I have the exact same kit. I recieved it as a gift from my nephew. I to added some of my own items and removed some. The whistle is ok you just have to blow on it the right way. It's a little figgity the way it works. The case is worth the price paid by itself. The addition of some items I added was 6 tealight candles, a better folding knife, 6 1ltr water purification pills, a 1ltr water bag, A mini denatured alcohol lamp fueled up, sealed in a medicine bottle to prevent leaks and evaporation of the alcohol and 1oz of extra fuel, in an eyewash bottle, repurposed but clearly marked as fuel. A hot melt glue stick. A few different sizes of gauze pads, a small roll of medical tape, 2 extra heavy duty rubber bands 1" wide X 9" long, for use in making a slingshot or fishing spear or a snare spring.2 metal tins, 1 slide top 2 3/8" long X 11/4" wide X 1/2" thick as a mini boo boo kit with assorted bandaids, antobiotoic ointment, alcohol pads, iodine pads, and a round 2"dia X 3/4"thick tin with screw on lid/w seal in lid as a med tin with the usual items, imodium, benadryl, activated charcoal pills, prescription meds, pain meds etc. Sealed into heat shrink tubing sealed at both ends. In different color tubes. And list of items and info on colors to identify each kind of pills and a desiccant pk. Some cotton balls, a pencil, some paper for writing and 2 mini twist lights 1" X 1/2", 1white, 1purple. A compass, miniature zippo style capsule lighter, 3 electrolyte powder mixes. A little snare wire. And still room for a little more gear.

  • @robbabcock_

Damn! For $6 you can't go wrong! If the case is waterproof that's worth six bucks alone. The mag/steel actually looks pretty decent. If the notebook really is waterproof it's worth a couple of bucks at least. The towels don't have a ton of survival use but I really love 'em for camping. The folding silverware isn't useful for survival but it would be a nice camping gadget. The light looks cheap but it lights up at least. I like it after your additions!
I wonder what it costs if you buy it at Walmart?

Wow! Can't believe your reviewing a kit I own. I bought this "kit" at Walmart for the box. I paid $4.88 or something. Just wanted the box. It has kept my phone dry while
kayaking. Glad to see the other stuff has some use.

I would say that for $6 your doing very well for your money. My sister brought me something similar for Xmas. Just as a joke.
    But here's the thing:
No the knife isn't a Swiss Army and no, it won't take any abuse but:
The blade actually took a reasonable edge and the can opener actually works. It's not brilliant but it works. Beats a razor blade or Detachable knife.
Is it the kit I would want?
    No.
If some evil sod decided to dump me on an island for a week with it would I be happy?
    Probably not.
Would I be happy to have it?
    Hell yes!

Another great video Eric. I would pay very good money for the kit you made up. Coming from the UK, even being able to purchase a cheap survival kit from Walmart fills me with a little envy. Nothing like that exists in UK stores or even what pass for stores selling outdoor gear. There are a few (very good) online stores that sell such kits but we pay much more for them than you do. People engaged in outdoor pursuits in the UK may invest in decent clothing and footwear but are largely ignorant of survival requirements. Our areas of wilderness are small but are frequently deadly largely for unprepared people.

@@KitbashedSurvival You can get any size knife you want, you just can't carry one ''without good reason'' unless it's a folding, non-locking blade under 3 inches long. Knives & machetes etc. marketed as ''zombie killers'' have been outlawed as far as I know. But I bought a standard gardening machete for just £5 (£6) online from a home/garden webshop, and it was delivered to my door by Royal Mail, they didn't ask for a signature or proof of age. I live in a block of flats (appartment block) with no gardens anywhere near lol. I've also ordered a few bushcraft knives no problem. I've also carried a large knife in my bag, but to work in a restaurant kitchen, which again is allowed as that is ''good reason'' to carry it..

Must admit that many years ago I bought the female version (rose gold color) of this at walmart during around Christmas when they were on a stocking stuffer display. I was new to prepping and thought how cool! I’ve since ditched most of the contents and instead added some stuff I might need while boating/skiing with friends - extra sunscreen packets, minor first aid, some allergy supplies, bug wipes and then stash my phone, some cash, and car key in it. I cut about foot long section of a pool noodle and ran some rope thru the center and tied and then hook the case to it in case it goes overboard so it will float. Tfs!

Small tube of Blistex will fit in by the lighter. Tape the push lever on the lighter so the fluid doesn't leak out all over the rest of the stuff in the kit. Put the emergency poncho in your pocket along with more toilet paper and some hand sanitizer. I think it is a great video and a good kit. Good Job Sir!

Great video. I got a few of these at WM for $7 thinking BOB or EDC (originally $21 during Christmas). Then I found them for $2.50 and bought 22 kits for a friend that runs a Boy Scouts camp in Nogales. I was wondering how to turn it into a decent kit or EDC as they are a good starting point. Maybe missing a signal mirror, fishing wallet card and line, magnifier, salt tablets and Vaseline cottons. Also a $1 sewing kit might fit and mini crazy glue. Great job.

It is undeniably well worth $6, the magnesium ferro rod combination alone is worth that!
The case allows the inclusion of other goodies too.
This is the extremely rare instance in which one cannot buy the individual components for below the selling price of the complete kit.

It's a good starting point for what you paid and it provided a good lesson, don't rely on store bought survival kits. I got some of the magnesium ferro rod things, they're OK they work but the metals very soft, they get used fairly quickly you wouldn't want to rely on them for a long time.

would have gone with the victorinox that has the magnifying glass. It can help you see splinter wounds better and focus sunlight to light tinder. You can find the case alone for $6. And the combination ferro rod. And the notebook.
So, this whole thing for $6 is just fine. Ditch the SAK knock-off, put the cutlery tool in your work bag or something, keep the rest, and put more stuff in the kit. I was ready to laugh at this as well, but for $6 the kit is fine. Certainly not a good survival kit, but for $6 there are some useful items that will cost you way more if you buy them individually.

This video was a lot of fun. I liked the jokes and also putting together your own kit. You have to test equipment to know if it's good! You can't just look at it! Yes there are things of such poor quality that when you see them (in person) you can rule them out immediately as junk. But many other things look good (or at least passable) until you try them. Is the waterproof container actually waterproof? Does the wire saw actually work without breaking? You know this principle because you added a Victorinox knife. You have used them for many years and know that they work. This is why I would say it's always better to put together your own kit with familiar items.

    • @KitbashedSurvival

As far as it goes, I feel like the box and compressed towels and ferro rod are worth the $7 I paid. And while you say for all that you added you could buy a good pre-made kit, IMHO its better to out together your own kit
Not from a cost or even quality perspective, but for the comfort of knowing what is in the kit and being familiar and comfortable with each item.
Premade kits are fine, but until you've opened it up and familiarized yourself with it, it's a suprise bag when shprises are the last thing you need.

Ozark trail is the absolute low end starter gear you but a kid that is just starting out in camping and survival, as they learn and get older.,as the experience grows then they will appreciate gear that works. They wont like the price.

For 6 bucks, it’s actually a decent deal.... minus the knife.

Oh yeah, you don't want to be stranded on a desert island without a spoon. What if a can of beans washes up? How will you eat it? I can't believe I never thought of putting a spoon in a survival kit.

I’d buy it and just replace some items with better quality items like a real Swiss Army knife a better fire starter add some kindling para chord a multi tool etc

100% fr? Ozark Trail is killing the outdoor/survival/experience game rn. I'm happy with everything I've picked up back in that section of Walmart over the last couple years.

Surprises me how they either have a pencil or waterproof paper. Why have one and not the other.
