    Today we at long last take a look at my Seiko Turtle. The SRPC25J1, aka The Dark Knight Turtle. With a very unique blue to black horizontal gradient sunburst dial. At least that's the best way I can describe it. Like all Seiko Turtles it uses a 4r36 movement (NH36a ).

    My first dive watch was the Turtle predecessor, the Seiko 6309, which I passed on to one of my sons. I have greatly enjoyed the nostalgia of having a cushioned case Seiko diver again.

    I spend a lot of time outdoors - hiking, climbing, sailing, fly fishing, etc. - and the SRP777 has become one of my go to activity/adventure watches. I'm not so much into the flashier dial variants - I wanted a pure tool watch so I went with the classic black/silver colorway. I was planning to buy a Tudor Black Bay Steel for the same purpose but realized I wouldn't necessarily be comfortable bashing a $3000 watch against rocks and such. The Turtle is a watch I can wear and not worry about. It lives on an MN strap and only comes out of the box when I'm heading outdoors. It doesn't hurt that it's super comfortable and has an iconic look; arguably as iconic as the Tudor. Cheers.

    Thoroughly enjoyed the review as always. Nice tease at the end, it is an interesting discussion point for sure: Seiko vs. Microbrand. Can't wait to hear your take. I think Seiko brings a lot to the table in the Sub $400 price range from case design and construction to amazing dials. But they have the continual problems with alignment and squishy bezel action. I find many micros have unique designs, but the cases are generally less dynamic and also less refined (often with sharp edges that need a little bit of a buff to dull down). Something that doesn't get mentioned as often as it should is also that many micros use the Seiko movements, so there is some overlap, lol. It all comes down to individual tastes and specific watches. Certainly not a clear cut or decisive answer (for most of us anyhow). Cheers!

    Thanks for the great review Shane. I bought this model for May son’s 18th birthday as has first mechanical watch and one of the key reasons was the superior movement over the SKX. The other reasons included the retro design, Seiko brand, Divers 200m and the retro case design. Overall, it is a unique watch that might not be as “feature rich” as a micro-brand, but you know what you get with a Seiko and he enjoys wearing it (mostly on a black and blue matching NATO strap)

    I'm wearing an Alpina Startimer GMT in black and red with a commandeered Bulova Moon Watch leather bracelet on it on my left wrist. The GMT hand IS set to Greenwich Mean Time, since I have frequent conversations with friends throughout Europe and Western Asia, and I have a Rolex Submariner on the oyster bracelet on my right. I flashed them both with my blacklight flashlight, listened to your video, and now am headed to bed. It's 9:55 PM here, Mountain Time. GMT minus 7. Greetings from the mountains of Montana. I know a lot of reviewers take exception to the clasp on Seiko Divers watches, but take a close look at the way all the possible “sharp” edges, even on the dive extension, are turned away from your wrist. A milled clasp might look nice but if they risk cutting into your wet suit, which would be annoying, or worse yet cutting a hole in your dry suite, which could lead to a life threading problem in cold water, you begin to see that when it says “Divers” on the dial it might need to cover more than just the watch head. 😉

    Superb review, beautiful video composition and lighting, Lovely choice of watch/dial and Shane is not afraid to express his opinion on value. And several strap options are photographed. IMO, there are better value dive watches out there, eg Orient Mako/Ray/Komatsu or Zelos etc. The case shape is the Seiko advantage, and of course, the Turtle is a certified diver, which gives it a lot of cred. Always a joy to watch Shane's videos👍☘

    I just picked this up today, used for $150. Clean crystal, looks almost new. I'm not usually into blue watches. I wear a lot of camo and black, OD green, desert tan, etc. I got this with the plan to mod the dial, chapter ring and bezel insert to make a Pogue colorway. As the Pogue is something I'll probably never get, but love the yellow sunburst dial, chapter ring and pepsi bezel. Well, plans change! In person, this looks stunning, I mean stunning. I'm not going to change anything but mod the crystal to sapphire. I have a blue camo nato and the 2 were made for each other. This is really pretty. :). Photos don't do it justice.

    Looking forward the future discussion re: Seiko vs. micro brands. I'd probably fall on the opposite spectrum of determining Seiko tends to be "worth it" despite the numerous examples of where they are not ...
    As for the dial size you wondered about, they use the same diameters on 7s, 4R and 6R (and probably 6L ?) movements. Chapter rings/bezels are what make up the difference (for Seiko watches that use Seiko movements.) As an example, Random Rob calls himself a "Turtle Killer" for often using turtle dials in SKX builds over the years.

  • @0shii
    @0shii 4 роки тому +10

    I think the ISO certification is relevant when you talk about the value proposition - Most of the microbrands don't bother to make actual divers, they're "just" dive style watches with 200m water resistance. While the amount of peace of mind that might give you is certainly going to vary from person to person, it's definitely a cost that Seiko is taking on there.

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  4 роки тому +4

      Personally I wouldn't call them dive style watches. To me that's more of a dive style case without a screw down crown and 100m. Like a lot of Seiko 5s
      I don't think there is much of a difference from the design and engineering of most regular 300m watch and a 200m ISO rated diver. I think the major difference is that most other companies don't have the capability, or don't want to go through the cost of testing every single watch.
      But your very right on how much that peace of mind means to each person.

      I know people who ISO certify, it is not as big a deal as you think.

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  4 роки тому +1

      @@tombryan1 Generally I think you are correct. It's just typical watch slang to say or ask if a watch is iso certified or ISO rated. Rather than ask if it was manufactured to meet or under ISO 6425 specifications.
      To be honest I've never personally dealt with any ISO stuff myself (although I have a friend who always goes on about it). Yet I had to deal with something along similar lines called GLP (Good Laboratory Practices). It's sort of similar in the sense that it's a set of SOP and best practices that have to be met in order to maintain the consistency and integrity of analyzing samples.
      I don't necessarily think it's a big deal, generally, it's just extra steps and documentation needed to do anything. Which like anything takes more time and costs more money. Specifically when it comes to watches a company that isn't making an ISO rated watch, the testing procedures to ensure compliance are much more limited. Not to mention they only test one of out so many watches to see if it passes.
      Whereas in the production line of a divers rated watch, every single one has to be tested. Which takes time and money, and facilities to do such. Which is why a lot of smaller companies and micro brands don't do it.

    I have had a few Turtles in my watch quest and, though I sold all 3, they are my favorite Seiko case design. For a large watch, they sit low on the wrist, unlike the SKX, Marinemaster, Tuna etc.
    I did end up coming back to that basic case design when I bought an SLA033. I couln't be happier. If you, the video viewer, are on the fence as to which Seiko diver to buy, I strongly recommend the Turtle.

    Like the Seiko turtle, however, I found it too be big and clunky when I tried it on. It’s a a shame as it has a wonderful traditional Seiko diver dial and has the day/date feature which I love. They have done so many wonderful colour combinations as well. Thankfully I never bought one because Seiko came along with the mini-turtle. I picked up an SRPC39K1. It’s a much smaller size at 42.3mm and only 43mm lug to lug. This size fits my 6.5” wrist perfectly. I also got the factory Seiko bracelet for it. It wears well as it has a cushion case like it’s larger sibling. Some detractors don’t like the cyclops magnifier, tombstone dial markers or the protruding 3 O’clock crown, but none of these things really bother me if I’m honest. The blue on the SRPC39K1 is amazing. I absolutely love it.

    As a guy who has a number of Seikos (including 6309's which I think the 7040 version seems to be the predecessor of the modern turtle), and some micro brands, I agree with your assessment. But I think there is a place for both in a collection. I find the micro-brands are hit and miss when it comes to value retention. Seiko, like Rolex, will always hold a certain universal value to watch collectors, whereas a defunct micro-brand that you got a watch from may not when you go to sell it on 5 or 10 years from now. Not to say all micro-brands are created equal or will go defunct but I guarantee many will. I think 25 years from now, people will still want a vintage Turtle, Samurai and Monsters etc. Will Zelos, Phoibos, Helm, Stratton etc. etc. be around then?

    Wearing my turtle (SRPC91) as I watch this and I have similar sentiment. I actually purchased two different save the ocean models during Black Friday sales due to the great value propositions but returned one. I love the dial and the improved movement over the SKX, but I’m still not sure I like the case shape. I like the day date complication so getting the Samurai won’t really work either. Outside of modding an SKX I feel like this is the closest I can get to exactly what I want for the price I paid. It’s a great watch with my only complaint being the aesthetics of the case. It’s incredibly comfortable and wears so much better than its size

    Nice review. I have 3 Turtles. I personally really like them. I also really like this particular version.
    Is it a good value. If depends on the price. I know there are some still available for under $300, and I would say under $400 you are ok. However some are going for a lot more, at that price Definitely not worth it.
    For whatever reason, many, including me, look past many things Seiko still does that you would not tolerate on a Microbrand. The Gardlex, the stamped, clasp, and the worst, there to often QC issues.

      It's one of the newer 5KXs. When possible I try to use my own footage, rather than someone else. Since I don't have any of the SKX, the 5KX had to do. It's not the same watch, but looks almost identical. So I think the point is still valid.
