Only Japan and the United States have fought such a battle between aircraft carriers.
As a Japanese, I was amazed at the courage of the carrier-based aircraft crew in either country.
The courage of the crew to jump into such a fierce anti-aircraft carrier is tremendous.
Unfortunately, that courage was used to kill each other.

I never thought about it in the way you say. It is correct.
Only USA vs Japan for carrier battles. Amazing observation.
The way the tracers appear in the sky, how did anyone live over 2 minutes? Seems impossible.

And yet, as cinematically stunning and intense as these battle scenes are depicted,

@@colinwhyte1526 The problem with your statement is that you're judging a movie that would require numerous aircraft that no longer exist to pull it off in a 'fully realistic' fashion. They cannot do the practical effects of slightly older movies because they simply do not have the actual real life planes to pull it off in, and to try and use models would look even more fake then CGI would.
Barring that...this movie has done a far better job in portraying just what kind of hell these pilots went through trying to get to the targets. Flying through a hailstorm of bullets and flak that is exploding all around you as planes around you burst into flames or are ripped apart, falling from the sky like so many dead leaves, all while you're praying that you don't get hit. Every other movie shows the flak of feels like a single ship trying to hit an airplane and never truly show what it'd be like when an entire fleet is trying to swat you out of the sky. This movie captured that, and did so with the best that they had available to them to do it.

      @jmrodas9 3 роки тому +3

Of course not, the feeling of seeing friendly planes being shot down, the fear of being hit, the sensations of the pullout which caused some to lose vision temporarily, are things we as spectators can never experience.

Also, when they were doing the bomber runs, there was just one thought constanty running through my mind: how the hell did real american pilots manage to go through all that flak cannon fire. I mean, it's insane that they managed to pull it off. And still, here we are today, living our lives better because of those brave pilots of ww2 who went to battle and maintained the supremacy in the skies of Europe, Pacific and North Africa.

There was zero attention paid to the larger story of the scouting, and how the battle came together. It’s classic Roland Emmerich CGI, but despite his lack of substance in other projects, the CG was one of many very deep elements in this movie, especially in the film’s “direct-to-history” plot. Honestly, despite calling some of his previous work “guilty pleasures,” like 2012, this movie (along with Independence Day) are the only two I have sincere respect for. Like if this guy put this level of effort into a Battle Off Samar movie and focused heavily on the battle itself, I’d let him be my child’s godfather. Thank you F ZERO for showing me just how terrible this movie was. I had skipped it because I saw inaccuracies in the previews and now seeing even more inaccuracies despite the trumpeted "historical accuracy".
This wasn't a movie, it was a video game. Granted, you are not going to find WW2 ships laying about nowadays, but there are over 300 WW2 aircraft today that is airworthy. This movie didn't even try.
Yes, this movie paved a path from Pearl Harbor to Midway, but if you are going to call a movie Midway, how about showing important aspects?
      1) The Tokyo raid by Doolittle and his B-25 bombers did set the stage for the battle but it finally gave Yamamoto the impetus to push for an attack on Midway.
      2) Strategy sessions by the Japanese included wargaming a decoy attack on Alaskan bases to draw off American carriers.
      3) The code breakers figuring out what the Japanese were up to.
      4) The USS Yorktown was badly damaged in the battle of the coral sea and there was an incredible effort to make her seaworthy in just 3 days-just in time for the midway battle.
      5) The attack on the Alaskan bases.
      6) The continuous patrols by American PBY's with the three incomplete spottings and the one well done spotting report.
      7) Yes, Midway had an air wing that did attack the japanese fleet, but this movie got the planes ALL WRONG.
      8) The japanese attack on Midway-obsolete American fighter planes bravely tried to defend the island and many of them were shot down.
      9) The tit for tat air attacks between American and Japanese carriers and the strategy-even though both navies were groping in the dark.
      Thanks again F ZERO.

Most of our pilots would probably have miss identified it as it didn't even have a code name assigned to it. Surviving Army Ace Major Yohei HInoki flew one for the 2nd Daitai, 111th Sentai, during the final month of the war, as an instructor after having his leg shot off in an Oscar by a P51. He got most of his kills in a Ki43 Oscar which he described as a "disaster". Maybe some in a Ki27 Nate over Burma.
He claimed a P51 kill while flying a Ki100 with his class one day which he thought might've been Captain John Benbow of 457th Squadron, 505th Group who was MIA. I personally thought, from the sound of all accounts, it more likely to be one of the shot up P51s from the 21st or 506th FG that returned to base as neither HInoki or his students had any opportunity to follow it for a confirmation. Unconfirmed over claims during a frenetic air battle were very common on both sides.

Also, during Midway, the American carriers launched Wildcats that provided some fighter cover. By the end, the Americans lost one carrier while the Japanese lost all four along with several over heavy ships.

Some who have flown combat missions, say that as you close on the target, and your vision narrows, that there is a slow motion effect, that you note the AA rounds and trace fire coming by you, pieces flying off the planes being hit, and even movement on the decks when you are close enough. I like the pilot's eye sort of viewpoint. I was concerned at first since the video seemed to concentrate on the Pearl Harbor battle which the USA certainly did lose.
It was typical of WWII attacks by airplanes that were not Dive bombers, when the Japanese fleet at speed in the ocean was able to avoid damage from the land-based bombers that were flown from Midway. I don't recall any similar attacks on warships that were successful during WWII.
The carnage the U.S. Torpedo squadrons suffered was realistic and brutal, but it was part of war. The U.S. Navy had not yet learned the value of coordinated attacks with fighter protection, from the squadrons of different carriers. Fortunately for the U.S., the IJN was focused on highly coordinated mass attacks with carrier groups, but did not hold back one carriers deck for supporting Combat Air Patrol flights for an extended period of time, especially when attack sorties were returning to their home ships, low on fuel, tired and maybe damaged.

Shipboard anti-aircraft guns were almost completely ineffective - when the Yamato was sunk, it and its 9 escort ships were all bristling with anti-aircraft guns. Four-hundred American planes attacked, sinking the Yamato and 5 other ships, for the loss of only 10 planes. In the battle of Midway, almost all the American planes shot down were from Japanese planes. Also, US dive bombers didn't drop 10,000 napalm bombs, not every shot fired was a tracer round, etc.

The more you know : they got the B-26 attack wrong. They didn't bombed from high altitude, it was actually twelve USAAF B-17. They were flying so high that they weren't bothered by the AA. However, it gave enough time to the Japanese to anticipate and dodge the bombs. The B-26 (four of them) attacked at low attitude with six TBF Avengers. Two B-26 were shot down during their torpedo run. One of them attempted to ram Akagi, but ultimately failed. Another one, _Suzie Q_ straffed Akagi, shooting two crewmembers. _Suzie Q_ and the remaining B-26 managed to return to Midway, depsite suffering catastrophic damages.

I don't want to waste my time, ears and eyes watching this movie. Even CGI beats this. But this is a videogame. The SBD bombers released their bombs from a 70 degree dive at 3000 ft typically but as low as 1500 ft. They would pull out at 500 ft., I guess that wasn't dramatic enough for the movie. There were 4 B-26 bombers attacking the Japanese fleet with torpedoes. They did not perform level bombing attacks as shown in the movie. B-17s attacked from high altitude but the maneuvering ships were not hit, but no B-17 was hit either. 2 of the 4 B-26 bombers failed to return to Midway and the 2 that did were badly damaged, over 500 bullet holes were counted in one of them. One of the 2 surviving B-26 bombers flew down the deck of one of the aircraft carriers with the bombardier strafing the ship as they barrelled down the deck (wounding two Japaneses gunners and temporarily knocking out an AA turret). This could have been a dramatic bit for the movie but was not included. One B-26 nearly hit the conning tower of one of the carriers as shown in the movie before it crashed into the sea. No one knows what happened to the 4th B-26. For the torpedo to be effective the bombers had to slow to about 120 mph and release at about 100 feet, making the bombers easy targets for ship gunners and Zero fighters. Of 47 SBD Navy dive bombers, 18 were lost, some running out of fuel and having to ditch. 39 Navy torpedo bombers were lost.

Most of the dive bombers are believed to have arrived and attacked relatively unmolested,, The torpedo bomber had just finished their disastrous runs and been annihilated by the Zeroes, but left no protection above. The Japanese "Kate" torpedo bombers were the most deaaly weapon of the Japanese air, so naturally the one they originally feared most. Ironically they barely got close enough to even launch.

The majority of the american losses were due to the japanese fighters. Only one plane was downed due to AA fire.

The Kate wasn't a significant improvement compared to the Devastator. The one thing it had in it's favor was a torpedo that could be air launched at a higher altitude and faster speed. But when met with fighter opposition (CAP) they too were shot down in great numbers.

In history, when the bombers arrived targets, the fighters were lost. So that's why the torpedo bombers were easily vanished by Zero because they had no protection.

Love the movie but it has two problems...One) USN fighters are nearly not shown at all in the movie (and the Wildcats, led by people like Butch O hare) were pretty lethal at Midway (both Marine and USN). and the Dauntless was a hell f a dive bomber and with a pair of .50's in the nose there were FOUR aces in Dauntlesses! An SBD would normally run, but a well driven dauntless would make a mess out of Japanese formations.

Yeah… There was so much going on at that time and so many details that there’s no way they could get the movie done if they tried to cover everything... To get the script sold to the board members they had to cut corners… Come in under budget… And hopefully have a good turn out. Unfortunately I think marketing really let them down on this one because there’s a large segment of the audience that just wants to be entertained myself included.
I don’t know much about history except what I see on like history channel which is always biased. Worldwide I believe the movie came in just Enough to make a profit.
Many people have complained about the CGI aspect and the overdone graphics but that’s what it takes to sell movie these days. The younger generations don’t give a damn about history. And frankly neither do I. I want to be entertained when I sit in that seat… I mean no disrespect but that’s the bottom line for many people

@@RAZR_Channel Read some famous fiction (ANY James Bond (Ian Flemming) book or Tom Clancy) and just see what ended up on the screen (pretty sad really, not bad...but not the books by a moon shot), but to make Red Storm Rising would cost half a BILLION dollars to make! And most Bond movies have just the names in common with the stories (view to a kill was a 36 page short story).

Was the Japanese AA really that thick? I’ve read their point defenses were actually pretty weak, at least compared to US’s. Their best defense appeared to be Zero interceptors. But don’t misunderstand me, even if AA was minimal all those guys in the attack planes were very brave.

Yeah… And these aircraft was pretty crude… Those pilots that did this really had some nerve. I think the copilot/tailgunner had it even worse because he has no control over the situation. If they’re in a dive in the pilot gets shot he’s done there’s nothing he can control except bail out and that would probably be in enemy waters
