- It was a good break for me and my brother as both of us took time off to visit our Aunty in Nawalapitiya! Nawalapitiya is a very cold, misty, picturesque beautiful village surrounded by green mountains covered in thick white mist, located in the hill Capitol(Kandy) of Sri Lanka. It is a village completely different than of my native village Dankotuwa. Nawalapitiya is surrounded by high mountains and it’s very cold specially in the morning and at nights and frequently drizzling as well. The entire area is covered with lush green rain forest fauna and flora and gives you this unmistakable feeling of living in the midst of a rain forest! Like my native village produce abundant harvest of coconuts, this cold mountainous city produce freshly grown the most tastiest world famous Ceylon tea! A picture book city you may call it, is freezing during the rainy seasons and it was such a wise idea that grandmother didn’t come with us!
My aunty’s daughter, who is younger to me invited me to take a stroll with her to go and pick freshly grown Mandarin. As you know me, I jumped at that chance to go with her and it was an exciting and a enjoyable trip. The path was between the brightly green tea bushes, and cold breeze was brushing against my face as we walked towards the mandarin trees. It was a novel experience compared to our native village. But my friends I was very frightened of leeches as they are common in this parts of Sri Lanka. Brother was very eager to come with both of us to pick Mandarin but since I asked him to stay back, poor fellow was with a long and a frowning face for the entire morning! But later the most delicious sweet & sour chili mixed fruit salad that he made using Mandarin & many other fruits proved his loving sweet nature as always!
Since there were lots of mandarin left from our picking I decided to make a salty sour pickle from them. First I fried kochi chilies ( bird chillies) and cumin seeds and added to the boiled and quartered Mandarin incorporating them well. At Nawalapitiya coconut oil was always solidified because of the freezing weather. Their trick was to heat up the bottle above a flame or immersing the bottle in a half filled hot water bowl.
I tasted one of my Aunty’s remarkable cup of Mandarin tea as it will be an empty experience if one doesn’t taste one of Ceylon’s World famous cup of upcountry tea! My aunty is a very good cook and she proved her skills more by laying a scrumptious lunch table laden with yummy treats. Since my little Brother always needs to eat something that i make from my own hands, I deep fried prawns coated in egg wash, yoghurt, gram flour & breadcrumbs to make him happy too. I served the battered deep fried prawns in a green onion bed together with my previous day made mandarin salty sour pickle to add a bit of my touch to the lunch table. My aunt had made a delicious masala egg curry, potato white curry and a finely shredded cabbage leaf stir fry(Mallung). Everyone enjoyed my battered deep fried prawns and sweet & sour mandarin pickle as the two dishes complimented each other. Actually I wholeheartedly welcomed the hot rice in that cold weather as they warmed my body and soul both. I fell in love with Nawalapitiya and didn’t like to leave this cold mountainous fairy land with its own charm and Magic, hence we stayed for few more days before we bid our farewell to my Aunty and her family!

***Please find the English description in the description box*** මල්ලියි මායි පහුගිය සතියේ ගියා නාවලපිටිය අපේ නැන්දලගේ ගෙදර. නාවලපිටිය තියෙන්නේ අපේ රටේ මැද සීතල කඳුකර පළාතක. දංකොටුවේ අපේ ගමට වඩා හැම අතින්ම වෙනස්. තැනිතලාව වෙනුවට හැම පැත්තෙන්ම කඳු වලින් වට වෙලා. හැම වෙලාවෙම සීතලයි. විශේෂයෙන්ම රෑටයි උදේටයි. හැදෙන ගහකොල පවා වෙනස්. තද කොළ පාට වැසි වනාන්තරයක් මැද ඉන්නව වගේ. අපේ පළාතේ පොල් වගාව තියෙනවා වගේ ඒ පළාතේ වැඩිපුර තියෙන්නේ තේ වගාව. බොහෝම සරුසාර පළාත. මේ වගේ වැසි කාල වලට නම් සීතල දරාගන්න බැරි තරම්. අත්තම්මා ආවෙත් නැත්තේ ඒ නිසයි.
නංගියි (නැන්දගේ දුව) මායි ගියා නාරං කඩන්න. තේ වතු මැදින් සීතලේ ගිය ගමන හරිම ආස හිතෙනවා. ඒත් කූඬැල්ලන්ට තමයි මම බයම. මල්ලිත් අපේ පස්සෙන් වැටිල එන්න ඇහුවත් මම එපා කිව්ව නිසා නෝක්කාඩු වෙලා හිටිය්යේ. ඒත් නාරං එක්ක තව පළතුරු ජාති දාලා ලුණුයි මිරිසුයි ගම්මිරිසුයි සීනියි එක්ක මල්ලි හදපු අච්චාරුවේ නම් ඒ තරහා පොඩ්ඩක් වත් ගෑවිලා තිබුණේ නෑ. ඒ තරම්ම රසයි.
වැඩිපුර නාරං තිබුණ නිසා නාරං වලින් මම ලුණු දෙහි එකක් හැදුවා. සම්ප්‍රදායික ලුණු දෙහි දාන විදියට වඩා ඒක ටිකක් වෙනස්. කොච්චි මිරිස්, සූදුරු දෙකත් එක්ක පොල් තෙල් කර කරලා තම්බලා හතරට පලපු නාරං කැබලි වල දැවටෙන විදියට මිශ්‍ර කරගත්තා. එහේ පොල් තෙල් නම් සීතල නිසා හැම වෙලේම තියෙන්නේ මිදිලා. (ඝනකම් වෙලා) පාවිච්චියට ගන්න කලින් බෝතලේ ලිපට අල්ලලා රත් කරගන්න ඕනේ. කොච්චියි සූදුරුයි දෙකත් තෙලටම කර කරලා ඒ මිශ්‍රණේ නාරං කැබල්වල දවට ගත්තම අමුතුම සැරකුයි රසකුයි එකතු වෙනවා.
පහු වෙනිදා උදේ නැන්දා නාරං දාලා තේ හදලා තිබුණා. නාවලපිටියේ ගිහිල්ලත් ඉතිං සීනි අඩුවෙන් දාපු හොඳ ceylon tea එකක් බිව්වෙ නැත්නම් වැඩක් නැහැ. නැන්දා දවල් කෑම මේසෙත් බොහෝම සරුවට ලෑස්ති කරලා තිබුණා. මල්ලිට මගේ අතින් හදපු දේකුත් කන්න ආස නිසා මම ඉස්සෝ, කඩල පිටි, යෝගට්, බිත්තර මිශ්‍රණයක කළවම් කරලා පාන්කුඩුත් දවටලා බැදගත්තා. බැදපු ඉස්සෝ ළූණු කොල සලාදෙකුත් එක්ක කලින් දවසේ තෙල් දවටලා හදපු නාරං ලුණු තෙල් අච්චාරුවත්මේසෙට ගෙනිච්චා. නැන්දා බිත්තර මසාලා කරියකුයි, අල කිරි හොදියි, ගෝවා කොල මැල්ලුමකුයි හදලා තිබුණා. ඉස්සෝ වලට නාරං යුෂ මිරික ගත්තම අමුතු පැණි රසක් එක්ක ඇඹුලක් දැනෙනවා. ඉතිං ඒ සීතලේ උණු උණු බතුත් එක්ක වෙන මොනවද ඕනේ ? අපි තව දවස් දෙක තුනක් ඉන්න තීරණය කළා.

@@chandirani3293 - I am not saying that some do not choose village/farm life over city life and find that a better life for them, but living the «simple life», living off the land, is not just easy. It is not a romantic, «lazy» or «slow» life, like some of these videos may give an impression of. E.g. if you or your children get sick, it may be very challenging. Many have to work long days with hard physical work. If crops fail, it may be devastating. Etc etc, there are a lot of factors playing a role. These videos do not show any of these sides. They only show the cute sides and of course we all love watching those videos, it seems very relaxing and nice. No, I am not wrong. I am not criticizing that life, and I am not saying it is the same for everybody (notice I said «most people»). I am only saying that reality is much more complex. You don’t have to travel too much in the countryside in some countries to see that (e.g. in some African countries). I have no doubt that many people today could benefit from a more simple life though, especially getting out in the countryside and live a less stressful life, as long as they have some basic needs met.

This place looks like paradise! All the food is from their surroundings, natural and unprocessed. Yes and no plastics. This way of life wasn’t unusual as recently as 60 years ago in most of Asia and even in countrysides in western countries. I’m old enough to know this. It is surprising and refreshing to witness such a way of life still exists as in these videos from Sri Lanka.

I use to hate living here in the countryside, I felt stuck and I couldn't wait to make enough money to finally move to a 'first World country' but finding your channel and watching your videos, seeing you living the country side life in the most simple and elegant makes me appreciate my life a little bit more. I decided to start documenting my life and it's has been so freeing to just be myself and share it with the world . I owe it all to you, you have been my greatest inspiration .
