Thanks for the long clip showing each coin in very good focus. You have good videos because you know how to use a camera. Many coin guys don't showcase as well as you do. Well done.
Good question and the answer is that IF the new coin is 90% silver AND 10% copper as those Morgans were it won't be able to tell the difference at all. But if its 90% silver and some other stuff like zinc etc it WILL be able to tell. The very best fakes of very valuable coins will indeed be correct silver composition. Some of the better ping apps MIGHT be able to tell the difference if there is a slight composition anomaly but its not easy. For those super valuable coins only knowledge and experience will properly tell you if its real as it will be indeed made of silver and will indeed be clearly minted - hence the only way to be sure of those is to buy authenticated ones by the top 4 guys (and CAC if in the US). PCGS and NGC especially will NOT slab something if there is any doubt at all - I have given them a couple of coins that I am 99% confident are genuine that have come back authenticity unverified - that means they think its probably real but they will not guarantee it, as opposed to questionable authenticity (they think its fake but they cannot be sure) or counterfeit (they are sure its fake).
I always do three tests. Weight, ping and magnet. You can’t always rely on the ping test. I had a silver eagle that sounded like a dud. Weight was good and it passed the magnet test. But as per your video the magnet test can be iffy as well. Took it to a coin shop and they tested it on the same machine you have and it tested out good :) So if anyone has any doubts when testing take it to a local LCS and have it tested if you don’t have a metal verifier machine.
I'm a magician, and I do all my coin work with Morgans. I used to get them off Ebay, but about a quarter of the ones I purchased there were fakes. I only buy from solid sources now.
I have a pretty good ear for these things but having a check is always better. Also, I still don't have a sigma, but it's on my list of things to buy. Anyway, I installed the app and it seems to work great. Thanks, man! 😃 👍
I am curious about what the weight difference was between those two coins, I’m sure that would have shown a significant change there as well! Great app and machine! You can now purchase a pocket pinger sold to ping those coins with the app! 👍
One thing I have noticed about fake Morgans is the press grease they used almost never comes out of the indentations of the coin. It seems in China they use old recycled oils in the press .
Good video i bought like 20 off ebay in past month ...pretty much same seller with amazing record very good feedback but i still weigh all that i get and i ping balancing on finger i leave space with my thumb just to grab if it off balaces then all is use my trusty pencil works beautiful i pretty much thought of it so go ahead spread the word just ping with a wooden pencil and eventually you'll train your ears 👍😎
besides that obvious sound fail (no app needed for a fake that obvious) there is so much visually wrong with that fake I can't imagine you honestly couldn't tell the difference and just said that as an example use case for the app. first the painted on patina, the hair being further from the L in pluribus, the nose is shaped wrong, as is the chin. Ironic the Chinese got the chin wrong... sorry bad joke. and the overall worn down look doesn't line up with the lack of damage. There is an overall lack of details yet almost no damage to the features and fields.
I have seen this mentioned in the past. What kind of info does the app capture on you from your phone? That is my concern and who has access to the data.
Yes you would, if your coin is worn I would use exact weight, you can change it, manually. In the worst case you will get one star, so there will be a specific tolerance within the app itself. 🤙
I'm not sure I mentioned this in one of our earlier video's... but here goes again. Can you figure out how to use the machine to identify 1967 Canadian Dimes and Quarters... some are 50% silver, some are 80% silver ?
@@tonytiger7777 The official weight (in the Kraus World Coin Book) is the same for both the 50% and 80% silver varieties... which doesn't quite make sense to me either !
I have a dollar same as your coins. But the weight is 24 dot 50. Does it mean this is fake? 24.49 This is the weight on the scale doesn't mean the dollar is fake. My friend, can you please advise me?
I was worried since I couldn't hear the ping you made on either coin, but I pulled out a 1-ozt Aztec Calendar .999 silver round and pinged it with first a metal envelope opener and then a small screwdriver (also metal). I heard the ping. So I'll blame UA-cam for not passing along the pings you made, but also suggest you not use a fake coin to ping a real coin. To test both, use something neutral and nonjudgmental (a knitting needle, an exacto knife, etc.).
I just bought five 1878 Morgan Silver Dollar's that came in a slab pack. Right off the bat, I could see that they were likely dipped in something to try to make them look older---this stuff rubbed off easily with finger nail. Next, I weighed them----25.3 grams----26.7 grams are the true weight of a legit Morgan. I had bid on these coins, and lost, however Ebay sent me a "Second Chance," saying the original winner didn't pay???? Well, I smelled a fishy fish and still got stink all over me. Like our host says here: If it seems to good to be true, look elsewhere.
I can tell just by looking at it. Because the fake one has the face of the woman too smooth and clean as if it was new... No scratches or wear... But the real coin shows some wear and scratches.
Note that the app doesn't work well with rounds, because rounds are not standardized in terms of diameter and thickness, which affects the sound. But for government issued coins, it works very well. Also note that 2/3 is passing.
I bought a slabbed pcgs Palestine 50 mils coin that was shipped from China. Maybe revise your statement to “Don’t buy coins from China if you don’t know what you’re doing…”
What’s with all the Morgans on UA-cam with the black patina around the lettering? They just look super fake, and I have little doubt they are. I have many Morgans, and none of the look like they were coated in black ink and then buffed. That’s not what silver coins look like, IMHO. Both of those coins look totally sus to me. 0:31
Pulled my 1882 Morgan to measure. Everything was intolerance until the ping test. It did not have the sustain Sustain refers to the steady state of a sound at its maximum intensity, and decay is the rate at which it fades to silence. So I took it to my LCS to apply the XRF precious meal varifier to confirm my suspension. And YES, my 1882 Morgan Silver dollar is FAKE.
Morgan’s are a pretty easy coin for me if they pass they ping and sound test the possibility of them being a 90% silver fake (those exist) is still there but I can make sure it isn’t by checking it against a real one whcih if then it checks out it’s real

Thanks for the long clip showing each coin in very good focus. You have good videos because you know how to use a camera. Many coin guys don't showcase as well as you do. Well done.
How does the machine know if a coins is actually silver pre 1900s and not 90% silver but new?
Good question and the answer is that IF the new coin is 90% silver AND 10% copper as those Morgans were it won't be able to tell the difference at all. But if its 90% silver and some other stuff like zinc etc it WILL be able to tell.

Thanks for the tip on the app. Never heard of it. I like testing all my coins with every option available. Thanks for the video.
you are welcome and yes it’s good to have more options for sure! 🔥🐉

that’s cool that they tested it for you 💪🏽 most of mine will do the same as well 🔥🐉
Add a Magnet slide test instead of just checking it with a single magnet & your gold.
How much do they charge?
I'm a magician, and I do all my coin work with Morgans. I used to get them off Ebay, but about a quarter of the ones I purchased there were fakes. I only buy from solid sources now.
why would you even use real morgans for magic tricks?
I have a pretty good ear for these things but having a check is always better. Also, I still don't have a sigma, but it's on my list of things to buy. Anyway, I installed the app and it seems to work great. Thanks, man! 😃 👍
nice my friend it is a good tool to have for sure 💪🏽🔥🐉

Not necessarily. There are metals that are close to 90% silver.
Very awesome and informative video. Well done
you are welcome and thanks for watching! 🔥🐉
I am always so scared I will get a fake Morgan! It is good that these videos come out regularly from many channels to remind me to test them!
yeah always trust but verify 💪🏽🔥🐉
One thing I have noticed about fake Morgans is the press grease they used almost never comes out of the indentations of the coin. It seems in China they use old recycled oils in the press .
Thanks so much. I've been looking at the Sigma, but retired now, so the app will be my go-to for testing.
best of luck my friend 👍🏽🔥🐉
Sweet tip Dragons, I plan to buy a sigma at some point but for now I'll spend that money growing the stack!

Does the app give off any false negatives?
besides that obvious sound fail (no app needed for a fake that obvious) there is so much visually wrong with that fake I can't imagine you honestly couldn't tell the difference and just said that as an example use case for the app. first the painted on patina, the hair being further from the L in pluribus, the nose is shaped wrong, as is the chin. you are very welcome my friend 🔥🐉

just delete the app after you use it 🔥🐉
Great video. Excellent delivery 🤩🤩👃🏻
thanks so much! 🔥🐉
Interesting app.
Wouldn't checking the exact weight and diameter against the Morgan specifications determine if it's fake?
Yes you would, if your coin is worn I would use exact weight, you can change it, manually. In the worst case you will get one star, so there will be a specific tolerance within the app itself. 🤙
yeah the weight is usually an effective test although “slick” coins will be off obviously 🔥🐉
can you flip the coin in the air and catch it oppose to hitting metal on metal.
If a silver dollar is super worn, would it be a safe buy, or are those being counterfeited as well?
I'm not sure I mentioned this in one of our earlier video's... but here goes again. Can you figure out how to use the machine to identify 1967 Canadian Dimes and Quarters... some are 50% silver, some are 80% silver ?
I have wondered that also. Don't they weigh pretty much the same?
@@tonytiger7777 The official weight (in the Kraus World Coin Book) is the same for both the 50% and 80% silver varieties... which doesn't quite make sense to me either !
@@joeknipp6698 Thank you. I have looked at NGC world silver weights and they say the same thing. Baffling!!
I don’t think the sigma can do that... I have not seen any setting for it 🔥🐉
Great info. Thanks for sharing⚒⚒👍👍
thanks for watching my friend! 🔥🐉
Great video, lots of fantastic info. Thanks.
you are welcome and thanks for watching my friend! 🔥🐉
@SilverDragons what does the fake Morgan weigh?
i’ll have to double check but it was lighter for sure 🔥🐉
I have ping coin app it test the ping sound on coins but still needs an update doesn't have all good and silver on there yet
yeah it did recently have an update though 🔥🐉
Great video. I will have to grab this app and give it a try. Better safe than sorry.
thank you my friend and it is a great option for testing coins for sure! 🔥🐉
But all the silver I could buy for the cost of that tool....
My exact thoughts
woulda been nice if u tested the mm and weight
What was the scar on the cheek all about?
just tying to throw you off lol. who knows how it got there... it’s a cull or damaged coin 🔥🐉

Just received 2 Morgans. One was real and one was fake so was a good way to test the app! Lol, sent it right back to the seller.
What do you do if the coins are graded? You need to trust your seller.
I was worried since I couldn't hear the ping you made on either coin, but I pulled out a 1-ozt Aztec Calendar .999 silver round and pinged it with first a metal envelope opener and then a small screwdriver (also metal). yeah I see what you are saying but the ping is not affected by what type of metal hits the coin 🔥🐉
@@SilverDragons47 -- that's good to know. Still, I'll be using a striker/tester that will not lead to any confusion 😊

I know this is an old video, however, the fake ones will clean up and be brass looking ( gold). I used a buffer as I obtained some "culls"
I had to save a while for that sigma, but It was totally worth it to ensure my stack was legit and to protect me in the future
yeah I am very happy that I got one as well 💪🏽🔥🐉
@SilverDragons47 how about if the coin is gold plated???
