I took an unintended mini retirement last year when I was laid off and 3 years ago before starting a new job. Each time I had 1-2 months off and it was wonderful. ❤
So funny this popped up for me. I am taking a year off from teaching for every one of the reasons you mentioned. I have been terribly burnt out and find myself frazzled and impatient. My husband just retired (he is older than me and not in the best health). I am afraid if we do not take some time together now, he will not be able to travel with me later. I also want the energy and time to focus on my own health. I am a little worried about money, but I am excited about the time to devote to myself for a change. This was an affirming video for me. Good for you for taking the time, especially when you can do it together. What do you have planned for the year (if anything yet)? Many of us, including us, worry about money to some degree. That is natural and there are ways to work through those emotions.
I am really lucky. I have a cousin who flys for American. She is taking me to Greece in a few weeks. My husband and I are going to take our dog and hope to hit the Redwood Forests, Bryce Canyon and the Utah National Parks, and Yellowstone. Those are some of the tentative plans.
Amazing! Glad to hear you have some plans, but enough space in there to recover. We loved southern Utah, and are going to the Redwoods NP soon. We just hit up Humboldt Redwoods state park which was magnificent.
Major challenges are that it’s very difficult to get a new job when one is older (over 40 or 50),, and employers are suspicious of long breaks in employment. Taking breaks at younger ages could work.
Yes, I’ve heard this as well, but there are ways to work around this if a break is really important to you. Someone could work with their employer to take a mini retirement as a leave of absence, so that they could return to the same job. Alternatively, in preparing for a break, they could also increase their savings to prepare for a longer time to get a new job. I do think difficulty in getting a new job will depend on your experience and industry.
I think doing an entire video of different ways to fund it would be great. I would recover from burnout and tend to my health. I wish I had more than 1500 in my taxable!! All my money is locked up in my 403b and I'm 39. I'd need to save up 30k fist...

I would need to save enough to continue to make mortgage payments while I was not working for 6 months or else have my mortgage paid off already. The housing expense usually is where the bulk of our paychecks go :o)

I think I will mini retire to work on my health and finish taking care of a parent. Then I will change job and location. Do seasonal jobs and travel!

Been doing this for most of my life. I got the idea from a Money Magazine article back in 2001. Best read ever!
