    If you have 11V or lower on your battery it does not necessarily mean that battery not functioning properly. It could be a generator fault, it could be discharged by other equipment or frequent starting.

      If you want to check battery. You do not use multimeter. First you must charge battery with battery charger. If battery do not charge it is bad. When battery is charged you test it with charge tester then confirm if it is bad or good. More advanced way of testing battery is by using programmable load. You can measure what is capasity of battery.

    So think twice before installing overpowered amps/subwoofers on stock battery and alternator... and maybe even throw in huge capacitor just to have one extra device for your vehicle to charge like it's not enough already :D There's just not so much it can provide extra taken into account what the car needs for itself.

    The alternator charging will turn on and off while driving - the voltage regulator does this, to prevent from overcharging the battery. You can usually see the battery level gauge on dash move back and forth a little while driving. This will tell you charging system is working...if it doesn't, you may soon have a low volt situation...engine likely to start running erratically (as fuelpump and fuel injectors begin to falter).👍
    Be familiar with your battery gauge operation and always monitor it while driving - that's what it's for!

      Unless the car has a manual transmission....you can "pop start" the engine if the car be pushed in nuetral...get it rolling then with transmission in 2nd gear (best of all) and clutch pedal held down...release clutch to turn engine. It's a good reason why I like manual shift vehicles (all 3 of my vehicles are).👍

    • @s.j.5850
      @s.j.5850 3 роки тому +2

      Definitely! Just checking the voltage of a battery is not enough. You have to put a load on it to see if it can push those amps (for starting / turning over the engine) without faltering. Let's us not forget to have those battery cables & terminals clean & shiny & tight as well for starting. Small but critical details that are sometimes overlooked by the average car owner.

    • @raybin6873
      @raybin6873 3 роки тому

      @@s.j.5850 Paying attention to how well the starter cranks the engine can provide clue on battery condition...when slower cranking speed is noticed, that can indicate end of battery life is near (especially if charging voltage is normal).

    the battery's current is measured in amps, and the voltage is fixed at 12V, for example .When we consume power from a 20A battery, we consume amperes , not voltages, so why do we measure the voltage instead of measuring the current?sorry if my question is stupid, but I'm just confused

    • @KeithWhittingham
      @KeithWhittingham 2 роки тому

      Good question. 1/ The battery provides a pretty well constant voltage with a large capacity to provide current so - a really good power supply. 2/ While a generator can provide electricity on it's own, an alternator can't - it needs a currently flow to produce power. You could, in theory build in large capacitors so that you could remove the battery when running but you would need to start the engine with a battery.

    I have seen that you can test a battery admittedly an AA one with a 100ohm (5W) resistor in series with the multimeter set to current (amps) can you do this with a car battery to test how good the battery is??

    • @Total-Solutions
      @Total-Solutions 3 роки тому

      Using the AA battery as an example, that small battery would deliver a peak output about 4 amps for your test, 3-5 secs. The good car battery would deliver approx 700 amps or more. Do not attempt this as your connect leads will melt and your test meter could blow up in our face. The good battery will continue to deliver 100's of amps for some time. In your example of the AA battery consider to place the 100 ohms resistor across the battery terminals and safely measure the Voltage (rather than the current). Just measure the voltage with no load and then with the resistor. It's a judgment call to say if the battery is then good or not. 1.6v no load and 1.4v with load, its good. 0.95v no load and 0.6 loaded, not good.
      Why the difference ? Consider an additional resistor of hundreds of ohms inside the battery than start out being 0.005 ohms and over time goes up in value to 100 ohms. That internal resistance prevents the current flowing, as the battery ages.

    • @karhukivi
      @karhukivi 3 роки тому

      @@Total-Solutions A 100 Ohm resistor will not test a car battery, nor will it draw 700A. By Ohm's law the current I = V/R = 12/100 = 120mA.

      Starters are gear driven and mesh to the engines flywheel or flex plate (depending on the transmission type). Using the starter as an alternator would require constant engagement of those teeth and would be noisy and wear out the gears. The alternator is belt driven and would require a substantial belt capable of transferring high torque to start the engine. A belt system heavy enough would be a bigger parasitic drag on the engine as it is running as compared to a normal serpentine belt driving the alternator. You'd also need to deal with the current flow coming from the battery on startup and then switching to current going back to the battery if you used a starter / alternator combo.

  • @USAV3T

    you say that once the car is running that the electrical needs of the vehicle are powered from the alternator but doesn't the battery continue to run all the electrical needs of the car always and the alternator is just providing more current to the battery for those needs as well as charging needs?

    • @VictorGonzalez-mi5kd
      @VictorGonzalez-mi5kd 3 роки тому

      No as much as I understand. If you disconnect the battery of your car, when the engine is running, it will continue running due the alternator will supply the energy for the engine.

    • @karhukivi
      @karhukivi 3 роки тому

      @@VictorGonzalez-mi5kd The battery helps to stabilise the voltage at around 12V. If you remove the battery with the engine running the voltage will increase to 14.4V or even higher and this will help burn out the lights and other devices sooner than they should. I burnt out my radio because of a higher than normal charging voltage.

    • @ruan2587
      @ruan2587 3 роки тому +2

      There is nothing like a stupid question :) Nobody knows everything and always learn, but no you won't shock as the voltage is too low. Need much higher DC voltage closer to 50-100V to feel it and be dangerous. So for a 12V battery you are safe.

    One thing that doesn't quite make sense is when both the alternator and battery are powering electrical components simultaneously, how can current travel in both directions in the negative ground battery cable connecting to the vehicle chassis??? If the alternator is charging the battery, then you have current going to the chassis from the negative battery terminal to be grounded but if the battery is also powering electrical components you have current flowing back to the battery from the negative ground cable to the negative battery terminal. How can you have current flowing in both directions at the same time??? I do not think the electrical demands of the vehicle will ever reach the point where the battery will kick in to aid the alternator in powering those components. Aren't alternator max amperage close to 100A. Can someone please explain this to me, would greatly appreciate it.

      Not by much, on idle revs the alternator is producing optimum voltage, it may increase very slightly with higher rpm but the electronics in the alternator remove excess voltage.
      When jump starting, I leave the engine on idle.

    • @techalyzer

      This is pretty easy to test by yourself, just get a multimeter, on a well functioning alternator you won't see much difference at all. The alternator has a built in voltage regulator, otherwise when speeding up you'd fry all the lightbulbs and all the electronics. :)

    A charged car batterie puts out at least 12.6v.
    With the fuel pump fuse removed: -
    The battery voltage drops during cold cranking to around 10v.
    Cold cranking voltage varies with the temperature of the battery.
    A good battery will go back to 12.6v quickly once you stop cranking.
