The answer to this question is simple: Mutt Lange. Listen to everything he writes and you'll recognize his sound. And i'm certainly not complaining. The same can be said of all songwriters who work with different artists (Desmond Child, Diane Warren, Jim Steinman, Holly Knight, etc...). Listen to ''Heaven's On Fire'' (Kiss), ''Poison'' (Alice Cooper), ''You Gove Love a Bad Name'' (Bon Jovi) and ''I Hate Myself For Loving You'' (Joan Jett) and tell me you don't recognize Desmond Child. Or the themes for ''Superman'', ''Star Wars'', ''Indiana Jones'' and ''E.T.'' and the usual John Williams musical motifs.

Glad I’m not the only one to pick that up, and yes, the key to the entire recipe there is Mutt. When you look back at Adrenalize (and this is even crazier), half of that CD could have easily been covered or recorded outright by Shania Twain. If you put a country twang or shuffle to Stand Up (Kick Love into Motion), Personal Property, Heaven Is, or Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad, those songs could easily been off of Shania’s second album, which is the one Mutt produced.
The first time I heard Def Leppard on the radio, I thought it was a Bryan Adams track I hadn't heard yet because it was SO MUCH like Wakin' Up the Neighbours, which I adored. Both great acts.

Joe is such an amazing singer. You really have to hand it to him when he goes on stage and goes all out. Though Mutt Lange is the guy who really pushed Joe to find his best qualities. I remember hearing Joe say how on "High and Dry," Lange kept yelling at him to push himself and then do take after take until Lange was satisfied. I didn't think about the similarities between the stuff on "Waking Up the Neighbours" and a lot of Def Leppard's work in the '80s and '90s until I listened to Adams' hit "Thought I'd Died and Gone to Heaven" a few months ago and discovering that Mutt Lange produced that song. That's when I thought, "That's why this sounds a lot like a Def Leppard joint!"
I remember watching Def Leppard during their co-headlining tour with Bryan Adams sometime in the early 00's. Since it was co-headling, they would alternate closing shows between the two. As much as I appreciate Adams, he happened to be closing the night I went to watch them. I swear I hear def Leppard back ground vocals on one song of hers. "I can't remember which song now." But one of her popular ones. Their is a chorus backing in there that is def Leppard. I say this with 100% confidence.
You know, I ALWAYS thought that about *Waking Up The Neighbours* that it sounded like Def Leppard (And yes, I had the album on CD and knew it was produced by Mutt Lange.) Bryan Adams was technically just Rock, but he was frequently Hard Rock, but on this album he was even Metal at times, especially with "Don't Drop That Bomb On Me" which is straight-up Heavy Metal and very much in the style of Def Leppard. I even heard a rumor at that time that Def Leppard was considering possibly getting Bryan Adams to join as rhythm guitarist and co-lead vocalist after Steve Clark died. I'm sure that was just a rumor but how incredibly cool in that context it was for Joe Elliott to say that Bryan Adams could have fronted Def Leppard?? That's high praise right there. ❤
Vocally I hear a lot of influence in the raspy tenor voices of rock and three specifically who I think could easily sing each others catalog... Don Henley, Bryan Adams and Joe Elliot. Bryan and Joe both really came into the spotlight around 1980-81, so I would Henley's influence heavy on both of them... Listen to Desperado or Boys of Summer and imagine Bryan or Joe singing these tunes, I'm sure they probably both have at some point in their vocal journey.
Starship - love among cannibals was out at the same time and it sounds like def leppard and Bryan Adam’s and was also produced by mutt well some of the album was check it our Micky Thomas is a great chanter too
Just listened to 'all I want is you', and googled to see if Def Leppard had done the backing vocals. Never realised how similar some of their sounds are to each other until now!
Neighbors sounds like it very well could have been a Lep album. Even the vocals on Thought I'd Died and Gone To Heaven is a perfect example of the Mutt factor.
As a 12 yer old kid, the song ‘Thought I died and gone to Heaven’ made me think Joe was singing. But to be honest, Mutt had a way of doing that. He married Shania, made her famous, and was singlehandedly responsible for making country sound like it does nowadays. Seriously, mutt tarnished country so much that i dont bother listening to it anymore. Ive always maintained that country copied Bryan and Shania
Everything Mutt Lange touched was gold and sounded similar. DL sounded like BA and vice versa. I don’t think either of them minded. Both albums sounded phenomenal!
Joe I just listen to it and I couldn’t believe how much Bryan Adams sounds like you and you sound like him in the instrument sound the same and here we are what 20 years 30 years later I just noticed it
There's a Starship song called I Didn't Mean to Stay All Night, written by Lange, and with his backing vocals, that sounds just like a Def Leppard or Bryan Adams ballad.
"Thought I Died and Gone to Heaven" was quite "Def Leppardish!" I thought so the first time I heard it. Cross-pollination was an excellent analogy. Many of the songs by one would be very nicely replicated by the other especially during and after HYSTERIA.
Its good to live long enough to hear Joe Elliot say what I said back at the time... Mutt Lange puts his stamp on a band and especially in the 80s there was a definite sound and style that was similar no matter who the artist was.
He did the same with Shania Twain's after they were married, some of her stuff definitely sounded more Def Leppard-ish, and I remember thinking that at the time (early 2000s)
Mutt Lange is a musical and production genius. While some of the songs from Shania, Bryan, AC/DC and Def Leppard do sound familiar because of his influence… they’re all timeless classics that we all remember and love. And none of the bands are egotistical enough to mind
Mutt worked on a Starship song called "Didn't mean to Stay All Night" which has a Def Leppard sound to it. and he produced Nickelback's Dark House album which has a few Def Leppard sounding songs 🤣
My obsession with Def Leppard actually began when I heard Let's Get Rocked playing in a music shop. I stopped in my tracks when I heard the vocals cos I was convinced it must be a new album from Bryan Adams, with whom I was already obsessed. So in my mind I always thought Joe sounded like Bryan, not the other way round. Hehe.
It's the Mutt Lange drums, aka triggers, from that Era. Listen to Leppards Hysteria album then listen to a song like Thought I died and Gone to Heaven by Bryan Adams. The bIG production and drums are identical. Massive production.
Joe Elliott just said something that I was thinking of years ago. One day I was thinking who could replace Joe Elliott in Def Leppard that sounds similar to him. I came up with Bryan Adams. I thought his scratchy voice is pretty close to Joe Elliott’s, but I didn’t know Mutt Lange produced Bryan’s album until a couple of years ago.
Both DL and Bryan Adams write great songs. Bryan could fill in for Joe and make the crowd happy. But sooner or later they'd want Joe back. Same with a visa versa situation.
Whoa ...its a whole are of musical study , mutts influence on The lepps , Bryan, and the criminally underated love among the Canibals by the excellent Starship
Check ✔ the bridge of Everything I Do I Do It for You. It sounds like the chorus of Pour Some Sugar on Me. Mutt Lange is the producer and cowriter of both songs! 🤯🤯
Another reason why to love Def Leppard...Speaking the truth. Joe Elliot is awesome!! I'm a Van Halen fan and a Def Leppard fan. I wish the Van Halen album's were produced by Mutt. Seems like he figured out how to distinguish the drums, vocals, and guitars (especially the guitars) on the mix to make everything crystal clear. For future concerts, Def Leppard needs to use one of their most talented members and showcase their contributions to rock history in their shows....all the cool Dio suff. Seems like they're not capitalizing on Viv's accomplishments...which they have every right to do. Not to mention, Viv kicks ass and should be able to show the crowd his history.
Joe is extremely intelligent, very well put threwout this interview. Amazing.
Starship - love among cannibals was out at the same time and it sounds like def leppard and Bryan Adam’s and was also produced by mutt well some of the album was check it our Micky Thomas is a great chanter too
In my opinion, I always thought all I want is you sounded just like Def Leppard and that’s what I love about it
Def Leppard isn't my thing but they are down to earth!
Joe is class all the way….grew up with these lads
They always came across as good lads. I was punk rather than metal, but I always rated them.
Bryan has been around as long or even before they came out. Some artists just sound like each other.
I love Def and Bryan.
Yeah huge star
Thought I'd Died And Gone To Heaven always sounded like Def Leppard singing backup vocals to me, now it all makes sense - Mutt Lange.
Half of the BV tracks are very probably actually Mutt himself singing in both cases.
Just listened to 'all I want is you', and googled to see if Def Leppard had done the backing vocals. Never realised how similar some of their sounds are to each other until now!
Mutt Lange has a signature sound, there is no mistaking his work when you listen to certain artists, and no surprise when there are similarities.
Next time you talk to Joe, ask him if he can still sing Comin Under Fire. I’d bet it would be quite a challenge today 😂. Still… a damn good singer!
I like Joe Elliott as he's as straight as straight can be 👍
Neighbors sounds like it very well could have been a Lep album. Even the vocals on Thought I'd Died and Gone To Heaven is a perfect example of the Mutt factor.
My neoghbors and I listening to "High & Dry" now !!🎵🎵!!.🤘🤪🤘!!🎵🎵!!
I love Joe ❤
I preferred Tom Allom and Eddie Kramer and Max Norman made much better albums!
It's why I love "Waking Up the Neighbours" -- because it sounded like a Def Leppard album! 😄
Waking up the neighbours & hysteria are 2 of the best!
it's one of those bands that sound even better when playing live.
The chorus of Stand up (kick love into motion) always send it to me like a Bryan Adams chorus
Joe I just listen to it and I couldn’t believe how much Bryan Adams sounds like you and you sound like him in the instrument sound the same and here we are what 20 years 30 years later I just noticed it
Love you ❤ love you so much ❤ beautiful voice.❤❤
There's a Starship song called I Didn't Mean to Stay All Night, written by Lange, and with his backing vocals, that sounds just like a Def Leppard or Bryan Adams ballad.
Glad you guys brought this up because I always thought that Bryan Adams sounded like Def Leppard. Not all of it, of course, but you get my drift.
The dude has literally no ego but in reality he’s a global super star. Pour some sugar on him.
@@lizbuckland4163 yes indeed. Especially the album "UP" but also hits like "Man, I feel like a woman".
Mutt Lange is a musical and production genius. While some of the songs from Shania, Bryan, AC/DC and Def Leppard do sound familiar because of his influence… they’re all timeless classics that we all remember and love. And none of the bands are egotistical enough to mind
Gotta love the ultimate Tom Sholz Rockman tone, eh!
Yep exactly
Joe Elliott just said something that I was thinking of years ago. One day I was thinking who could replace Joe Elliott in Def Leppard that sounds similar to him. I came up with Bryan Adams. I thought his scratchy voice is pretty close to Joe Elliott’s, but I didn’t know Mutt Lange produced Bryan’s album until a couple of years ago.
Both DL and Bryan Adams write great songs. Bryan could fill in for Joe and make the crowd happy. But sooner or later they'd want Joe back.
Same with a visa versa situation.
Did the boys of Def Leppard moonlight as background vocalists on “The Cars” “Heartbeat City” album?
I never heard Adams's song on the radio.
This is a first!
Some of Shania Twain's songs sound like Def Leppard songs too.
I’m a huge shania fan!
PLEASE JOE ELLIOTT SEE THIS!!!
Where can we get the full interview?
Bryan Adams sounds like Def Leopard on "Everything I Do".
Favourite Def Leppard track:'Too Late'.
Also Mutt Lange’s voice in the backing Vox is another big reason his production sounds like that.
My Tom Shulz Rockman!!!! The damn power adapter wire was shot after 6 months use!!!!
