From one of the "Heifetz Hootenannies" - the relaxed multi-genre concerts held under a big tent on the Mary Baldwin University campus, 12-year-old violinist SoHyun Ko plays alongside HeifetzPEG faculty members Bela Horvath, violin, and Yoon Lee, piano in four of the charming "Five Pieces" by Dmitri Shostakovich, arranged for two violins and piano by the composer's longtime friend Lev Atovmyan.

@@vadinhopsc A decade ago a 36 month old child in South Korea was watching a video of a violin performance. Afterwards her Mom saw tears running down the toddler's cheeks. Her Mommy asked her why she was crying. The little girl said that the violin music made her heart feel hot. The wise and loving mother bought her a violin and found a teacher. That girl was Ko SoHyun!
I'm no violin expert, just an old man living in the Rocky Mtns, but every time I hear this amazing girl play my heart gets warmer and the tears run down my cheeks. After I dry my eyes the whole world seems a little brighter.
I'm not sure 100 years of practice could match her. Its more than skill or talent. It's that plus that special love she has for the music that adds the magical beauty to her performance. It comes from the heart 💓.
@@retiredteacher6289 Yes! You are absolutely right. SoHyun has something that's difficult to define. It is her perfection.... sure. Or maybe her notion of 'tempo'...sure. I was just watching the vídeo of the Nutcracker Competition in Russia. A boy played Zigeunerweisen. With orchestra. Perfect, sure, the notes were all there. However his timing was far away from SoHyun. She plays so clean, so neat so to speak. I watched her for the first time when she was 7. She was playing Praeludium et Allegro. So, there was that little girl giving all she could give, playing all she knew, doing her best of her best. Playing with all of her little body. I fell in love immediately, thinking: this little girl will be a huge star. Her passion will take her to shine in stages all around the world. Recently, another Young girl from Japan seems to play in complete fusion with the music. We can feel what she is feeling. Just 11 yro. Her name is Natsuho Murata. If you haven't seen her I suggest to take a look . Listening and watching her playing Scherzo e tarantella, by Wieniawski, is enthralling. By the way, Heifetz posted yesternight something called Heifetz Hootenanny - hope you have watched it. In case not, take a look. It's very funny to see SoHyun mocking her older colleagues. HAHA. But sure! Our short chat has been under the same vídeo Hootenanny. I was taking a look at her Zigeunerweisen vídeo again and I thought your first reply was there. I marvel at my stupidity sometimes. Anyways, I'll look for Coco. Thanks for the clue. You see, what seems to be a key for any performance to be more than just pleasant, in my opinion, is when the artist transmits to the audience what he or she is feeling. Stefan Jackiw, playing Brüch's Scottish Fantasy, for instance, does this to me . Or Bomsori Kim. And some others. Another outstanding Young artist is Alma Deutscher. Her debut at Carnegie Hall with live stream by Médici TV yesternight was fantastic. Consecretion at 14! I hope in the near future SoHyun records a CD. I'll import it from anywhere in the world. And of course I hope to see her at Carnegie too. Regards.

Yoon Lee is an amazing pianist in her own right. She was a special winner at the Anton Rubinstein International Piano Competition - is on the faculty at Juliard and several other institutions and has pretty much performed everywhere - and, oh yeah, she is often the pianist for many master classes taught by giants, including Itzhak Perlman - and she's an amazing dancer

These pieces are way above Suzuki 1. As far as I know there are no piece by Shostakovich in Suzuki book, at least until book 8, don't know about book 9-10.
