They are sensitive about how much oil you put in them , my buddy had one did the same thing!! The day he bought it , the shop put a little to much oil in it, and the same thing happened, it sounds good ,!! Good job mike, you going to post the full build on it ?

After fixing it it sounded like it was knocking, but based off other vids of these things idling with bad valve lash(which I have now fixed) it sounds identical, I’m scared to start it now though fearing valve/piston interference happened, never got off idle/trying to start with the exhaust cam like that, I’m just wondering if you feel there might have been interference? If that’s the case, I guess I’m out till summer,
You brought another sport quad back from the dead, 👍🏼. I have a neighbor that calls the cops every time I start mine. It's funny because most of the time they drive by and give me the nod like they're cool with it. One time I was caught driving down the street and the cop just looked and smiled. He didn't say a word. I mean come on, I get that it's loud, but it's just for a few minutes after changing a jet out. It's not like I'm running it all day.
Exactly man; I've gotten the nod too; I think they're obligated to respond but if they don't catch you ripping they're not going to hassle. This has been going on for years... everyone in my county knows its me.. 😂
Right on Mike. The Pred is finally taking shape! FYI, that ticking sound is not normal, and whoever said the Predator engine is normally noisy is wrong for sure. I actually had an Outlaw 500 new back in '06, and the motor was very quiet. A few riding buddies of mine rode Predators and none of them made any ticking noise. A quick search of exhaust videos for Predator 500's on youtube, and you will notice that all you hear is exhaust, and no ticking. The ticking sound could be anything. Could be an ever so slightly bent valve if you didn't replace the valves, worn valve guides, timing chain tensioner etc. I didn't make this comment to "call you out", just giving my .02c. I trail rode my Outlaw for 4 years and put over 200 hours on it, near the end of my ownership the engine had an ever so slight "tick" that you wouldn't notice unless you put your ear up by the head while idling. Your tick is so loud it can be heard at the end of your driveway with the exhaust facing the camera - something is worn past it's service limit.
Send it bro....Mine has always made a little noise. If I could get crank bearings I would change them but until then... Just check your valve lash after break in and re torque head bolts while your in there. No offense DOC.
Bro, I always appreciate constructive criticism! I watch you're videos btw; I know you're meticulous 🤘 I'm not sure about this one though; I'm not doubting your experience or knowledge by any means but keep in mind this engine is pretty modified. I installed new kibble white valves, lapped them, did the water test, inspected clearances and valve guides and everything checked out. I am wondering if your outlaw and the predators you were familiar with had stock airboxes etc? I am weary because of the overwhelming comments in support of predators having a tick and the 20+ DMs I've received saying the same. I am going to re check clearances after there is some more time on the engine as well but it's running really good now after dropping the jetting more.

Hay Mike, when you find cracks like the one on the left side of that frame, you should drill a small hole at the end of the crack to keep it from continuing to get worse. I've seen cracks welded up and them continue to crack after welded up.
Glad to see it running. Im telling you hearing this quad brings back some memories. My brothers Predator was fast and seemed to run better than others with similiar mods.
I've watched all your videos on your rebuild for this quad. I have one myself and want to rebuild it but I don't have time money or the knowledge to break down and engine and rebuild it. I love how it came out absolute masterpiece.

Sounds good man! A tip on the carburetor when it bogs down when you try to stab the throttle, it’s the accelerator pump timing. There’s a really good video on UA-cam that explains it and how to set it right. Just search FCR accelerator pump timing.... then do the “fcr zip tie mod” it’s a real common thing in the YFZ 450 world. And since you’re running that car it will 100% benefit you. 🤙🏼🤙🏼 VaDirtSlingers
Mike, put that thing on a dirtbike stand, loosen the shock springs, all three until the spring is floating. Give it minimum 1.5 turns down, and see how much difference that will make with the ride height. Looks so high, but this method will fix it!
Id break the motor in fully before even thinking about checking valve clearances as mentioned by someone. Sounds fine. Big 4 strokes almost always tick. And keep the lighter flywheel. Was turned on a lathe, its good lol. Not sure which one will win yet. They'll both have us and downs. Straight line drag the pred might take it b.c. it can get to speed quicker with the high torque. Possibly lol. Good vid man!!!
Those booger welds that were on there when you got it were most likely mig welds with no gas. Or crappy cheap welder too but those are deffinetly not strong welds so its good that you fixed them up. Good job man

I used to have a 03 predator 500 and that thing was an animal for sure! yes the top end for sure is noisy and when I first got it I thought the same thing something was wrong lol. Awesome work man, that rich condition is slightly weird, but I think it's just the accelerator pump... I guess so based on the symptoms my FCR40 was/is doing with my Z400
My brother's friend was on a stock Predator while we were at the dunes. He was coasting back down China Wall and when he hit the whoops one of the tie rods snapped at the ball joint causing the wheel to turn in. Flipped him over the bars so quick. Broke his nose. Luckily he wasn't hauling ass. How we got it back to camp in Gordon's Well is another story lol
the little clickti from the block it's normal.....good job low rpm tork its sick! mine take up at middle range to the top .....he got nothing at low rpm but when go middle rpm the beast come out😃good joob man you work like a boss , 🤟🤟💪👍
Hey I want you to show how you hooked the carb up like where the hoses go I've watched this and all other Polaris predator 500 videos And you got the carb and air filter looking Sharp BUT YOU didn't show how you run the hoses like where they go please do that on your next ATV build bc of what I understand all ATV are similar

Great vid! I would say to expect a little crank case blow by during the break in period! Give it 10hrs and I bet those rings will be perfect! That thing is a beast! Love what you do with them! Basket case to running monster. For the record my Raptor 666, took about 20hrs to really break in, with Wiseco piston and rings.
Great build! Kinda disappointed, that you didn't cut donuts in the yard, like John did....😂🤣 Welding- TIG. Slower than MIG, but if you're after control & looks, that's where it's at. Really enjoyed seeing the jets changed; haven't seen that content anywhere else before.

I’m glad guys told you that those engines were noisy. That thing makes some funny sounds. Quad Wars is going to be interesting. Both quads seem to have lots of torque. 👍🏻
You guys should do a utility quad shootout for the next quad wars, with the two rules being 1)they must be shifters so no cvt's 2)one shock in the rear suspension
Predators are designed for bottom end. The top end isn’t ideal so the best way to stay in the power is to short shift it JUST A LITTLE to avoid the area of the RPM range that flattens out. If you short shift it will feel like a smooth and constant acceleration from the bottom of first to the top of 5th.
They are also finicky with fuel. You can use the same octane, but change the brand and for some reason it will run different. Good job on the build so far, can’t wait to see it up against the Raptor

Good job on the weld fix (tin foil works awesome to keep mig splatter down- Those other welds though! Looks like Ray Charles welded those braces with his feet!
I imagine you have already but the valves seem to be ticking, the engine have like a rod knock noise, no ticks, I have a predator but with a stock bore I believe so I’m not sure about a 560 but that’s what I’m going to, sweet build though, love it
Yup and if it backfires the pilot is lean. He said since it didn't backfire its not lean. A backfire when letting off would be the down low fueling aka the pilot jet.
Crazy thing my YFZ450 was doing the same thing at high rpm regardless of engine running temperature. Stupid enough to find out after a carb rebuild and switching jets. That I had my carb without that same cover as you had yours. The one where you hook your throttle cable. As soon as I got the rubber seal and installed 0 issues. Call me crazy or whatever but it worked for me.
@@MichaelSabo I been running mine with 190/45/90 for a little over 2 years with no issues until that side cover came off. One thing is for sure you never know with this things. One moment is this the other one is something completely different.
For your helmet you should bite the bullet and get some 100% armegas because they fit the helmet a lot better because they are a bit wider.just a suggestion
Those run both directions, Kenda klaw xcr's. I used to run them on a banshee, i prefer them the traditional direction but they advertised that you can run them both ways when they came out back in the day
@@SketchyXC yeah I remember them from way back but never ran them On my banshee I always preferred the holeshots and holeshots xc but never knew anyone to have luck running them backwards they always seemed directional to me as most in that tread design are directional
Yfz and the trx have that valvetrain flutter noise from the intake to them bc of the carb when you take the airbox lid off. Do the zip tie carb trick on it too... itll help to eliminate the bog for quick throttle blips.
Hmm, I wonder if this is a result of eliminating the airbox entirely? I did do the zip tie mod after the video and dropped the main more and she revs now man! Thank you for the help!

yes they are sensitive to the oil level and spits out what they don't want through the breather, all normal. not sure about the smoke as it goes into the airbox on my quad so can't ever recall seeing smoke
Great build! I'd be interested to see a quad wars with some shaft drive sport quads. They can be alot of fun too. The first quad I ever did any performance mods to was a Yamaha Timberwolf. It would scoot pretty good for a shaft drive 250. Just an idea if you come across any for cheap.

Do you use a zapper box while welding? The voltage from your welder can arc inside the ecu. When ever I'm welding on semi trucks we have to use them, just curious so far love the channel good to see old machines coming back to life.

I'll say it again, put the stock flywheel back on it and check your valve clearance again. They tend to need adjustment after you run em a bit.
Very true....check em' after break in and changing the oil. IDK about the flywheel tho.

Yfz450r GYTR Needle on the third clip position from the top. Try that, fixes most sputtering issues on the FCR carbs

Lightening the Flywheel gives more bottom end snap. And throttle response, lighter makes it easier for the engine to rev up.
Been welding almost 20years. You did good. Its cheap China steel. Hard to do anything with it. Keep it up
Truth. Plus welding over factory welds and no matter how well you clean it, dirt beds into that china steel making it hard to lay down nice beads.

I would put 2 (triangle) gussets on each side of the frame. It would make it much stronger and prevent it to crack next to the new weldbead

I always had problems with jettings on my predator
I’ve had every exhaust on a predator the pure Polaris one is the best sounding and makes the most power
I've heard this from some others too. It depends on setup as well though
Trinity is what i have makes very good power doesn't have that pure polaris sound though
I just found one on ebay and ordered it as soon as I saw it...lol. There are two more also for $200 each. I've been waiting for one to pop up for a while now. Finally have it otw..🤘

Great vid! I would say to expect a little crank case blow by during the break in period! Give it 10hrs and I bet those rings will be perfect! That thing is a beast! Love what you do with them! Basket case to running monster.
For the record my Raptor 666, took about 20hrs to really break in, with Wiseco piston and rings.
The beginning of this video reminds me of my friends asking me how to change a flat tire.

Welding- TIG. Slower than MIG, but if you're after control & looks, that's where it's at.
Really enjoyed seeing the jets changed; haven't seen that content anywhere else before.

Try the voltage regulator that was part of what caused my preadtor to cut out on the top end

I’m glad guys told you that those engines were noisy. That thing makes some funny sounds. Quad Wars is going to be interesting. Both quads seem to have lots of torque. 👍🏻
You guys should do a utility quad shootout for the next quad wars, with the two rules being
1)they must be shifters so no cvt's
2)one shock in the rear suspension
The sound is from valve adjustment all the noise from the top end depends on how you shim the valves

Predators are designed for bottom end. The top end isn’t ideal so the best way to stay in the power is to short shift it JUST A LITTLE to avoid the area of the RPM range that flattens out. If you short shift it will feel like a smooth and constant acceleration from the bottom of first to the top of 5th.
They are also finicky with fuel. You can use the same octane, but change the brand and for some reason it will run different. Good job on the build so far, can’t wait to see it up against the Raptor
I've heard from quite a few that they're bottom end engines naturally. This thing revs out nice now that I've dialed it more though man!

I imagine you have already but the valves seem to be ticking, the engine have like a rod knock noise, no ticks, I have a predator but with a stock bore I believe so I’m not sure about a 560 but that’s what I’m going to, sweet build though, love it

Yup and if it backfires the pilot is lean. He said since it didn't backfire its not lean. A backfire when letting off would be the down low fueling aka the pilot jet.
Yes, they call that a lean backfire
If its breaking up and blurby it usually means its rich
John's seems to be running pretty good, but if you get that thing jetted right, I think John is in the dust! 🤘🏻💪🏼

Crazy thing my YFZ450 was doing the same thing at high rpm regardless of engine running temperature. Stupid enough to find out after a carb rebuild and switching jets. That I had my carb without that same cover as you had yours. The one where you hook your throttle cable. As soon as I got the rubber seal and installed 0 issues. Call me crazy or whatever but it worked for me.
Hmm, I'm not sure if that was effecting me but I dropped my main 2 more sizes and its all cleared up now!
@@MichaelSabo I been running mine with 190/45/90 for a little over 2 years with no issues until that side cover came off. One thing is for sure you never know with this things. One moment is this the other one is something completely different.
Usually with the vent on the stock airbox if you overfill it will puke oil out onto the ground until it's happy lol
Need to do zip tie mod if you’re gonna run that fcr carb....it’ll help with throttle response

Those run both directions, Kenda klaw xcr's. I used to run them on a banshee, i prefer them the traditional direction but they advertised that you can run them both ways when they came out back in the day

They are Kenda klaws you can run them both directions one way for hard pack other way for loose dirt...........
@@SketchyXC yeah I remember them from way back but never ran them On my banshee I always preferred the holeshots and holeshots xc but never knew anyone to have luck running them backwards they always seemed directional to me as most in that tread design are directional

Yfz and the trx have that valvetrain flutter noise from the intake to them bc of the carb when you take the airbox lid off. Do the zip tie carb trick on it too... itll help to eliminate the bog for quick throttle blips.

yes they are sensitive to the oil level and spits out what they don't want through the breather, all normal. not sure about the smoke as it goes into the airbox on my quad so can't ever recall seeing smoke

Great build! I'd be interested to see a quad wars with some shaft drive sport quads. They can be alot of fun too. The first quad I ever did any performance mods to was a Yamaha Timberwolf. It would scoot pretty good for a shaft drive 250. Just an idea if you come across any for cheap.

I would drop the needle jet a notch--lean it out. You don't hit the main jet until the very top and it didn't sound like you got there.
I might drop the need 1 notch to try but I dropped the main to a 170 and it revs out without sputter now

Do you use a zapper box while welding? The voltage from your welder can arc inside the ecu. When ever I'm welding on semi trucks we have to use them, just curious so far love the channel good to see old machines coming back to life.
