One thing I did not know initially but is very helpful to Veterans relocating here is Veterans who are Florida residents and were honorably discharged with a 100% service-related Total and Permanent disability are eligible for a total exemption from ad valorem taxes on the property they own and use as their homesteads. You still must pay non-ad valorem such as some services such as trash pickup and CDD fees which are rolled up into non-ad valorem taxes. Other benefits include veteran property tax exemptions, state employment preferences, education and tuition assistance, vehicle tags, as well as hunting and fishing license privileges.
The area around MacDill is very expensive and the commute to someplace more reasonable is further than I care to drive with traffic and such.
