    I'm also keeping a Cannondale Caad12 with sram red/force22 for hillclimbs or a PRs. Weight is 6.8kg with clincher carbon wheels, as my frame itself weighs just 1070g in size 54 and fork if i correctly remember 340g it is very competitive to many carbon bikes out there. For general riding it feels too stiff though, as i got used to a bmc teammachine.

    I can´t understand why Andrew Feather not riding a complete tricked out bike. I mean he is riding to win.
    He has no bar tape but there are so many parts on the bike where he could save weight. Even the wheels are not really light. There are 930g wheels from different brands with carbon spokes. Sub 6kg disk brake bikes are no problem these day even with 28mm tyres. There is a bike shop in Austria which has built an Orbea Orca with 5,5kg and still room to save weight.

    I would like to have seen flat bar handlebars, (more) dyneema spokes and 650B tyres there. IMHO you can get the power down better with flat bars and you can't get much lighter than dyneema spokes and if you are doing a dedicated climb then 650B wheels/tyres give you both lower weight and lower gearing.

    • @stevemawer848
      @stevemawer848 8 місяців тому

      Flat bars prevent you getting your hands and arms into an aero position - why do you think Feather uses "proper" bars?

    • @Alan_Hans__
      @Alan_Hans__ 8 місяців тому

      You may not have noticed that Andrew Feather spends a fair portion of time out of the saddle in an entirely non aero position. There is also a couple of shots of riders standing out of the saddle. There's also shots of the drops that have been chopped off as a weight saving measure. If you've seen any footage of the event like on Peak Torque's channel you'll see that no-one uses the drops, an aero tuck isn't a thing and standing up out of the saddle is virtually the norm.

    I've been riding road bikes over a decade but i have to admit some of the terminology you used i've never heard before so i've got a few questions;
    When you say 'tubs' do you mean tubular on the wheels? Or are you using that to refer to the whole wheel and tyre?
    Then, on the second bike you mention 'rear' block, is that just the rear cassette? Never heard anything on a bike referred to as a 'block' so i am just guessing.
    Also, on the white bike with the custom paint job what's a 'narrow-wide' setup? I assume the gear positioning? What are the advantages of that to a hill climbing specialist?

      Tubs as in Tubular tyres, although you need specific rims to glue them on. A block is an old word for a cassette. Most common would be a straight through 13-19 block. Narrow wide is the chainring. The teeth alternate between widths meaning the chain is retained without falling off.

    Do you have to run front and rear brakes on hillclimb?

    • @wearejames1
      @wearejames1 8 місяців тому +1

      I think you have to run front and rear brakes unless you are on a fixed wheel bike, when you can just run a front brake.
      Who would be mad enough to do a hill climb on fixed wheel bike??😂🙄

    After all the weights from this video and others... I guess most peoples bikes weigh more than they'd like to admit, myself included.
    Getting sub 17lbs with a full off the shelf group-set (Not 1x), and without sacrificing things like saddle comfort, bar tape and bottle cages is tough.
    You could easily spend 1k in carbon parts (Saddle, bars, stem, seat post) but damn....

      It's very easy to get carried away with finding the lightest parts possible 🙌 It's not always the most important part of the bike, for most rides comfort and aero dynamics will equal more speed!
