Agreed Jessica is such a talented teacher! I have learned so much from her about bagmaking in general - thank you Missouri Star for introducing us to her work!
Have never made a bag and don’t expect to but I still enjoy watching these videos. Never know when I’ll learn some technique I can use in my other sewing!
I purchased two Sally Tomato bag patterns last summer while on a personal shop hop with a friend. They are still in the shopping bag…I now feel much more confident to open the pattern and sew! Thank you MSQC for hosting Jess!
Jess, I have an order ready for you….2 more patterns maybe three and all sorts of other items! Just have to remember to bring my credit card to my sewing room! Wish you did PayPal!
Ahhh making the corner cork handles come together and the top stitching over the 1/4 inch seams finger pressed apart would work well for any of the fancy vinyls and thicker vinyls or even textured ones that you can't really press due to being heat sensitive too. Great tip to store away in my mind. I do hope I can find it later when I need to put it to use. Thanks ladies for your wonderful detailed video of making this fun bag. I'll be back for more of you later.
I am so excited to see this new tutorial. I absolutely loved the Sew Along Videos Jessica did for MSQC last year and have been hoping for new collaborations between Sallie Tomato and MSQC. The previous videos were my introduction to bag making and I sewed along and frankly became obsessed with bag making. It is so fun to be able to increase my skills while making new bags which are now my favorite thing to make. Sallie Tomato is definitely my go-to for bag patterns. Jessica's teaching style fits me perfectly and I love the video tutorials which have taken me from beginner to obsessed. I cannot wait to make this new bag as well as future ones. Thanks for sharing your expertise with us!
Thank you so much for taking the time to share your bag making journey and your wonderful compliments! From all of us at Sallie Tomato we thank you and wish you continued happiness in your bag making journey! :) -from Jess & the Sallie Tomato Team
Loved the tutorial and the bag. As a bag gets larger, I sometimes get frustrated with controlling the stitching. Misty showed how to just keep at it and take a stitch at a time. Looking forward to more from both Misty and Jessica and all at MS
You are so welcome! Thank you so much for watching! We are delighted you enjoyed the video and the new Hamilton Bag! -from Jess & the Sallie Tomato Team
This was awesome, I loved it….However I wish when the straps were being done she would have slowed down a little bit AND did CLOSE-UPs of all the hardware that was placed on the bag. I’m a visual learner & often get anxious when the instructions for intricate parts of a project aren’t slowed down and / or viewed close up!!! All in all, I loved this bag and can’t wait to make one. I’m also excited to see this gal’s other projects as well on social media.😂 You are amazing Misty!!!! Thanks so much for having guests on your channel Misty!! While I absolutely ADORE 😅ALL your videos it’s awesome to have other creators as guests!!!!
I like this, but i feel like this might not be achievable on my basic home machine. I have a singer patchwork, and i have made some denim bags, but it was a struggle. Anyone know if this would be something i should even try, or will it be to bulky?
What is the finished size of the bag? I'm looking for a bag that will fit my embroidery arm. It is approximately 18 x 15 x 5.5 I want to make my own and quilt it so it will be padded. I like the look of the bag and am considering it if it will fit my needs.
See my reply to Sandy's comment about how I save money on hardware and supplies, there are plenty of options for sourcing supplies that aren't as snazzy but still totally workable
I love MSQC and was looking forward to a pattern for a duffel bag, but the kits are way too expensive and I don’t want to use Cork! I might just purchase the pattern but I’m concerned about the cost and ability of finding all the “necessary” notions to make this. Why can’t we have a very nice duffle bag pattern that is reasonably priced for so many of us???
They have a nice complete supply list and it’s just her recommendations for best outcome. You could always try different lower cost or off brand stabilizers and lower cost fabrics or hardware to give it a try. I will say I’ve found that you get what you pay for. The hardware really is worth the extra few bucks in my experience. Good luck & happy sewing!
The more hardware and the more structure a bag pattern is, the more expensive it will be to make, regardless. Sallie Tomato patterns are AMAZINGLY well written and their free video tutorials are amazing. I would suggest looking at their other duffel bag patterns that are less structured and that you can use basic widely-available hardware. For example basic hardware like D-rings, magnetic snaps, webbing, swivel hooks, and slider buckles are available at big box craft stores like JoAnn where you can use coupons - they're just not available in as many colors and they're not as nice. Hardware like bag feet and Chicago screws are less common in the stores around me. Also metal zippers are so snazzy and classy but if you're ok with nylon zippers that saves you a ton of money on hardware as well. A pattern with less interfacing will also be more affordable, especially hardcore specialty interfacing like sew-in foam. Quickly looking at the Sallie Tomato patterns list, if you are looking for a duffel bag and want to avoid cork/leather/vinyl, perhaps the Isla Duffel bag or the Casey Duffel bab would work better for you, it's easy to skip the optional cork on those patterns. Plus the Isla Duffel and Casey Duffel patterns call for less hardware overall. And if you want to try cork someday there's a free tote pattern on the Sallie Tomato website to walk you through your first time sewing it. That cork tote bag is on my sewing queue wishlist but I am committed to using up some of the quilting cotton in my stash before buying cork fabric for the first time 😅 Picking the right bag pattern has been really tricky for me so I feel your pain - I've just had such a good experience with Sallie Tomato patterns and wanted to share some of the tricks that I use to save money and use what I have!
This video was beautifully done, as was the bag. I have one suggestion/question, since I am a person who is hard on luggage and especially soft luggage. Is there a reason you ruled out using 40-weight thread (just a little thicker) or even upholstery thread to sew the bag together?
Here is a link to the supply list, it looks like the list says 50wt cotton thread. www.missouriquiltco.com/blogs/missouri-star-quilting-tutorials/hamilton-duffle-bag?Social&
More patterns are on order and expected in near the end of June. Put your email address on the green circle and you will be notified when they come in.. www.missouriquiltco.com/products/hamilton-travel-duffle-bag-pattern
See my reply to Sandy's comment on how I save money gathering my own hardware and supplies, there are lots of options for sourcing supplies that aren't as snazzy but still totally workable
I find it very durable. I have 3 kids and they drag my bags around (I don’t have feet on the smaller bags I’ve made) and so far nothing has been destroyed. I find the cork easy to wipe clean with a rag. I will say it’s easier to sew with an 80/12 microtex needle and it doesn’t fray at all like fabric but it’s also not easy to hide if you cut it uneven. Good luck!
It depends on the quality of the cork. The cheapest one mostly comes from China and cracks pretty quickly but the good quality cork, mainly from Portugal, looks like new, no cracking, for a long time
@@willebij So sorry you feel that way. It’s not politics, it’s just remembering the price that has been paid through the years so we can enjoy the freedoms we have. Sally Tomato is so calming to watch and she instills confidence.
Thank you so much for your wonderful comments. We appreciate you watching. Happy Sewing! -from Jess & the Sallie Tomato Team
Jessica makes the most complicated bag look so easy. I love the cork as an accent around the zippers and pockets.
She always makes her projects look so easy! I love it but also hate it bc when I do it there’s many more choice words said 😆

Wow!❤
Love this pattern. What is finished size? Patterns are OS on a wait list.
When working with the foam should i use a walking foot
The MSQC website is out of the pattern. Is this going to be available by PDF?
Can i ask what size/type needles do you use for bag making?
Brilliant bag, just wondering if there will be a digital version of the pattern? Hoping to avoid postage to the UK. Thank you 🙂
Looks like the Casey but larger. The Casey is a great duffel bag.
Agreed! Did you make a Casey and if so did you use the recommended cork/nonwoven fabric for the accents, or did you substitute something else?
@@hey_virginia yes l have made two. Used faux leather for trim on both. Used light weight canvas for fabric and lining.
@@robingoldsmith2491 ooo faux leather and canvas sounds like a lovely combo! Nice!
Does the Casey have a luggage strap?

What would be the washing instructions for that bag?

What kind of thread are you using? Looks like Isacord?
I don't see what the stabilizer is that goes on the bottom. Is it just foam?

18 hours and pattern is already sold out maybe next time I can get the pattern when a video comes out bag is so cute
What weight thread and needle size wiuld you use ?
I know Jess usually recommends an 80/12 microtex needle but I’m not sure about the thread - would be interested in the answer as well :)
That is so cute! But the kit is $149 and doesn’t even include the fabrics???
There are a lot of pieces to this bag. The kit makes it easier to gather supplies.
