- The entire world thought pantera was done forever with the Abbott brothers died. Through a miracle, St. Philip Anselmo has resurrected the group with a new lineup. Charlie Benante on drums and Zaak Wylde grinding the six string. Here's the thing...is Zaak Wylde qualified to carry on Dimebag's legacy? Can he do justice to the brilliant work of art that is Dime's guitar playing? Today we'll find out if Zaak can resurrect the ghost of Dimebag Darrell with a live performance of Cowboy's From Hell

Zakk Wylde and Charlie Benante are the perfect choices for the Abbott Brothers! I saw Pantera open up for Metallica in August and they killed it!
Saw them in Amsterdam, great show!
Which venue??

Pantera will Never be the same without Vinnie and Dimebag, but I can't think of two better musicians to show respect for them!! Respect to Charlie and Zakk
Pretty sure that Zakk made it apparent that he wasngonna do tribute as best as he could while still being Zakk, rather than trying to completely mimic Dime.
The click bait titles bro. C’mon, your content is great. You don’t need to stoop to that level
A New Level?????
Why the need for the insulting click bait title? Calling Zak a "disgrace" because he doesn't copy Dime's sound and style? That's bullshit. Anybody who wants a carbon copy should buy the albums. Zak interprets Panteta with his own style and that's what I want to hear. He's doing a great job.
This your first Shred video?
Agreed - clickbait title. But we watched apparently…
@sjaw10 Shred doesn't need cheap gimmicks to draw views. I thought he was above that. I guess I was wrong.
@joshgriffiths3500 I've seen him get clickbaity before but nothing this blatant. Sometimes he'll have a provocative title with a question mark at the end which is a clear heads up he's fucking with us. But to call a great guitar player a flat out disgrace? That's low even for Shred.
@@blunderless sure.
It would suck to see someone else up there filling in for dime trying to clone his exact note for note shredding….might as well have a backing track of dimes recorded parts playing with Phil and Rex….super glad Wylde is killin it with his own flair while still keepin the overall concept….and same for Charlie….2 of the best possible picks to fill their shoes!!
problem is dime has always been a better guitarist compared to anyone, even zakk who is not in his prime anymore. I guess late 90's zakk would def kill it...only rhoads could fit dime shoes and play as great as dime in his own style..At least zakk had the balls to fill in a metal god place
Id rather see a video of dime and a backing track then this bs
Charlie does run Vinnie’s drum tracks with his playing
Cant do him injustice ither or the crowd but to see zak do dime his way is wise
Zakk is the best substitute for Dime, they were both good friends and Zakk's style has similarities to Dime's, possibly due to their love of country music. I remember hearing Dime's solo on Hard Lines, Sunken Cheeks and thinking how much it sounded like something Zakk would have wrote.
A phone recording doesn’t do Zakk Justice. I saw them in Denver and they killed it. Sounds crazy but Zakk seemed like he improved from the last time I saw him with Ozziy
Saw the lineup live. Honestly one of the best shows i've seen in my life.
I saw Pantera with the brothers 6 times and this legacy lineup was great. Different but still great. Imagine all the new fans seeing them for the first time.
Badass shows even without the brothers
Yup same
same for me! it was pure magic. Loved every minute of it
If this was one of your best shows, then you must not go to many shows. It doesn't even sound like dime on the guitar.
I think Zach tuned down to accommodate Phil’s vocal range.
Exactly. Some stuff had to be transposed down to accommodate Phil's vocal range nowadays.. He's not exactly a spring chicken anymore. 😅
Just saw Pantera live and they was absolutely incredible.
Not like Zakk has already made a career of taking over for guitar gods with Randy Rhoads…
Well Randy was on another planet compaired to zakk squeal they wouldnt do that to zepplien wild..zakk is childs play to Randy
Hey, I was there at this show and you’re right…Charlie stole the show!He sounded absolutely amazing live and as a bass player myself I have to say Rex’s tone was phenomenal! Phil sounded much better than I expected…Zack did great all things considered. It will never be “Pantera“ without the Abbot bros, but I’m most definitely glad I saw the next best thing 🤘🏼
I was there too up on the rail. Had been standing there all day
I was most surprised by how well Phil was singing after all these years.
Zakk and Charlie both are the only ones for this line up. Phil, Rex, Charlie, & Zakk!! 🤘🏼🔥🎸
Taco bell came back with a vengeance last night and this morning!! I think I did some damage to the ozone layer....😂
Thought I smelt something funny in the air..
🤣🤣🤣
Phil looks and sounds surprisingly good
saw them in the ressurectionfest in spain. I am so incredibly happy i had the opportunity to see them, and sure, zakk has his own flare, but if you actually heard that tone live, you would definitely love it.
We all know it's not Pantera, but for someone like myself who never got to see Pantera live I would love to just have the live music
I saw them and they were still good. Phil’s voice sounds good too
2:20 what you said about the upstrokes is 100% correct, I don't even listen to Pantera, only know a couple songs, but Dimebag's bouncy pick technique is just iconic
Fair assessment there.
While Phil still sounds throaty, his voice naturally is deeper these days. Is Zakk's sound typically pitched downward to account for that and to match better, and we don't get to hear the extreme Dime squeals as a result?
Obviously, Zack and Dime's soundscapes over the years didn't/don't have the same vibe. A dilemma for the Pantera quasi-return is that Zakk spiritually, so to speak, would be one of the only players in the world that could play the role. But he sounds different from Dime.
However, if Phil and Rex were to have hired a sort of unknown Dime clone, or even a bigger name who could clone but wasn't buds, then the project probably would have been even more polarizing than it became anyway.
They were blessed that Charlie fit in all of the ways. Zakk stepped in and took the heat, as well as accolades, depending on the listener. He's one of the best axe wielders that fans will ever get to hear live, and his heart comes through.
Awesome comment brother
Couldn’t have said it better, bro
The abbot brothers are what made Pantera, still, better than not having anymore Pantera concerts
Really? Because Pantera was lame before Phil got there.
Pantera was all fucking four together and the fans. Not just the abbot brothers.
True, phil made Pantera which we know of@@1848revolt
Pantera was literal glam metal before Phil arrived.
Literally they wouldn't be as popular as they were if it wasn't for Phils exhorder style influence.
I hate that argument so much like even rex Is an incredible musician who can play piano and other instruments he was a huge part of the song writing with dime too.
The abbot brothers were not pantera. Just stop that shit.
@@1refi the glam era was still fire, Phil just suggested they go heavy, the Abbott brothers done it
Saw them at sofi with Metallica and it was great seeing Pantera 2.0! Zakk and Charlie filling the void with honor.
I fucking hate that he doesn't do the slide like Dime in the Walk solo
The remark about Dimebag's up-stroke hit the right spot for me to understand the difference in feel and lack of groove of the rhythm of Zack. He's not bad, but ok as a "stand-in". You really can't blame someone for not equaling in performance to someone like Dimebag.
Travelled from Ireland to Amsterdam to see them. Worth every cent.
I went to the real Pantera shows. I will never go to this blasphemy brother said himself. I will not have Pantera without my brother.
6:46 really beautifully said!!!!!! long live the memory of Dimebag Darrell!!!
DUDE!!!!!!! I WAS THERE!!!!!! I've been waiting so long for you to do a review of a video of a show I was at!!!! Fuck yeah!!!!!
Charlie had his drums set up the way Vinnie did. So it would force him to play like him . Watch the Rick Beato interview
The reason Charlie can replicate Vin’s sound is he’s using samples of Vin’s drums which were provided to him.
If you have time, watch the Rick Beato Pantera interview. Lots of insight into the tour. The big takeaway from Zakk and backed up by Rex, is that no one expects him to replicate Dime. He’s playing the tunes the way Zakk would.
a little overstated ,hes using a little of his drum sample in the mix
It’s also tuned down a good bit from the original. So it sounds off too.
it sounds like shit
Alpha vs. Alpha

UP & COMING ROCKET SCIENTIST.
He gave it a good shot. But it will be short-lived and forgotten. He still hasn't painted his Pacaso yet
I’m a proud Berserker.. Zakk is the man, dime would tell you the same
Dimebag was great but people keep forgetting he had to take over randy Rhoades
is this a reupload? I feel like ive seen this already
Zaak is like : "Finally I get the chanse to prove to all I can shred for longer than Dime" stomping on his legacy, please kick him PhilSelmo
Would the song really sound worse with the lead up even a half step from here just becuase Phil's voice is deeper?
I like Zakk but I think Wes Hauch would’ve been a better fit.
Are they in a different key?
Yes and its the biggest crime of all.
can ya do more scale lessons n stuff like that? i've been teaching myself guitar since may 2022 and started watching your videos a little before that. i can say without a doubt i wouldn't be playing like i am if i hadn't studied your lessons on scales/modes and all that. i just learned how to play floods including the solo w harmonics. not perfected at all but i'm super stoked, keep it up masta shred
What kind of video title is this bro ?
I was half expecting Zakk to start back up again after the full stop. I love Zakk and I'll watch him shred pentatonic for many minutes, but there is a limit. Probably like 7 minutes, you've played all the notes man, there isn't anything left at that point.
You're analysis is right on. Especially Zack and Dimes difference of groove.
Saw them live they all sounded amazing .
however, the greatest big-ups to Charlie!!!! he´s doing a fantastic job!!! Minchia!
Summed it up perfectly even though it was not Dime and Vinnie up there, when I saw them live I was worried but some of the songs sounded perfect. Im broken was particularly insane between the drum work and bass lines definitely did a great job.
I've written this many times. He just doesn't have the 16th scale groove
they are not trying to replicate it.
its a celebration of Pantera.
If you are going to cry the guitar tone is different, just listen to the original recording since that is what you want to hear.
Try actually watching the vid next time 🤦♂️
NO FIGHTING! 😡 Now both of you apologize to each other.
I've been to 2 shows. One headliner in Virginia Beach and the other was at an opener for Metallica in St Louis and they sound fucking awesome both times. Just bought ticket to another show in Nashville in February, super stoked to see them again.
Besides we all know for a fact, if Dime could have picked his own replacement, it would have been Zack.
Sounds great to me..... damn great indeed.
The question is, will we see a new recording from this Pantera line-up by year's end? An EP even?
Not possible without Dime and Vinnie.
Nope
Dude no one can ever replace dime the guitar used to talk him the guitar was part of him but zak wylde credit is due he said from the get o i will never skund like dime but he was my brother and ill love to play for his legacy and his memories and fair play to Zakk
Honestly I appreciate zakks originality when it comes to his contribution to this tribute. Trying to replicate something so natural that came from another persons soul would just come across as unauthentic and fake imo.
100%
I came across your mama & just wasn't the same...
It will only upset the people who get it. No real fan would ever have a problem with Zakk being in Pantera. A real fan would welcome Zakk's tone and style into Pantera.
Saw pantera on graspop and had a great time finally see these legendary songs live. Ofcourse zakk is not dimebag but we all know that. They do a good job for this tribute/reunion.
this is like a hollywood movie cast
i think dictionay succa such and such should have played da' part and fart
Kinda interesting that after the Abbott brothers died (RIP) Phil suddenly is into Pantera again, that's a dick move.
Seems like Phil enjoys being a dick.
He would be the only one that would do Dime totally right the fans are lucky this is happening and I got my 2 day pass for Seattle R.I.P.. Abbott brothers
After Dime died, I literally prayed as a kid for Pantera to continue with Zakk. Never thought it would happen…
Frankly, hearing everyone vomit out the “this isn’t Pantera” BS annoys me to no end. Especially if they’re someone who paid for tickets to go see them. Gatekeeper metal heads are memed on so hard because they suck. When these gatekeeper types lack self awareness and continue spewing their negativity, it makes them even worse.
this isn’t Pantera
@@Thijscube no sir its not. It's not even in the same zip code.
Vinnie would not go for this sorry.. it's a shame. Zakk is zakk and he fking rocks.. but this is all so wrong.
I guess shred never gets tired of clickbait and fan cams.
It was a great show. I had never seen Pantera live and was actually excited to see Zakk fill in. I wouldn't title your video as a disgrace to Pantera. They did very well after so many years but yes Zakk does do his own thing a little.
I was at Louder than Life and was so stoked, but slightly let down by Wylde.
Zakk is the only choice to fill in for his brother Dime! Love Zakk !
dime and Vinnie are dead and gone but they still live on in our hearts and with the music they made. I'm fine with that everyone should be
Wilde was hired because of marketing purposes, an unknown virtuoso guitar guy would have made no sense from the promotional perspective, that is why Wilde doesn't work for this band, he cannot fill the shoes of a monster like Darrell, solo was bad improv at best, guitar sound was a let down, I agree that Benante was and still an incredible musician.
First time I have heard this version, and DAMN!!! I'm in!!!
It's a tribute to the band , brothers & legacy. it's not Pantera.. They're not recording under the Pantera Brand.. Why is that so hard for people to understand.. Enjoy it while it last..
"YET."
Andy james is the 1 that can do it man 👍❤ not an easy thing to say ither i remember sweating my arse off jamming out to these albums when they came out in the early 90s
Zakk does definitely noodle a bit too much though.
Even his own solos have not been as good as they have been in the pride and glory era. This was click bait though, bro.
I was at this show, it was magic. I also saw them on the extreme steel tour, 2 totally different shows I admit, but both beautiful in there own way, Phil sounded amazing lastly!
No Abbotts... No Pantera.. Period. This should never have happened
They're probably wishing they were still alive so they could come down and fire up some of the biggest bottle rockets ever up Phil and Rex's opportunistic asses.
@@sloppycabi I'm legit disappointed that fans of the band legitimised this shit by attending shows.
@@PhantomDeth that makes 2 of us.
FKNEY❤ LOVE YOUR BALLS FOR SAYING SO!!!!!!!!
@@sloppycabi A friend of mine was in a few bands with Phil and he told me Phil was basically running out of money and this was the best idea to fix that problem.
congratulations if you can hear the guitar. i just hear drums
Yeah that rhythm section is sounding MASSIVE..kudos to Charlie, not to mention the sound folks..and Phil sounds amazing..I've never been much of a fan of Zakk's playing or tone as much as I've wanted to be..I think you're on to something with his sense of rhythm
Zaak must leave Pantera he dont deserve to belong to Pantera, he has a bad feeling Guitar and he is killing Dimebag legend!
And i thought Metallica endings were long in ‘89… this takes the cake 😅. I wish Zakk would at least play THIS solo closer to the way it was written… its fukin COWBOYS FROM HELL!.. 😂 oh well… sometimes you gotta settle for an offbrand when you can’t get the authentic. 😂 Still love Zakk in the early Ozzy era. 🍻🍻🍻🍻
I caught the band in November in Detroit, with Metallica. They got more energy out of the crowd than the main act did, probably due to it being the first Pantera concert in 20 years in the area. I thought the show was amazing. Charlie absolutely nailed it on drums, if you closed your eyes you may think Vinnie was there. Zakk was Zakk. He's a legend in his own right, and he does things his way. It was close enough to satisfy but definitely not meant to sound identical to Dimebag and I don't think there is anyone alive that COULD play identically to Dime.
Zach's tune is not E standard i think so it's sounds weird
Looks like Rex ditched the Thunderbird crap and went back to Spector.
Yeah gotta say Philip sounds really great, still can do the high screams well \m/ And yeah everyone sounds pretty good.
I like the idea of these guys having a band, my issue is calling it Pantera. No Abbott brothers no Pantera.
His guitar playing sound seems very low. Almost can’t hear it
Also, what happens when Phil and Rex retire? We gonna keep going like Skynard is doing?
Ronnie van Zant on tour next year!! ASK JUDY, MELODY & JOHNNY
Zakk* Wylde my friend.
Innocent youth talking about Zakk's tone not being the same as Dime's... 100000% sure they never saw Pantera live with Dime... It is nearly impossible to reproduce a studio guitar tone in a live environment...
Charlie's nailing Vinnie's drum sound is because he is using Vinnie's drum triggers...
There is no way I could handle Zack playing same licks over and over like that 1/2 the bands set, how irritating! Phil's getting pissed...if I was in charge and tours were done for a while I would walk up to Zack and say, FIRED!!!
Technically Zakk is better but he CAN'T and don't want to be Dime.
Idk about better, but he is more than capable of playing it just like the original. I wish he would
@@abfkwbdkdmggfilw-uv5bn Zakk can play absolutely anything. Plus shredding. For example hybrid picking. Im sure Dime couldn't play 10% of it. Zakk is somewhat underrated because of a music genre he chose. Some "mureecan, hard rock hillbilly metal. Not many can appreciate. it. Zakk is not playing tours with Steve Vai and Nuno for no reason. Btw you said, you wish he would? Thats why I said he DON'T WANT to be Dime.
I forgot the word used for people who judge other people's success when they themselves will never be in the same realm as these famous millionaires....
The Word is YEP...
I hear ya tho man
He definitely does not create that clear clean high tone. More grit n grime. That said Dime cannot be duplicated and incredibly if not impossible shoes to fill. That said Zak is absolutely doing it justice and playing it as written. Hats off to him as Zak has skin in the game in that Dime was truly his friend in life. I dont think anyone could do it better or give it more justice.
I'd remember giraffes but it was pretty boring after a couple of overdubs, worth not even recording the audio while shooting video...
Pantera Vol.2 is better than no Pantera! Zakk is kickin ass
Zak was dimes close friend , dime used to fill in for zak playing with ozzy , in my opinion hes paying tribute to dime in a respectful way .
No man will ever replicate dimes sound , give them dimes gear and it still wont sound like dime .
Name one time that happened
@@TheBestRoddy twice in Europe during late 90s early 2000s .
Rex is an awesome bassist.
I think the tone and Zakk playing his own solos is fine, what I think is just unprofessional is that Zakk straight up plays wrong notes on multiple riffs throughout the set.
