Try starting with green or olive, like the dutch masters did, for skin. It produces some great effects! Edited to add: This might be your best work yet!
You are almost at 100k you deserve 500k I tell everyone I know you taught me to paint miniatures I’ve been following you years I hope you get 100k more!
I'm very impressed how the staining technique avoided the 'purgatory' phase of painting - you know, where things look bad until they don't. I'l try using this in the future, that's for sure. And I also think this is one of your finest works. Perfect, gritty, natural looking fantasy.
I have always used this technique... Mostly cause I couldn't afford a bunch of washes or inks, so I just used a staining technique like this as a substitute.... And even til this day, this is my go to technique instead of inks, washes or any other shading ... Awesome video!
Not sure if it was the technique, finished product, ease of use, maybe all of them. Hands down best video so far for me. Thanks for sharing and please be safe.
I tend to do this with very rusty things to build up a great variety of colors in the rust. However for rust i obviously don't place highlights in normal places but do some of the "washes"/layers as stippling or spattering.
Awesome vid. This is the first time I’ve seen this technique so it’s nice to learn something new. I like how you made the point that we can use the paints we have for this instead of buying into the next paint fad. Those eyes look awesome, and definitely deserve their own technique video.
Very cool technique. Looks great. Something I think I may try. Love the fig as well. Lots of character and the way you did they eyes definitely adds to it.
To be honest, it looks more like glazing when you trying to paint purple recesses, but i guess its just a matter of how we used to call things. Thanks for a video, its sometimes great to try out new messy way to paint minis.
A very fine video! Good technique for model painting. Great for organic materials on models. Also great with paint brands that are overly thin, out of the pot/bottle. Personally I dont use water to make the paint stain: tap water is too harsh, and jugs of distilled water costs $$. But alittle distilled water, some medium, and touch of flowaid or dishsoap, and can make a thinner for same effects!
Ok... I loved the technique as soon as you showed it, but now that I've tried it... how do you avoid pools? How do you get such perfect coverage of the stain layer over the canvas layer?
I did the same technique to the same mini and found that it helped to have another wet brush on hand (just water) to feather out some of the darker spots continually while its drying. Basically to blend it out until it looks smooth. It worked well. Also make sure to soak up any excessive pooling in the recesses with a dry brush.
Hey Doc, You use heavy skin tone a lot by Vallejo, Have you happen to have noticed a change in the color of it recently? I have one bottle, that’s my oldest and it’s like the one you have in your video, But I just got two new bottles from The shop and they are much more Rudy in color also when they separate instead of getting a green separation like my old ones it has a more peachy color when separated. Just curious if you have also notice this. If I could post a picture I could. Also got them from 2 different shops cause first I thought it was a bad batch. *Update!!!! On 3/20/22 my heavy skin tone looks like 2 different colors however on the pallet I can’t tell, be this a lesson, Never compare colors from in the pot put it down on your pallet, still it’s 98% similar Must’ve been that my old pot just separated differently and therefore look differently inside the dropper
well, now i have a name for a thing that i have been doing for a while now, "heavy paint washing", fine enough and works a miracle when applied with care. :)
Hola amigo,me gusta mucho tus videos y aprendo mucho de ellos,el problema es que no entiendo poco inglés ¿sabes si existe alguna posibilidad de poner los su títulos en español? Saludos desde España

Your use of color and technique here is really excellent. I hope that some day I will have the knowledge and understanding that you do.

Great video I’ve been doing this for a while without giving it a name! Great name it is a paint stain in theory. I was calling it wash glazing.
Nice! And those eyes.. Amazing.

That's absolutely bloody marvellous

Wow, very nice.
Beautiful job
Excellent as always. I'll have to try this technique.
This reminds me of how I use oil washes for the majority.
you Sir are the Frazetta of figures..
I accidentally used a similar method on my T Rex that turned out great. Just a heads up. Great paint

What are you thinning the paints with? Did say. Is it just water or a flow improver?
