I cannot bring myself to hate this game.
I grew up poor, and this was one of the few games I had.
And when you don't have many games, you love the ones you have.
😄
Amen! It's a fine game. There were definitely worse games to grow up with.
Too true, that's how I became a master of games like Xexyz back in the day - I had no other choice
Never realized that "Muggys Bogues off a trampoline" was a scientific measurement of launch angles. Lol
I'm all about the science!
As expected, 'Sunman' had a killer soundtrack.
The 80s were the era of weird, confusing but oddly charming Superman games with this and the Atari game.
Good to see this one get an overview from you. As a kid I was really into open-world NES games, and this one was no exception. It's a bit on the janky side in my opinion, but like you mentioned, it was nice to see something attempt this level of ambition on the NES/Famicom.
That Sunsoft game looks super fun.
I mean, that Sunman game looks pretty SUPER to me!
The scary part is this game is SUPERIOR to 64 in every single way!
Just played through this again recently. I believe the flying power works in terms of distance. You can fly to wherever you have enough flight power to fly to. Extend the meter to fly farther.
Makes sense. I should go back to it, I remember it being better than I expected
@NES Friend same. I had fun with it. 2 bad kryptonites and 1 good kryptonite was silly. And there were a few spots where I wasn't sure where to go or something didn't trigger the next cut scene. But I liked it.
Awesome videos. Been binging. Keep it up. 👍
This is one of those NES games that are too ambitious for its own good. It has some good ideas but man...that execution is rough
This is the nicest review of that Superman game I've ever seen so I must commend you on it. Personally, I've never had a good experience with it. It feels more like it started with the gameplay concept and had Superman shoehorned into it rather than starting with the basis of Superman and trying to translate his world into a game that makes sense to him. If it had been an original IP on it's own, I wouldn't judge it so harshly but passing it off as Superman does both the core game itself and him a bit of a disservice.
I respect you for playing this game enough to work out all the well-thought out details of the review. It's certainly not the worst game, and I did like the tunes and it's cute, but overstayed its welcome, I felt.
Interesting to see a mostly positive review of this one as I usually see it pilloried online.
Video games are fun man. I like most of'em!
Apperently, the Superman theme is in the Japanese version but due to copyright issues, the field theme from Indora no Hikari was used instead as the title screen theme in the Western releases.
That second one you showed off looks suspiciously like the Superman arcade game. I wonder what the connection is, given that it was made by Taito, and not Sunsoft.
I rented it as a kid with my cousin from starlight vide in Lisbon Ohio as a kid in the 80's I was just playing my columnist a month ago. I got beat up pretty bad I'll have to try again.
Soundtrack reminds me of other games in the use of the instrumentals but can't put my finger on it. Blaster Master maybe? Or Kid Icarus?
This game was the bane of my existence as a kid. Couldn’t make heads or tails of it.
Woah fast travel
Another game were I give "A" for effort but it seems like the devs were limited by the hardware/lack of programming. Sunman would have been a waaay better Superman game.
Is there a reason out there that Sunsoft didn’t just port it to the SNES?
Ok, so let's check the facts
- you get the chance to play as Clark Kent, in a proto open world style
- a game in which Superman prefers to walk than fly around, and even take the subway!
And still is a better game than the Mega Drive one or the rather infamous Superman 64. What a gem!
The prototype looks way better! I would have played that. Still, both seem to be better games than Superman 64 (yeah, someone needs to mention that game and I'm willing to be that guy).
