
That was extraordinarily pleasant to watch.
Robert Palmer glad you liked it

Fantastic. Looks great. So many things can go wrong on a project like that. Yikes.
Nice build man, just curious what thickness pipe/tube and size was used and what brand bender is that?
4" x .25" harbor freight bender
I’m sorry I wasn’t specific, I meant to say what size/thickness handrail. I need to redo the one in my house from cheap 1” pvc to steel.
nice stairs, if ]you could answer me, whats was the material cost and the total of? how much the client payed ? I´m curious, I´m from Brazil and the labor here is very underpaid.

Fantastic job JD! I can just imagine the hrs that went into the handrail, wow!
Richard Valcourt quite a few! Thanks
Beautifull work, beautifull video an music! Thanks!
Carlos Servidio thanks for watching!
Amazing If at all possible could you tell me how you were able to manually put a helix on the cap?
Nice build! Do you have the cast iron megasquares or the aluminium ones? The really seem handy tools!
Tom Wagemans I have both, I reach for the cast iron the most.
JD Brewer thanks for the reply. I going to look in to them. The iron ones are going to be to expensive to ship to Belgium i think. Do order them on the website?
Awesome work JD! My work just got a plasma table and I wish I was even close to your level at operating it. Thank you for the video
Donovan Morris just practice it's not to hard. Thanks!
Wow bro that was a great job and a fun video to watch, you’re killing it with all the different ways to use those fireball tools!!
Joel Fabricius thank you, glad you enjoyed it
JD great video! What gauge are your steps?
JD! Great vid! thanks for posting this. I'm being asked to quite a spiral staircase and I'm rather intimidated. Was this set to code? Did you have any resources for plans? I did find some good tutorials from woodworkers.

the music for this is perfect, so enjoyable to watch *thumbs up*
Hey JD,
How did you correct the transitions on the railing? At 9:04, they seem to be off a bit. Anyways thanks for the video, your process gives some great ideas, excellent music choice as well.
You're the man. That looks very well done
Skeetmgeett thanks and thanks for watching!
8:39. I see you used the rolling machine to make circular handrail. But how did you circle it along the staircase upwards?????
It was rough, but cut into smaller pieces I was able to make it fit
Turned out wonderful thanks for the video
Mark Crotty thanks for watching
Please explain the additional line at 1:38 . Are you using 30-degree treads?
This is awesome! I was thinking about Spiral stair cases on my drive home the other day. Excellent work JD!
That is pretty sweet JD, great job ! 👍👍
Terrminator again thank you very much!
I really need to get myself a plasmacam for my everlast plasma cutter. That software makes fabrication so much easier.
That is one bad ass staircase.
alexander howa thanks!
Great skill Great Music!!!!!!!!!
Jerry Jordan thank you

Lumanet Solar Energy LLC I agree.... I learned alot doing this one. Thanks!
where'd you get that heavy duty triangle square? i gotta get me one!!
Greetings from Jimmy Diresta channel. :) Great work with this barn doors.
Impressive. Very cool.
Alistair Spence thanks
Beautiful job.
Very nice work jd
Seth Mercer thank you
That looks awesome! I love spiral staircases
Awesome work JD! 👍👊
Fred McIntyre thanks!
how did you do it to give it the angle asia up ??
Hell yeah, awesome project.
Hatchet Lake thank you!
Fantastic job!
Brendon Jarrett thank you!
What type of tube bender do you use to bend the railing?
i am happy that you have the plasma cam but this way to builds leaves 99.7 % of us out
this can be done with a torch or plasma free hand. add in a sander and grinder and youre good to go.
New Subscriber, Great Work‼️👍👍. Vinny 🇺🇸
Thanks!
Damn! This is pretty cool JD; were there parts of this project that had you stumped along the way?
Randy Harris mainly just the handrail
Randy Harris thanks!
Yeah i noticed throughout the video with the hand rail there were a couple spots that looked iffy. Everything is an optical illusion lol youre welcome JD. You guys do awesome work, keep it up and turn and burn!
Randy Harris yeah, it was rough... but everyone liked it still

Talented guy thats for sure
Very nice job
Bill Bill thank you very much
Very awesome man I’ve been waiting for this video for a while thanks for sharing your amazing
Eric Long sorry it took so long... tha is for watching!
Looks awesome is there anything you can’t build. You do an awesome job with everything you build 👊
Chris Wojnarski there's plenty I can't do. Thanks for watching!
needs another rail to be code, no more than 4 inches between spindles. If just used in emergency then might be ok???
Another enjoyable video and music! Ever wondered how you got by without those Fireball Squares?
Mark Tracy they have completely changed how I work... can't imagine not having them now
PERFECT, Professional Build/ Install.
I wonder if the do welding doggles for your hound?
I was hoping to see how to figure out the compound curves/radiuses of the hand rail. Have done the same cheating like this and cut and twist but it always show a little when done.
Magnus it was all guesswork
jd your level is too high for me and you work like a beast perfect work sir
mohammed troy haha I appreciate that, thanks for watching!
How many hours did you spend on this thing?
Ben Henry probably 120-150
Ben Henry total, it was spread out over months
we are looking into building a set for a customer, we are a small fab shop that specializes in hand rails and various custom fabrication and repairs. would you say most of those hours were in the building of it or just figuring it out?
Ben Henry yes, I never did it before... its was a lot of wasted time
mind if i message you though facebook? its a little bit easier for me to keep up with.
Great work and music
What file did you do that with? You want to sell a copy?
Very nice
I just googled your company, I’m in Marietta. Small world. I was in villa rica yesterday haha
Made it look easy brutha 🤙🏻
Luke Podmore appreciate that!
Nice! It's funny how a couple weeks of work only translate to a few minutes on UA-cam! Haha
5th Street Fab yeah, it's tough to show everything too
Pretty work!
Really nice job on that! Question: ever started your beard on fire? lol. Thanks for the video.
Duncan MacKenzie not yet!
Awesome job JD!
Scooter Rat thank you!
Good job. Great video.
Craig Fuller thankj you
it's rare that someone would order something like this for their house. stuff like this cost a lot of money!!
Neil Brown very true
Pretty cool JD. I think you need one more bubble level. :)
Tyler Schneiter thanks, you know it😉
That looked difficult as far as getting the next step in the correct position around the staircase. Good work!
Thanks!
what the price tag on something like that
Very impressive!!
Excellent!
Carter W Hern thanks!
como le hiciste para darle el ángulo Asia arriba?
Belleza maestro mi respeto saludos desde Ecuador 🇪🇨
БРАВО МАСТЕР!
Good job JD. Until I read your notes I had no idea it was your first spiral staircase. I have a personal dislike for spiral stairs and winders in place of landings. They are both bad news when anything bulky and or heavy has to be carried up or down the stairs.
